Scientists in Mexico say they may have found a way to cut the production of methane
(甲烷), a gas linked to rising temperatures on the Earth's surface. The scientists say their method may help reduce the methane released by cows, one of the main producers of the gas.
When talking about global warming, many people think of carbon dioxide, another heat-trapping gas. However, methane is an even more powerful heat-trapping gas. Anyhow, cows are known to produce high levels of methane.
Researchers at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico are studying how a cow's diet affects the production of methane. The researchers are using a specially designed machine to measure the effect. The scientists use the machine to try to measure the animal's breathing to examine the methane released.
Most of the gas is released when cows eat and process food. The digestive (助消化的)bacteria in a cow's stomach causes the animal to send out the gas through its mouth. There are an estimated 1.3 to 1.5 billion cows in the world. Each animal releases as much as 120 kilograms of methane per year. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that, whenever measured in pounds, the effect of methane on climate change is more than 25 times greater than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period.
As it is difficult to capture the gas released by cows for use as energy, one way to lessen its release is to change their diet. Scientists in some countries
are looking for ways to decrease cow methane. But while they are trying different plants and chemical compounds, those products would be too costly and difficult to bring to Mexico.
(1)How harmful is the gas sent off by cows?
A: It is more harmful than carbon dioxide.
B: It takes up most of human-caused methane.
C: It is more difficult to control its amount.
D: It is the key factor to prevent globe warming.
(2)How is the harmful gas produced by cows?
A: When their gas meets with air.
B: When they breathe in air through mouths.
C: When their gas is being sent out.
D: When they digest food in their stomachs.
(3)What can scientists in some countries do to settle the problem caused by cows?
A: Use their gases as energy.
B: Change what they eat.
C: Limit the number of cows.
D: Fix machines on their mouths.
(4)What may be the best title for the text?
A: Cows Are Much More Harmful than Cars
B: We Had a Better Method of Raising Cows
C: Two Gases Are Causing the Warming of the Planet
D: Researchers Found a Way to Reduce Methane from Cows
The scientists say their method may help reduce the methane released by cows, one of the main producers of the gas.
When talking about global warming, many people think of carbon dioxide, another heat-trapping gas. However, methane is an even more powerful heat-trapping gas.
Most of the gas is released when cows eat and process food. The digestive
(助消化的)bacteria in a cow's stomach causes the animal to send out the gas through its mouth.
根据最后一段中one way to lessen its release is to change their diet.
The scientists say their method may help reduce the methane released by cows, one of the main producers of the gas.
I was recently surfing the Internet when I came across a collection of strange beach photos where everyone had a cloth wall surrounding their little patch of sand. I had never seen anything like it before, and I was curious. So I started searching for all sorts of phrases that might throw light on the mystery of Polish beach separators.
At first, I only found copies of the same photos I had originally found, with no other information, but eventually I found a Russian site on Poland affairs that actually covered this"phenomenon"quite exactly. According to the site, beach separators have been part of Polish beach-going culture for a long time, but have recently been getting a lot of attention online, after foreign tourists started posting photos on social networks like Facebook.
Beach separators vary in. size according to the size of the group. You'll see tiny ones only surrounding the space around a single beach, towel, and giant ones separating a large part of the beach. They. weren't designed to protect their users from prying
(探查的)eyes. I's no secret that strong winds are very common on the shores of the Baltic Sea, so they were originally meant to allow beach-goers. to enjoy
sunbathing without having their belongings blown away, or sand blown in their faces.
However, in recent years, people have begun blaming them. During the summer, beach separators are placed so close to each other that a person can hardly pass between them, let alone find a place to set their own beach towels. This creates a problem for foreign tourists unfamiliar with them, who just want a place to lie down on the sand.
The huge popularity of beach space separators is special to Poland, and having visited a fair number of seaside resorts across Europe, I admit that I have never seen anything like this before.
(1)What is the purpose of tourists'setting beach separators around them?
A: To protect themselves from thieves.
B: To protect themselves from prying eyes.
C: To keep themselves and their belongings safe.
D: To attract a lot of attention around themselves.
(2)What can we infer about beach separators from the passage?
A: They are becoming popular in other countries.
B: They are actually a special tradition in Poland.
C: They have aroused worldwide tourists'interest.
D: They are part of man-made scenery in Poland.
(3)What is the best title of the passage?
A: Poland's New Attraction
B: A Special Culture
C: Space for Beach Towels
D: Beach Space Separators
根据第三段中的"..so they were originally meant to allow beach-goers to enjoy sunbathing without having their belongings blown
away, or sand blown in their faces"可知,这些沙滩空间分隔物的目的是防止东西被海风吹走和沙子吹到脸上。
According to the site, beach separators have been part of Polish beach-going culture for a long time"和最后一段中的"The huge popularity of beach space separators is special to Poland"可知,沙滩空间分隔物已经是波兰海滩文化长期以来的一部分了,是波兰人的传统习惯。
An international group of electronic music composers is taking beats from the dance club to jungles and forests and back, all to help save nature's greatest singers. A Guide to the Birdsong of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean is a new album that includes the sounds of endangered birds. The album will come out next month, whose proceeds will go directly towards efforts to save birds.
The whole project was born out of this idea of trying to combine birdsong, electronic music and conservation. A Guide to the Birdsong of Mexico, Central. America and the Caribbean was organized by activist, music producer, Robin Perkins. He invited artists from each of the endangered
birds' homelands to build their own songs around the birds' songs. There are contributions from ten artists in eight different countries.
First single Black Catbird was created by The Garifuna Collective, from Belize. Al Obando, guitarist and producer of the group, always took in national parks and viewed birds when on the road with the band. "There are no trails, and there are no signs there to tell you about what you're seeing," Obando says. "So we're trying to do something for the birds and nature tourism."
Another musician who responded to Robin's call is Tamara Montenegro, an artist from Nicaragua. She was shocked to hear of the serious situation of the Guardabarranco after being approached: "This beautiful creature I grew
up adoring also faced the influence of the systematic human activities". In response, she created a song inspired by this bird and the challenges it faces to live naturally.
The new album is the second edition, following on from A Guide to the Birdsong of South America, produced by Robin in 2015. That first album has raised, to date, over 15,000 benefitting conservation projects in South America. As with the first album, all of the money from the sales of the new album will support specific organizations, including Birds Caribbean.
(1)What does the underlined word "proceeds" in Paragraph 1 refer to? A: Profits.
B: Budgets.
C: Challenges.
D: Effects.
(2)What do we know about Al Obando?
A: He created a hit single himself.
B: He was fond of observing birds.
C: He was the organizer of the new album.
D: He did a lot for birds in South America.
(3)Why was Tamara astonished to learn of the Guardabarranco?
A: It was friendly to humans.
B: It was beautiful in appearance.
C: It was losing its living environment.
D: It was facing challenges from other birds.
(4)What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A: To collect money for a project.
B: To popularize electronic music.
C: To recommend some famous artists.
D: To introduce a new album of electronic music.

Find a study partner. Make friends with someone in your class and schedule a regular study session
(3)________ Think of the process like storytelling—turn your homework into stories and tell those stories to each other. In addition to making a new friend, you and your study partner will keep each other accountable all term long.
(4)________ And not just when you're struggling. Open lines of communication with your professor early so that when questions arise, your professor will know you have a great interest in the class and the material. Developing strong relationships with teachers will also help you if you are considering applying for scholarships.
Consider a part-time job. If you are having trouble managing your study time, you might think getting a job will only worsen the problem

(2)or', '
(3)formed', '
(4)which/that', '
(5)are called', '
(6)is', '
(7)themselves', '
(8)walking', '
(9)accuracy', '
(10)for'
(1)wealthy
此处until it got too big和until they died是两个并列成分,表示选择关系,故用连词or。
故填or。
(3)formed
(4)which/that 考查关系代词。
which/that。
(5)are called
The parts of a museum与动词call为被动关系,故用其被动语态。
The parts of a museum为复数形式,故填are called。
本句中a small part of后的名词为a museum's collection,为单数可数名词,故填is。
(7)themselves
(8)walking

compete for...with...
故填for。

When I was 9 years old, I used to cut grass for Mrs. Long. The elderly lady paid me very little, for she hadn't much money. But she did promise me, "When Christmas comes, I shall have a present for you." I spent much time wondering what it would be. The boys I played with had baseball gloves and bicycles and ice skates, and I was so eager to acquire any one of these that I convinced myself that Mrs. Long intended choosing from among them.
"It would hardly be a baseball glove," I reasoned with myself. "A woman like Mrs. Long wouldn't know much about baseball." Since she was old and weak, I also ruled out the bicycle, for how could she handle such a large item.
On my last Saturday at work, Mrs. Long said, "At Christmas you come to the door and collect the present." These words clinched(确定)my guess. Since she was going to have the present in her house and handle it herself, unquestionably she was giving me a pair of ice skates.
I became so convinced of this that I could imagine myself upon the skates and the excitement they brought me. As the cold days of November arrived and ice began to form on the ponds, I began to try my luck on the ice. "Get away from that ice!" a man shouted. "It's not strong enough yet."
As Christmas approached, it was with difficulty that I restrained(抑制)myself from reporting to Mrs. Long and demanding my present. On the 21st of December, icy weather froze all the ponds so that boys who already had ice skates were able to use them. My longing to possess mine became overpowering.
So the next day I could control myself no longer and presented myself at Mrs. Long's door. "I've been waiting for you," she said with a smile.
