Edmund Halley was an English scientist who lived over 200 years ago. He studied the observations of comets which
other scientists had made. The orbit of one particular comet was a very difficult mathematical problem. He could not figure it out. Neither could other scientists who dealt with such problems.
However,Halley had a friend named Isaac Newton, who was a brilliant mathematician. Newton thought he had already worked out that problem, but he could not find the papers on which he had done it. He told Halley that the orbit of a comet had the shape of an ellipse.
Now Halley set to work. He figured out the orbits of some of the comets that had been observed by scientists. He made a surprising discovery. The comets that had appeared in the years 1531,1607,and 1682 all had the same orbit. Yet their appearances had been 75 to 76 years apart.
This seemed very strange to Halley. Three different comets followed the same orbit. The more Halley thought about it,the more he thought that there had not been three different comets,as people thought. He decided that they had simply seen the same comet three times. The comet had gone away and had come back again.
It was an astonishing idea!Halley felt certain enough to make a prediction of what would happen in the future. He decided that this comet would appear in the 1758. there were 53
years to go before Halley’’s prediction could be tested.
In 1758 the comet appeared in the sky. Halley did not see it,for he had died some years before. Even since then that comet had been called Halley’’s comet,in his honor.

I worked for a short time as a cashier at a restaurant a few months ago;I also helped clear off the tables when it was especially busy. One night, just before Christmas,I found a large black wallet on the floor near one of the table. I guess I should have checked it to find out who the owner was,but I was very busy at the time. Also,I imagined that if the wallet contained anything valuable, the owner would be back. Sure enough an hour later a man came up to the counter and asked if
anyone had found a wallet. I asked him to describe the lost wallet, and after he described it exactly,I gave him the wallet. He expressed his sincere thanks when I handed it to him. He asked me if I had opened it,and when I told him ‘‘No“。

He immediately opened it and showed that it contained nearly $ 800 in cash. I gasped as he took out a twenty-dollar bill and handed it to me. ‘‘A reward for your honesty,”he said and then turned and walked away.
Thinking about it later,I began wondering whether I would have been so honest if I had known what was in the wallet!I think that if there had been no way to find the owner and no one had returned to claim it,I might have kept it. Overhead bridges are found in many parts of Beijing, especially in the places where traffic is very heavy and crossing the road is dangerous.
The purpose of these bridges is to enable pedestrians to
cross road safely. Overhead bridges are more efficient although less convenient because people have to climb up a long flight of steps. This is inconvenient especially to older people. When pedestrians use an overhead bridge, they do not hold up traffic. However, when they cross a busy road using a zebra crossing, traffic is held up. This is why government has built many overhead bridges to help pedestrians and to keep traffic moving at the same time.
The government of Beijing has spent a large amount of money in building these bridges. For their own safety, pedestrians should be encouraged to use them instead of risking their lives by dashing across the road. Old people, however, may find it a little difficult to climb up and down the steps, but it is still much safer than walking across the road with all the danger of moving traffic.
Overhead bridges serve a very useful purpose. Pedestrians, both old and young, should make it a habit to use them. This will prevent unnecessary accidents and loss of life.

Procrastinators are people who have a chronic habit of putting things off, usually until the last minute and sometimes until it is too late altogether. The most common reason that procrastinators themselves give for their habit, which they are usually quite willing to talk about even if not willing to change,is that they are lazy. Other typical excuses are that they are undisciplined, brilliant but disorganized,or very poor at organizing their time.
Some procrastinators, however, almost against their very nature, actually get as far as trying to do something about their problem and seek help. Recent research with such people seems to suggest that their difficulties are much more complex than the procrastinators themselves think. The general conclusions are that such people have a vulnerable sense of self-worth,are
particularly fearful of failure, and deliberately put things off precisely so that they never leave themselves time to produce their best work. The reason for their delaying tactics is that, since they do everything at the last moment and under pressure, the procrastinators can retain their illusion of brilliance without ever having to put it to the test.
57. The main idea in the first paragraph is _______.
A. the nature of procrastination.
B. the undisciplined character of procrastination.
C. that disorganization is the procrastin ation’’s main problem.
D. The reasons procrastinators give for their behavior.

C. Disorganization, the True Cause of Procrastination
D. Procrastination:Never Put Off What You Can Do Today Until Tomorrow
59. With which of the following would the author be most likely to agree?
A. Procrastinators are usually unaware of the true causes of their predicament.
B. Laziness, lack of discipline, and poor organization of time are the major causes of procrastination.
C. One thing most procrastinators do is for seeking help for their problem.
D. A procrastinator would automatically fail any real test of his brilliance.
60. All of the following ideas appear in the passage. Which do you think the author attributes most importance to?
A. Some procrastinators seek help for their problem.
B. Procrastinators,in general, put off things deliberately so as to avoid a real test.
C. Procrastinators usually think that they are very bad at organizing their time.
D. Procrastinators sometimes put off things until it is too late.
