Part II Reading Comprehension (40 marks)
Section A
Directions: For questions 18 to 25, read the following passage and choose the best answer to each question. Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.
Fewer judgment areas in the brain may explain why some people are good-natured, according to a new study. Researchers from the University of Cambridge found that volunteers who react more strongly to pleasant pictures show less activity in a network of brain areas that usually light up, or "activate," when you make moral judgments. People who are good-natured have long been known to act differently when faced with moral dilemmas. They tend to show a greater tendency to be fair to strangers, for example.
"Being good-natured is a default response for people, so it might lead them to do good, even if it requires some inner conflict," says Dr Molly Crockett from the Department of Psychology. "We were interested in finding out how this simple change in their nervous system might influence their behaviour." To find out, Dr Crockett and her research team asked 28 healthy volunteers to take part in a simple reaction-time task in front of a computer. When the volunteers saw a green square, they were told to press a button as quickly as possible, and they were given a small financial reward for doing so. When they saw a red square, they were told not to press the button at all, and they would be penalized if they did.
As the volunteers watched the squares, they were also shown pictures of pleasant scenes that some people do not find pleasant at all, such as children playing and puppies being adorable. The volunteers picked the second task because some psychologists believe that the images require the brain to make moral judgments about the scenes. As they did this, the volunteers' brain became active in a set of areas known to light up when moral decisions are made. This includes the lateral prefrontal cortex and the temporal poles.
