Natural disasters have hit Asia hard in recent years, talking hundreds of thousands of lives. But while these tragedies have destroyed homes and lives, they have also created heroes.
The hero: Muelmar Magallanes
The story: As the heavy rain was destroying homes and villagers in Manila, the 18yearold worker jumped into action. Muelmar swam through the floods (洪水) and pulled 30 of his neighbors to safety. After pushing a mother and baby to shore on a small boat, the tired hero was lost in the water, and his body was discovered the next day. “He gave his life for my baby,” said Menchie Penalo sa, the child's mother, “I will never forget him.”
The hero: Tilly Smith
The story: You never know when those lessons learned in geography class will be put to good use. For Smith, just 10 years old at the time, being able to recognize
the warning signs of a tsunami (海啸), saved about 100 lives at a holiday center in Thailand. The English schoolgirl was walking on a beach in Phuket when she noticed the water was coming in, but it wasn't going out again. A tsunami, she realized, was just minutes away. Her father told everyone to leave the beach. That beach was one of the few in Phuket where no one was killed or seriously injured.
The heroes: Aisah, Neneh, Azmi, Nuraida and Sulastri
The story: For these five women from the village of Lampaseh, the tsunami took everything. That day, Aisah lost her 17dayold granddaughter, Nench lost seven of her nine children, Azmi lost her parents, Nuraida lost three of her sisters and brothers, and Sulastri lost her husband, daughter and youngest son. All lost their homes. Everything was gone except for their strong belief. Soon after the tsunami, the five women went back to clean up the village. These women lost nearly everything, except their determination (决心) to rebuild their lives.

And he recently represented families of striking miners killed when the police opened fire on them outside a mine in Marikana last August. He said that Mr. Mandela was stronger than his appearance might suggest.
“Of course I have been saying to people, ‘you should remember Mandela is no longer that young.’ Even if he goes for checkups every now and then, I don't think people should be worried about him,” Zuma, South Africa's President told the BBC. “Let us slow down the worries. He is responding very well and he is in good hands of very good doctors. All of the above will bring comfort to all of us. I would like to really say the country must not panic.”
On Thursday Barack Obama, the US President, said he was deeply concerned about the state of Mr. Mandela's health. Mr. Obama said he believed Mr. Mandela was as strong as he had been in character and in leadership over so many years. President Obama said it was inevitable that people should be concerned about news about Mr.

Not all students know how to prepare for exams. __1__ With teachers' help, students can prepare for exams much better, thus doing better in exams. Here are some ways that teachers can use to help students prepare for exams.
__2__ With youngergrade students, create a list of every topic that they need to study. Oldergrade students can still benefit from a list, even if it's just a list of all the topics they've studied that year. That's because a list gives them something to check off. Throughout your review time, encourage students to mark their topic list, crossing off things that they already know and highlighting or putting a star beside things they know they need to study.
__3__ Don't just stand in front of the class and try to review everything. Instead, students should be the ones looking up things in their notes and trying to remember how to solve problems. The more actively involved (参与的) the students are, the more focused they will be, and the more they will remember.
Have students write quizzes (小测验) for each other. When students write their own quiz questions, they involve more deeply in the material. __4__ After that, have them exchange with another student and take each other's quiz. Finally, they are to grade the quiz they wrote and discuss any wrong answers with the student who took their quiz.
Give students a practice exam. __5__ Usually on the last review day, I will give a practice exam-a short, ungraded test that has similar questions as what will be tested in the exam. We then go over it during the second half of the class. It's really helpful.
