A Nobel Prize is considered by most people as one of the highest international honours a person can receive。
As you know, the prizes were started by a Swede called Alfred Nobel。
He was born in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden。
Alfred Nobel was a great scientist. He made
two important inventions, so he became very rich。
He never married or had children in his life.
When he died at the age of 63, he left a fund of $9,000,000. The money was to be used in giving prizes to those who made great achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine and literature, and for world peace。
The first Nobel Prizes were given on 10 December 1901, five years after Nobel’s death。
Since then many famous people from all over the world have been given Nobel Prizes for their achievements. Each prize has three parts. The first part is a gold medal. Second, a winner of a Nobel Prize is given a diploma saying that he or she has been given the prize. The third part of the prize is a large amount of money—about $49,000。
Often a prize is given to just one person, but not always. Sometimes a prize is shared。
It may be given to two or more persons who have worked together. It is also sometimes true that a prize is not given at all if there is no great achievement. In 1972, for example, no Nobel Peace Prize is given.

Sometimes your biggest weakness can become your biggest strength. A 10-year-old boy decided to study judo (柔道) though he had lost his left arm in a serious car accident。
The boy began his lessons with an old Japanese judo master。
The boy was doing well, so he couldn’t understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move。
“Sensei (老师),”the boy finally said,“shouldn’t I be learning more moves?” “This is the
only move you know, and this is the only move you’ll ever need to know,”the sensei replied.
Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training. Several months later, the sensei took the boy to his first competition。
Surprising himself, the boy easily won
his first two matches。
The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent (对手) became impatient。
The boy skillfully used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals。
This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched。
Thinking that the boy might get hurt, the referee (裁判)called a timeout。
He was about to stop the match when the sensei said to him,“No, let him continue。
”
Soon after the match restarted, his opponent made a big mistake. The boy won! He was
mind。
“Sensei, how could I win the competition with only one move?”“You won for two
reasons,” the sensei answered。
“First, you’ve almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo。
Second, the only known defense (防御) for that move is for your opponent to catch your left arm.”
The boy’s biggest weakness had become his biggest
strength。

We all have days when we are down, tired and unhappy. That’s OK。
You need days like this, or how can you know you are happy? You’ll enjoy your good days even more when you have a few bad days。
Even if sadness is part of life, let’s try to make it small.
Here are a few simple ways to help you feel better when you are feeling sad。
First, stand up straight and this helps your energy flow (流动). When your energy is
flowing freely, you can flow too. Second, smile! A smile takes little effort but produces good results。
It can bring not only you but also people around you a good mood. Third, listen to music。
It can be the music that you like best. Some kinds of music work better than others, so try and find out what kind of music works the best for you. Fourth, take some “me”time. You can find pleasure in reading a book, watching a sunrise or having a hot bath, or something like that. Last but not least, exercise。
Even something as simple as taking a walk will get your blood flowing. It is a great way to clear your mind of anything that makes you sad.
These ways will cheer you up when you are down, but don’t just use them when you are sad. Try and practise them every day to make them a habit。
You will be surprised to learn that these simple ways will keep your sadness away。
But if you are in a deep depression
(沮丧), go to see a doctor.

九、Sample writing
Changes in my hometown
Great changes have taken place in my hometown during the past few years. In the past, the roads were very dirty and narrow. What’s more, there was rubbish everywhere. People
lived in low houses. They could only listen to the radio or watch TV in their free time。
There were a lot of open spaces.
But now the dirty narrow roads have been turned into wide clean ones, with green trees, modern shops and tall buildings on both sides of them。
People here have moved into new
flats。
More people have bought their own computers, mobile phones and even private cars!
I feel satisfied with life in my new hometown. I will work hard to make it more beautiful
in the future。
