“We found there appears to be a genetic tendency to introduce your
friends__50__each other,” Christakis said.
There could be good, evolutionary reasons__51__this.People in the middle of a social network could be secret to useful gossip,__52__the location of food or good investment choices.
But they would also be at risk of catching effects from all sides—in which case the
advantage would__53__more cautious social behavior, they wrote in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

I found the imagination of becoming a grandmother somewhat discouraging.I was
younger than I thought a grandmother should be when I got the news that I was going to become one myself.I admit,it was not a role that I was emotionally ready to accept.I had been a young mother, and had certainly hoped my daughter would not face that_same_challenge.I remarried when she was a teenager ,and then had two more children. On getting the news that she was expecting ,I remember thinking “What do I know about being a g randmother? I haven't even finished raising my own kids yet!” I don't like to be unprepared,so I read a few books about grandparenting. That gave me a little help, but I was still uncertain.I thought about other grandmothers I knew, and got a few ideas I liked and a few more that
I didn't.But I couldn't quite figure out what kind of grandmother I wanted to
be.Then I thought about my own grandmother,Granny,as she's known by most people, and I knew I had the answer.
I didn't realize it until that moment, but my own grandmother was the example for
the kind of grandmother I wanted to be.I am fortunate that I got to spend a lot of time with my grandparents when I was a little kid. Here's what I learned from my Granny:
Grandmothers always have a cookie jar.For my entire life,Granny always had a cookie jar full of cookies. When I was a little tiny girl, just at eye level with the counter,Granny would get the cookie jar down for me.When I was a little older I learned how to pull the chair over so I could reach. As I got taller,if I really stretched,
I could reach the cookie jar with my finger tips and move it close enough to get
it down off the counter to find out what kind of treat was inside.Always the first thing I did when I went to Granny's house was check the cookie jar ,and there were always cookies in it.Many years later,I'll drive my own children to Granny's house and the first thing to do is get us all a cookie.
So grandmothers must have a cookie jar,and on my granddaugher's first Christmas,my daughter bought me my own cookie jar.She said when they came to see me,her daughter would find the treat the way she did and I did.
60.The writer thought it was a little discouraging to be a grandmother because________.
A.she was not old enough to be one
B.she was not emotionally ready to be one
C.she thought her daughter was too young to be a mother
D.grandmother should be older than she was
61.The underlined phrase “that same challenge” in the first paragraph refers to“________”.
A.taking care of a grandchild B.taking care of a baby
C.being a young grandmother D.being a young mother
62.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that________.
A.the writer has many happy memories of her grandmother's cookie jar
B.the writer always wanted to know what was inside her grandmother's cookie jar C.the writer often drove her grandchildren to see her grandmother's cookie jar D.women of the writer's age all have a cookie jar for their grandchildren 63.What kind of grandmother did the writer want to be?
A.One who has a jar filled with many kinds of cookies for children and herself.
B.One who grows up with her grandmother' cookie jar with all kinds of cookies.
C.One who is like her own grandmother with a cookie jar to treat her grandchildren.
D.One who always makes different kinds of cookies to treat her grandchildren.

When top engineers in Germany wanted to build a more energyefficient car, they headed to the natural history museum to study dolphins and sharks. But it was the boxfish (盒子鱼)that interested them.
“We were surprised when this clumsylooking fish became our model for designing an aerodynamic (空气动力学的)car”,says Thomas Weber. He is the research
and development chief for the car company Daimler. An aerodynamic design reduces wind drag and increases fuel efficiency.
The boxfish may look clumsy, but it can start, stop, back up and zigzag (曲折前
进)through the water with ease. And it does all this using surprisingly little energy.Daimler's bionic (仿生学的)car is modeled on the fish's boxy skeletal (骨豁的) system.Like the fish, the car is fast and drives easily. It's efficient too.
The science behind natureinspired inventions is called biomimicry (生物仿生).Biologist Janine Benyus came up with the term.As cofounder of the Biomimicry Guild, she has worked with cereal companies, sneaker designers and others to develop products based on Nature's best ideas.
This month ,the Nature's 100 Best List will be revealed at the World Conservation Congress (代表大会)in Barcelona,Spain.Benyus coauthored the list of nature inspired designs with economist Gunter Pauli.
In Zimbabwe ,a country in southern Africa ,engineers designed energyefficient buildings modeled on termite (白蚁)mounds (土堆).The buildings use vents (孔) to keep the air flowing and the temperature cool.
A company in Atlanta,US,developed a selfcleaning paint modeled on the lotus (荷花)leaf. When the paint dries,it becomes bumpy (不平的),just like the lotus leaf.Rain drops form on the bumps and roll off, carrying dirt along with them.
Nature has done billions of years of research.Only the bestd esigned products have panies owe Mother Nature a debt for all that hard work, says Benyus.
For scientists and inventors, the possibilities for copying nature are limitless.Technology may never be as efficient as nature,or as colorful. But that doesn 't mean we should stop trying to learn from the world around us.Take a walk outside.Watch a squirrel climb up a tree.Look closely at the veins (纹理)of a leaf.Hear the birds chirping in the trees.Such small details may help solve big problems in the future.
64.Which is TRUE according to the passage?
A.In America a selfcleaning paint was modeled on the lotus flower.
B.Zimbabwe engineers learned from termites to create highly advanced heating systems.
C.After the boxfish, many other ideas of new products are borrowed from nature.
D.Nature is a good source to turn to for improving technology.
65.The clumsylooking boxfish interested the scientists because of the following reasons EXCEPT that________.
A.it swims using little energy
B.being boxy,it looks quite like a car
C.some engineers had researched on how to swim easily in the water
D.it is a speedy swimmer
66.Why did top engineers in Germany go to the natural history museum?
A.They wanted to pay a visit to the animals there because they were so lovely.
B.They wanted to carry out a research of boxfish and dolphins.
C.They wanted to search for a model to base on for building a moreefficient car.
D.They wanted to study the science of survival.
67.We can infer from the passage EXCEPT________.
A.it is believed that the creation of the airplane might have originated from the bird flying in the sky
B.the atmosphere on the earth cannot be transferred into the original idea C.dolphins and sharks may become the source of scientists' inventions or creations D.if you observe and explore nature ,you may make great discoveries or become great inventors

Language learning begins with listening.Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and later starters are often long listeners. Most children will “obey” spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the word “obey” is hardly accurate as a description of the eager and delighted cooperation usually shown by the child. Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gesture and by making questioning noises.Any attempt to study the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves as particularly expressive as delight, pain, friendliness, and so on.But since these can't be said to show the baby's intention to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new words to their store. This selfimitation(模仿)leads on to deliberate(有意的)imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises as to the point at which one
can say that these imitations can be considered as speech. It is a problem we need to get out.The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation and it is clear that what a child means by a word will change as he gains more experience of the world .Thus the use at seven months of “mama” as a greeting for his mother cannot be dismissed as a meaningless sound simply because he also uses it at other times for his father, his dog,or anything else he likes.Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself,I doubt, however whether anything is gained when parents take advantage of this ability in an attempt to teach new sounds.
68.Before children start speaking, what is greatly different?
A.The amount of listening. B.A number of listening.
C.The sound of listening. D.the meaning of listening. 69.Later starters are often long listeners, the sentence means one can________.
A.be hard to speak fluently
B.begin to speak quickly
C.start with listening
D.often take a long time in learning to listen properly
70.These can not be said to show a baby's intention to speak,“these” refer to________.
A.pain B.happiness
C.kindness D.above of all
71.According to the writer,we can draw a conclusion that ________.
A.children are fond of imitating
B.these imitation can be considered as speech
C.children get more experience of the world
D.children's use of words are often meaningless

As a solo artist,Brightman has sold 26 million albums and two million DVDs in 34 countries. Her musical styles put opera, pop and jazz together. She is popular in the States but not here(Britain)—the image of her and her second husband,Andrew Lloyd Webber (he much older, she his muse) seems for ever frozen.
The 47yearold singer talks about the new album Symphony that came out of a “very dark time”,including h er decision to give up trying to have children.“People have suggested I could adopt,” Brightman says.“But work is central to my life now.And
so I am going to put it to one side. After a while not having children becomes the norm and perhaps that might sound alarming,to parents especially, but I have never known anything different.I'm not hurt by not having children. My life and career are incredibly rich.”
Talking about growing up in a large family in Berkhamsted (father a property developer who later committed suicide),she says: “I was gifted as a child, and very musical.I seemed to be good at anything to do with the arts.At 5 I understood the music I was dancing to and had an eye for costume.” She first appeared in a West End musical at 11 and hated boarding school.
Brightman led the saucy dance troupe(辣妹三人舞) Hot Gossip and had her first hit with I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper in 1978.At 18 she married a music manager called Andrew Graham Stewart.“I was probably in love but I can't remember.Girls chan ge such a lot between 18 and 22.It didn't really work out.” In 1981 she was spotted by Lloyd Webber. She became his leading lady in Song and Dance,Requiem and Phantom of the Opera. They married in 1984.
Brightman says she felt hostility(敌意) “from the beginni ng.I haven't tried to understand it.I've done very well everywhere else, especially the US,where I now live,I just accept it for what it is.The more you are away from Britain, the more you appreciate it.But I don't miss it,although I miss my family. Our profession can be uncomfortable but I enjoy what I do.I get on with it.”
72.The first paragraph tells us that ________.
A.Brightman is very popular around the world except in America
B.Brightman's musical style is a mixture of opera, pop and jazz
C.the British people don't like her for her style of music
D.Brightman is much older than Andrew Lloyd Webber
73.Brightman decided to give up having children because________.
A.she could adopt one
B.her life and career were unbelievably rich without children
C.she felt it normal not to have children
D.she was too busy
74.The following statements are true EXCEPT________.
A.Brightman first appeared in a West End musical at 5
B.Brightman disliked life on the campus
C.Brightman was very gifted when she was young
D.the saucy dance troupe made Brightman famous

Since I took office I've done everything in my power to protect our children from harm. We've worked to make their streets and their schools safer,to give them something positive to do after school and before their parents get home. We've worked to teach our children that drugs are dangerous, illegal and wrong.
Today,I want to talk to you about the historic opportunity we now have to protect our nation's children from an even more deadly threat:smoking.Smoking kills more people every day than AIDS,alcohol, car accidents, murders, suicides, drugs and fires combined.Nearly 90 percent of those smokers lit their first cigarette before they turned 18.Consider this:3,000 children start to smoke every day illegally, and 1,000 of them will die sooner because of it.
This is a national tragedy that every American should be honorbound to help prevent. For more than five years we've worked to stop our children from smoking before they start, launching a nationwide campaign to educate them about the dangers of smoking,to reduce their access to tobacco products, and to severely restrict tobacco companies from advertising to young people. If we do these,we'll cut teen smoking by almost half over the next five years. That means if we act now,we have it in our power to stop 3 million children from smoking and to save a million lives as a result.
