文章主要讲述了一个小男孩在自己家里经营食物银行以帮助他人的故事。
13. A boy won people’s hearts after he came up with a heartwarming use for his birthday money: launching a food bank service from his garden shed (棚屋). Isaac Winfield, who was born with a rare chromosome (染色体) disorder, started the initiative in 2020 after learning that his new school didn’t accept food donations.
The boy’s mother, Claire, said, “We’d always donated to food banks and during the pandemic he would take food parcels into school which would be given to people in need. When Isaac moved from a mainstream school to a specialist school, he was left confused as to what he was going to do with his food parcels.”
“Being determined, Isaac said, ‘It’s alright; I’ll give them food at my house.’” the 42-year-old continued. “So I doubled the money I gave him normally for food parcels and he went off to Aldi. With a little bit of help, he put all the food he bought in a little greenhouse with some lights and started offering it from there. Someone spotted it and put it on one of those Facebook community sites, and then people came with donations. The greenhouse lasted four weeks before he had to get a shed because we ran out of room.”
“In 2021, we were funded a bigger shed. Isaac ran his little shed and his big shed on the big driveway,” she added. Today, well-wishers can donate food or ask for supplies by contacting Isaac via his Friend’s of Isaac Food Bank Facebook page. The boy fills bags of groceries that have been donated and hands them out to the needy around his hometown. Those in need can also directly visit his food bank sheds and help themselves to whatever they require.
This year, Isaac asked his family and friends to make food bank donations instead of buying him gifts for his 11th birthday. “Isaac has always been kind-hearted,” said Claire. “I think he has been doing something great by helping others. He can’t read or write but he can fundraise.”

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道,vax被《牛津英语词典》选为英国年度单词,文章讲述了原因及vax的来源。
15. After analyzing 14.5 billion words used in daily news coverage in 2021, The Oxford English Dictionary has chosen “vax” as the Word of the Year.
Oxford Languages, the publisher of the dictionary, reported that “V ax”, the shortened term for “vaccine”, has injected itself into the bloodstream of the English language, and is a catchy and punchy word for 2021.
A contributing factor to its rise in 2021— aside from its obvious relation to the COVID vaccine drive— is its adaptability, according to Fiona McPherson, a senior editor of The Oxford English Dictionary. It can mean either vaccine or vaccination as a noun and vaccinate as a verb, and it is the root of many other phrases such as “vax cards”, “vax passports”, and “getting vaxxied”. The word has also been changed into other inventive words like vaxxie, a selfie taken during or immediately before or after one’s vaccination. “It has made the most striking impact,” said Fiona MePherson.
V ax and vaxx are both accepted spellings, but the form with one x is more common. It was first recorded in English in 1799, while its derivatives (衍生词) “vaccinate” and “vaccination” both first appeared in 1800. All of these words ultimately came from the Latin word “vacca”, which means “cow”. According to The Oxford English Dictionary, this is due to English physician and scientist Edward Jenner’s pioneering work on vaccination against smallpox in the late 1790s and early 1800s.
“The word’s highest frequency in usage caught our attention first. Then we ran the analysis and a story started to emerge, revealing how ‘vax’sat at the centre of our preoccupations this year,” Casper Grathwohl, the president of Oxford Languages, said in an interview. “No word better captures the atmosphere of the year than ‘vax’”
1. Which of the following best describes the word vax?
A.Fixed.B.Complex.C.Adaptable.D.Boring.
2. What is the origin of the word vax?
A.Edward Jenner’s pioneering work.B.The Latin word vacca.
C.The Latin word cow.D.The Oxford English Dictionary.
3. Why is vax chosen as the Word of the Year?
A.It is from The Oxford English Dictionary.
B.It is accepted by Oxford Languages.
C.It appears most frequently in news.
D.It is reporters’ favorite word.
4. What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Choosing vax as the Word of 2021.
B.Making vax changeable.
C.Researching the origin of vax.
D.Analyzing vax in The Oxford English Dictionary.

16. It is estimated that 95 percent of the ocean’s depths remain unexplored, partly due to limitations in technology. But now, MIT researchers
have developed a battery-free, wireless underwater camera that is about 100,000 times more energy-efficient than other undersea cameras. The device takes color photos, even in dark underwater environments, and transmits (传送) image data wirelessly through the water.
The sea is noisy. The autonomous camera transforms mechanical energy from sound waves travelling through water into electrical energy. The camera can also store energy, should it build up enough power for its imaging work. As well as taking photographs, the camera uses sound waves to send the image data it collects to a receiver that reconstructs the data into the appropriate image.
Because it doesn’t need a power source, the camera could run for weeks on end before someone has to pick it up, enabling scientists to search remote parts of the ocean for new species. It could also be used to take images of ocean pollution or monitor the health and growth of fish raised in the fisheries. “The most exciting application of this camera for me personally is in the context of climate monitoring. We are building climate models, but we are missing data from over 95 percent of the ocean. This technology could help us build more accurate climate models and better understand how climate change impacts the underwater world,” says associate professor Fadel Adib.
The researchers successfully tested the camera in several underwater environments. However, the new camera can only transmit data 40 meters from the receiver and the amount of memory makes it limited for long-term use. They plan to enhance the device so it is practical for feeding real-time images and even recording full-motion underwater videos in more underwater settings.
1. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.How the camera works.B.What the camera consists of.
C.Where the image data is collected.D.How the electrical energy is produced.
2. What potential use for the camera interests Fadel Adib most?
A.Making accurate maps of the ocean floor.
B.Searching for new species in the remote oceans.
C.Monitoring the growth and health of the farmed fishes.
D.Tracking the effects of climate change on the undersea world.
3. What could the further development of the device focus on?
A.The reduction of its building cost.
B.The extension of the receiver’s life.
C.The improvement of the imaging quality.
D.The expansion of its memory and wireless range.
4. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A major breakthrough in sound technology
B.A tough challenge of building climate models
C.Scientists create battery-free underwater cameras
D.Researchers can explore unknown areas of the ocean

文章介绍了在决定是否去国外读商科课程时,如何做成本效益分析。
17. Earning an MBA Abroad
Anyone who hopes to lead a Fortune 500 Firm someday should realize that a high-profile leadership role will probably require extensive travel and teamwork with colleagues from all over the world. Any ambitious businessperson may wish to consider attending a business school (B-school) where he or she is neither a citizen nor a permanent resident. When deciding whether to go to a business graduate program in a foreign country, do a cost-benefit analysis. 1
Selling Points and Disadvantages
Earning an MBA or another type of graduate business degree in a foreign country bears valuable advantages. One big advantage is that you will be able to learn about new cultures. 2 It also allows you to experience different working styles and how certain companies operate, which can be beneficial for future employers who want employees with global experience.
3 International flights to and from a foreign school may be expensive. You may find it harder than they expected to get visas (签证) or work
permits for your schooling abroad, which means you might have to leave the country abruptly when you graduate without much time for transmission.
You may also be concerned about cultural differences in learning styles, study habits, and academic strictness.
Other Factors to Consider
When comparing MBA programs in different countries, keep several regional distinctions in mind. The standard in some countries is for MBA degrees to be completed within a single year. 4 The price of B-school in some areas tends to be more expensive and starting salaries among recent MBA graduates tend to be especially high within certain countries.
No matter where in the world you’d prefer to pursue an MBA, it’s wise to investigate your target B-school’s course offerings to assess whether the lessons taught at that school seem interesting and relevant to you. 5 In other words, think over the location where you intend to spend the majority of your career.
A.This will help in future work opportunities.
B.Another consideration is your final destination.
C.In other places the typical time-to-degree is two years.
D.Admission odds may vary depending on the location of the programs.
E.Unfortunately, there are some downsides to pursuing an MBA overseas.
F.How employers recognize the values of an MBA influences job opportunities.
G.Here is an outline of the pluses and minuses associated with going abroad for B-school.
