(建议用时:100分钟;分数:120分)

In 1997, I found myself in a situation I never thought I’d be in: alone and begging for money in New York. My father had been separated from our family, and my mother had recently died of a disease related to AIDS. What I remember most about such nights is lying on the cold stone floor and using my backpack for a pillow.
Even though I had lost my family, I made choices every single day to turn my life around. There was the haven (避难所) for homeless teenagers called the Door, a nonprofit (非营利的) organization that provided me with guidance, medical care and food, all of which kept me going while I completed my homework in train stations and under hallway lights. Perhaps it was the most surprising help because I did not seek out—it found me. The Ne w York Times told my story.
In the weeks that followed, dozens of strangers reached out to me
from all across the United States. At my high school, I began receiving handwritten letters of encouragement. Strangers showed up bearing clothes, books, and even hugs. Since 'the article mentioned I was applying to Harvard, one woman knitted (编织) a blanket for me. She put this note in the box it was posted in: “It gets cold in those dorms. May you warm yourself knowing that people care about you.”
With the help of these people, my life today is not like at all my life then. I graduated not only from high school but also from Harvard University.
Before these people—some of them nameless—I just didn’t realize how good people could be. But now I do, and I can say that the people who helped me have forever changed me. They are the reason behind my decision to join the board at the Door so that I can be part of a small team of people opening a high school for homeless teenagers. They are the reason I dedicate my life to opening pathways for others. And they are the reason I travel around the world helping people change their own lives.

Researchers have found out what people really do online—a quarter
of their time is spent on social networking sites. The study analyzed(分析) the behavior of 25 million Internet users worldwide, and found social networking, entertainment and shopping were the most popular ways of killing time.
The UK was revealed as the Internet’s most popular online shopping nation, defeating North America and Australia.British Internet users spent 10 percent of all time online shopping in 2012,compared to nine percent in the US and six percent in Australia. This was partly because of a good Christmas season in the UK where 370 million hours were spent shopping online,24 percent higher than the monthly average.
The study also revealed Americans are the biggest social media lovers. In the UK,13 minutes out of every hour online are spent on social networking and forums(论坛),nine minutes on entertainment sites and six minutes on shopping. In North America, figures(数据)are similar—16 minutes are spent on social media in the US,nine minutes on entertainment and five minutes on shopping.Australian Internet users spend 14 minutes on social sites, nine on entertainment and four minutes shopping online.
More and more people began to read news.Australian users were regarded as the most consumers of news online.Six percent of all time spent online in Australia in 2012 was on news websites, and it was five percent in the UK and four percent in the US.
The online situation is changing greatly. There are some changes in users’behavior across different places and markets.People are changing the way they communicate online such as the rise of 3G and 4G mobile Internet service and so on.

One day,a young man was cleaning out his late grandfather’s belongings when he came across a bright red envelope.Written on the
front were the words,“To my grandson.”Recognizing his grandfather’s handwriting, the young man opened the envelope.A letter inside read:Dear Ronny,
Years ago you came to me for help. You said,“Grandpa, how is it that you’ve accomplished so much in your life? You’re still full of energy, and I’m already tired of struggling. How can I get that same enthusiasm that you’ve got?”
I didn’t know what to say to you then.But_knowing_my_days_are_numbered,I figure that I owe you an answer. So here is what I believe.
I think a lot of it has to do with how a person looks at things.I call i t“keeping your eyes wide open”.
When you meet up with challenges, welcome them. They’ll leave you wiser, stronger, and more capable than you were the day before. When you make a mistake,be grateful for the things it taught you.Resolve to use that lesson to help you reach your goals.
And always follow the rules, even the little ones. When you follow the rules, life works. If you think you ever really get by with breaking the rules, you’re only fooling yourself.
It’s also important to decide exactly what you want. Then keep your mind focused on it,and be prepared to receive it.
But be ready to end up in some new places, too. As you grow with
the years, you’ll be given bigger shoes to fill.So be ready for endings as well as challenging beginnings.
Sometimes we have to be brave enough to move from the familiar to the unfamiliar.Life isn’t just reaching peaks.Part of it is moving from one peak to the next.If you rest too long in between, you might be tempted to quit.Leave the past in the past.Climb the next mountain and enjoy the view.
Remember that your choices will create your successes and your failures. So consider all the pathways ahead, and decide which ones to follow. Then believe in yourself, get up,and get going.
And be sure to take breaks once in a while. They’ll give you a renewed commitment to your dreams and a cheerful, healthy perception of the things that matter the most of you.
Most important of all, never give up on yourself. The person that ends up a winner is the one who resolves to win.Give life everything you’ve got,and life will give its best back to you.
Love always,
Grandpa

American scientists have for the first time taken stem cells(干细胞)from human embryos(胚胎)that are genetic copies(基因复制)of living people. The goal is to create better treatments for disease. But the work has led to heated discussions about making genetic copies or cloning.
Cloning a human being is not allowed in more than twelve states in America. Most scientists are against it,but some medical researchers are performing what is called “therapeutic cloning”to try to fight disease.Still, that method is not allowed in seven states.
One state where “therapeutic cloning”is allowed is Oregon. That is
where researchers at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland were able to put human DNA into human eggs. They produced embryos that were genetically the same as those produced by people who had given their DNA to the research project. The researchers then took stem cells from the emb ryos. These cells are called “master cells”.Scientists know how to use chemicals to cause master cells to develop into any tissue in the body.
The idea is that doctors could use tissues(组织)created in this way to replace diseased organs. The new part would be a genetic match of the person who receives it,and there would be no danger that the sick person’s body would not accept the new part.
Alta Charo,a researcher at the University of Wisconsin Law School, believes it is too soon to say whether the use of embryonic stem cells for personalized medicine would become common.Scientists could in fact find other less questionable sources of stem cells. However, she supports the use of stem cells to treat disease.
12.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.America is the first country that has taken stem cells from embryos.
B.Everyone supports the idea of making genetic copies.
C.Stem cells can be used in medical treatment.
D.Human embryos are taken from stem cells.

Dear Peter,
I’m writing this letter to thank you for your warm hospitality during my visit in Canada.I really had a great time staying at your home.
I was also wondering if you could do me a favor.I left in such a hurry that a very important present I bought for a friend of mine was left behind in the room where I stayed. It is packed in a small blue box and probably on the top of the bookshelf. It would be very kind of you to mail it to me as soon as possible.I hope you can come to China to visit me during the Spring Festival, the most traditional holiday in China which would be the best time to enjoy.
Thank you for your kindness again and I am looking forward to your visit to China.
Best wishes!
Yours sincerely,
Li Ming 沁园春·雪 <毛泽东>
北国风光,千里冰封,万里雪飘。

望长城内外,惟余莽莽;
大河上下,顿失滔滔。

山舞银蛇,原驰蜡象,
欲与天公试比高。

须晴日,看红装素裹,分外妖娆。

江山如此多娇,引无数英雄竞折腰。

惜秦皇汉武,略输文采;
