Why did M. Hamel say “ French is the most beautiful language in the world”? and what is the theme?
When little Franz couldn’t answer the questions, M. Hamel said nothing. The last sentence said by M. Hamel in the class was “School is dismissed-you may go”.
Usually, the school was quiet on Sunday morning. Through the window, little Franz saw M. Hamel walking with his iron ruler and in his beautiful green coat. Little Franz was sorry for wasting so much time.
Alphonse Daudet (1840-1897) is a French novelist and short story writer. He wrote his first book at the age of 14. When the Franco-Prussian War broke out, he joined the army. So in his works we can see the description of the war. His funniest and most read book appeared in 1871, under the title of Tartarin de Tarascon. His works include: Women in Love(1857), Letters from My Mill(1866), Le Petit Chose(1868) ,Fromont the Younger and Risler the Elder(1874),etc.
The Franco-Prussian War(1870-1871) was provoked by Otto von Bismarck(the Prussian chancellor) as part of his plan to create a unified German Empire. In the preliminary peace agreement, France agreed to pay an indemnity of $1 billion within three years. Alsace, except the Territory of Belfort, and a large part of Lorraine were ceded to Germany. This article was finished in 1873 and it was set in the tense time. It reflects the grief and patriotism.
