The directors (负责人) of tourism administration (旅游局) are trying to make their provinces and areas more well-known through social media. In one popular short film that got tens of thousands of likes, a woman is wearing white head-wear and a white dress of the Oroqen ethnic group (鄂伦春族) and walking in a snow-covered forest. Once upon a time there was a piece of wood. It was not an expensive piece of wood. Just a common (普通的)block of firewood, one of those thick logs(圆木)that are put on the fire in winter to make cold rooms warm.
One fine day this piece of wood found itself in the shop of an old carpenter(木匠). Everyone called him Mastro Cherry, for the tip of his nose was so round and red and shiny that it looked like a ripe cherry.
As soon as he saw that piece of wood, Mastro Cherry was filled with joy. Rubbing(摩擦) his hands together happily, he said to himself, “This has come in time. I shall use it to make the leg of a table.” But as he was about to give it the first blow, he stood still with arm uplifted, for he had heard a little voice say, “Please be careful! Do not hit me so hard!”
What a surprise!
He turned frightened eyes about the room to find out where that voice had
come from and he saw no one! He looked under the bench—no one! He
searched the room—no one! He opened the door to look up and down the
street—and still no one!
“Oh, I see!” he then said, laughing and shaking his head. “There may be
something wrong with my ears. Well, well—to work once more.”
He struck another blow hard on the piece of wood.
“Oh, oh! You hurt me!” cried the same far-away little voice.
Mastro Cherry’s mouth opened wide.
“Where did that voice come from when there is no one around? This piece of wood has learned to cry like a child? I can hardly believe it. Here it is—a piece of common firewood, the same as any other. Yet—might someone be hidden in it? If so, the worse for him. I’ll fix him!”
With these words, he threw it to the floor, against the walls of the room, and even up to the ceiling.
He listened for the tiny voice to cry. He waited two minutes—nothing; five minutes—nothing; ten minutes—nothing.
“Oh, I see,” he said, trying bravely to laugh and touching his hair. “Well, well—to work once more!” So he tried to sing a song to get courage, and worked on.
“Stop it! Oh, stop it! Ha, ha, ha! You tickle(挠痒) my stomach.” This time poor Mastro Cherry fell as if shot. When he opened his eyes, he found himself sitting on the floor.

That year, I was a Junior 2 student. Falling off the stairs hurt me in the head. Almost everyone thought I was dead. But they were wrong. However, it was difficult to get back to normal life. I had to leave school and learn everything, walking, talking, and yes, maths.
To help me with that task, Mrs. Pillar volunteered to come to the hospital and later to my house once a week. We began with basic maths skills. As time passed by, I made progress.
I remember very vividly how she came to my home on Sundays, sat with me at the kitchen table and threw different coins on the table. She asked me to show her 38 cents, 17 cents, 63 cents. It was challenging, but she also made it fun.
After a year and a half, I had progressed a lot, both in body and mind, to return to school. Seven years later, I graduated from the University of Texas at the top of my class.
As years went by, I always kept in touch with Mrs. Pillar. Unluckily, one day my parents told me that Mrs. Pillar had been in hospital because she suffered a stroke (中风).
Now it was my turn to help her. Mrs. Pillar lay in bed, unable to speak or know anybody around. I pulled some coins out of my pocket, dropped them on her bed, and asked her to show me 12 cents. The nurse thought that my action was very strange until one day Mrs. Pillar smiled happily as I began working with her—just as she had worked with me years before. She made progress every day and was moved out of ICU (重症监护室) and finally out of hospital.
One day, I ca lled to wish her a happy New Year. She spoke into the phone excitedly, “Happy New Year to you and your family, Michael. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.” I quickly said, “Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.”
Mrs. Pillar was one of my Junior 2 teachers, but she taught me so much more about life than only maths.

How much do you know about terraces (梯田) in China? Imagine
mountains held in silver water, shining in the spring sun. Summer sees
the mountains turn green with growing rice. During autumn, these same
mountains are gold, and in winter they are covered with white frost.
36
These terraces were built by the local Zhuang and Yao people in Guangxi. It was hard work when they started. 37 Reaching as far as the eye can see, these terraces cover tall mountains, often from
the bottom to the very top.
38 Firstly, building the terraces meant that they could increase more fields to grow rice. Secondly, the flat terraces catch the rainwater and stop the soil from being washed away.
People have worked in harmony with nature to make these terraces. The terraces have hundreds of waterways that connect with each other. During the rainy season, it is along these waterways that rainwater moves down the mountains and into the terraces. 39 This forms clouds and then rain falls down onto the mountain terraces once again.
Though modern technology could help produce more crops, these terraces still mean a lot to the local people. 40 This knowledge is passed down through families, which means that people will continue to use ancient methods of farming to keep the terraces. Today, the Longji Rice Terraces receive
high praise for being a great wonder created by people and nature working together.
A. For them, traditions hold too much value.
B. It is quite useless for the people to work there.
C. The sun heats the water and turns it into vapour(水蒸气).
D. These are the amazing colours of the Longji Rice Terraces.
E. There are reasons why people turn the mountains into terraces.
F. Working on the terraces took them hundreds of years from Yuan Dynasty to Qing Dynasty.
