13、When the great library of Alexandria was burned, the story goes, one book was saved. It was not a valuable book, and so a poor man bought it for a few copper coins (铜钱). Between its pages there was something very interesting. It was a thin paper on which was written the secret of the touchstone!
The touchstone was a small pebble (卵石) that could turn any common metal into gold. The writing explained that it was among thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly like it. But the secret was this: the real stone would feel warm, while ordinary pebbles were cold.
So the man camped on the seashore and began testing pebbles. He thought that if he picked up ordinary pebbles and put them down again, he might pick up the same pebble hundreds of times. So, when he felt one that was cold, he threw it into the sea.
He spent a whole day doing this but none of them was the touchstone.
The days became weeks and the weeks into months. One day, however, he picked up a pebble and it was warm. He threw it into the sea before he realized what he had done. He had formed such a strong habit of throwing each pebble into the sea. So when the one he wanted came along, he still threw it away.
So it is with opportunity. Unless we are careful, it’s easy to fail to recognize an opportunity when it is at hand. And it’s just as easy to throw it away.

C.Never judge a person or a thing by appearance. D.Opportunity only visits the ready and watchful mind.

14、What’s going to happen in the future? Will robots control ou r planet? Will computers become smarter than us? Not likely. But here are some things that scientists say are most likely to happen in 10 to 30 years from now, according to the BBC.
Digital money
We used to pay with cash(现金) for everything we bought. Now when we use a credit card(信用卡) to shop online, money is spent without us seeing it. That means we are already using digital money. Using a card is much easier than searching our pockets for change. It is also safer than carrying a lot of cash.
When ATM card s were first introduced, they were not accepted everywhere. But now it’s hard to live without them. It’s reported that people in Sweden completely stopped using cash last year, and the US might be next.
Bionic(仿生的) eye
It’s no longer something only in a sc ience fiction movie. People who are blind may have a chance to get their sight
back---by wearing bionic eyes.
A blind eye can no longer sense light, but a bionic eye can use a camera to “see” the environment and send data(数据) to the mind. Now the bionic eye only allows patients to see lights and unclear shapes. A high resolution(高清的) image could be just a few years away.
Self-driving cars
Unlike a human driver, a self-driving car won’t get distracted(分神) by a phone call, the radio or something outside the window. Sensors(探测器) and cameras on the car would allow it to stick strictly to the rules of the road and keep a safe distance from other cars. This would greatly reduce the number of road accidents. You could even take a nap while the
car drives itself. In the future, driver-less cars would be widely accepted.

15、On a hot day, many people like to go to the beach. Some beaches, however, are not safe for swimming. If the water is not clean, it isn't safe to swim. Sometimes the waves(海浪) can be so strong that people can be pulled out to sea.
At some beaches, there are sharks(鲨鱼) in the water. People put out shark nets(网). They help stop too many sharks from getting close to the beach. Sharks can still swim under or around the net. But if they try to swim through, they will get caught. Sharks can die if they are not cut free.
Shark nets don't just catch sharks. They can catch other sea animals, too. They have caught dolphins, turtles and so on. Even a whale(鲸鱼) has been caught in a shark net. It took many people to get it free. Some animals are not so lucky. They die in the nets.
One day, a whale was swimming with her calf. The calf got caught in a shark net. The mother whale tried to get the
calf to come with her. The calf was in the net. It couldn't get free. The mother had to watch it die.
Many people think shark nets should not be used. Sharks are important in the ocean. They mainly eat sick and dead fish. They help to keep the ocean clean. Sharks are the lions and the tigers of the sea. Some people think there are other ways to keep the beach safe for people.
Shark spotters are people who watch for sharks. They go to a high place. Then they can look down on the beach. If they see a shark, they will make a loud sound. They put up a white flag. Then people know to get out of the water. After all, the water is a shark's home.

17、Have you ever stayed in a hotel? Most Chinese hotels often provide guests with things like disposable(一次性的) toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and slippers. Many guests like the idea because they don't have to bring their own. But, if you travel to Beijing, remember to bring your own things. Starting from June, some hotels in Beijing will no longer provide guests with these disposables. They want to ask people to use less disposable things.
Many disposable things are made of plastic. People throw them away after only using them once. It is a waste of natural resources and is very bad for the environment. Do you know, one Chinese person makes as much as 400kg of waste a year! Most of that waste comes from disposable things. In Beijing, people throw away about 19,000 tons of plastic bags and 1,320 tons of plastic lunch bowls every year! Plastic can take between 100 and 400 years to break down. So the less plastic we throw out, the better. So, wherever you travel, bring your own things and use them again and again.
Back at home and school, you can also do something to make our world a better place. Try to do these things in your daily life: Use cloth shopping bags, not plastic ones. After using a plastic bag, wash it out and let it dry. Then you can use
it over and over again. Do not use paper cups. At your school canteen(食堂), use your own bowl and chopsticks instead of disposable ones.

A.Use shopping bags made of plastic.
B.Do not throw away paper cups.
C.Do not forget to reuse daily necessities(日用品) if possible.
5.We can tell from the story that .
A.people don't like disposable things at all
B.we can't use paper or plastic bowls at school
C.we should use less plastic things and protect our environment

"I must also keep fit by doing physical exercise. If my parents are too weak to move around,I can be strong enough to take care of them. When I am old,my son can also pay less attention to taking care of me..."
When I read this,I felt very sorry.I used to complain that Mom didn't understand me and couldn't give me everything I wanted.I always thought there was a wide gap(沟)between us.But now I completely understand her.How great she is! 19、Dear Tom,
You must be excited about coming to China soon. Let me give you some suggestions and advice about Chinese customs. When you meet somebody for the first time in China, you should shake han ds and say, “How do you do?” You don’t need to bow or kiss the side of the face. When you are eating at the table, it’s impolite to stick your chopsticks into the food. You are not supposed to point others with your chopsticks. You’d better not speak with your mouth full. In our house, you’re supposed to take off your shoes before entering the house. It’s impolite to show up at someone’s house for the first time with empty hands.
Have a safe trip, and I look forward to meeting you soon!
Yours,
Li Ming。
