Students arc increasingly using laptops for note-
taking because of speed and legibility(清晰
度).But the research has found laptop users are less able to re member and apply the concepts they have been taught. Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whet her using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes "mindl essly" by taking down word for word what the professors said
In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or p en and paper .They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual note-
taking skills. Thirty minutes after the talk, they were examined o n their ability to remember facts and on how well they understo od concepts.
The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many not es as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts.
The researchers' report said, "While more notes are beneficial, i
f the notes are taken mindlessly, as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears."
In another experiment aimed at testing long-
term memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam.
These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that t hey also lead to superior revision in the future.

Develop Better Relationships with Neighbors
Good neighbors are a lot like electricity or running water:
we don’t know how much we depend on them until we don’t hav e them. They make our lives more pleasant and give us a sens e of who we are, both as an individual and as a member of the community. Here’s how to develop your relationships with these very important people in your life.
16. _________ Often neighbors don’t even know each other’s na mes. But it’s okay to be the one to break the ice , even if you’ve lived next door for years. Most neighbors enjoy making small ta lk with the folks on the other side of the fence. So as you see th
em at work in their yards, smile, wave, and say hello. Ask how t heir kids are (whether they’re babies or in college), whether the y could use an extra cucumber from your garden, or what they t hink of the price at the local supermarket.
17. _________ These days, the old Welcome Wagon is a thing o
f the past. But your new neighbors may be feelin
g lonely and un sure, especially if they’re far from home, and might appreciate a friendly face bearing fresh-
baked chocolate cakes. If they have kids, tell them where the c hildren in the neighborhood live. Recommend the best places to eat and sleep. Invite them over for coffee or tea when they get settled, give them your number, and point to your house as you say good-bye.
18. __________ Return anything that you borrow from a neighbo r, such as tools, in good repair and as soon as you’re finished w ith them. Replace anything that belongs to your neighbor that y ou, your children, or your pets break or soil. Make sure that you r car is not blocking their doorway. Such random acts of consid eration will have your neighbors talking — and the talk will be g ood.
19. __________ If you value a friendship with your neighbors, sp end time with them. What better way to meet your neighbors th an to invite them to an informal barbecue, pool party, or holiday
open house? Better yet, you might even consider throwing a ge t-
together in their honor. Deliver the invitations in person to every one who lives on your street and chat with each for five minutes before moving on to the next house. This way, you will get an i dea of what your neighbors are like so that you can plan for app ropriate food and music.
20. ___________ In a good relationship, it’s really the little things that count. Help to bring in the mail for the elderly neighbor wh en there is a heavy rain. When your neighbor forgets to take in his rubbish cans, roll them back into his yard. If you’re truly con cerned, you’ll know when your neighbor needs some cheering u p — a bunch of flowers or a helping hand when it’s needed. All i t takes to develop your relationship with neighbors is the respec t for their feelings.
A. Be a good listener.
B. Care about the details.
C. Strike up a conversation.
D. Make time for friendships.
E. Reach out to the newcomers.
F. Avoid causing inconveniences
G. Good relationships with neighbors are important.
