When the British Museum opened in 1759 it was the first of its kind in the world: the only national museum open to the public. It was—and still is—free to visit. The displays are organised by location and time period: Ancient Iran, Greece, China from 5000 BC onwards, Roman Britain and so on. Overwhelmed? Follow a free eye-opener tour on your smart phone or book onto the Around the World in 90 Minutes guided tour.

Five years ago, I took a career risk by leaving my job to work on a ship. My medical friends did their best to persuade me, saying that running away to sea would ruin my career. But after these years working as a junior, I was willing to take the risk.
Hungry for adventure, I boarded a ship in Singapore with 2,000, passengers and crew. To my relief, the hospital was well equipped, with an X-ray machine and a blood analyzer. That first voyage was a learning experience, a tight schedule full of safety drills. There was so much new information to take in. Even remembering which uniform to wear each day was a challenge. Most confusing, I often forgot to set my clock when'the ship crossed time zones.
As a doctor, I was responsible for 600 crew, and I was on call for the entire ship. Far from treating seasickness and sunburn, I had to deal with other diseases, for my patients were wide and varied. The ship's medical center was actually a floating emergency room, and, we didn't have a team of specialists on hand for a second opinion. With long and unpredictable hours, it required mental toughness.
As you can guess, many of the passengers were elderly, heart attacks. don't care about geography and emergency evacuating(疏散)was difficult to arrange. I recall one such patient, who was taken off the ship halfway through the Panama Canal. After a terrifying ride in an old ambulance, I was relieved that the patient survived long enough'to arrive at the hospital in Panama City.
Thankfully, there, were several. unexpected benefits to the job, I regularly enjoyed the passenger facilities and I even hosted my own table of passengers in the evenings. On rare days off, I volunteered as a tour guide on trips ashore. I got to fly over Alaska in a seaplane and watched a ballet in St. Petersburg.
Now, I understand being a ship doctor is not a job—it's a way of life. One year at sea became two. I lost my career ambitions, but I redefined happiness in my life.
(1)How did the writer feel working on the ship?
A.Regretful.
B.Satisfied.
C.Scared.
D.Nervous.
(2)What was the writer's most difficult thing on the ship?
A.Wearing the same uniform each day.
B.Absorbing plenty of new information.
C.Having a tight timetable full of safety drills.
D.Forgetting to adjust time by time zones.
(3)The patient taken off the ship halfway through the Panama Canal ________.
A.suffered from an unknown disease
B.was taken to a safe place immediately
C.got timely treatment in the hospital
D.died on the way to the nearest hospital
(4)Why did the writer lose his career ambitions later on?
A.He had a new understanding of happiness.
B.He could enjoy the passenger facilities.
C.He was content to be a tour guide on trips.
D.He gave up the dream of being a doctor.

For my first year at Oxford, I barely said anything in tutorials(辅导课).
We'd have 2-3 tutorials a week, each ranging from 1 to 3 hours. Some would feel informal with comfortable chairs and teas, sitting and chatting with a few friends. Others would feel more like we were being grilled for facts. In both types, I was pretty quiet. I was shy, introverted, and worried that everyone would think I was stupid. The fact is that everyone in Oxford, Harvard, Yale, etc, has felt insecure about their intelligence at some point. I didn't volunteer in discussions and, as a result, I didn't understand much. My understandings of different texts never matured or became complex. They stayed the same. And they were often wrong.
Then, somewhere in the middle of my second year, I got over myself, stopped being worried, and offered more of my own opinions. I responded to others, asked thoughtful questions, and interacted way more. I always asked if I didn't understand something. Most of the time, others also didn't understand the thing I was confused about and felt happy I asked.
I went from being a passive learner and having everything go over my head to being an active learner and having tons more information understood. In tutorials, I took notes. After tutorials, I reviewed those notes. I rewrote them. I explained new concepts to my friends in other subject areas. And I felt smarter. I went from struggling and failing to thriving and suddenly getting firsts on my essays.
Being an active student also means asking for help. So I recommend you to visit your tutor during office hours and ask for their help or ask your peers to help explain stuff to you. Or get a mentor(导师)if you can. I had a PhD student mentor me once a week over coffee in my final year. It was the best thing that happened to my studies.

An international team led by scientists at the Hong Kong University of Science and
Technology(HKUST)has recently developed the world's first 3D artificial eye with capabilities that even outperform those of the human eyes, bringing vision to humanoid robots and new hope to patients with visual damage.
Scientists have spent decades trying to produce the exact copies of the structure and clarity of a biological eye, but vision provided by existing artificial eyes with external wires are still in poor resolution(分辨率)with 2D flat image sensors. The Electrochemical Eye(EC-Eye)developed at HKUST, however, may actually offer sharper vision than a human eye, with extra functions such as the ability to see things in darkness.
The key feature allowing such breakthroughs is a 3D artificial retina(视网膜), made of nanowire light sensors which are like the photoreceptor in human retinas. The scientists connected the nanowire light sensors to some liquid-metal wires serving as nerves behind the human-made retina during the experiment, and successfully carried out the visual signal transmission to reflect what the eye sees onto the computer screen. In the future, those nanowire light sensors could be directly connected to the nerves of the visually damaged patients. Apart from that, the artificial retina can receive more light signals and potentially attain a higher image resolution than human retina.
With further adjustment, the EC-Eye can be a self-powered image sensor, so there is no need for external power source, which will be much more user-friendly as compared with the current technology. "The current artificial eyes are still of no match to the human eyes. A new technology is in urgent need, and it gives me a strong motivation to start this unconventional project. In the next step, we plan to further improve the performance of our device. Animal and clinical trials are now being planned. I think if everything is on track, perhaps in five years, the technology will become practical," said Prof. Fan, whose team has spent nine years to complete the current study.
(1)What's the feature of the EC-Eye?
A.It uses 2D flat image sensors.
B.It performs better at night than in the day.
C.It is attached with external wires.
D.It provides a clearer vision than human eyes.
(2)What's the function of nanowire light sensors?
A.To send computer signals.
B.To serve as nerves behind the retina.
C.To receive visual signals.
D.To connect nerves of patients to the wires.
(3)What can we infer about the EC-Eye from Dr. Fan's words?
A.It is of no match to human eyes.
B.It has been improved by the team.
C.It will be in clinical trials in five years.
D.It is different from the previous devices.
(4)What can be the best title for the text?
A.EC-Eye will become popular in the near future.
B.Nanowire light sensors help people see in darkness.
C.3D technology helps to cure people of their eye diseases.
D.Scientists have developed first artificial eye with 3D retina.

Every once in a while, as FedEx driver Aubrey made her regular delivery stops in a neighborhood in rural
southeastern Indiana, she'd come across a young boy playing basketball with a broken hoop(球筐).
The boy was so joyful playing basketball, which stuck with Aubrey and reminded her of the past days as a
kid, when the sport was her safe harbor. She was bullied(欺负)for years in school, so basketball was a
shelter away from her life as a kid. She had a neighbor install(安装)a basketball hoop for her across the
street because he knew how much she loved it.
Aubrey just wouldn't stop thinking about it and she really wanted to get the boy a hoop. Months later,
Aubrey decided to get the 11-year-old boy, Elijah, a new hoop and had the hoop installed while the family
wasn't home. With her surprising gift she left a note: "Just want you to have the best hoop that will grow with
you and all your friends, " she wrote, signing it as "just one of the FedEx drivers in the area. "
After installing the hoop and leaving the note, Aubrey didn't return to the neighborhood for weeks. She
thought the family wouldn't realize it was her, but she was more than satisfied to know in her heart she
probably "made the kid's day. " It tuned out she did a lot more than that.
Elijah's mother read the note, and the moment she realized who it was from, she just immediately started to
cry. Elijah's family had gone through a difficult year, with the deaths of four family members and his father
suffering a serious injury. Her gift changed their lives.

Being an active student also means asking for help. So I recommend you to visit your tutor during office hours and ask for their help or ask your peers to help explain stuff to you. Or get a mentor(导师)if you can.

The Electrochemical Eye(EC-Eye)developed at HKUST, however, may actually offer sharper vision than a human eye,可知,HKUST研发的EC-Eye实际上可能提供比人眼更敏锐的视觉。
The key feature allowing such breakthroughs is a 3D artificial retina(视网膜), made of nanowire light sensors which are like the photoreceptor in human retinas.
With further adjustment, the EC-Eye can be a self-powered image sensor, so there is no need for external power source, which will be much more user-friendly as compared with the current technology.
In the next step, we plan to further improve the performance of our device.
An international team led by scientists at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology(HKUST)has recently developed the world's first 3D artificial eye with capabilities that even outperform those of the human eyes, bringing vision to humanoid robots and new hope to patients with visual damage.

Dear Student Union,
I have just read an article on "Project Hope" in an English newspaper.
A girl named Xiao Juan was so poor that she couldn' t go to school. Project Hope made her wish of study come true. But do you know there are still thousands of children who cannot go to school? I think our Student Union could organize the students to raise money for a primary school in the local village, and give away some books and teaching equipment to it.
I hope the children there can get better education, and work for the village when they grow up . Best wishes!
