Seventeen-year-old Nadia Clarke talks about her African experience.
Last summer I got the chance to spend a month helping out in a hospital in Africa. I had one year left at school, and I thought it was the good chance to get some experience and to see if I really wanted to be a doctor.
It was a month that changed my life. I was introduced to a world that is very different from
mine in so many ways. I was horrified at how poor so many of the families over there are and how difficult their lives can be. But I was also amazed at how positively people go about their everyday lives. I never forget the way they come together and help each other.
My work in the hospital was hard. I spent a lot of time cleaning floors and changing bed sheets, but I also spent some time looking after the patients. And I got the chance to talk to some doctors and ask them about their work. I saw some truly awful things in the hospital, but none of them changed my mind about being a doctor. In fact, they only made me more determined (坚定的) to do medicine!
When I finish, I know exactly what I’m going to do: I want to work for an international organization like the Red Cross and spend my life helping people in other countries who haven’t been as lucky in life as me.

An elephant and a crocodile were quarrelling about who was the better.
“Look at my strength,” said the elephant. “I can pull up a tree, roots and all, with my trunk.”
“Ah! But your skin is not nearly so thick as mine,” replied the crocodile, “no knife or tooth can cut through it.”
Just as they were talking, a lion happened to pass. “Let me know why you were quarrelling.” said the lion.
“Will you tell us who is the better one?” cried both at once.
“Certai nly,” said the lion, pointing across the river. “Do you see the metal hat on that wall?”
“Yes.”
“Well, then,” said the lion, “go and get it and bring it to me, then I can tell you.”
They started off. The crocodile was soon standing beside the wall. There he waited till the elephant came up. When he saw the crocodile had no way of reaching the hat, the elephant raised his long trunk and took it down easily.
They then made their way back. The elephant was trying to keep up with the fast-moving crocodile in the water and became careless. When he tried to avoid a floating tree branch, the elephant dropped the hat and it fell to the river bottom. So the crocodile dived and brought it up in
his huge mouth. They returned and the crocodile put the metal hat at the lion’s feet. The lion took it up and said to the elephant, “Because of your size and trunk, you reached the hat on the wall, but having lost it. You couldn’t get it back.”And then the lion said to the crocodile, “Although you couldn’t reach the hat, you could dive for it and save it. You are both wise in your own ways.”
