Many countries at the COP26 climate change conference are making promises to help Earth. They have signed agreements to end deforestation and cut methane emission levels by 30 per cent by 2030. Bosses of global companies are also at COP26. Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, made a speech on Tuesday. He promised to give $2 billion to help nature. He said the money would restore landscapes to their more natural state. He also wants to transform food systems to make food production more sustainable. Mr Bezos also set up The Bezos Earth Fund in 2020. This is a $10-billion project to help fight climate change. In September, this fund gave $1 billion to help threatened indigenous peoples.
Jeff Bezos said he decided to give more money to protect the planet after going into space in July. He said that looking at Earth from space made him understand the importance of helping our planet. He said: "Looking back at Earth from up there, the atmosphere seems so thin, the world so...fragile." In his COP26 speech, he said his trip into space changed his feelings about our planet. He said: "I was told that seeing Earth from space changes the lens through which you see the world, but I was not prepared for how much that would be true." He said it was time for all countries and corporations to act. He said: "In this critical year...we must all stand together to protect our world."

Text 1
W: Jack, how do you like the play?
M: It’s a simple story with a happy ending. But luckily they had a very strong actor and he managed to carry the whole play.
Text 2
M: Have we missed it? The man said it’s only 5 blocks away opposite the bank.
W: Wait a minute. The Chinese Restaurant? The National Bank? There it is, the Radisson Hotel.
Text 3
M: Let’s meet at twenty to five.
W: Well, could we make it twenty past five?
M: That’s a bit late for me. I could manage ten past.
W: OK. See you then.
Text 4
M: What time are we leaving for the outing?
W: I’ll phone you tomorrow. I should have everything sorted out by then.
Text 5
W: Thanks for all you’ve done for me. Hey, listen, would you like to go to see a film sometime?
M: Yeah, that’d be great! I’d love it.
Text 6
W: Hey, where is everybody?
M: They took Ben to the park. Where have you been?
W: Sorry, I’m late. I picked up the cake and it took me longer than I expected. When will the party start?
M: Ben invited eight children from school. And they’ll arrive at about 2:00 in the afterno on.
W: OK, then. I’ll put the candles on the cake and leave it in the kitchen. And then I’ll come and help set the table.
Text 7
W: How did you like the dishes, sir?
M: Delicious. Everything was excellent here. Thank you!
W: Do you want some coffee, tea, sir?
M: No, thanks. I’m fine. I’ll just have the bill, please. How much is your service charge?
W: 15%. And it is included in your bill. Thank you very much, sir. We look forward to seeing you again.
M: Sure, good night.
Text 8
W: Can I help you?
M: Yes, my daughter bought this camera here for my wife’s birthday. But it doesn’t work. So I’d like to change it for another one.
W: I see. Let me have a look. Well, we’ll be happy to change it for you, but I’m afraid we don’t have another pink one.
M: Oh, what would I do then?
W: Would you like to choose a different colour? We do have this camera in black and orange.
M: My wife doesn’t like either of those colours.
W: If you want, we can order another camera, just like this one. There wouldn’t be any extra charge for it.
M: That sounds fine. Would you please go ahead and do that?
W: We’d be very happy to. But it’ll take at least a week, maybe 10 days. We’ll call you when it comes in.
M: Thank you very much.
W: You’re welcome.
Text 9
W: Hi, Joe, many people in our department are leaving for Thanksgiving. What are you going to do?
M: I think I’ll just stay at home. I may see some friends and watch a few DVDs and I probably would go to the Ottawa Car Show. What about you, Ariel? What’s your plan?
W: I’m going to do some traveling with my family.
M: Oh, where to?
W: Toronto, and on our way we’re going to visit my aunt Betty in Kinston.
M: That’s exciting. How long do you plan to stay?
W: Two days. I have a get-together party with my college friends on the 10th in Toronto. Oh, I’m afraid I’ve got to go now. My husband is waiting for me, and we’ll have to pick up Daniel from school. Have a nice holiday, Joe.
M: Thank you. You too!
Text 10
M: We’re glad to have Dr Garfield to talk to us today about dreams. Let me start by ask ing the first question. Does everyone dream?
W: It appears that everyone does. Mostly, when people say that they never dream, what they really mean is that they don’t remember their dreams or they don’t think their dreams are important. The reason behind is that they might have been made fun of as a child when they first reported their dreams or it was so frightening that they just turned off dreaming completely. The other day someone named Davis came to me and said that he used to be a great dreamer. But suddenly, he stopped having dreams. I asked him what had happened. It turned out that his brother died of a heart attack. And he never expected that such a terrible thing would happen to a young person. Generally, when there was some frightening event and to dream about it was too terrible, people prefer not to dream about it. Actually, the worst thing you can do is stop dreaming, because it means that the bad experience was too painful to even appear in dreams. As long as you’re dreaming about it and even if the dreams are frightening, your mind is working on it. My personal opinion about what dreams do is that they help us deal with our problems. We see certain patterns take place in dreams when a person is hurt deep inside, when a person is seriously ill or when a person has been really sad. If people turn off their dreams totally, it means they don’t allow themselves to even think about it.

1. W: Did you have any working experience during college?
M: Yes I did some part-time jobs such as tourist guide and salesman. Besides, I worked as a volunteer to visit sick kids in the hospital to cheer them up.
2. M: I didn't expect Jenny to play the violin so well.
W: Actually, she used to be a top player at college.
M: Really? I can hardly believe it.
3. W: I saw an advertisement in the newspaper about a mountain bike you have on special offer.
M: Yes, this one. It's our regular $ 200 mountain bike on sale today for $ 160. So it's $ 40 cheaper now.
W: Great. I'll take it.
4. W: Hey. I'm a visitor from China, I love your music. It's the best I've ever heard. Will you please spare a little bit of time for me?
M: Sure. Thank you for saying that. Actually, those songs were sung for the first time today. I wrote them in the past two months.
5. M: I suppose Jason will be the winner. He has so many friends supporting him.
W: And he himself is very diligent. Considering all these, I think he has the ball at his feet.
6-7
M: Hi, Megan. How are you?
W: Not feeling too good, actually.
M: Oh? Why's that?
W: Well, something terrible happened this morning... (voice trembling)
M: What? Sorry, take your time, and tell me when you're ready.
W: Well, I was playing with my dog Bonzo in the garden with a ball, and the ball flew into the road, and...
M: Yes?
W: And Bonzo jumped after it and he got hit by a car.
M: Oh, no! And is he...?
W: Yes. We took him to the animal hospital immediately, but there was nothing they could do.
M: Oh, poor Bonzo. And poor you. I know how much he meant to you.
8-10
W: Hi, Kevin. Do you have a minute to talk about the meeting next Tuesday?
M: Sure. We said 11, didn't we?
W: Yeah, we did. But I have a bit of a problem with the time. Would it be possible to move it?
M: Oh, I see. We could put it off to the afternoon, to 1 p.m., for example. Or bring it forward to earlier in the morning. What would suit you?
W: Could we make it 9 o'clock? That would really help me. I have another important meeting in the central office at 12.
M: No problem. It's important you're there.
W: Thanks a lot, Kevin.
M: Do you need help with any preparation? Did you get the agenda I sent out?
W: Yes, I did. And no, that's all fine, thanks. My report is ready and I'm looking forward to presenting it.
M: Great.
11-13
M: Mom?
W: Yes?
M: You know that economics exam I had last week?
W: The one you didn't review?
M: I did review it. I was working on it all weekend. Don't you remember?
W: Oh, yes, I remember. Apart from going out until four in the morning, you mean?
M: Well, I have to relax a little. Anyway, I didn't pass it.
W: You failed it! But wasn't that an important one?
M: Yeah, I'm really sorry.
W: I'm really sorry too. What does that mean?
M: Well, I’ll probably have to retake the whole course.
W: Oh, Ryan! It's a really expensive course. I'm not sure we can afford for you to take it
again.
Things are difficult enough as it is.
M: I know. Mom. I'm sorry. I'll talk to the teacher again and see if I can retake it.
14-17
W: So, have you got any plans for the weekend?
M: Yeah, me and my friends are going to this activity centre in the mountains.
W: Oh, yeah?
M: You can do all kinds of things. It's a new centre; it sounds great. We're going to go dirtboarding.
W: What's that?
M: It's like skateboarding or snowboarding. You have a board to stand on and wheels. They're pretty strong because you go down rough mountain tracks on them.
W: Phew. It sounds far too difficult to me. Anyway, I'm going away this weekend too.
M: I was going to ask. So where are you going?
W: Paris! I'm so excited!
M: Paris, wow!
W: Yeah, it'll, be brilliant! We're going to do some sightseeing, like go up the Eiffel Tower and take a boat along the River Seine and see the old parts of the city. It looks so beautiful in the photos. And then there are all the art galleries. You know how much I like art. I can't wait to go round the Louvre and see all those famous paintings.
M: You've got a lot planned for one weekend.
W: Oh, we're going for four days, actually.
18-20
M: You have two new messages. Message number one, received today at 3:45 p.m.
W: Hi Jack, it's me, Betty. How's it going? I guess you're at work and you don't you’re your phone on, right? First of all, thank you, THANK YOU for the birthday card and message. I received it this morning. That's so nice of you. I'm organizing a little party for my birthday. It's nothing very big—only a few of my best and closest friends. That means you too! We're going to have it at my cousin Lucy's house. She lives in the countryside in a nice big house with a
swimming pool. I'd love to see you there. It's going to be this Friday. I’11send you the instructions on how to get there later, OK? Anyway, have fun at work. Don't work too hard, OK? Talk soon.

M: What can we do that’s free and fun?
W: Let’s go to the history museum. Every first Sunday of the month, admission is free. That’s tomorrow! Let’s go. (1)
Text 2
M: Happy birthday! I bought you the new Taylor Swift CD.
W: Thanks! But I already have her CD. I will give it to my sister. She will be so excited. (2) Text 3
W: It will take 10 hours to drive straight to Portland, or we could fly there in two hours. (3) M: We could drive 5 hours and stop in Shasta, and then drive 5 more hours to Portland.
Text 4
M: This is my new favorite store. I got 5 shirts, 3 pairs of pants, and 2 belts for less than $100. And they are all designer clothes!
W: I found some great stuff, too! I can’t believe how low the prices are. (4) This purse was only $25, and it is real leather!
Text 5
W: Can you show me how to save a file on this computer? (5)
M: Sure. Just click the tab that says “file” and hit “save”. Your file should then be on the desktop.
Text 6
W: Are you ready to visit grandma in Springfield? (6)
M: Yes. I just have to get the picture that I drew for her. (6)
W: Great. Let’s put it in this box, so it stays nice and flat.
M: I used the colored pencils that she got me for my birthday to make it, too! She will be
happy about that.
W: Yes, she will. She loves your artwork! I wish I had time to bake a cake. (7)
M: She would have liked that. You are the best baker, Mom.
Text 7
M: Tina, are you coming to band practice this week? Our show is this Friday…only two days away! (8)
W: Yes, I’m coming tonight. I didn’t come last week because my guitar was broken.
M: Did you fix your guitar? My sister has a new guitar you can probably borrow if your guitar is still broken. (9)
W: Thanks, but I can only play music on my guitar because it’s a left-handed guit ar…it’s for people who use their left hands for most things. I fixed my guitar on Monday night.
M: Why didn’t you fix it sooner? We only have two days until our show. (9)
W: I’ve been so busy this month! I have to work at the grocery store and watch my li ttle sister until my mom comes home from work.
Text 8
W: Hi, are you Don? I’m Lynn. I saw the advertisement you put on the Internet about selling your car. (10)
M: Hi, Lynn. Nice to meet you. Thanks for your interest. Here’s my car. It’s a 2006 Honda Civic. I took a lot of road trips in it! It is not perfect, but it is safe to drive and it has new tires.
W: Is anything broken?
M: The radio is broken and the heater is broken, (12) but the air conditioner works well.
W: I think you should lower the price because the radio and the heater are broken. (12) If you don’t lower the price, I don’t think I want to buy it. (11)
M: Sorry, but I’m not lowering the price. It’s a very safe car, even if the radio is broken. Would you like to drive the car so you can see if you like it?
W: No, thank you. I am worried something else is broken too.
Text 9
W: My mom thinks that we should name the baby after her. (13) What do you think?
M: I think your mom is a little too selfish! Plus, I don’t really think “Betty Bettson” soun ds like a name I’d want to have. (13)
W: OK. I just had to ask. I didn’t like the idea much, either. I really love the name Laura, though.
M: That’s nice. But I think we should give her a really strong name so she’s tough. (14) How about Helga or Josephine?
W: Those names make me think of unattractive women! Helga sounds like a lady who could carry me under her arm!
M: That’s the idea! I don’t want anyone thinking they can mess with my daughter. I want her to be able to stand up to people, especially any boys who might try to look at her.
W: I don’t think a name has that much power, dear. (15)
M: OK. I see your point. I’ll just have to take care of the boys myself. I know this baby is going to be beautiful!
W: That’s right. Let’s not give her an ugly name! How about something more elegant, like Victoria? (16)
M: I like that! (16)

Nicholas Sparks is an American author and storyteller whose books have consistently been turned into major Hollywood films. Although not all of his books were sold to Hollywood, all have been The New York Times best-sellers. He has sold over 97 million copies worldwide, (17) with over 65 million of them within the United States alone. He lives with his family in North Carolina. He is also considered to be very generous with his money. In 2011, he created the Nicholas Sparks Foundation to make more opportunities available to children from poor families. He said, “Education is the gift that changed my life.” (20) His foundation, which he started with his wife, creates scholarships for children from low-income families in rural communities. (18) He and his wife also founded the Epiphany School in New Bern, North Carolina. (19) The school’s main goal is to help students practice the values of respect, responsibility, service, and honesty on a daily basis. Sparks has had a very successful career, and he owes that to education. “The education I received growing up prepared me for the world I’d be facing in the future,” the author said. Even though he is worth an estimated 75 million dollars or so, Sparks seems to live the values he presents in his books and films.。
