威廉·莎士比亚（1564-1616）文艺振兴时期英国最伟大的诗人和剧作家。

他诞生于英国中部斯特拉特福镇的一个羊毛商的家庭。

幼年在本地的文法学校里他开始接触戏剧，并对其发生浓厚爱好。

1585年前后在伦敦谋生，几年后进入剧院工作。

在取得舞台工作体会以后，莎士比亚开始了戏剧创作工作。

莎士比亚在其勤奋的一生中共写了三十七部剧本，一百五十四首十四行诗和两首叙事长诗。

要紧的作品有：《罗密欧与朱丽叶》、《哈姆莱特》、《奥塞罗》、《李尔王》、《麦克白》和《雅典的泰门》等。
