宿州市最新高考英语阅读理解练习题 (及答案 )
一、高中英语阅读理解
1.阅读理解
Most of us have looked up at the stars that fill the night sky and wondered whether we're alone in the universe. Indeed, the question of whether there's life out there has been something humankind's been asking itself for countless years. But thanks to China's Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST), the answer to this question may come a lot sooner than we expected.
The telescope has a huge round reflector, which measures 500 meters across and has a perimeter( 周长 )of 1.6 kilometers. Because of its great size, it would have been both difficult and inefficient to get FAST to move like a regular telescope. Instead, FAST's designers came up with a great solution: its surface is made up of 4450 panels which can be individually adjusted. This clever design feature allows scientists to detect radio signals from any angle with a great degree
of accuracy. "Panels can change their positions through connected wires and parallel (关联的 ) robots. We can control their position with an accuracy of 1mm," Zheng Yuanpeng, chief engineer
of the telescope's panel project, told Xinhua News Agency.
FAST's engineers also had the task of finding a suitable location. As any interference would affect its ability to detect distant radio waves, it needed to be built in a remote area. Luckily, the perfect spot was found in the beautiful mountains of Guizhou Province. "There are three hills about 500 meters away from one another, creating a valley that is perfect to support the telescope," Sun Caihong, chief engineer of FAST's construction, told Xinhua.
And although it wasn't yet fully operated, FAST had already made great discoveries by October 2017. Since 1967, only around 2000 pulsars (脉冲星 ) have been discovered, yet FAST had detected six more by October 2017. Once FAST is fully up and running, we may finally have the answer to one of the biggest questions in history.
(1) What is the purpose of mentioning the question in Paragraph 1?
(2) What can we know from Paragraph 2?
(3) Why was FAST built in Guizhou?
A. Because Guizhou is a remote province.
B. Because Guizhou has an ideal valley.
C. Because Guizhou has beautiful mountains.
D. Because Guizhou has the ability to build it.
(4) What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. FAST's timeline.
B. FAST's future.
C. FAST's operation.
D. FAST's discoveries.
【答案】( 1) A
(2) D
(3) B

Devon Gallagher, a college graduate from Philadelphia, wants the world to know exactly where she's been while she's on her worldwide vacation in a special way. The traveler, who was born
with a bone disease, had her right leg amputated (截肢 ) at the age of four. Although the amputation caused inconvenience for Gallagher early on, she now sees it as nothing short of inspiration for living her best life.
To spread that message. Gallagher has gone to social media, where she shares photos of her travels across the world, but instead of simply using a geo-tag ( 地理位置标签 ), she writes her location on her artificial leg before taking a picture.
Now she has been taking pictures across the Continent, which show her cycling over the canal
in Amsterdam relaxing on a wall overlooking the city of Barcelona, posing with a waffle in Brussels, taking in the beautiful Parthenon temple in Athens and enjoying a river ride in Budapest, all with the well-known locations written on her artificial leg.
"I get a new leg every two years and I can choose the design on it. One day I had a sudden thought to get a chalk-board," Gallagher said. "My mum and grandmother didn't like the idea,
but my friends thought it was great and told me to go for it, so I did."
Gallagher said people often stare when she's writing on her leg, but once she shares the photos, she receives only positive feedback (反馈 ), "My leg hasn't stopped me from doing anything I've wanted to do," she said. "I don't know if it's my determination to prove to myself
that I can do it, anyway, I've been able to keep up with people at my age and lead a pretty
great life."
Gallagher shows us that you should never let anything stand in the way of your dreams. And
if life gives you an artificial leg, make art.

4.阅读理解
If conditions get bad enough, almost any kind of weather can become a storm.
Stormy weather can cause people to cancel their plans. It can cause major events to be
postponed. And severe stormy weather can be dangerous to people, fortune and anima1.
If you weather the storm, or ride out the storm, you survive and move on without harm or
injury. For example, 1et's talk about Tornado Alley, the name for part of the central United States.
During springtime, this area often has a large number of powerful tornadoes. People who live
there are taught to shelter in the safest place they can find and wait for the storm to pass. People
who live in Tornado Alley are used to weathering many storms!
You can also weather a storm, but it doesn't involve actual weather. “ To weather the storm can also mean to make it through a difficult experience or trying times. So, if the stock market( 股
市)crashes, you might have to weather a financial storm.
Often before a big storm, conditions are calm. The calm before the storm can happen anytime.
It is the time before something bad happens. For example, at the beginning of a family reunion,
the adults were all talking happily. But the older children knew it was just the calm before the storm. They've seen it happen before. The adults talk happily for about an hour. Then they start arguing about events from the past —things that should really stay buried!
But after the storm begins and you find yourself in the middle of it, you are in the eye of the storm. In the world of weather, the eye of the storm is the calmest part, in the center of a hurricane, for example. However, in the English language, if you are in the eye of the storm, you are in the most intense part of a conflict. For example, she had no idea that walking into the meeting would put her in the eye of the storm.
However, a brainstorm does not exist in the world of weather. To brainstorm means to try to solve a problem by talking with other people. And don't worry. If we have trouble thinking of
an idea for the next program, we can always brainstorm with you!
(1) What's mainly discussed in the 3rd and 4th paragraphs?
(2) Why does the author mention a family reunion in the fifth paragraph?
(3) What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
(4) What's the author's purpose in writing the text?
A. To tell us stormy weather can cause destruction.
B. To tell us some expressions about storm.
C. To tell us a storm can cause conflicts.
D. To tell us we should be ready for a storm.
【答案】( 1) A
(2) C
(3) C

5.阅读理解
At the age of seven, while his friends were spending pocket money on things like candy and toys, Jose Adolfo was busy saving money for more essential purchases. To try to get his peers to do the same, the youngster from Arequipa, Peru came up with the innovative idea of an eco-bank, which allows kids of all ages to gain economic independence — while also helping the environment. Established in 2012, the Bartselana Student Bank is the world's first bank for kids. To open an account, kids have to bring in at least 5 kilograms of solid waste (paper or plastic) and establish a savings goal. Once accepted, all bank "partners" are required to deposit( 存储 ) at least one additional kilogram of recyclables on a monthly basis and meet other requirements, such as attending financial education and environmental management workshops.
The waste collected is sold to local recycling companies, who, thanks to Jose, pay a higher-than-market rate for everything brought in by Bartselana Student Bank members. The funds received
are placed in the individual's account until his/her savings goal is reached. The account holder can then withdraw his/her money, or choose to leave it and continue to grow for a bigger target.
"At the beginning, my teachers thought I was crazy," Jose recalls. "They did not understand that we are not the future of the country but its present. Luckily. I had the support of the school principal." By 2013, the bank had over 200 members who brought in one ton of recyclable waste. Today, the eco-bank, which now has the support of several local institutions, has ten educational centers. They are designed to teach the over 3,000 members both finance and environmental management. On December 6, 2018, in response to the growing demand, Bartselana Student Bank began accepting applications from kids all across Peru.
As the teenager says, "Together we can change the world. We just need an opportunity."
(1) What is the purpose of the eco-bank?
(2) What duty does an eco-bank member have to perform?
A. Attending financial education workshops.
B. Bringing in 5 kilos of waste.
C. Saving one kilo of solid waste weekly.
D. Establishing a savings goal.
(3) What does the underlined part in Paragraph 4 mean?
(4) Which of the following words can best describe Jose?
A. Generous.
B. Crazy.
C. Flexible.
D. Influential. 【答案】( 1) D
(2) A
(3) C

Your teenage best friend could be good for your long-term mental health, according to a new study published in the journal Child Development According to the findings, teenagers aged 15 to
16 who had a close friendship rather than a larger group of friends they were less close to had a greater sense of self-worth by the time they were 25 years old. Those people with a very close
best friend were also less likely to experience depression and social anxiety, the study found. "Close friendship strength in mid-adolescence predicted relative increases in self-worth and
decreases in anxiety and depressive symptoms by early adulthood, "the authors, led by Rachel K, Narr, a postdoctoral student focused on clinical psychology at the University of Virginia, wrote.
A past research has suggested that adolescent friendships are important. Friendships during the teenage years predict academic success and improved mental health. But the new research
further explores the type of friendships teenagers have. "My hunch( 预感 )was that close friendships compared to broader friendship groups and popularity may not function the same way," Narr told Quartz. "Being successful in one is not the same as being successful in the other."
Many study participants did not continue to have a close relationship with their high-school
best friend, leading the researchers to wonder what exactly was responsible for the mental health benefits. They suspected that the skills and ability to build such a friendship may be more important than the friendship itself.
And as the researchers point out, those skills are not necessarily brought to bear in the world of social media. "As technology makes it increasingly easy to build a social network of shallow friends, focusing time and attention on developing close connections with a few individuals should be a priority," study co-author Joseph Allen said in a statement.
(1) What is the benefit of having a close teenage friendship?
A. Excellent performance in high school.
B. A larger group of friends.
C. Mental health by early adulthood.
D. A large social network in the future.

(3) What did the researchers think might lead to the mental health benefits?
A. Not continuing to have a close relationship.
B. Having a best friend in high school.
C. Understanding the world of social media.
D. Knowing how to build a close friendship
(4) What did the researcher Joseph suggest?
A. Learning to use social media.
C. Improving the skills of making friends. 【答案】( 1) C
(2) A
(3) D
(4) D B. Broadening your social circle.
D. Concentrating on high-quality relationship.

7.阅读理解
The term "smiling depression" —appearing happy to others while actually suffering depressive
symptoms —has become increasingly popular. In fact, many people who experience a low mood
and a loss of pleasure in activities manage to hide their condition in this way. And these people
might be particularly easy to suicide.
While smiling depression is not a technical term that psychologists use, it is certain to be
depressed and manage to successfully mask the symptoms. The closest technical term for this
condition is "atypical depression: It can be very hard to spot people suffering depression because
they may seem like they don't have a reason to be sad — they have a job, an apartment and maybe
even children or a partner. They smile when you greet them and can carry pleasant
conversations. In short, they often put on a mask to the outside world while leading seemingly normal and active lives. Inside, however, they often feel hopeless and down, sometimes even having thoughts about ending it all.
People with smiling depression put on a happy face to the outside world, but they can experience a lift in their mood as a result of positive occurrences in their lives. Other symptoms
of this condition include overeating, feeling a sense of heaviness in the arms and legs and being easily hurt by criticism or rejection. They are also more likely to feel depressed in the evening
and feel the need to sleep longer than usual. With other forms of depression, however, your
mood might be worse in the morning and you might feel the need for less sleep than you are normally used to.
So how can they break this circle? A starting point needs to be known that this condition actually exists and that it's serious. Only when we stop ignoring our problems because we think they're not serious enough can we start making an actual difference. Then we can find purpose
by taking the attention away from ourselves and placing it onto something else. Feeling that our lives matter is finally what gives us purpose and meaning — and this can make a significant difference for our mental health and well-being.
(1) What do we know about people suffering smiling depression?
A. They are wearing masks all day.
B. They are difficult to get along with.
C. They lead an abnormal life actually.
D. Most of them commit suicide.
(2) What does the underlined word "atypical" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. representative
B. common
C. hidden
D. formal
(3) Compared with smiling depression, people suffering other depressions.
A.may feel sleepless
B.feel more depressed in the evening
C.are tired of heaviness in the arms
D.may eat more food
(4) What can we do to overcome smiling depression?
A.Never talk about smiling depression and ignore its existence.
B.Admit the condition and pay attention to ourselves.
C.Value the importance of our life and enjoy it.
D.Find out the problem and place it onto somebody else.
【答案】( 1) C
(2) C
(3) A
(4) C

Recently, as the British doctor Robert Winston took a train from London to Manchester, he found himself becoming steadily angry. A woman had picked up her phone and begun a loud conversation, which would last an unbelievable hour. Furious, Winston began to tweet about the woman. He took her picture and sent it to his more than 40,000 followers.
When the train arrived at its destination, Winston rushed out. He'd had enough of the woman's rudeness. But the press were now waiting for her on the platform. And when they showed her Winston's messages, she used just one word to describe Winston's actions: rude.
Winston's tale is something of a microcosm( 缩影 ) of our age of increasing rudeness, fueled by social media. What can we do to fix this?
Studies have shown that rudeness spreads quickly, almost like the common cold. Just witnessing rudeness makes it far more likely that we, in turn, will be rude later on. The only way
to avoid it is to deal with it face to face. We must say, "Just stop." For Winston, that would have meant approaching the woman, telling her that her conversation was frustrating other passengers and politely asking her to speak more quietly or make the call at another time.
The rage and injustice we feel at the rude behavior of a stranger can drive us to do odd things.
In my own research, surveying 2,000 adults, I discovered that the acts of revenge people had taken ranged from the ridiculous to the disturbing. Winston did shine a spotlight on the woman's behavior — but from afar, in a way that shamed her.
We must instead combat rudeness head on. When we see it occur in a store, we must step
up and say something. If it happens to a colleague, we must point it out. We must defend strangers in the same way we'd defend our best friends. But we can do it with grace, by handling
it without a trace of aggression and without being rude ourselves. Because once rude people can see their actions through the eyes of others, they are far more likely to end that strain themselves. As this tide of rudeness rises, civilization needs civility.
