If you need to spend time on the road, it's important to find wa ys to keep safe on your feet . Don't suppose it's your right of way. Yes, you might be crossing at
the right place, at the right time, within the crosswalk area, but you are still exposed to danger. It could be a distracted driver , or a cyclist with a loose sense of traffic rules , so you could s till get hurt. You can be in the right legally, but that won't be m uch help when you're in the hospital.
Follow pedestrian(行
人) signals. Just as drivers aren't supposed to speed up to be at a light when crossing through an intersection, pedestrians n
eed to take the same care when obeying their own signals. If t he hand is flashing and the countdown is into single digits (数字), stay where you are.
Trying to outrun the flashing hand is unsafe, especially as car s try to clear the intersection before the light turns red.
Give drivers enough time to stop when crossing. Don't suppos e that drivers will jam on their brakes when you hit the cr osswalk signals. Some provinces, such as Alberta, issue (发出)a ticket if you don't give drivers enough time to brake. Cross quickly. Once you've followed all of the other rules, and it is safe to cross the street, don't then just wander along in fr ont of six lanes (车

In high school I was very shy, content to hang around with my small group of friends and to concentrate on my courses. I w as quickly labeled a "brain." I did so well that by the end of se nior year I had perfect grades and enough college credits to gi ve up an entire quarter of coursework.
But in early June of senior year, the principal called me into hi s office. He asked me to give a speech at graduation. I was s urprised to look at him, my heart thumping. This was the rewa rd for my hard work? I murmured something and fled the offic e, blaming myself for staying away from physics, a subject sur e to have broken up my perfect record.
I finally agreed to a compromise. I would share the honor with five other students. I agreed to introduce my friend Judy, who would then give her own, full-length speech.
Graduation day soon arrived, I’d been practicing my speech f or days, and I had it memorized. The first half hour of the cere mony passed in a blur, and then my moment came. My name was announced. I managed to reach the stage without falling down. I faced my classmates. My voice trembled a little, but m ostly it was clear and strong. But within seconds, I was done a nd heading back to my seat. I accomplished something I’d ne ver dreamed of — I spoke in front of hundreds of people. Although I didn’t realize it at the time, the successful completi on of that speech gave me the confidence to take part in class at college, to give oral reports, and to eventually break free of my shyness. I never would have chosen to give a speech at graduation — or ever. But I’m glad I did. I no longer hesitate w hen I’m faced with the prospect of doing something I feared. I
know it may very well turn out to be one of my shining momen ts.

B. She won enough college credits.
C. She got rid of her sense of shyness.

D
It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men woul d become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver’s seat is anothe r matter altogether.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense to o. It takes the most cool-
headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat ba ck when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility o f quarrelling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and calm so necessary in modern traffic conditio n. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognize po liteness when they see it.
However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typic al examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the str eet at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may be not able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging ol
d ladies to cross th
e road wherever and whenever they want t o. It always amazes me that the highways are not covered wit h the dead bodies o
f these grannies (奶奶).
An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me i t would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream w ithout causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feeli ngs. Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive. Y ears ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car o wnership would demand more give-and-
take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.
32. According to the passage, troubles on the road are often c aused by .
A. road conditions
B. the speed of modern life
C. the large number of cars
D. the behavior of the drivers
33.In the writer’s opinion, .
A. drivers should show road politeness properly.
B. strict traffic rules are badly needed
C. unskillful drivers should be punished
D. drivers should av oid traffic jams
34. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Road Politeness
B. Traffic Problems
C. Bad Manners on the Road
D. Good Drivers and Bad Driv er
35. According to the writer, a good driver should_______.
A. beat back when forced to face rude driving
B. encourage old ladies to cross the roads whenever they wa nt to.
C. be able to recognize politeness when he sees it
D. join in traffic stream quickly however other people feel
