16、A few years ago, I worked at a church(教堂). Since my son was home schooling, he went with me to the church every day. Most mornings, we’d stop at a local store, and get a chocolate drink for him and a cup of coffee for me.
The clerk(店员) at the store made our lives more enjoyable each day, and so we returned again and again. She had found her own way of enjoying life and her job. I’m not even sure if she realized that her warmth and brightness put a smile upon the face of each customer(顾客).
When a customer brought cakes to the counter, any other clerk could have asked: “Would you like some milk with those cakes?” Instead, she asked: “Would you like a lottery ticket(彩票) with those cakes?”
She might have asked me if I wante d sugar with my coffee. But instead, she asked: “Would you like some batteries(电池) with that coffee?”
Yes, life is what you make of it. This clerk’s method of dealing with what some think is a boring job, and with the customers she met daily, made the hours in her day more enjoyable. In doing that, she also refreshed the lives of others and made them laugh.
Sometimes, if my day at the church had been very tiring, we’d stop at that store before going home. We’d giggle (咯咯笑) as we left the store, the clerk’s words echoing (回响) behind us.
“Would you like some shampoo (洗发香波) with that orange juice?”
1.Why did the writer and her son return to the store again and again?
A.Because the drinks were delicious there.
B.Because the food was cheap there.

17、Language changes all the time. New words and phrases appear and grow. The words and pronunciations used by young people in the UK can be very different from those used by adults Living in a multi (多元的)-cultural society has an effect on language, especially on young people, whose friends are often from a mix of backgrounds. TV and music also influence the language of the young.
Young British people use lots of language that you usually can't find in most dictionaries. These very informal(不正规的) words and expressions are known as “slang”. It is not possible to make a complete list of modern British slang. By the time the list was finished, it would be out of date! However, here are a few examples:
◆“Safe”,“ sorted”;“ sound”,“cool” and “wicked” all mean “That' s good" or “I understand”.
◆“Whatever ”means “I don’t care”.(e.g. A: But the teacher says we can't leave until we've finish ed. B: Whatever. I'm going)
◆“He's fine". And “He's fit ” both mean “He's good-looking”. Fine and fit can describe a boy or a girl.
Not everybody uses slang and not everybody likes it. A school in Sheffield, has recently required its pupils to stop using slang words such as hiya (hello), cheers and ta(both mean “thank you "). The head teacher says that If young people learn to speak“correctly”, this will help them get a place at university and a good job。

So, how important is it to learn these slang words and expressions? If you watch films or TV in English, read magazines in English, chat online in English or are interested in English song lyrics, then understanding slang can be very useful. You probably won't see much slang in your English exam, though.

18、I used to watch him from my kitchen window. He seemed so small as he played through a crowd of tall boys on the playground. The school was across the street from our home and I would
often watch the kids as they played during break.
I remember the first day when I saw him playing basketball. He ran circles around the other kids. He managed to shoot jump shots from their heads and into the net. The big boys always tried to stop him but no one could.
One day, I met him and asked him why he practiced so much. Without a moment of hesitation he said, "I want to go to college. The only way I can go is to get a scholarship. I am going to play college basketball. I want to be the best. My daddy told me if the dream is big enough, the facts don't count.
I watched him through those junior high school and into senior high school. Every week, he led his school team to victory
One day in his senior year, I saw him sitting in the grass with head in his arms. I walked across the street and sat down in the cool grass beside him. Quietly I asked what was wrong. "Oh, nothing," came a soft reply, "I am just too short." The coach told him that he would probably never get to play for a top ranked team-much less offered a scholarship. So she should stop dreaming about college.
He was heartbroken and I felt my own throat tighten as I sensed his disappointment. I asked him if he had talked to his dad about it yet. He told me that his father said those coaches were wrong. They just did not understand the power of a dream. He told him that if he truly wanted a scholarship and that nothing could stop him except one thing-his own attitude. He told him again, “If the dream is big enough, the facts don’t count.”
The next year, as he and his team went to the Northern California Championship game, he was offered a scholarship. Finally, he was going to get the college education that she had dreamed of.
