Many people go to school for an education. They learn languages, history, geography, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Others go to school to learn a skill so that they can make a living. School education is very important and useful. Yet no one can learn everything from school. A teacher, no matter how much he knows, can not teach his students everything they want to know. The teacher’s job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So, much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves.
It is always more important to know how to study oneself than to memorize some facts or a formula(公式). It is actually quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in
mathematics. But it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a math problem. Great scientists, such as Einstein, Newton and Galileo didn’t get everything from school. But they were all so successful. They invented so many things for mankind. The reason for their success is that they knew how to study. They read books that were not taught at school. They worked hard all their lives, wasting not a single moment. They would ask any questions as they read and they did thousands of experiments. Above all, they knew how to use their brains(动脑筋).

The two largest islands of the British Isles (岛) are Great Britain and Ireland (爱尔兰). There are three parts in Great Britain. They are England, Scotland and Wales. Scotland lies to the north of England, and Wales to the southwest. Ireland lies to the west of Great Britain. It is a smaller island than Great Britain.
The mountains in Great Britain are almost all in the north and the west. They are not very high; the highest ones are in Scotland. There are many low hills in some parts of the country, but not in the south and east, where there are almost no hills. In summer there is no snow on any of the mountains or hills in Great Britain or Ireland.
There are many rivers in Great Britain, but they are not very long. The rivers which run to the east are longer than the ones which run to the west. The Thames (泰晤士河) is one of the longest rivers in England. It is a very beautiful river. It is in the south of the country and runs to the east, into the North Sea. London, the capital of Great Britain, is on the Thames.
London is a very old city. Today it is one of the largest cities in Europe. More than nine million people live there. The port(港口)of London is one of the greatest ports in the world. (每空一词,多词不给分;每词一分,共10分) Increasingly New Yorkers are placing and receiving calls when they go to the movies. But now if a new law does become effective soon, the very act of talking into a mobile phone in a cinema or any other place of public performance could become illegal (不合法的) and result in a fine. The proposed law has strong support from cinema goers. More and more people find the use of mobile phones in cinemas quite annoying. If someone uses a mobile phone in a movie theatre, the people sitting around will always end up missing parts of the film. As a result, mobile phone users in cinemas often draw loud and angry protests. Many people in the show business support the proposed law which would bring to an end the use of mobile phones in live theatres and concert halls. Mobile phone companies are not too happy. They believe it would not be polite to stop people from using mobile phones. Such act would invade an area of common sense. Moreover, they claim that the problem is that the ban (禁令) will be difficult to apply because it will be hard to catch mobile phone users. The law-makers of the city, however, are determined; they want to change anti-social behavior and send a message to the public. “You just need to turn the mobile off, put it in your pocket and enjoy the show,” they said. In 2001,New York became the first state to outlaw use of mobile phones by driver. 1.________ 2. ________ 3. _________ 4. __________ 5. __________ 6. __________
