阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A
It was a Saturday morning, a day I believed would end in victory. For weeks, I had been preparing for the match at the county fairgrounds, sponsored(赞助) by our local riding club. My horse, Tonka, and I could run faster than any kid in the county, and I hoped to bring home a blue ribbon.
My mother usually drove me to the riding events, but on this day, my father planned
to drop us off at the fairgrounds with the horse trailer(马车) .
Although we never discussed it, my father’s struggle with alcoholism had become the silent center of our fami ly life. My mother was paralyzed with fear and indecision. Her salary as a part-time nurse couldn’t possibly support four children. No one talked about alcoholism in those days, and it was my family secret.
We climbed on the trailer and my father pulled out of our driveway and headed toward the fairgrounds, picking up speed once we hit the main road. It wasn’t until we felt a big bump that I realized the trailer was out of control. The dream of my riding winner disappeared. Tonka lay on the floor, completely still. No words were possible. I knew he was dead.
Suddenly a man appeared. “Are you all right?”he asked. “Yes.” I answered, although I knew that nothing was all right. “Sit here on the grass,” he said. He bent down to look into the trailer. Tonka remained still. He touched Tonka and then turned to face me. ‘‘He is going to be OK. He has just been knocked unconscious.” He rubbed Tonka’s cheeks and gently pulling his ears. Tonka rose to his feet.
Our father was talking to a police officer. He was upset and in pain and took little notice of me. I looked back; the man was gone.
I never forgot him. He gave me strength and a sense of hope in a dark and frightening moment.
21. The writer went to the fairgrounds because he wanted to ___________.
A. take part in a horse racing
B. buy Mum a blue ribbon
C. join the local riding club
D. train his horse there

23. What does “he’’ in the fourth paragraph refer to?
A. Father.
B. The stranger.
C. The horse.
D. The winner.
24. What does the author want to tell the readers through the story?
A. Once formed, bad habits are difficult to break.
B. Unexpected kindness is a light that shines in the darkness.
C. However mean your life is, meet it and live it.
D. Family is a place of encouragement, a safe harbor in the storms.
B
Dining in a completely dark room, unaware what’s on your plate whi le sitting next to a complete stranger may not sound like an ideal restaurant experience but it’s certainly an intriguing way to spend a rainy night in London.
Dans le Noir, close to London’s financial district, is a restaurant full of blind waiters and waitresses who become your eyes around the restaurant, whose original Paris branch opened in 2004.
In the bar with the light, you choose whether you want the fish, meat or vegetable, but the dishes themselves remain a secret, as do the ingredients of the “surprise” cocktails. Bags, coats and devices(设备) that light up, including watches and mobile phones, are kept in the bar. Placing your hand on the shoulder of your guide, you are led to a table in a black dining ro om that sets up to 60 people. And it is dark. The waiters tell you when the food is being placed down in front of you, then the fun begins, trying to get food into your mo uth, then identifying just what it is that’s on your plate, and finally whether you have missed any of it.
It’s also a great chance to break social convention and eat using your fingers. Those same fingers are also the only way you can tell how much win e you’re pouring into your glass.
The happy atmosphere in the dining room also made the night memorable. You can’t really avoid talking to the person next to you at the long tables and guessing what the dishes are certainly provides adequate fuel for the conversations.
All will be revealed at the end of the meal when you are led back out into the lit bar. Not only do you finally get to see what you’ve just been eating but also who you’ve been talking to for the last 90 minutes.
25. What does the under lined word “intriguing.” in the first paragraph mean?

D. New.

27. We know from the text that the customers in “Dans le Noir” _________.
A. are forbidden to eat with their fingers
B. can talk to the strangers at table
C. will look at the menu in a dark bar
D. can take their mobile phones into the dining room
28. Wha t’s the main purpose of the text?
A. To help blind people find a job in restaurants.
B. To show how to open a restaurant with a new idea.
C. To show how to enjoy the time in a dark restaurant.
D. To introduce and attract customers to “Dans le Noir”.

These days, it seems that almost all of us are too serious. My older daughter often says to me, “Daddy, you’ve got that serious look again.” Even those of us who are committed to non-seriousness are probably too serious. People are frustrated and anxious about almost everything—being five minutes late, witnessing someone look at us wrong or say the wrong thing, paying bills, waiting in line, overcooking a meal, making an honest mistake -- you name it, and we all lose perspective(理性判断)over it.
The root of being anxious is our unwillingness to accept life as being different, in any way, from our expectation. Very simply, we want things to be a certain way but they’re not a certain way. Life is simply as it is. Perhaps Benjamin Franklin said it best: “Our limited perspective, our hop es an d fears become our measure of life, and when circumstances don’t fit our ideas, they become our difficulties.” We spend our lives wanting things, people, and events to be just as we want them to be—and when they’re not, we fight and we suffer.
The first step in recovering from over-seriousness is to admit that you have a problem. You have to want to change, to become more easygoing. You have to see that your own anxiety is largely of your own creation—it’s made up of the way you have set up your life and the way you react to it.
The next step is to understand the link between your expectations and your frustration level. Whenever you expect something to be a certain way and it isn’t,
you’re upset and you suffer. On the other hand, when you let go o f your expectations, when you accept life as it is, you’re free.
A good exercise is to try to approach a single day without expectation. Don’t expect people to be friendly. When they’re not, you won’t be surprised or bothered; if they are, you’ll be delighted. Don’t expect your day to be problem-free. Instead, as problems come up, say to yourself, “Ah, another barrier to overcome.” As you approach your day in this manner you’ll notice how elegant life can be. Rather than fighting against life, you’ll be dancing with it. Pretty soon, with practice, you’ll lighten up your entire life. And when you lighten up, life is a lot more fun.
32. Why are people easily frustrated and anxious these days?
A. Because their children are disappointing.
B. Because they have to look serious in public.
C. Because life is becoming a greater burden.
D. Because people have lost sensible judgment.
33. According to Benjamin Franklin, what was the cause of over-seriousness?
A. The fact that people’s perspective, hopes and f ears are limited.
B. The fact that people can’t change life itself.
C. The fact that things fail to meet people’s expectations.
D. The fact that circumstances turn out to be difficult.
34. In what pattern is this article developed?
A. Phenomenon, causes and solutions.
B. Problems, explanation and conclusion.
C. Examples, causes and arguments.
D. Phenomenon, analysis and conclusion.
35. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. People seem to be too serious
B. Life is simply as it is
C. Hopes can turn into difficulties
D. A good exercise removes over-seriousness

Most of us lead unhealthy lives; we spend far too much sitting down. If in addition
we are careless about our diets, our bodies soon become loose and fatty and our systems slow moving.
36 I am thinking of such features of modern city life as pollution, noise, rushed meals and stress. But keeping fit is a way to reduce the effects of these evils. The usual suggestion to a person who is looking for a way to keep fit is to take up some sport or other. While it is true that every weekend you will find people playing football and hockey in the local park, they are outnumbered a hundred to one by the people who are simply watching them.
For those who do not particularly enjoy competitive sports— 37 —there
are such separate activities as cycling, walking, jogging and swimming. What often happens though is that you do them in such a leisurely way, so slowly, that it is doubtful if you are doing yourself much good, except for the fact that you have at least managed to get up out of your armchair.
Even after you have found a way for keeping in shape, through sport or gymnastics, 38 , because, according to the experts, you must also master the art of complete mental and physical relaxation(放松). 39 Yoga, as practiced in the West,
is the most widely known and popular of the systems for achieving the necessary state
of relaxation. It seems ironical (讽刺性的), though, that as our lives have improved
in a material sense we have found it increasingly necessary to go back to forms of activity— 40 —which were the natural way of life of our forefathers.
A. be active and practise Yoga
B. There are some aspects of our unhealthy lives that we cannot avoid.
C. and it is especially difficult to do so if you are not good at them
D. physical effort on the one hand and relaxation on the other
E. they spent most of the time out of doors
F. you are still only half way to good health
G. It has to do with deep breathing, emptying your mind of all thoughts, meditation, and so on.

参考范文:
Dear Tom,
I’m glad to hear that you are considering making up with Peter. If I were you,
I would consider a bike as a birthday present for him.
As far as I know, Peter is always in poor health so he can take more exercise
by riding a bike to build up his body. In the meanwhile, you can often go outing by bike together, which is helpful to rebuild your friendship. Besides, taking a bike
is an environmentally-friendly means of transport. It’s convenient for him to get around as well.
Apart from giving him a gift, you can also adopt other means, such as travelling, seeing a movie, having dinner and going shopping. No matter what you do, being sincere
is the most important. I really hope that we can be good friends forever.

(Text 1)
W: It’s going to be another warm day.
M:Of course. You know, I miss living somewhere that has four seasons.
W: Me, too. I especially miss those cool autumn mornings.
(Text 2)
W: Do you have any change for one dollar?
M:What do you want it for?
W: I need to pay for the parking fee.
M:I can just give you 4 quarters if that’ll help you.
(Text 3)
W: With all these new orders, we’re going to have to hire more production workers. M:Are you sure, Mr Heath? We still have plenty of goods available.
W: Yes, but that won’t last forever, and we just can’t ask our workers to put in any
more overtime.
(Text 4)
M:Excuse me, ma’ma. Why don’t you sit down here?
W: No, thank you. I’m getting off at the next bus stop.
(Text 5)
M:Welcome back, madam. How did you find the drive? It’s a bit different from your own car, isn’t it?
W: Well, I certainly liked the radio control. I always think I’m going to have an accident every time I change stations in my car.
(Text 6)
M:Good morning, Hilton Hotel. Can I help you?
W: Good morning. I’d like to book a single room with a bath.
M:I’m afraid the single room has been booked out. How about the double room with
a bath?
W: That’s ok. How much is the fee per night?
M:$70. When will you be arriving and leaving, sir?
W: From Monday, October 22nd to Friday, October 26th, for 4 nights.
(Text 7)
M:Jack, our teacher let me ask you which circus tickets you’ve decided to buy. W: Well. The re wasn’t much choice of them. There weren’t enough of the £12.50 seats for all of us, which is what I was planning to buy. And although there were lots of seats at £15.50, these were only on weekday afternoons, which I know wasn’t suitable for us. So I’m afraid I’ve gone for the ones at £17.50. I know it’s more
than we wanted to pay, but at least we won’t be right at the back.
W: OK.
(Text 8)
W: How did you get interested in country music?
M: Well, when my friend and I first got our record player, we started to buy all kinds of records—jazz, country music and rock. Soon I found that I was buying more country music records than any other kind.
M:How did you start working for the radio station?
W: I thought there should be a radio program of country songs, so I went to CBC and suggested it. That was how we started the program called Golden Country Time. M:Then you were asked to write articles to explain the background of those songs. W: Yes, but soon I got tired of running to the library to find information, so I started buying country song books and building my own library.
(Text 9)
M:I’m tired. I went to sleep late last night.
W: Did you work overtime again?
M:No. I watched that new reality TV show till midnight.
W: Oh, you didn’t watch that rubbish, did you? It’s just a group of people, stuck in a
house, doing nothing! I have to admit it was attractive when it was new. But it’s strange to think people are still watching the same shows nowadays. It seems to me
that those shows just feed the big desire everyone seems to have for media attention.
Everyone wants to be a star these days.
M:But there are still some people signing up for those shows just to experience a different life or to earn some money.
W: Anyway, I have no interest in these nobodies whose idea of fame is that they were on a reality TV show. I admire people with real talent who’ve actually earned their
fame because they are different from the rest of us.
M:Hmm, I don’t think so on that way. Maybe we need to rethink what fame is! (Text 10)
