(建议用时40分钟)
Ⅰ. 阅读理解
A
In 1959, when Jean Harper was in the third grade, her teacher gave the class an assignment to write a report on what they wanted to be when they grew up. She poured her heart into her report and expressed her dream of becoming an airline pilot. Her paper came back with an“F”on it. The teacher told her it was a“fairy tale”. Jean was heartbroken and ashamed. As the years went by, Jean was beaten down by the discouragement and negativity she encountered whenever she talked about her dream. “Girls can’t become airline pilots; never have, never will. You’re crazy. That’s impossible. ”Finally Jean gave up.
In her senior year of high school, her English teacher was Mrs Dorothy Slaton, a demanding teacher with high standards. One day Mrs Slaton asked this question, “If you had unlimited finances, unlimited access to the finest schools, unlimited talents and abilities, what would you do? ”Jean felt a rush of the old enthusiasm, and with excitement she wrote down the very old dream.
The next thing that Mrs Slaton said changed the course of Jean’s life. The teacher leaned forward over her desk and said, “I have a little secret for you. You do have unlimited abilities and talents. When y ou leave school, if you don’t go for your dreams, no one will do it for you. You can have what you want if you want it enough. ”
The hurt and fear of years of discouragement disappeared all of a sudden. Jean felt thrilled and told her about her dream of becoming a pilot. Mrs Slaton slapped the desk top. “Then do it! ”she said.
So Jean did. It didn’t happen overnight. In her 10 years of hard work, even facing varieties of laugh, frustration and opposition, she never gave up her dream. Instead, she went on doing everything her third-grade teacher said was fairy-tale.
Eventually, Jean Harper became a Boeing 737 captain for the United Airline
Company.

Bonfire Night
Guy Fawkes Day or Bonfire Night is the celebration of the failing of the Gunpowder Plot of November 5, 1605, when Guy Fawkes and a number of Catholic conspirators, inspired by him, tried to blow up the House of Parliament in London. Their plan was to kill James I, the King of England and his family together with the majority of English aristocracy.
This yearly event seems most probable that people admire Fawkes’daring to blow up the Parliament, rather than the fact that his plot failed and he was caught. At the very beginning the Guy Fawkes Day was celebrated only in the United Kingdom, and then in the former British colonies and some regions of Canada.
In Sussex, a historic region in South East England, Guy Fawkes Day is a major festival that centers in Lewes, nowadays a tourist-orientated town. The town centre is closed during the festival and the night begins with costumed torchlight processions organized by local bonfire societies, responsible for the bonfire festivals in Sussex.
In Ottery St Mary, in Devon, there is an old tradition held on November 5th each year, which originated in the 17th century. Weeks before the Guy Fawkes’ night, barrels are soaked with tar. Then, on November 5th, barrels are lit and when the fire begins to pour out, local men lift and carry them on their backs and shoulders. There are also women’s and boy’s barrels on the streets, but they are not as heavy as men’s are, which by the midnight can weigh at least 30 kilos. And people are waiting on the streets to feel the hot touch of the barrels’flame. It is said that the burning barrels cleanse the streets of evil spirits.
In some parts of England autumn fireworks and bonfires are commonly associated with Halloween. This is also the reason why the night of November 5th is less celebrated in Northern Ireland. In the English West Country there is an annual celebration, named the West Country Carnival, with parades of illuminated floats in each town, which lit both sides of it. This celebration also dates back to the Gunpowder Plot of November 5, 1605, and has turned into a major regional festival.

Ladies and gentlemen,
It’s my honor to give a speech here. After-class activities play a important part in our school life. Proper activities help enrich our lives, broaden our horizons or develop our personalities.
Mine own experience can serve as a case in point. When I was in Senior One, I become a member of our drama club, that I used to visit on weekends. Since my participation in various activities organizing by the club, I achieved a lot.
These activities bring me a lot of funs, provide me with good opportunities to develop new friendships and open a window through which I have a brand-new outlook. With so much advantages shown above, why not to join us at once?

It’s known to us all that environmental pollution is becoming a serious problem now. So how should we do to improve it?
From my point of view, everybody is responsible for environmental protection, so we should do our share by disposing of all our litter and waste in the correct, legal way, recycling materials and conserving water and electricity. And also we can plant more trees to reduce pollution. What’s more, never will we use things
like paper cups or disposable chopsticks because they are made of wood.
I believe that doing all these small things will improve our environment and help make our world better to live in.。
