21.(6分)October sixteenth is World Food Day. This day is also the anniversary of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization(F. A.O.).The UN agency leads international efforts to defeat world hunger. It was created in 1945.
The F. A.O. says more than one hundred fifty countries are to hold special events to celebrate World Food Day. At F. A.O. headquarters in Rome, for example, runners will compete in a five-kilometer race through the city’s historical area. Events in other countries include discussions among experts, press conferences and musical programs.
The message of this year’s World Food Day is “investing in agriculture for food security”. The F. A.O. says, “During the early 1990s, the foreign aid for agriculture was nine thousand million dollars each year. But now, it has declined to less than five thousand million dolla rs a year.” Yet, the F. A.O. estimates that more than eight hundred and fifty million people around the world do not get enough food.
The UN agency notes that seventy percent of the world’s hungry lies in the farmers who grow small amount of food. Many also face problems of feeding themselves. The F. A.O. says agricultural aid could help small farmers make a profit from their crops. Farmers would also be able to feed their families throughout the year and re-invest in their farms. They could buy better seeds, equipment and chemical fertilizers to help their crops grow.

22.(8分)The country is India. A large dinner party is being given in an
up-country station by ac olonial official and his wife. The guests are army and government officers and their wives, and an American naturalist.
At one side of the long table, a spirited discussion springs up between a young girl and an army officer. The girl insists women have long outgrown the
jumping-on-a-chair-at-the-sight-of-a-mouse era, and that they are not as anxious as their grandmothers were. The officer says they are, arguing women haven't the actual nerve control of men.
“A woman's reaction in any crisis,” the officer says, “is to scream. And while a man may feel lik e it, he has that ounce more of control than a woman has. ”
The American scientist does not join in the argument but sits and watches the faces of the other guests. As he stares, he sees a slight, though strange look of anxiety come over the face of the hostess. With a small gesture she summons the servant standing behind her chair. She whispers to him. The servant's eyes widen. He turns quickly and
leaves the room. No one else sees this, nor the servant when he puts a bowl of milk on the balcony outside the glass doors.
The American understands. In India, milk in a bowl means only one thing. It is bait fora snake. He realizes there is a cobra in the room. The American's eyes move across the room but he sees nothing. He realizes the snake can only be in one place - under the table.
His first reaction is to jump back and warn the others. But he knows any sudden movement will frighten the cobra and it will strike. He speaks quickly, the quality of his voice so arresting that it quietens everyone. “I want to kno w just what control everyone at this table has. I will count three hundred - that's five minutes - and not one of you is to move a single muscle. Now! Ready!”
The 20 people sit like stone images while he counts. He is saying “…two hundred and eighty…”. whe n, out of the corner of his eye, he sees the snake emerge and make for the bowl of milk. Four or five screams ring out as he jumps to slam shut the balcony doors.
“There is your proof!” the host says. “A man has just shown us real control.”
“Just a minute,” the American says, turning to his hostess, “How did you know that cobra was in the room?”
A faint smile comes across the woman's face as she replies. “Because it was lying across my foot.”

2、Why is the servant asked to put out some milk?
A.To play a trick.
B.To serve the guests.
C.To attract the snake .
D.To feed the hostess's pet.
3、Why does the scientist suggest the guests play a game?

4、What does the author imply through the hostess's final statement?
A.The army officer's opinion is wrong.

23.(8分)Encouraging children to use gestures as they think can help them come up with more creative ideas, according to new research.
“Our findings show that children naturally gesture when they think of unusual ways to use everyday items, ”says psychological scientist Elizabeth Kirk. “When we then asked children to move their hands, they were able to come up with even more creative ideas. ”
“Gesturing may allow us to explore the properties(特性)of the items — for example, how the item could be held, its size, its shape, etc. — and doing so can help us come up with ideas for creative uses, ” Kirk explains.
In their first study, the researchers compared the creativity of children who spontaneously (自发地)gestured with those who either did not or could not gesture.
A total of 78 children, aged 9-11, saw a series of images of ordinary items, such as a newspaper, a tin can, and a kettle. The researchers asked the children to look at each image and list as many uses as they could think of. A group of participants completed the task twice — on one version of the task, they wore mittens(连指手套)that limited their ability to gesture.
Restricting children’s ability to gesture did not affect their ability to come up with creative uses for the objects; Children who were free to gesture produced about the same number of ideas as those who wore the mittens and could not gesture.
In a second experiment, 54 children completed the same alternative-uses task. In some cases, children gestured normally; in other cases, the researchers encouraged the children to“use your hands to show me how you could use the object in different ways”.
The encouragement worked: Children who were specifically encouraged to gesture produced a greater number of creative uses for the objects than did the children who
were not given any special instruction.
“Our findings add to the growing body of evidence showing the significant role of gesture in thinking and have applications to the classroom,” Kirk concluded in their paper.
1、What did the researchers intend to find out in the first experiment?
A.The number of creative ideas the children could think of.
B.How the children would explore the properties of the items.
C.Whether encouraging gesture would help to produce more new ideas.
D.The difference between thinking with gestures and without gestures.
2、Why were mittens used in the experiment?
A.To restrict gestures.
B.To limit creative thinking.
C.To test the ability to gesture,
D.To increase creative ideas.
3、When did the children think of the most new ideas?
A.When wearing mittens.
B.When encouraged to gesture.
C.When naturally gesturing.
D.When not using their hands.
4、What would be the best title for the text?
A.Communicate with Gestures
B.Think with Your Hands
C.Use Everyday Items Creatively
D.Make Gestures when Necessary

29、Dear friends,
In recent years, many of us spend a lot of time on the Internet with its popularity.
As a result, our handwriting is not so good as it was in the past. In order to protect our Chinese characters and write both nicely and neatly, we’d like to offer some suggestions.
We should spend less time online so that we can have more time to read books and newspapers. We’d better form t he habit of practicing calligraphy and keeping diaries every day. Besides, it is better to writer letters to our relatives and friends by hand rather than send e-mails.
As the saying goes, “The style is the man.” Beautiful and neat handwriting is beneficial to us students. So please pay more attention to our handwriting in the future.
Let’s take actions now!
