My Summer Holiday
The summer holiday is my favorite time of year! School is out, the weather is warm, and I have so much free time to do fun things. This past summer was one of the best yet. I got to go on a really cool trip with my family, had lots of fun times with my friends, and even learned some new skills. Let me tell you all about it!
In July, my parents surprised me and my little brother by taking us on a trip to Hainan Island. We had never been there before. Hainan is a tropical island off the southern coast of China. It's famous for having beautiful beaches with soft white sand and clear blue-green ocean water. The weather was so hot and humid, but that's perfect for swimming and other beach activities.
Our hotel was right on the beach, which was amazing. Every morning I would wake up, have breakfast, and then run straight down to the beach to play in the waves and build sandcastles. The ocean water was so refreshingly cool and relaxing. I loved
floating on my back and staring up at the bright sun rays peeking through the cottony clouds. My brother and I had a contest to see who could make the biggest sandcastle. His fell over after a while, but mine stayed up for two whole days before the tide washed it away!
In the afternoons, we would take breaks from the beach and do other fun activities. One day, we went on a glass-bottom boat tour to see the coral reefs and tropical fish. I had never seen anything like it before! The reefs looked like colorful underwater cities with towers and canyons, and the fish seemed like brightly decorated residents going about their daily activities. I saw clownfish swimming in and out of swaying anemones, angel fish gliding gracefully, and even a few sharks patrolling the deeper waters. It was almost like being in an aquarium, but better because it was their real homes we were observing.
Another day, we visited a reserve park for protected monkey species. We got to watch the monkeys climbing trees, playing, and caring for their babies. They were so entertaining and cheeky! One even snatched my mom's hairband right off her head. We all laughed as she had to firmly but gently retrieve it from the thieving primate. Watching the monkeys made me think how humans and monkeys really aren't that different in
some ways. We're both playful, social, and curious about the world around us.
Of course, no beach trip is complete without enjoying all the delicious seafood that Hainan is famous for. We had fresh grilled fish, shrimp, oysters, and more for lunch and dinner every day. My favorite was the Wenchang chicken rice soup, where
bite-sized pieces of chicken and flavorful broth are poured over a big bowl of steamed rice. It sounds simple but it was so comforting and tasty, especially after being out in the hot sun all day. I probably ate my weight in seafood and chicken rice that week!
When we returned home from our trip, I had barely a week before school started up again. I made sure to spend lots of quality time with my neighborhood friends before that. We rode our bikes to the park nearly every day to play basketball, climbed trees in each other's backyards, and had sleepovers watching movies and sharing snacks late into the night. My best friend and I spent one whole day just lounging around in my backyard playhouse, talking and laughing about all the silly things we did over the summer. Hanging out with my friends was the perfect way to fully enjoy those last refreshing days of true freedom.
In fact, I even managed to learn something new right before school started! My mom signed me up for a weeklong watercolor painting day camp. At first I thought it would be kind of boring, but it actually ended up being really cool. The teacher was this wacky older lady with bright colored hair and big round glasses. She had so much energy and made the classes really fun and relaxed. We learned different watercolor techniques like wet-on-wet, dry brushing, using masking tape to create patterns, and more.
By the end of the week, I had created my own little watercolor portfolio ranging from simple landscapes of trees and mountains, to detailed close-ups of flowers and bird feathers. My favorite piece was an abstract blend of colors that somehow came together into what looked like a brilliant sunset over an ocean. I felt prideful hanging my artwork up in my bedroom. Not only was it cool to learn a new creative skill, but it gave me a little hobby to work on for those inevitable rainy days once school and homework started piling up again.
Speaking of school, it finally came time to head back in late August. I had such an amazing summer filled with adventures, quality family time, friend bonding, and even productive learning. While I did feel a little sad to say goodbye to those lazy days of
sleeping in and staying up late, I also felt rejuvenated and ready to tackle a new school year. With recharged mental batteries and fun summer memories to look back on, I knew fourth grade was going to be a great experience. Bring it on!

My Life as a Fourth Grader
The start of a new school year always feels like a fresh beginning. Summer vacation was amazing - days spent playing outside with friends, sleepovers, trips to the beach or pool, and staying up late. But I was also excited to return to school and see my classmates again after the long break.
The first day back was a whirlwind of activity. Finding my new classroom, meeting my teacher Mr. Johnson, getting assigned a desk and cubby, and receiving all the new textbooks and supplies. Mr. Johnson seems really nice so far. He has a friendly smile and made jokes to help everyone feel comfortable on that anxious first day.
In 4th grade, we have to switch classes for different subjects now instead of staying in the same room all day like the lower grades. That makes me feel so grown up! I have my favorite classes like art and P.E., but I definitely don't love all of them.
Math is probably my least favorite because I find some of the concepts really challenging. Maybe that will change once we get further into the year.
One of the biggest adjustments has been having a locker for the first time. It's exciting to finally have my own personal locker to store things. But remembering the combination is tricky, and I've gotten stuck several times already unable to open it. I need to work on memorizing that number sequence. At least most of my friends have lockers nearby so we can help each other out.
In the cafeteria, there are no more assigned seats or class tables like in 3rd grade. We can sit wherever we want in the main lunch area. It's fun getting to choose a new spot each day, but it's also stressful trying to quickly find a place to sit with your friends before all the good tables fill up.
Recess remains one of the highlights of the day. Our playground has basketball courts, soccer fields, tetherball, and the classic swing set and jungle gym. You can always find me on the jungle gym playingrrumantic games like iri hiding pirates or royalty living in a castle. I have a childhood still left thankfully!
After school, many of my friends go to the aftercare program until their parents can pick them up from work. I'm lucky that my mom is able to come get me right at dismissal time. We've been
spending some afternoons going to the park near my house. I love playing on the swings and jungle gym there too.
One new aspect of 4th grade is that we can finally join the school's after-school activity clubs. I decided to join the art club because I love drawing, painting, and all sorts of crafting. We meet once a week and get to work on cool projects like
hand-made greeting cards, clay sculptures, and origami. I'm looking forward to seeing what other fun things we'll create.
Another exciting development this year is that I joined my first organized sports team. I'm now playing on a recreational soccer team through our community's parks and recreation department. We have practice twice a week, and games on Saturdays. I had never played soccer before so it's been a challenge learning all the rules and skills. But it's been really fun and rewarding too. My teammates are all nice, and I'm proud of myself for trying something new.
In my free time, I've been getting really into graphic novels and comic books. I love getting immersed in the story through the dialogue and vivid illustrations. Some of my current favorites are Dog Man, Sunny Side Up, and Invisible Emmie. I'll read for hours sprawled out on the couch or my bed. My parents have to
remind me to take screen breaks from staring at the pages so intensely!
Overall, 4th grade has been an exhilarating experience so far. While there are more rules, responsibilities, and academic challenges compared to earlier grades, there are also a lot more opportunities and freedoms too. I'm trying to soak up every moment because I know 5th grade and middle school will be here before I know it. For now, I'm making the most of my last year at this elementary school with my lifelong friends. We're soaking up this fleeting period of childhood while preparing for the next big milestones and changes heading our way soon enough.

My Favorite Season
I love all four seasons, but if I had to choose my absolute favorite, it would be summer. Summer is the best season for so many reasons!
First of all, the weather in summer is amazing. The temperatures are warm and sunny, perfect for spending lots of time outdoors. You can wear light, comfortable clothes like shorts and t-shirts without having to bundle up. The sun stays
out for many hours each day, giving you plenty of chances to soak up that pleasant warmth and vitamin D. Compared to the freezing cold of winter or the rain of spring, summer's mild heat is just right.
Another reason I adore summer is because of all the fun activities you can do. School is out, so there's no more homework or tests to worry about for a couple of months. That means more free time to play outside with friends until the streetlights come on. We have epic water balloon fights and run through the sprinklers to stay cool. The local pool is open for swimming too. Some of my best childhood memories are from summers spent riding bikes, having picnics, and just generally being carefree kids.
Speaking of food, summer has the most delicious foods and drinks of the year. Juicy watermelons, popsicles, ice cream cones, lemonade...just thinking about those refreshing summer treats makes me happy. There are also lots of opportunities for cookouts and making s'mores around the campfire. The fresh fruits and vegetables from farms and gardens are at their peak as well. Everything just tastes better in the summer!
While I try to keep learning over summer break by reading books and practicing skills, summer is still a nice break from the
hard work of the school year. I get to sleep in a bit later without an early wake-up call for classes. My days have much more unstructured free time to just relax, explore outside, or pick up a new hobby. Not having the usual routine gives my brain a rest so I can return to studying recharged in the fall.
Of course, summer also means summer vacation! Whether it's a quick family road trip or a longer travel adventure, getting away from the familiar surroundings is incredibly exciting. Visiting new places exposes you to different cultures, foods, and experiences you could never have at home. It creates memories you'll cherish forever. Simply Put, very few things beat winding down in the evening after a fun-filled summer day.
Summer may sometimes feel like it goes by too quickly. However, I try to soak up every moment: staying up late to stargaze, going on camping trips, running around catching fireflies in a jar, the list goes on. I make the most of those long sunny days knowing the cooler seasons will return before I know it. When summer eventually does come to an end, at least I have those joyful memories to look back on and the prospect of it coming around again soon.
In conclusion, summer is unmistakably the most wonderful time of the year for a kid. From the fantastic weather and
activities to the vacations and delicious foods, what's not to love?
I anxiously await summer's arrival each year and make sure to take full advantage of those amazing few months. They're some of the most cherished days of childhood.。
