第三部分阅读理解(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳答案。

In Tibetan areas we often see wind-horse flags. They are long
cloths on which pictures of horses and scriptures(经文) are printed.
People often put these flags on top of houses, or leave them where a
vehicle accident happened. They prevent evil spirits from injuring
people again.
A wind-horse flag can be white, yellow, red, green or blue.
These five colors symbolize the five elements that form the world:
earth, water, fire, wind and sky. Another explanation is that red is
the sun, green is the grassland, yellow is the earth, blue is the sky,
and white is the cloud.
The wind-horse flag originated with a monk who obtained a scripture from India. When he crossed a river, he carelessly dropped the scripture into the water. He quickly saved the scripture and spread it out on a big rock to dry as he sat in meditation(默想). Suddenly violent thunder sounded like drums. The monk felt liberated(解放的) from all of his sadness, and when he opened his eyes he saw that the scripture had been blown into the sky by a strong wind. Finally, he went straight to heaven.
In order to honor the spirit of the monk and the Buddhist scripture, people printed the scripture on a piece of cloth and hung it up between the sky and the earth as though the scripture was flying in the sky.
We also know why people put the wind-horse flag on the top of mountains and houses. The Tibetan ancestors had a very great idea about changing scripture. They thought not only could people chant scripture, but so could the five elements. The wind- horse flag is a good example of how they use the wind to blow the flag, which means that the wind also chants scripture.
56. The second paragraph is mainly about the wind-horse flag’s ______.
A. styles
B. colors
C. materials
D. functions
57. What happened when the monk meditated?
A. He felt very sad about his mistake.
B. The scripture was blown into the sky.
C. He was punished by the gods.
D. Many wind-horse flags were flying.
58. According to the passage, the origin of the wind-horse flag is based on ______.
A. a historical event
B. an ancient custom
C. a vehicle accident
D. a religious tale
59. Why do people put wind-horse flags on the top of mountains and houses?
A. The wind-horse flags are safer there.
B. The wind-horse flags can be nearer to the sky
C. People believe the wind can also chant scripture.
D. People can see the wind-horse flags more clearly.

Each time I see a balloon, my mind flies back to a memory of when I was a six-year-old girl. It was a rainy Sunday and my father had recently died. I asked my mom if Dad had gone to heaven. “Yes, honey. Of course,” she said.
“Can we write him a letter?”
She paused, the longest pause of my short life, and answered, “Yes.”
My heart jumped. “How? Does the mailman go there?” I asked.
“No, but I have an idea.” Mom drove to a party store and returned with a red balloon. I asked her what it was for.
“Just wait, honey. You’ll see.” Mom told me to write my letter. Eagerly, I got my favorite pen, and poured out my six-year-old heart in the form of blue ink. I wrote about my day, what I learned at school, how Mom was doing, and even about what happened in a story I had read. For a few minutes it was as if Dad were still alive. I gave the letter to Mom. She read it over, and a smile crossed her face.
She made a hole in the corner of the letter where she looped(缠绕) the balloon string. We went outside and she gave me the balloon. It was still raining.
“Okay, on the count of three, let go. One, two, three.”
The balloon, carrying my letter, darted(猛冲) upward against the rain. We watched until it was swallowed by the mass of clouds.
Later I realized, like the balloon, that Dad had never let his sickness get him down. He was strong. No matter what he suffered, he’d persevere, dart up, and finally transcend(超越) this cold world and his sick body. He rose into sky and became something beautiful. I watched until the balloon disappeared into the gray and white and I prayed that his strength was hereditary(遗传的). I prayed to be a balloon.

When a spider wants to travel long distances, it simply casts out a strand of silk, captures the breeze and “flies” away. They are known to travel hundreds of miles, even ending up on islands in the middle of the ocean.
Now scientist have figured out how this mode of transportation works. They also discovered that spiders have very little idea of where they will be flown when caught in a heavy wind.
The new study points out that the 20-year-old model for spider “ballooning”--- which assumed that spider silk is stiff and straight and spiders just hang at the bottom --- was not perfect especially when applied in moving, violent air.
Researchers at Rothamsted Research redesigned the model to allow for flexibility(弹性) in
the spider’s dragline, its most sturdy(强韧的) line of silk used for moving about and catching prey. When the dragline is caught in a turbulent breeze, it becomes highly twisted catching air like an open parachute and sending the spider on an unknown journey.
The spider has completely no control of where or how far it travels by this means, said Andy Reynolds, a Rothamsted Research scientist. This is how a “ballooning” spider can end up in the ocean hundreds of miles from shore.
In more calm breezes, though, spiders can drift just a few yards to invade new territory or surprise prey.
Although the new model better explains how spiders “fly”, the team plans to observe spiders in violent airflow inside wind tunnels to improve the model. Better understanding how spiders travel long distances could help scientists control farmland pests.
“Spiders are key enemies of insects and can alleviate(减缓) the need for farmers to spray large quantities of pesticide(农药).” Reynolds said. “But they can only perform this function in the mathematical model we can start to examine how human activity, such as farming, affects the dispersal(散布) of spider populations.”
64. The study of spiders’“flying” is intended to ______.
A. increase the spider population
B. figure out how far spiders can “fly”
C. help control farmland pests
D. examine how human activities affect spiders’ birth
65. The passage implies that ______.
A. more about how spiders “fly” remains to be studied
B. the old model for spiders’“flying” can explain very well
C. the new model can make a better explanation than the old one
D. spiders can “fly” just a few yards in calm breezes
66. According to the new study, spiders “fly” depending on ______.
A. airflow and stiff silk
B. heavy wind and flexible silk
C. stiff and straight silk
D. flexible silk and airflow
67. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Further Research of Transportation
B. Ballooning Far
C. New Discovery of Spiders
D. How Spiders “Fly” Hundreds of Miles
D
It was when I was attending high school that I first read Asimov’s stories. At the time, a few SF magazines began to introduce this author and translate a few pieces from his “Robot Series”. Of Asimov’s works, the one that left the deepest impression on me was Pebble in the Sky. This novel directly influenced my early SF writing.
Asimov was one of the leading writers of Western science fiction’s Golden Age, so although his writing may not have a direct influence on writers of today, his underlying(潜在的) influence on many levels is undeniable --- the famous Three Laws of Robotics, and many classic writing techniques, for example. Of course, his influence is related to the atmosphere that existed in the Golden Age; a science fiction writer today has a hard time reaching that level no matter how outstanding he or she is. Asimov’s novels are marked by a fully integrated logical system, and
his stories are a pleasure to read --- this is the reason his novels still attract readers today. Naturally, Western science fiction has few people these days who follow Asimov’s creative methods; instead they are closely connected to mainstream artistic trends, employing large amounts of postmodern techniques. This type of science fiction has a hard time blossoming on Chinese soil. The majority of Chinese SF readers would rather read the classic works of Asimov. This is an important question that faces today’s Chinese science fiction writers.
Compared with the “Robot Series”, Asimov’s “Foundation Series” is a little less well-known in China. This is mostly due to the large influence of the Three Laws, and moreover, the Foundation novels have never been completely introduced here. In fact, the “Foundation Series”creates an entire world, even grander than that of the “Robot Series”; this science fiction epic(史诗) had a direct influence on later Western science fiction, the most famous example being Star Wars.
68. The Three Laws of Robotics are most probably ______.
A. stories written by Asimov
B. writing techniques employed by Asimov
C. techniques to build robots
D. characters in Asimov’s science fiction
69. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. “Foundation Series” were translated into Chinese earlier than “Robot Series”.
B. Science Fiction of postmodern style is not popular with Chinese readers.
C. Asimov is the greatest science fiction writer in Western countries.
D. The writing techniques by Asimov are better than the postmodern ones.
70. In the author’s opinion, Asimov’s “Foundation Series” ______.
A. were not as successful as his “Robot Series”
B. are better known to Chinese readers than his “Robot Series”
C. were more logically organized than his “Robot Series”
D. were written better than his “Robot Series” in some ways

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入适当的单词。
每空一词。
One of the advantages of being self-employed is that the profit the business makes belongs to the owner. If the self-employed person is successful in business, he or she has the chance to earn plenty of money and even become wealthy. The profit earned by a self-employed person is the reward for his or her effort, ability, and creativity. Thus, a second advantage of being self-employed is that a person’s intelligence and abilities have a direct effect on his or her earnings. People who have outstanding abilities or intelligence often find they can earn far more
through self-employment than they can through working as an employee. A third advantage of being self-employed is that a person can control their working hours. While not all self-employed people are completely free to choose whatever hours they want to work, most of them have more control over this area than the people who work for salaries or wages.
As with most things in life, being self-employed is not without problems first, being one’s own boss places the responsibility for success directly on that individual’s shoulders. Abilities and intelligence will be put to the test. Everyone has some weaknesses and is less capable in some things than in others. These weaknesses will affect how successful a self-employed person is. second, though the self-employed can earn considerable profits with a successful business, losses can force them out of business and, in some instances, place them in debt. A third disadvantage concerns income security. Self-employed people have no guaranteed income. Their earnings can vary greatly from year to year, depending on business conditions. Salaried people, on the other hand, can generally count on continued earnings from year to year. In addition, salaried people often enjoy fringe benefits(额外补贴), which are all of the benefits provided for employees in addition to wages and salaries. One of these benefits may be insurance paid for by the employer that continues the employee’s salary in the event of sickness or accident. Many

W: Of course. Look at me. You’re not the only one.
In high school I had a lot more time to do sports activities. I was never a great athlete, but I had enough time to play tennis with my friends regularly, and during the winter I’d go skating almost once a week at a place near my home. But after starting college all that extra time disappeared, because I was always hitting the books. Now what little spare time you have must be used in doing exercises. At least the club is open until 12 am.
M: I guess it’s worth a visit. Did you say you’re going tomorrow night?
W: Yeah.
M: OK. I’ll come too. How about meeting me in front of the cinema at eight? And we’ll catch the bus there.
W: Sure, see you there.

Well, a mixed picture over the next few days. Today in Britain, it’ll be very wet and windy. You can see from the satellite picture that the highest temperatures, as they so often are, are in the southern parts of Europe, where it’s also quite dry. It’s going to be quite cold over northwestern parts of Europe for the rest of the day, even some snow in some mountain areas.
In many parts of northern Europe it will be rainy but in the south there will be the best of sunshine. And pretty good but cool in the eastern parts of Europe too.
Now let’s look at tomorrow’s weather. It will be very much the same in the south except that the rain is starting to push up into the northern parts. It will stay fine in Eastern Europe. But still wet and windy in many northwestern parts, and a bit cool too.。
