Almost no young people today know who the cartoon character Oswald the Rabbit is, but they certainly recognize his successor, Bugs Bunny. Oswald, Bugs, and hundreds of other characters were created by Walt Disney, perhaps the most famous cartoonist in history.
Born in Chicago in 1901, Walt Disney always wanted to be an artist. After returning from World War I, in which he drove an ambulance, Disney worked as a commercial artist. He enjoyed drawing cartoons more than anything else, and decided to try his hand at a technology that was new at the time, moving pictures.
In the 1920’s, he produced several films wh ere he made cartoon characters move as if by magic. The technique Disney used was painstaking. He made hundreds or even thousands of repeated drawings of the same character. In each drawing, the character was changed just a bit. A film was taken of the series of drawings, and when it was shown, the characters appeared to move. The process, called animation, is still used today, although computers have made the process much easier.
In 1928, Disney created his most famous character, Mortimer Mouse, who we know today as Mickey. The mouse starred in a cartoon called Steamboat Willie, which was unusual because it involved the use of a sound track. Within the next few years, Disney invented many of his other characters.
The list of Disney’s animation successes is long and memorable. It includes Pinocchio, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, and Peter Pan. Perhaps his most remarkable animated film is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Created in 1937, it was an immediate success. Today, more than seventy years later, it is still one of the most popular films for children.

Children and teenagers who spend lots of time in front of screens-especially TVs-are easier to get more weight as they age .according to a new study.
The findings agree with research suggesting all that inactive sitting and always watching advertisements may lead to poor eating habits.
Researchers used results from a long-term study of children Who took surveys every other year. Children were between ages 9 and 16 when the study started. Out of 4,300 girls in the Study. 17 percent were overweight or obese(肥胖的).Twenty-four percent of the 3 .500 boys were also above a healthy weight
The surveys included questions about their height and weight as well as how much time they spent watching TV and DVDs and playing computer and video games.
From one survey to the next, each one-hour increase in children's daily TV watching was in connection with an increase of about 0.1 points on a body mass index(BMI)(体质指数), which measures weight in connection with height. That's a difference of about half a pound per
extra hour of TV.
“The weight of the evidence is so strong that television watching is connected with unhealthy changes in weight among youth,”says Jennifer Falbe . Who led the
study while at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.
“It's important for parents to know all the obesity-causing(引起肥胖的)screens that really should be limited in their children's lives, Falbe says. " When children watch TV. There are many food advertisements on TV that might lead them to eat a cookie or drink a soft drink. " What's mare .she says . " You can get into a hibernating(冬眠) state on the sofa. Even if children are sitting down while playing a computer game. for example. they might be a bit more active.”

My father was Chief engineer of a merchant ship, which was sunk in World War II. The book Night of the U-boats told the story.
Memories
In September, 1940, my mother, sister and I went to Swansea, where my father’s ship was getting ready to sail. We brought him a family photo to be kept with him at all times and keep him sail.
Then I remember my mother lying face down, weeping. She had heard from a friend that the ship had been sunk by a torpedo(鱼雷).
I can remember the arrival of the telegram(电报), which in those days always brought bad news. My grand-mother opened it. It read,“Safe, Love Ted.”
My most lively memory is being woken and brought down to sit on my father’s knee, his arm in a bandage(绷带).
He was judged unfit to return to sea and took a job in Glasgow for the rest of the war. For as long as I can remember, he had a weak heart. Mother said it was caused by the torpedoes. He said it was because of the cigarettes. Whichever, he died suddenly in his early 50s.
Ten years later I read Night of the U-boats and was able to complete the story.
Torpedo
One torpedo struck the ship. Father was in the engine room, where the third engineer was killed. He shut down the engines to slow the ship’s sinking.
By the time he got on deck (甲板) he was alone. Every lifeboat was gone except one which had stuck firm. When he tried to cut it free it swung against the ship, injuring his hand and arm. He had no choice but to jump—still with the photo in his pocket.
Three days later, he and other survivors were safe in Glasgow. All 23 with him signed the back of the photo.
In my room is the book and the photo. Often, glass in hand, I have wondered how
I would have dealt with an explosion, a sinking ship, a jump into a vast ocean and
a wait for rescue? In case we forget, I have some more whisky and toast the heroes of the war.
1. The mother and children went to Swansea ________.
A. to meet a friend
B. to see the father off
C. to take a family photo
D. to enjoy the sailing of the ship
2. What did the author learn about the father from the telegram?
A. he was still alive.
B. His knee was broken.
C. His ship had been sunk.
D. He had arrived in Glasgow.
3. What can we know about the author’s fa ther after his ship was attacked?
A. He lost his arm.
B. He repaired the engines.
C. He managed to take a lifeboat.
D. He was the last to leave the ship.
3. What is the passage mainly about?
A. A group of forgotten heroes.
B. A book describing a terrifying battle.
C. A ship engineer’s wartime experience.
D. A son’s memories of a sea rescue.
D
Today just as technology changed the face of industry, farms have undergone an “agricultural revolution”. On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power.
One of the most important benefits will be the farm computer. A few forward-looking farmers are already using computers to help them run their farms more efficiently. The computers help them keep more correct records so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how many animals to buy, when to sell their products, and how much profit they can expect. Because of the growing importance of computers on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required to take computer classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on computers even more in the future.
Another technological advance which is still in the experimental stage is the robot. Scientists are now developing robots that will be able to shear sheep, drive tractors, and harvest fruit. Even complex jobs will be done by robots. For example, in order to milk their cows, farmers must first drive them into the barn, then connect them to the milking machines, watch the machines, and disconnect them when they are finished. In the future, this will all be done by robots. The complete robotization of the farm is far in the future, but engineers expect that some robots will be used
before long.
1. What does the underlined word “forward-looking” in the second paragraph mean?
A. farseeing
B. young
C. experienced
D. fortunate
2. According to the passage, computers can NOT help farmers decide_________. .
A. how much money they can earn from their products
B. whether to plant a certain kind of crop
C. what animal to raise
D. when to sell their products
3. Which of the following statements is true?
A. Farmers in the future will depend totally on computers.
B. Both computers and robots have been in use on today’s farms.
C. Farmers mainly use machines on their farms at present.
D. Students at agricultural colleges must take computer classes because they can
do nothing without the help of computers on today’s farms.
4. By writing the passage, the author intends to ______________.
A. impress upon readers that computers are farmers’ best friends
B. tell readers what farmers in the future are like
C. inform readers of the technological progress in agriculture
D. help readers to compare computers and robots

One possible version:
Should students make friends on line? Some people say yes .The internet helps make many friends. Chatting on line, students can more freely express their feelings and opinions ,and even get help with their foreign language studies .
Others ,however, think students should not .They say making friends on line is a waste of time ,which should be spent more meaningfully on study .Besides ,some students get cheated on line.
It is my opinion that students should place their study, health and safety before other things .As for friendship, we can readily find it in our classmates and other people around us.。
