听力原文:For most of us, success and the ability to control our own fate are linked to our ability to lead. Leadership, in fact, is something that concerns everyone. A leader does not necessarily occupy a formal leadership position, for example, as the assistant secretary of state or the chief executive officer. Very often people with leadership titles are not necessarily leaders. Parents, spouses, teammates, colleagues, friends, classmates or playmates can all be leaders if they so desire. A teacher can also be as a leader as he or she is a friend. In fact, most of us spend a great deal of time trying to get other people to do willingly what we want them to do, and that, in the purest sense of the term, is what leadership is all about. Of course, we can force people to do things for a short period of time, but that is not leadership. A true leader is apt to persuade and influence other people to accept his ideas, to follow him and to take action. So, what is the essence of leadership? Basically, what is required of a true leader? It is communication. Without communication, leadership does not exist. It is impossible to get someone to do something without verbal or nonverbal communication. We rely on communication to manage and motivate. We use communication to resolve conflict and facilitate innovation as well as to negotiate. We may expect our leader to be frank, direct, and to the point. We may also expect that our ideal leader listens, is willing to talk, is open to discussion and constructive suggestions, is receptive to new ideas, and is supportive. But, in most social interactions and economic activities, an ideal and recognized leader invariably emerges as the most competent communicator.

听力原文:By the mid-nineteenth century, the term “icebox” had entered the American language, but ice was still only beginning to affect the diet of ordinary citizens in the United States. The ice trade grew with the growth of cities. Ice was used in hotels, taverns, and hospitals, and by some forward-looking city dealers in fresh meat, fresh fish, and butter. After the Civil War (1861- 1865), as ice was used to refrigerate freight cars, it also came into household use. Even before 1880, half of the ice sold in New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, and one-third of that sold in Boston and Chicago, went to families for their own use. This had become possible because a new household convenience, the icebox -- a precursor of the modem refrigerator, had been invented. Making an efficient icebox was not as easy as we might now suppose. In the early nineteenth century, the knowledge of the physics of heat, which was essential to a science of refrigeration, was rudimentary. The common sense notion that the best icebox was one that prevented the ice from melting was of course mistaken, for it was the melting of the ice that performed the cooling. Nevertheless, early efforts to economize ice included wrapping up the ice in blankets, which kept the ice from doing its job. Not until near the end of the nineteenth century did inventors achieve the delicate balance of insulation and circulation needed for an efficient icebox. But as early as 1803, an ingenious Maryland farmer, Thomas Moore, had been on the right track. He owned a farm about twenty miles outside the city of Washington, for which the village of Georgetown was the market center. When
he used an icebox of his own design to transport his butter to market, he found that customers would pass up the rapidly melting stuff in the tubs of his competitors to pay a premium price for his butter, still fresh and hard in neat, one-pound bricks. One advantage of his icebox, Moore explained, was that farmers would no longer have to travel to market at night in order to keep their produce cool.

听力原文:I’d like to say a few words about the organizational structure of Lampell. Now, if you look at the chart you will see that the Managing Director, that is Mr. Bruce, is responsible for running the company and is accountable to the Board. Now, he is assisted by four executive departments. These are Human Resources, which is responsible for personnel, training and management development; then there’s the Finance Department, which takes care of corporate finance and accounting; next we have the Management Services Department, led by Peter Collins, who is in charge of rationalization throughout the company; and finally, there is the R&D Department research and development -- which works closely with the five regions on new product development. So this then brings me on to the regions. Directly under the Managing Director, there are five Regional Managers. Each of them is responsible for the day-to-day management of a territory, these are geographically split into north, south, east, west and central regions. Now then, the five regions are supported by two sections -- Marketing and Technical Services. They are organized on a matrix basis with section leaders accountable to the Regional Managers. They work closely with the regions on the marketing and technical side. Now, in addition to the parent company, Lampell has three subsidiaries, namely Lampell France, Germany and Japan. 听力原文:Most taxpayers have had enough income tax collected by their employers during the year. So they do not owe any more money. In fact, most Americans get some money back. Last year, the Internal Revenue Service returned at least some money to more than one hundred million Americans paying individual income tax. The United States has what is called a progressive tax system. Tax rates increase as earnings increase. This year, people earning more than three hundred twenty-six thousand dollars are taxed at the highest rate. Earnings above that amount are taxed at thirty-five percent. Earnings below that amount are taxed at lower rates. Individuals who earn less than seven thousand three hundred dollars pay no income tax. But they do pay Social Security, Medicare and other taxes. There are many different ways for people and businesses to reduce their federal income taxes. Most homeowners, for example, can reduce their taxes a little by reporting to the I.R.S. the interest they pay on a home loan. This is called a tax deduction. In two thousand four, personal income taxes provided the government with most of its money: thirty-five percent of the budget. Social security and other retirement taxes provided thirty-two percent. Other forms of income include business income taxes, money borrowed to cover the deficit and special taxes on trade and property. But income from taxes did not provide enough to pay for government spending. The I.R.S. says the budget deficit for two thousand four was about four hundred million dollars. Preparing tax documents can be complex. The I.R.S. estimates that taxpayers need an average of about thirteen hours to prepare tax documents. And that is just for the basic tax form. For businesses, the I.R.S. estimates an average tax preparer needs more than fifty hours. This is why a lot of Americans pay professional tax preparers to complete their tax documents for them.

听力原文:Today I’d like to talk about love between child and parent. For most children before the age from eight and a half to ten, the problem is almost exclusively that of being loved of being loved for what one is. The child up to this age does not yet love; he responds gratefully and joyfully to being loved. At this point of the child’s development a new factor enters into the picture: that of producing love by one’s own activity. For the first time, the child thinks of giving something to mother or to father. For the first time in the child’s life the idea of love is changed from being loved into loving, into creating love. It takes many years from this first beginning to the maturing of love. Eventually the child may now be an adolescent and has overcome his ego-centricity i the other person is not any more primarily a means to the satisfaction of his own needs. The needs of the other person are as important as his own in fact, they have become more important. To give has become more satisfactory and more joyous than to receive; to love has become more important even than being loved. Closely related to development of the capacity of love is the development of the object of love. The first months and years of the child are those where his closest attachment is to the mother. This attachment begins before the moment of birth, when mother and child are still one, although they are two. Although the child is now living outside of the womb, he is still completely dependent on mother. But he becomes more independent day by day: he learns to walk, to talk and to explore the world on his own; the relationship to mother loses some of its vital significance, and instead the relationship to father becomes more and more important. In order to understand this shift from mother to father, we must consider the essential differences in quality between motherly and fatherly love. We have already spoken about motherly love. Motherly love by its very nature is unconditional. Mother loves the new-born infant because it is her child, not because the child has fulfilled any specific condition, or rived up to any specific expectation. The relationship to father is quite different. Mother is the home we come from, She is nature, soil, the ocean; father does not represent any such natural home, he has little connection with the child in the first years of its life, and his importance for the child in this period cannot be compared with that of mother. But while father does not represent the natural world, he represents the other pole of human existence. He represents the world of thought, of law and order, of discipline, and of travel and adventure. Father is the one who teaches the child, who shows him the road into the world. Closely related to this function is one which is connected with socio-economic development. When private property came into existence, and when private property, could be inherited by one of the sons, father began to look for that son to whom he could leave his property. Naturally, that was the one whom father thought best fitted to become his successor,
the son who was most like him and consequently whom he likes the most. Fatherly love is conditional love. Its principle is “I love you because you fulfill my expectations, because you do your duty, because you are like me.”In conditional fatherly love we find a negative and a positive aspect. The negative aspect is the very fact that fatherly love has to be deserved; that it can be lost if one does not do what is expected. In the nature of fatherly love lies the fact that obedience becomes the main virtue; that disobedience is the main sin, and its punishment is the withdrawal of fatherly love.
56.Listen to the following passage. Write a short summary of 150 to 200 words of what you have heard. You may need to take some notes while you’re listening. This part of the test carries 30 points. You will hear the passage only once.

Father represents the world of thought, of law and order, of discipline, and of travel and adventure instead of the natural world. Besides, the social-economic development contributes to the conditional fatherly love. Fatherly love can be lost if one does not do what is expected.。
