New York Times----A gunman killed eight people at a mall in Omaha this afternoon and then killed himself, setting off panic among holiday shoppers, the police said.
“The person who we believe to be the shooter has died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds,” Sergeant Teresa Negron of the Omaha Police Department said. “We have been able to clear t he mall,” she said. “We don’t believe we have any other shooters.” The police said that at least five other people had been injured in the shootings.
She did not give the shooter’s identity. “We are still conducting the investigation,” Sergeant Negron said, adding that the city’s mayor, who was out of town, was on his way back to Omaha.
She said the police received a 911 call from someone inside the Westroads Mall on the west side of Omaha, and shots could be heard in the background. The first police officers arrived at the mall six minutes after the first call, she said, but by then the shootings were over.
It is reported that the gunman left a suicide (自杀) note that was found at his home by relatives. A law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity(匿名)said the note indicated that the gunman wanted to “go out in style.”
The shootings broke the usual routine of holiday shopping. The gunman was said by some witnesses to have fired about 20 shots into a crowd. Some customers and workers ran screaming from the mall, while others dived into dressing rooms to hide from the shooter.
Shoppers and store workers were trapped inside the mall, which has roughly 135 stores. Others streamed out of mall exits with their hands raised. President Obama was in Omaha this morning to deliver a speech, but he had left the city by the time the shootings took place.

Scientists estimate that more than 60 percent of cancer deaths in the United States are preventable through lifestyle changes. Although there is no certain way to avoid all cancers, reducing individual risk factors significantly decreases the likelihood of getting many forms of this dangerous disease.
The American Chemical Society estimates that smoking causes nearly 30 percent of all cancer deaths in the United States — that is, about 166,000 cancer deaths each year. All cancer deaths caused by tobacco smoking could be prevented completely by not smoking and not using smokeless tobacco. For those who already smoke, quitting will reduce the risk of developing cancer. Studies show that after about ten years of not smoking, a past smoker’s risk lowers to about the level of those who have never smoked.
After quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet is the best way to lower the risk of cancer. Certain foods have been found to protect against cancer. Among these foods are cabbages, tomatoes, soy products, and foods high in vitamins A, C, and E. In addition, green and possibly black teas contain compounds that protect the body from cancer-causing substance.
To lower cancer risk, diets should include little or no red meat. Other foods to avoid or consume in moderation include sugar, fat from animal products, and salt. Added fats and oils should come from vegetables, such as olives or corn, rather than from animal sources.
Carbohydrates (碳水化合物)should come from whole grains, such as brown rice and
whole wheat bread, rather than from processed foods, such as white rice and white bread. The risk of cancer of the esophagus(食道)increases with heavy alcohol consumption, and
many studies suggest that consuming alcoholic drinks increases the risk of breast cancer as well. Studies show that limiting intake to two drinks a day for men, and one drink per day for women, reduces cancer risk.
Low levels of physical activity have been implicated(牵连)in some cancer. Moderate activity for 30 minutes a day enhances the immune system, shortens the time food takes to move through the intestines(肠), and changes body composition and hormone levels. Researchers are studying how these effects might lower cancer risk.
72. Which do you think is the best title for this passage?
A. Lifestyle and disease.
B. Causes of cancers.
C. Tips for cancer prevention.
D. Ways to remain healthy.
73. Which of the following is true according to the author?
A. A person drinking tea regularly will not be likely to suffer from cancer.
B. Once a smoker has stopped smoking, there is almost no chance of getting cancers.
C. A balanced diet is absolutely effective in preventing one from getting cancer.
D. Those who have quitted smoking for 10 years and non-smokers have about the
same cancer risk.
74. What kind of people increase their chances of getting cancers?
A. Those whose foods contain less sugar, animal fat, and salt.
B. One who is not moderate in drinking or eating.
C. Those who have one or two drinks regularly.
D. Those whose diet contains little red meat and a lot of vegetables.
75. The last paragraph implies that _______.
A. food’s staying in one’s body for too long a time might be related to a kind of cancer
B. the reasons why physical activity lowers cancer risk are clear
C. the more you exercise, the lower cancer risk you will take
D. plenty of physical exercise is most important for one to remain healthy
Section C
Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.
76. ______
Museums are places where collections of objects are preserved and put on show. The objects may be anything found in nature made by man. There are museums devoted to art, science, history, industry, and technology.
77. ______
But museums are no longer just storehouses for collections. Today nearly all museums, large or small, carry on educational programmes. Museums offer guided tours, lectures, films, music recitals, art lessons, and other attractions. Many large museums have large libraries open to qualified researchers. Often museums collect more objects than they have room to display. The best are chosen for exhibition, and the rest are kept in a study collection. These study collections can be used by students, researchers, and scholars.
78. ______
Museums work constantly to improve their collections and ways of displaying them. All museums share a common aim—to attract visitors and help them to understand and enjoy the collections. Museums are always on the watch for new additions to their collections. Museums also accept gifts, but the large museums no longer accept everything that is offered to them. They accept only objects of collections that meet their high standards.
79. ______
Museums often arrange loan exhibitions of important works from private owners, art dealers and other museums. In this way a famous masterpiece may be viewed by people who otherwise might never have the chance to see it. For example, in 1963 the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City exhibited one of the world’s most famous ladies: Mona Lisa, painted by Leonardo da Vinci. The government of France had lent the painting to the United States. Attendance at the Metropolitan had reached an all-time high during the month the Mona Lisa was shown there.
80. ______
What is to be gained from visiting museums? Museum exhibits can teach us about the world in which we live ----the materials it is made of, the trees, and plants that cover it, and the animals that have lived on it since its beginning. We can learn about the activities of man----his history and development and his accomplishments in arts and crafts. Most people see a great work of art for the first time in a museum. We can see wonderful examples of what man had been able to create out of clay, stone, metal, and wood or with a paintbrush and paints. We cannot all be explorers or collectors in other lands. But in a museum we can enjoy for ourselves the objects that have been gathered from every part of the world.
Section D
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.
A study involving 8,500 teenagers from all social backgrounds found that most of them are ignorant when it comes to money. The findings, the first in a series of reports from NatWest that has started a five-year research project into teenagers and money, are particularly worrying as this generation of young people is likely to be burdened with greater debts than any before.
University tuition fees(学费) are currently capped at £3,000 annually, but this will be reviewed next year and the Government is under enormous pressure to raise the ceiling.
In the research, the teenagers were presented with the terms of four different loans but 76 per cent failed to identify the cheapest. The young people also predicted that they would be earning on average £31,000 by the age of 25, although the average salary for those aged 22 to 29 is just £17,815. The teenagers expected to be in debt when they finished university or training, although half said that they assumed the debts would be less than £10,000. Average debts for graduates are £12,363.
Stephen Moir, head of community investment at the Royal Bank of Scotland Group which owns NatWest, said, “The more exposed young people are to financial issues, and the younger they become aware of them, the more likely they are to become responsible, forward-pl anning adults who manage their finances confidently and effectively.”
Ministers are deeply concerned about the financial pressures on teenagers and young people because of student loans and rising housing costs. They have just introduced new lessons in how to manage debts. Nikki Fairweather, aged 15, from St Helens, said that she had benefited from lessons on personal finance, but admitted that she still had a lot to learn about money.
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN EIGHT WORDS.)
81. What do many British teenagers have in common regardless of their social
backgrounds?
82. By saying “to raise the ceiling” in Para. 2, the author means “______”.
83. Stephen Moir believes that young people are more likely to be confident and effective

project?

作文参考范文:
The recent years has seen a widespread use of copycat products, which are involved in people’s daily life because of their lower prices. Moreover, with the complete and same functions, they can satisfy people’s daily needs. So, in some people’s eyes, why do we waste a lot of money to buy those expensive name brands while their copycat products offer whatever we need?
However, some insist on abolishing all the copycat products. They argued that there is no guarantee for customers despite of their lower prices. If any quality problems are found, no one will bear the responsibility for the products. What’s worse, they have a bad effect on the creative spirit of a nation.
As far as I’m concerned, we should see copycat products as they are and let them go on freely as long as they are worth the money. Besides, time given, they can build up a good image.。
