Taking a picture of Mars is not easy. Once light bounces off the planet, it can take between 3 to 22 minutes to travel to Earth - so there aren’t truly “live” images of Mars.
But on Friday afternoon, the European Space Agency will offer the closest thing: the first “livestream” of Mars a rare, almost real-time look into space on YouTube, which posts pictures of the planet every 50 seconds as they beam down directly from the camera mounted (安装) on the agency’s Mars Express orbiter (轨道飞行器). We can get a firsthand look at Mars on Friday.
“During Friday’s one-hour livestream, the time between the images being taken from orbit around Mars and appearing on your screen will be about 18 minutes,” James Godfrey, the spacecraft operations manager at the ESA’s mission control center, said in a statement. “That’s 17 minutes for light to travel from Mars to Earth in their current configuration, and about one minute to pass through the wires and servers on the ground. ”
“Normally, we see images from Mars and know that they were taken days before. I’m excited to see Mars as it is now - as close to a Martian(火星人) ‘now’ as we can possibly get!’ In 50-second intervals, the camera shoots across Mars, showing a side of the planet entering night, as well as some clouds billowing out on the comer. The livestream celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Mars Express mission which was launched in 2003 to better understand the planet, as well as search for traces of water.
It’s with this camera, originally meant for engineering purposes, that we’ll get ”live“ images on Friday evening from 18:00 CEST in the first MarsLIVE. What makes this unique, is that it’s a one-hour livestream from Mars but don’t expect a detailed view of the Red Planet!
8.What can we learn from this text?
A.Watching the MarsLIVE, people will have a completely real-time view of the Mars.
B.The audience can watch the MarsLIVE thanks to the camera on the Mars
C.About 20 years ago, the ESA launched an orbiter to search for Martians.
D.The MarsLIVE is to celebrate the launch of the Mars Express mission in 2003.
9.What does the underlined word ”configuration“ in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Equipment. B.Orbit. C.Planet. D.Spacecraft. 10.What is the text mainly about?
A.The live images taken from orbit around Mars.
B.The 20th anniversary of the Mars Express mission.
C.The first ”livestream“ of Mars to be shown on YouTube.
D.A rare and almost real-time look into space on YouTube.
11.What does the last paragraph imply?
A.The camera was originally used to shoot the Mars.
B.We can get truly live Mars images in the first MarsLIVE.
C.Detailed images about the Mars can’t be ensured.
D.The unique MarsLIVE will live up to viewers’ expectation.
【答案】8.D 9.A 10.C 11.C

根据后文“and about one minute to pass through the wires and servers on the

故选A 项。

根据第二段“But on Friday afternoon, the European Space Agency will offer the closest thing: the first “livestream” of Mars a rare, almost real-time look into space on YouTube, which posts pictures of the planet every 50 seconds as they beam down directly from the camera mounted (安装) on the agency’s Mars Express orbiter (轨道飞行器). 这个视频的独特之处在于,它是一小时的火星直播,但别指望能看到这颗红色星球的详细景象!)”可知,别指望能看到这颗红色星球的详细景象,也就是暗示了关于火星的详细图像无法保证。

故选C项。

Whenever you read text, your brain processes the visual stimuli (刺激物) to create meaning and understand the content. Chances are, you don’t pay much attention to the way the information is presented- particularly the font (字体) choice. That’s because your main target is reading comprehension, not aesthetics.
Although typography(排印) is missed by most of us, it’s essential in making texts legible, readable and appealing for audiences. Beyond the visual aspect, research shows that fonts play a significant role in the mental processes of understanding that happen while we read. A font’s impact on the way you learn and memorize information might be hard to notice consciously, but your brain is certainly tuned in. Perhaps surprisingly, hard-to-read fonts such as Bodoni, Comic Sans, or Monotype Corsiva are better for memorizing information than fonts like Arial or Times New Roman, according to some studies.
“Difficulty can function as an alarm signal, giving the reader a sense that the task is challenging and will require mental effort,” says Daniel Oppenheimer, a professor of psychology at Carnegie Mellon University and one of a 2010 study authors, “Additionally, slowing down the reading speed to deal with the disfluency may increase the probability of spotting errors in a text.”
Font characteristics such as style, size and color play a role in information retention memory or recall as well, says Stephen Banham, a typography lecturer at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. Experiments have proved a U-shape relationship between font size and memory: Large-font items may predict higher recall regardless of style, but very small font sizes can also introduce a desirable difficulty.
A document’s specific method of formatting information also makes an impact. Using font styles like bold or italics to indicate significance can also improve memory. That’s because people are better able to remember information they consider important, says Oppenheimer. Researchers found that bolded text has a higher recall than text in italic or regular styles, regardless of the font size. However, if an entire document is bolded, the emphasis is lost, and readers can no longer spot vital passages.
12.Why do readers often ignore the font choice?
A.They lack aesthetic knowledge. B.They aim to understand the meaning.
C.Their brains are not sensitive to the font. D.Fonts are of little significance in reading. 13.What does Daniel Oppenheimer say about hard-to-read fonts?
A.They can lead to desirable challenges. B.They may distract readers from the text.
C.The meaning of the text may be mistaken. D.They will affect reading performance negatively.
14.What can improve people’s information retention or recall?
A.Using fonts of medium size. B.Choosing bright font colors.
C.Putting the words in italic type D.Making the whole passage bold. 15.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.What Fonts Make Reading Easy B.What Fonts Make Memory Lasting
C.Why Fonts Impact Retention and Recall D.How Fonts Affect Learning and Memory 【答案】12.B 13.A 14.C 15.D

根据第一段中“That’s because your main target is reading comprehension, not aesthetics.( 这是因为你的主要目标是阅读理解,而不是审美。

根据第三段中““Difficulty can function as an alarm signal, giving the reader a sense that the task is challenging and will require mental effort,”(“难度可以作为一个警报信号,让读者意识到这项任务是具有挑战性的,需要付出精神努力。

”)”以及本段中“Additionally, slowing down the reading speed to deal with the disfluency may increase the probability of spotting errors in a text.(此外,放慢阅读速度来处理不流畅可能会增加在文本中发现错误的可能性。

A选项“They can lead to desirable challenges.( 它们可以带来有利的挑战。

)”。

故选A。

根据最后一段中“Using font styles like bold or italics to indicate significance can also improve memory. That’s because people are better able to remember information they consider important, says Oppenheimer.(使用粗体或斜体等字体样式来表示重要性也可以提高记忆力。

根据第二段中“ Beyond the visual aspect, research shows that fonts play a significant role in the mental processes of understanding that happen while we read. A font’s impact on the way you learn and memorize information might be hard to notice consciously, but your brain is certainly tuned in.(除了视觉方面,研究表明,字体在我们阅读时的心理理解过程中起着重要作用。

People these days are posting about their lives on social media. But what if you’re a private
and introverted person like me? What if you want to live in the moment instead of sharing every bit of your life? To be honest, it’s nobody’s business but your own. 16
Escaping stalkers (跟踪者).
I’ve been a public person as a jazz vocalist for years. It exposed me to stalkers who felt they knew me, just because I was present everywhere. Needless to say, it brought me much anxiety and stress. At some point I asked myself-is being visible more important than my peace of mind?
17 The answer is a clear NO. I just want to spend life doing what I love with the people I love. Protecting privacy
18 I need alone time to process what I’m struggling with and honest real talks with the people I trust. I might share a lesson learned from an experience, but now I won’t. I know that by keeping my life private on social media I may miss out on some connections, but I honor and respect the people in my life who value their privacy, so I am being mindful and protect that.
19
Another reason I keep my life private is that I prefer to be in the present moment and appreciate it fully. To be on your phone constantly, or to film everything you do, can be quite disrespectful to the people you spend your time with. You lose out on those spontaneous(自发的) moments and a deeper connection. I choose what I share and when I share it, and the rest is for experiencing life without expectations.
Live your life fully, regardless of whether the world knows it or not! 20 I just want you to know it’s OK if you don’t.
A.Experiencing life
B.Living in the moment
C.Don’t I really care about privacy?
D.Are my followers more important than my friends and family?
E.If you feel like sharing your life openly without hesitation, go for it.
F.Here are my reasons for not sharing my personal life on social media.
G.It can be quite challenging to go through tough moments with everyone watching.

16.根据前文“People these days are posting about their lives on social media. But what if you’re a private and introverted person like me? What if you want to live in the moment instead of sharing every bit of your life? To be honest, it’s nobody’s business but your own.(现在人们都在社交媒体上晒自己的生活。

17.根据前文“At some point I asked myself-is being visible more important than my peace of mind?(有时我问自己——被人看见比内心的平静更重要吗?)”以及后文“The answer is a clear NO.(答案显然是否定的)”可知,后文是在回答问题,所以空处应是接着提问,所以D项“Are my followers more important than my friends and family?(我的粉丝比我的朋友和家人更重要吗?)”符合文意,引出后文“I just want to spend life doing what I love with the people I love.(我只想和我爱的人一起做我爱的事)”。

故选D项。

18.分析设空,位于段首,应总领下文,根据后文“I need alone time to process what I’m struggling with and honest real talks with the people I trust.(我需要独处的时间来处理我正在挣扎的事情,和我信任的人真诚地交谈)”可知,作者需要私人时间,所以G项“It can be quite challenging to go through tough moments with everyone watching.(在所有人的注视下度过艰难时刻是相当具有挑战性的)”符合文意,引出下文。

故选G项。

19.分析设空,为本段小标题,根据后文“Another reason I keep my life private is that I prefer to be in the present moment and appreciate it fully. To be on your phone constantly, or to film everything you do, can be quite disrespectful to the people you spend your time with. You lose out on those spontaneous(自发的) moments and a deeper connection. I choose what I share and when I share it, and the rest is for experiencing life without expectations(另一个让我保持私人生活的原因是,我更喜欢活在当下,充分欣赏它。

20.根据前文“Live your life fully, regardless of whether the world knows it or not!(充实地过你的生活,不管世人知不知道!)”以及后文“I just want you to know it’s OK if you don’t.(我只是想让你知道,如果你不这样做也没关系)”可知,作者在总结,他并不反对分享生活,只是说不这样做也没关系,所以E项“If you feel like sharing your life openly without hesitation, go for it.(如果你想毫不犹豫地公开分享你的生活,那就去做吧)”承接上下文,符合文意。

故选E 项。
