It was a rainy day and I was walking down the street feeling comfortable and happy. I wanted to do something kind for someone else without any reason and purpose, almost as if I was just trying to spread the abundance (充足) of love I was receiving.
It was then that I saw a teenage girl dressed in tattered clothes, getting soaked(湿透). She wasn’t wearing any sh oes or socks. The rain wet her skin through the holes in her clothes and she was making her way through the garbage, trying to find something that would be of use to her.
I walked towards her and told her to wait for me there while I ran home to get her something. On getting home, I took off my shoes, which I really loved, wrapped them up in a plastic cover and ran to give them to the teenage girl on the street.
The girl looked surprised as if she was not used to this kind of kindness. She thanked me in a trembling (颤抖的) voice.
A famous musician who lives down the street corner stopped his car and smiled
when he saw what happened. The two watchmen who saw me do this talked and gave me friendly looks.
Although I had to wear my dad’s shoes, I was satisfied e ven if they were a bit large for my feet, because I knew the girl would walk comfortably wearing the shoes. That day I learned that letting go of the little things we own can be a big help to others.

In America, when the eighth graders leave the middle school, they are often worried about moving to the high school. It is a hard time for them, but it can be an exciting one as well. To make it easier, students need to get familiar(熟悉的) with their school.
Even though they’ve done this already in the middle school, it’s still important to find where their classrooms are. Most schools take students to the high school for a visit at the end of their eighth grade year. And, most schools also have a freshman(新生) speech for parents and students before the first year begins. Sometimes the main office will give away a map of the school. This can help students and parents to find different places in the school.
One way to know your high school more and make new friends is to join a club or play a sport. Schools often offer chances to join different clubs and sports. Fall activities begin in August before the first day of school. If you are not interested in sports, there are clubs for any interest, such as drama, dance, chess, photography, community service, etc. These clubs allow students from different grades. By joining an activity, students can find new friendships, not to mention improving their chances in future college applications(申请). The school office will have a list of activities offered at the school and information on how to join them.
What’s more, to have a great start to a high school year, students can write down some of their worries, and ask for help from teachers and school workers. 60.According to the text, most students feel ________ when entering the high school.

62.What is the purpose of this text?
A. To tell the new students how to learn in high school.
B. To introduce new schools.
C. To give the teachers some advice.
D. To give advice to new high school students.
63.What would be the best title of the text?
A. Finding a most suitable school.
B. Making high school life colorful.
C. Entering high school more easily.
D. Paying attention to high school education.

It’s always great to hear news about wildlife returning to where they once lived. For the first time in 8 years the small blue --- British’s smallest b utterfly--- has been seen back at a nature reserve in Hertfordshire.
This nature reserve has had a lot of work done recently in order to help butterflies. Management of the land has included bringing in sheep to keep the grass under control in a more natural way and planting wild flowers for butterfly species.
The nature reserve is home to a number of butterfly species. In fact the way that this reserve has been managed means that it is probably the best reserve in Hertfordshire to see butterflies with at least 25 species now living in the area.
There are a number of threats to British butterflies and the greatest threat is the loss of their habitat. Changing farming practice has affected British native butterfly species greatly with many more now being at risk. B. Butterflies are very beautiful.

D. Butterflies can tell us what is happening.

In an age when technology moves faster than most can keep up with, a small group of people still remain in the time of old-fashioned letter. Frankly speaking, I was once certain that traditional letters could never be replaced by other means of communication.
But a story about online communication changed my mind.
An old man, who su ffered a lot from Parkinson’s disease, was not able to talk clearly and could hardly write his name. Living totally alone, he managed to keep in touch with nearly all the members of his family. How did he achieve this? He clicked
out words on his computer keyboard.
I, therefore, managed to get an E-mail box as soon as the chance came. My life changed. E-mail, and all online communication, is something truly different. It has abilities that few other products can match (媲美,相配).
E-mail is convenient. It takes less time with its fast speed and 24-hour connection. The slow postal service is no match. If you wouldn’t want to have a face-to-face talk with your manager, you might talk with him through E-mail even if you are in the same office.
Naming all the good things about online communication is not easy. But wait. E-mail can be inconvenient. It can waste time and energy. Just think what may happen when you take a short vacation and return to find your e-mail box filled with 200 unread messages. You could easily spend half a day clearing junk ads.
Then, online communication will keep us staying at our computer while it connects us to distant strangers. Once we throw ourselves into the machine, we may forget the human touches we once held so dear. I’m sure there i s and always will be a place for the old-fashioned letter, phone call, and face-to-face meeting… even in the world of modern communication.
As I listen to the sound of the modem(调制解调器), I was excited at stepping out to the outside world but, at the same time, I sensed a loss of control over something valuable in my personal life.
67. What is the most probable meaning of the underlined word “junk” in paragraph
6 ?
A. new and useful
B. old and useless
C. short but valuable
D. long but clear
68. What does the writer think of online communication?
A. It should replace old-fashioned letters completely.
B. It is perfect and always does good to you.
C. It is extremely useful and convenient, but it may be inconvenient or even harmful.
D. It does more harm than good.
69. According to the writer, traditional means of communication will never disappear because ______.
A. they help to keep the friendly relationship between people
B. they are convenient and popular though they are slow
C. most people cannot keep up with the development of technology
D. modern means of communication does too much harm
70. How did the sick old man keep in touch with his family members?
A. By visiting them regularly.
B. By writing letters with
his pen.
C. By making telephone calls.
D. With the help of his computer.

Last Saturday, a storm tore though two villages in South Africa, destroying fourteen homes. Seven others were badly damaged that their owners had to leave them, and fifteen others had broken window or torn roofs. One person was killed, several were badly injured and taken to the hospital, and a number of other people suffered minor injuries. Altogether over two hundred people have become homeless as a result of the storm.
A farmer, Mr. Smith, said that the storm began early in the morning and lasted over an hour. “ I was in the kitchen wi th my wife, and our children were still sleeping,” he said, “when we heard a loud noise. We woke our children up immediately.
A few minutes later our house fell down on top of us. We managed to climb out, but then I saw that one of my children was missing. I went back inside and found him, safe but frightened.”
Soilders helped to bring people out of the flooded area, and the government provided food, clothes and houses.。
