“There’s nothing to discuss,” shouted my husband when I told him that Rose, our 17-year-old daughter, had asked whether she could go to Kavos, Greece, for a holiday with her f riends. “Of course she can’t. She’s too young to travel w 51 the presence of an adult. It’s completely out of the question.”
So how come I found myself standing, two weeks later, at Gatwick Airport? Tearfully, I watched our eldest child d 52 through the security checkpoint. In four hours’ time, she would be in Kavos. It’s 2, 500 kilometers a 53 from England.
There comes a time when you have to let your baby go—for many parents, it’s around the age of 17. We know that there is likely to be something wilder than hanging around by the pool and building sandcastles, but the time has come to trust that they’ll look after t 54 .
But I still felt worried. Rose tried to put my mind at rest. She said she and her friends would always look after one another and that it really, really was all going to be okay.
After we had waved our last goodbye at the airport, I looked back. She was, to my surprise, looking back at me, too. Teenagers want to cut free, but it’s a f 55 experience for them, too.
We made Rose promise to contact us as soon as she had arrived in Kavos and at least once a day after that. Around 9 a. m. on the first morning, her first m 56 came through. It was twelve hours since I had left her
at Gatwick. And all I got was: “I’m here.”
I wish there were safer places than these so-called teen destinations. But like all the dangers that life can hold for them, at some stage, all you can do is warn them, warn them again, warn them once more, and then hope that everything will be all right.
My daughter got home s 57 . So did her friends. But Rose is now talking about a similar journey next year. And my alarm bells have already started ringing.

“Hey, Dan, you look like the unhappiest guy in the world!” said Ella, as they volunteered as ushers (引座员) at the theater.
“Yeah,” Dan replied, trying to smile. “Remember the role you helped me practise last week? Well, I failed again.” “Oh, Dan, keep practicing! You’ll be on the other side of the curtain one day,” said Ella.
Dan kept practicing. He sang day and night. He sang everywhere he went! He wanted to be an opera singer more than anything else in the world. He volunteered at the theater on Saturdays, but he needed to start earning money to pay for singing and Italian lessons.
One day Dan saw an ad asking for bicycle delivery men. Then he began his new job delivering food to customers all over the city. Dan thought it was very rewarding making hungry people happy, but he had a problem. He wasn’t getting enough time to practice singing. Then one day, he had a great idea.
Dan arrived at 52nd Street. “I have your burgers and your fries,” he sang. “I have your soda and your le-mon-
ade...” The customers were very surprised! When he finished, they cla pped and gave him a nice big tip.
One night, there was an order for lobster soup to a beautiful, big house on the river. Dan rang the bell, took a deep breath and sang, “I have your lovely lobster soup. It smells delicious to me-e-e...”
The door opened slowly and a well-dressed woman appeared. She took the soup, then closed the door, with no tips at all.
A few days later, Dan received a text inviting him to the Opera House.
At the Opera House, a woman greeted Dan. It was the lady who Dan delivered lobster soup to last week. She said, “I am Antonia Allegro, the director here. I’d like to invite you to our next opera. This is your first rehearsal(排练). You’ll practice today. At my house last week, you had one of the most beautiful voice s in the world! You’re so talented! Congratulations. Welcome to the show!”
Dan’s first opera performance was in front of thousands of people, and he didn’t sing about burgers or fries or lemonade!

59.What did Dan want to be instead of an usher?
60.Why did Dan need to start earning money?
