One day in 1965,when I was a librarian at View Ridge School in Seattle,a fourth grade teacher came to me. She had a student who finished his work before all the others and needed a challenge. “Could he help in the library?”she asked. I said. “Send him along. ”
Soon a slight, sandy—haired boy in jeans and T—shirt appeared. I told him about the Dewey Decimal System for shelving books. He picked up the idea immediately. Then I showed him a pile of cards for long—over due books that had actually been returned but were miss shelved with the wrong cards in them. He said,“Is it a kind of detective job?”I answered yes,and he became a continuous detective.
He had found three books with wrong cards by the time his teacher opened the door andannounced,“Time for rest!”He argued for finishing the finding job;He won.
The next morning,he arrived early and finished the books. At the end of the day, when he asked to be a regular librarian,it was easy to say yes. He worked untiringly.
After a few weeks I found a note on my desk, inviting me to dinner at the boy’s home. At the end of a pleasant evening, his mother announced that the family would be moving to a neighbor school district. Her son’s first concern, she said, was leaving the View Ridge Library. “Who will find the lost books?”he asked.
When the time came. I said an unwilling good—bye. Though at first he had seemed an ordi—nary kid,his zeal(热情)had made him different.
I missed him,not for long. A few days later he came in the door and joyfully announced,“The librarian over there doesn’t let boys work i n the library. My mother got me to come back to View Ridge. My dad will drop me off on his way to work. And if can’t,I’ll walk!’’
I should have an idea that such focused deter monition would take that young man wherever he wanted to go. What I could not have guessed, however, was that he became a wizard(奇才)of the Information Age:Bill Gates, tycoon(巨头) of Microsoft and America's richest man.

Have you thought about what determines the way we are as we grow up? Remember the TV pro-gram Seven Up?It started following the lives of a group of children in 1963. We first meet them as wide—eyed seven一year—olds and then catch up with them at seven—year intervals(间隔):nervous l4一year—olds,serious 21一year—olds,then grown—ups.
Some of the stories are inspiring, others sad,but what is interesting in almost all the cases the way in which the children’s early hopes and dreams are shown in their future lives. for exam—ple,at seven. Tony is a lively child who says he wants to become a sportsman or a taxi driver. When he grows up,he goes to do both. How about Nicki, who says,“I’d like to find out about the moon. ”and goes on to become a space scientist? As a child, soft—spoken Bruce says he wants to help“poor children”and ends up teaching in India.
But if the lives of all the children had followed this pattern. the program would be far less in—teresting than it actually was. It was the children whose childhood did not prepare them for what was to come that made the program so interesting. Where did their ideas come from about what they wanted to do when they grow up? Are children influenced by what their parents do,by what they, see on television,or by what their teachers say? How great is the effect of a single event? Many film directors, including Stephen Spielberg, say that an early visit to the cinema was the turning point in their lives. Dr Margaret McAllister, who has done a lot of research in this area, thinks that the major influences are parents, friends, and the wider society.

A Dac hshund’s Wish
It’s about a dog named Paws who wishes to be a boy when he gets a new family. But as soon as he meets the Great Mae,Paws realizes that just being himself is the greatest gift of all.
I’ve wished to be something else sometimes. Even though there are great things about being a boy, sometimes I wish I were a super hero so I would have powers.
Kids should read this because even if you have ever wished to be something else. You’ll see being yourself is greater.
Once Upon 1001 Stories
The silly thing about this book is that each story goes around and around in circles. I just read the story about that frog and princess and then it just went right back to the story I read before about sleeping Beauty and the creature sleeping in the flowers. That’s a kind of an in—the—middle thing, half good and half bad. Sometimes people like moving onto different stories, and sometimes they like being in the same place. Too many of the stories go back to the same page. You don't get to pick how you want it to end like it promised.
I think the author was trying to make it more interesting, but it didn’t make that much sense,Kali and the Rat Snake This book teaches that you can make friends with the people who don’t like you or even if you have eve r been teased(戏弄)by them. Things will turn out good even if it doesn’t happen right away.
It's about a boy named Kali whose classmates often tease him. Sometimes some kids just like to be mean. I felt a bit upset when Kali didn't have any friends.
But one day a rat snake was on the ceiling, and it plopped(扑通掉下)down and Kali caught it. Then he made friends with his classmates after that. It’s a great book because it’s about snake catching and that’s the kind of thing that I like.
72. What is the text?
A. A recommendation(推荐)on books,
B. An advertisement for books.
C A book review. D. A book show.
73. What’s the reader’s feeling after reading the first book?
A. He wishes he were a super hero .
B. He thinks there are great things about being a boy.
C. He realizes being himself is greater.
D. He thinks that children should wish to be something else.
74. The reader’s attitude towards the second book is that___.
A. the writer has a gift for writing stories in circles
B. it is of no sense writing such a book
C. it is clever to present many stories on the same page
D. it is not as interesting as expected
75. According to the text, which statement is TRUE?
A. You can make friends with those who once laughed at you.
B. The rat snake is the only friend of Kali .
C. The reader feels upset after reading the third book.
