24th August 2015 Dear Sir,
I’m writing to complain about a recent trip I took with Suntours. I originally signed up for a two week trip to the island of Kefalonia, as advertised in Newsmonth magazine, and was looking forward to enjoying the holiday eagerly. Unfortunately, I felt that a number of things spoiled the vacation for me. Firstly, I was led to believe that all rooms in the hotel had a balcony with a view of the beach. However, my room not only did not have a balcony, but it faced away from the sea. Secondly, only one of the hotel’s pools was open, the othe r was still under construction, and the promised Jacuzzi was not there at all. The hotel’s restaurant was excellent, but it was closed two
nights a week, meaning that my family had to walk about two miles into the nearest town to eat, as there was no evening bus service. Finally, we took the tour to Turkey, but were left on the boat, as nobody reminded us to bring our passports along.
I feel very disappointed about the trip, and would appreciate some compensation(赔偿).
Yours truly,
Dave Clayman

Perseverance, the quality of never giving up when facing great challenges, lies behind every great achievement in anyone’s life. With perseverance a lame boy can learn to swim; with persistence a conquered country will win freedom.
Only with strong determination can people fight their way to final victories. Many a famous man has the same experience. They have obtained their status because they have had the will to overcome numerous difficulties. Outstanding athletes go all out to train themselves. Their willpower is beyond imagination. We all have read of great musicians, writers and inventors who have created or discovered breakthroughs recorded in history. Always they have said that they owe all their success to perseverance. As to students, quite a big number of them have been successful through perseverance. However, a certain group of them just stop half way and their previous efforts turn out to be fruitless.
The same is true of many rich businessmen. What we usually see are their achievements, but once we go behind the scenes we will find that they have put in a lot of continual steady efforts. Of all the countless examples the story of Colonel Saunders is perhaps one of the most outstanding.
The 65-year-old man from Kentucky had a dream to start a chain of fried chicken restaurants all over the world. To realize his dream, he knew that he needed a restaurant owner to go into partnership with him to open the first restaurant and to fry chicken according to the secret recipe (配方)he had. Colonel Saunders had knocked on 1008 doors before he finally found a proper person to co-operate with. It is doubtful whether many of us would have had the perseverance to knock even a hundred doors.
We can conclude that success comes to anyone who keeps working perseveringly while lack of perseverance can only result in frustration and failure.
24. Which of the following is true of perseverance?
A. Lame boys need it more.
B. It means never giving up.
C. Most students are lack of it.
D. It’s more important than effort.
25. What can be inferred from the third paragraph?
A. Saunders succeeded all by himself.
B. Saunders wouldn’t knock on 1008 door s.
C. Saunders owed his success to his secret recipe.
D. Saunders had failed many times before he succeeded.
26. Which is the key to success according to the passage?
A. Great imagination.
B. Numerous difficulties.
C. Continual steady efforts.
D. Previous hardworking.
27. How is the passage mainly developed?
A. By inferring and comparing.
B. By analyzing causes and effects.
C. By explanations and listing examples.
D. By following the natural time order.

Have you ever imagined sending mime(哑剧)artists to the street to fight illegal traffic? Venezuela’s capital city is giving its dangerous drivers the silent treatment. Mime artists are sent to do what the police alone have not: make the illegal traffic easy to control.
About 120 mime artists dressed like clowns put on white gloves. They shook their fingers at dangerous drivers, made faces or made other motions at badly behaved walkers who ran across busy roads rather than waiting at crossings. They do everything they can, of course, while silent.
They found plenty to keep them busy in a city where motorcycle riders drive down
pavements; buses drop passengers in the middle of busy streets and drivers treat red lights and speed limits as suggestions rather than orders.
“Most people are cooperative, but bad habits are usually hard to break and some drivers just don’t change their ways,” said Neidy Suarez, an 18-year-old mime artist. “Some people got angry and shouted at us when we warned them. But most people reacted pleasantly and some offered compliments(敬意).”
A former mayor of Bogota, Colombia, combined mime artists and stricter police enforcement (执法)in a program and that was widely seen as a success. Venezuela decided to copy Colombia. The streets of Venezuela’s capital city, Caracas, where too many drivers have little regard for the rules, though, may be even more chaotic than those of Colombia’s capital.
Alex Ojeda, president of a cultural organization that employed professional actors to train the mime artists, said he was confident they would help, although changing the behavior of motorists would be a long-term task. “The mime artists can achieve what traffic police cannot achieve using warnings and punishments i n their efforts to maintain control,” he said. “Mime artists, on the contrary, often achieve the same goals by employing artistic and peaceful actions.”
At a ceremony for newly trained mime artists, an official promised to keep up the effort “until the streets are full of creativity and education”.
28. When the mime artists help the police direct traffic, they ________.
A. always use body languages.
B. often shout at dangerous drivers.
C. usually help old walkers cross the road.
D. sometimes punish the motorists for their speeding.
29. The underlined word “chaotic” in paragraph 5 probably means ________.
A. competitive
B. disordered
C. dangerous
D. irregular
30. Why are mime artists sent to fight illegal traffic in Venezuela?
A. Because the citizens in Venezuela are badly behaved.
B. Because the police in Venezuela are stricter and ruder.
C. Because their way of directing traffic is accepted more easily.
D. Because they can take the place of the usual way of directing traffic.
31. Which of the following gives a general idea of the passage?
A. Venezuela is famous for illegal traffic.
B. Dangerous drivers get the silent treatment.
C. Traffic police should be fired sooner or later.
D. Bad habits ought to be changed in a new way.

Baltimore mother Toya Graham is being welcomed as a hero after physically removing her son from participating in the Baltimore riots (骚乱)at Mondawmin Mall earlier this week. Toya Graham has inspired “Mom Of The Year” on Twitter, and her dedication to keeping her children on the right path is applauded by many.
Toya Graham, however, does not feel like a hero. She simply feels like a mom who loves her son and fears he could end up as another thug(暴徒)on the streets. Graham plans to make sure that doesn’t happen.
“I don’t feel like a hero. My intention was to get my son and have him be safe. I knew the whole thing was not safe…. That’s my only son and at the end of the day, I don’t want him to be another Freddie Gray. I can’t imagine what Freddie Gray’s mother is going through. I don’t want to lose my son to the streets.”
The upstanding mother of six works takes care of her family, and goes to church. In fact, Toya Graham was worried about what her pastor would think of the action she took to ensure that her son was not part of the violent activities in Baltimore this week, reports the Daily Mail. It seems Toya Graham has nothing to worry about on that front, however, as Pastor Jamal Bryant fully approves of the action Graham took to ensure her son’s safety, calling her “Mom of the Century.”
Though Toya Graham understands the frustration of the Baltimore community regarding the Freddie Gray case, she does not believe that violence is the answer. The what, the how and the why of Gray’s fatal fight with Baltimore police remained a mystery more than two weeks after the event, however, it became clear the train was pulling a lot of baggage cars behind it.
“I started focusing on these bricks being thrown at police officers, and I turned around, and I saw Michael. I was so angry with him that he had made a decision to do some harm to police officers... You will not be throwing rocks and stones at police officers. Who’s to say they don’t have to come and protect me from something?”
32. What happened at Mondawmin Mall of Baltimore?
A. Mother Toya stopped a riot happening.
B. There was violence against the police.
C. People stopped police catching Freddie Gray.
D. Toya’s son was beaten by the police on the street.
33. We can infer from the passage that Freddie Gray _______.
A. was killed by the police
B. killed the police on the street
C. took part in the riots in Baltimore
D. encouraged Michael to join in the riots
34. By “Who’s to say…from something”, Toya means that ________.
A. the police don’t help her
B. she doesn’t need any help
C. she herself was then in danger
D. the police were then in danger
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. A Son Saved in Time.
B. A Man Killed on the Street.
C. A Mother Praised as a Hero.
D. A Riot Stopped by the Police.

How to stimulate children’s interest in learning?
There is an old saying that interest is the best teacher. So, how to develop children’s interest in learning? Experts give us the following suggestions.
Use color
Send your child on a treasure hunt for blue, red, green items. Not only will it help their color recognition, but it will also help develop their ability to investigate. For a more sensory experience, dye rice or pasta (生面团)with food coloring and place in containers. 36 .
Create reading games
To reinforce literacy, go through your preschooler’s favorite book and find all the places where the author has used the Letter of the Day or Word of the Week that you have chosen. Meanwhile, you can keep a list of all the words you find with definitions and make this into a reference book that your child can use moving forward.
37
Working with measurements is a great way for children of every age. Instead of just waiting
for the finished product (a yummy cake, perhaps!), your child will understand all the work required to create their favorite dishes.
Bring books to life
Acting out a scene from your child’s favorite masterwork helps pr omote reading comprehension. 38 . For example, after reading Dr. Seuss’s Green Eggs and Ham, go into the kitchen and make green eggs and ham.
Use nature
39 If you’re vacationing on the beach, have your child practice writing letters in the sand. After a big snowstorm, help your child make snowballs and then count them before starting a snowball fight.
Give them a handful
Sensory lessons can be used to teach children about textures and temperatures, including soft versus hard and cool versus hot. 40 . Place water, salt and flour into an extra-large food storage box and let your child mix it with their hands. It’s messy but fun!
A. Make cooking fun
B. Assign art projects
C. Your little one will love picking out the rainbow colors
D. You can also choose an activity from a book to do together
E. Touching different objects definitely stimulates brain activity
F. Just because you’re on the go doesn’t mean learning should stop
G. Another cool task is to have your child cut out the letters of his or her name from magazines

Dear editor,
I’ve learnt that city parks offer free admission nowadays. People have the opportunity to go outside and relax free of charge. Meanwhile, fresh air and landscapes in parks are good for our
health.
However, too many people flocking into parks might not be so good for the parks. For example, some visitors leave their garbage behind, which may cause environmental pollution. And people’s barbeques will also bring damage to the grassland in parks.
As a student, I’m in favor of free admission to parks. It makes people like the poor and students go to parks frequently as well. On the other hand, visitors should be informed to protect the environment while enjoying the beauty of nature.
Yours,
Li Hua。
