This non-profit organization is the brainchild of Gloria Gilbert Stoga, a kind-hearted woman from New York PBB is a program in which specially-selected prisoners from prisons are trained in the preparation of puppies to become service dogs for the handicapped(残疾人), or police dogs to serve police forces.
My wife and I were so moved when we watched the program. It is a win-win situation at all points. First, it makes a prisoner, who may never have the chance to be released, go back to the community by joining in this program and offering every minute of every day working, loving, and training a puppy for future service. It is difficult for them, but they realize the importance of this program. In addition, most of them have the chance ( for the first time in their lives) to experience warm love through an animal.
Second, the program saves tens of thousands of dollars that it would cost to train these dogs through traditional ways. All donations to the program are used to buy dog food, training supplies, and veterinary care.
Finally, our society benefits from service dogs which can protect people from danger, search and rescue humans after a serious disaster, or become the lifeline for a handicapped person. The last of these goes far beyond the fact that dogs can open.
Fridges, answer the phone or do a dozen other daily tasks. They give a sense of freedom back to a person who has had it taken away by illness, accident, or warfare.
Because of this we have given a lot of monetary support of this meaningful program.

C.To call on people to care for dogs.
D.To praise Gloria and her workmates.
22.(8分)Music has a great effect on everyone. But does music affect plants, too? People have been experimenting with music for almost three decades. From school-level projects to higher-level scientific experiments, the effect of music on plants has been a confusing and debatable topic.
We know music is sound and sound is nothing more than a wave. Plant growth is a result of the cell division that takes place within the cells. But why is music associated with plant growth? In humans, music has a strong effect on our health and mood, and over the years, people have claimed that the same effect has been observed on plants, too. Plants are sensitive by nature, and many people claim that they have feelings just as humans do. There are stories about plants shedding tears. Although scientists do not support these as facts, these myths have led them to take up various experiments on plants.
Various studies have proved that plants respond to acoustic (音响的) energy. It increases their rate of growth and their size, and influences their overall health. Dan Carlson, after a thorough study over a span of many years, has reached a conclusion
that music helps plants absorb nutrients(养分) more efficiently.
It took Dan about fifteen years to develop a foliage spray (叶面喷剂) that is used beneficially with the sound frequencies. Carlson calls this spray “Sonic Bloom”. His findings have proved to be beneficial for countless farmers and have resulted in-according to Guinness Book of World Records-the largest indoor plant on record.
The Purple Passion was treated with the Sonic Bloom process. It grew to be 1,300 feet tall and was alive even after 25 years. Its normal lifespan(寿命), however, is 18 months and it grows not more than 18 feet tall. The book, Secret of the Soil, writes about Sonic Bloom and its results. Sonic Bloom is also sold in the market.
1、What inspired scientists to experiment with plants?

A.Nutrients are important to plants.
B.Music can have some good effects on plants.
C.How the rate of growth of plants can be improved.

3、What did Dan Carlson develop?
A.A spray called “Sonic Bloom”.
B.A method to grow larger plants.
C.A special plant that grows very fast.
D.Acoustic energy that plants respond to
4、Why is the Purple Passion included in Guinness Book of World Records?
A.It is the oldest indoor plant.
B.It is the largest indoor plant.
C.It gives off the most pleasant smell.
D.It can grow in the toughest conditions.
23.(8分)When 12 girls from San Fernando high school in California received a grant (助学金) to develop an invention to solve a real-world problem, they decided to create a solar-powered shelter. Now for over a year, the girls have been working after
school and over the winter and spr ing breaks to complete their project. “They have this amazing drive that I've never seen before, ” said Violet Mardirosian, a math teacher at San Fernando High. “I thought at the beginning that maybe some of them would give up, saying 'I didn't expect this much work,' but they don't. They're just working hard and they're not giving up.”
Living in a low-income community (社区), the girls have seen the problem of homelessness first-hand, which is why they chose that population to create a product for. Many of them are also from immigrant families and hope the solar-powered shelter might help refugees(难民). Seventeen-year-old Maggie Mejia said that while she had no engineering experience, the girls figured out as a team how to create the prototype (雏形), using how-to videos and books that taught them how to code. But the most important lesson she's learned over the course of the project isn't technical. “I've learned a lot about helping others, helping the community and showing a better world to other people,” she s aid.
The girls have been invited to MIT to show their invention. Mardirosian says all the participating students have expressed interest in going into STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) fields and that students from lower grades are already expressing interest in being involved next year. She says, “Many of them didn't think about engineering before. They thought maybe they're not made out to be an engineer. But working together, now they realize they're all needed in this field. Everyone has found their importance in this picture.”
1、Why did Mardirosian think some girls would quit the subject?
A.It was not practical in real life.
B.It demanded a lot of time and energy.
C.It was not supported by their math teacher.
D.It required a lot of money and expert knowledge.
2、Why did the girls decide to create a solar-powered shelter?
A.To save energy. B.To win a scholarship.
C.To help the homeless. D.To be admitted to MIT.
3、According to Maggie, what is the most valuable lesson she has learned from the project?
A.How to code. B.The power of teamwork.
C.The way to teach herself. D.How to make the world a better place.
4、What does Mardirosian think of the project?
A.It taught girls to be independent. B.It should be continued next year. C.It inspired girls' interest in STEM. D.It showed the importance of engineering.

Why are we here in this world? What is the purpose of life? Humans have tried to discover the meaning of life for thousands of years, but failed to get the answer, because the meaning of life is different from person to person.
Each one of us has his or her special purpose and path, unique and different. As we travel on our life path, we will learn many great lessons in order to fulfill that purpose. Learning our lessons well is the key to discovering the real meaning of our own life.
As we travel through our lifetime, we may be taught hard lessons that others don't have to face, while others spend y ears struggling with problems we don’t need to deal with. We may never know why we love English, not physics, which indicates that our path is different. While traveling on our own path, sometimes alone, we should, first of all, take a basic lesson in openness.
Openness means being receptive. Life will present us with so many lessons, none of which are useful to us unless we can recognize them and are open to their values. These lessons arc not easy to learn, but we should regard them as gifts. But how can we recognize these lessons? It is a matter of what “glasses” we are wearing at the time. It is not difficult to spot them if we take them as opportunities. So when we are not open to learning our lessons, failing a weekly English test might be like a disaster rather than an opportunity to us. Of course, the hard lessons may not be fun, but they can actually be the biggest gifts we receive from life.
1、The author may be in favor of the viewpoint that all men are born . A.equal B.different
C.to learn lessons D.ready for challenge
2、The example of “we love English, not physics" is mentioned to show that
we .
A.choose our own path in life
B.need to face some hard lessons
C.discover the meaning of our own life
D.realize the necessity of openness
3、Whether we can see life lessons as gifts depends upon our . A.angles of view
B.common value system
C.experiences from life
D.willingness to face challenge
4、What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Life and lesson B.Life as School
C.Life School and Students D.Gifts from Life

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、As we all know, keeping friendship is not so easy as making friends. Therefore, it is important for us to know how to get along well with our friends. In order to win lifelong friendship, we should obey the following rules.
To begin with, we should be honest with our friends. Lies will surely make them stay far away from us. Second, we should become good listeners as well so that we can have a good understanding of one another. Third, we’d better be humble. If we are too proud before our friends, we can hardly win their respect. Finally, we should not be selfish and should be ready to help our friends whenever they are in trouble, for a friend in need is a friend indeed.
In a word, as long as we obey the rules that are mentioned above, we will find it easy to get on well with our friends.。
