中石油职称英语考试阅读练习English is a Crazy Language1.Let's face it-English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England nor French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.1.

2. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we findthatquicksand can work slowly, boxingrings are square and aguinea pig isneitherfrom Guinea nor is it a pig. ( nor引导的倒装句) Andwhyit is thatwriters writebutfingers don't finge, grocers don't groce and hammers don'tham?Iftheplural of tooth is teeth, why isn'tthe plural ofbooth beeth?Ifyou have one goose, two geese, why notone moose, twomeese, or one index, two indices?2.

For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark your answer on the Answer Sheet.Questions 51 to 54 are based on the following passage:According to the dictionary definition of "create", ordinary people are creative every day. To create means "to bring into being, to cause to exist"--something each of us does daily. We are creative whenever we look at or think about something in a new way. First this involves an awareness of our surroundings. It means using all of our sense to become aware of our world. This may be as simple as being aware of color and texture, as well as taste, when we plan a meal. Above all, it is the ability to notice things that others might miss.A second part of creativity is an ability to see relationships among things. If we believe the expression, "There is nothing new under the sun," the creativity is remaking or recombining the old in new ways. For example, we might do this by finding a more effective way to study or a better way to arrange our furniture, or we might make a new combination of camera lenses and filters to create an unusual photograph.A third part of creativity is the courage and drive to make use of our new ideas, to apply them to achieve some new results. To think up a new concept is one thing; to put the idea to work is another. These three parts of creativity are involved in all the great works of genius, but they are also involved in many of our day to day activities.51. The author holds thatA. creativity is of highly demandB. creativity is connected with a deep insight to some extentC. creativity is to create something new and concreteD. to practise and practise is the only way to cultivate one's creativity52. What does the author think about the relationship between a new thought and its being put into practice?A. It's more difficult to create a new thought than to apply it in practice.B. To find a new thought will definitely lead to the production of a new thing.C. One may come up with a new thought, but can not put it into practice.D. A man with an excellent ability of practice can easily become an inventor.54. The best title for this passage is __A. How to Cultivate One's CreativityB. What is CreativityC. The Importance of CreativityD. Creativity--a Not Farway ThingQuestions 55 to 58 are based on the following passage:Born in 1830 in rural Amherst, Massachusetts, Emily Dickinson spent her entire life in the household of her parents. Between 1858 and 1862, it was later discovered, she wrote like a person possessed, often producing a poem a day. It was also during this period that her life was transformed into the myth of Amherst. Withdrawing more and more, keeping to her room, sometimes even refusing to see visitors who called, she began to dress only in white--a habit that added to her reputation as an eccentric. In their determination to read Dickinson's life in terms of a traditional romantic plot, biographers have missed the unique pattern of her life--her struggle to create a female life not yet imagined by the culture in which she lived. Dickinson was not the innocent, lovelorn and emotionally fragile girl sentimentalized by the Dickinson myth and popularized by William Luce's 1976 play, the Belle of Amherst. Her decision to shut the door on Amherst society in the 1850's transformed her house into a kind of magical realm in which she was free to engage her poetic genius. Her seclusion was not the result of a failed love affair, but rather a part of a more general pattern of renunciation through which she, in her quest for self sovereignty, carried on an argument with the puritan fathers, attacking with wit and irony their cheerless Calvinist doctrine, their stem patriarchal God, and their rigid notions of "true womanhood".55. What's the author's main purpose in the passage?A. To interpret Emily Dickinson's eccentric behavior.B. To promote the popular myth of Emily Dickinson.C. To discuss Emily Dickinson's failed love affair.D. To describe the religious climate in Emily Dickinson's time.56. Which of the following is not mentioned as being one of Emily Dickinson's eccentricities?A. Refusing to eat.B. Wearing only white.C. Avoiding visitors.D. Staying in her room.57. The author implies that many people attribute Emily Dickinson's seclusion to __A. physical illnessB. a failed love affairC. religious fervorD. her dislike of people58. It can be inferred from the passage that Emily Dickinson lived in a society that wascharacterized by __A. strong Puritan beliefsB. equality of men and womenC. the encouragement of nonconformityD. the appreciation of poetic creativityQuestions 59 to 62 are based on the following passage:Once upon a time, the United States seemed to have plenty of land to go around. Plenty of rivers to dam and plenty of rural valleys left over. Plenty of space for parks and factories. Plenty of forests to cut and grasslands to pl0w. But that was once upon a time.. The days of unused land are over. Now the land has been spoken for, fenced off, carved up into cities and farms andindustrial parks, put to use.At the same time, the population keeps growing. People need places to work and places to play. So we need more sites for more industries, more beaches for more sunbathers, and more clean rivers for more fishers. And it isn't just a matter of population growth. Our modem technology has needs that must be met, too. We need more coal for energy, and we need more power plants; cars must have highways and parking lots, and jets must have airports. Each of these land uses swallows up precious space. Highways and expressways alone take some 200,000 acres each year. And urban sprawl -- the spreading out of cities -- is expected to gobble up vast areas of land by the year 2,000. But there is only so much land to go around. It is always hard to decide. Take, for example, a forest. A forest can be a timber supply. It can provide a home for wildlife. It is scenery and a recreation area for man. It is soil and watershed protection.59. "...the United States seemed to have plenty of land to go around" means that __A. the United States seemed to have vast land for its people to walk aroundB. the United States seemed to have enough land for sharing with everyoneC. the United States could provide whatever its inhabitents' needsD. the United States was not able to allow its people to do what they wanted to60. The sentence of "Plenty of rivers to dam and plenty of rural valleys left over" suggests thatA, the United States had a lot of rivers to dam and many rural valleys, tooB. the rivers could be dammed laterC. rural valleys would be considered in the futureD. people needn't think of the rivers and valleys61. "Now the land has been spoken for, ..." tells us that __A. today, land has shown its valuesB. now, people have said something about landC. nowadays, land has been claimed by human beingsD. recently, people spoke for the land62. The word "sprawl" indicates thatA. cities are developing very fast to meet the people's demandsB. urban areas are diminishing smoothlyC. urban areas are enlarging steadily in a planned wayD. cities are spreading out without any plansQuestions 63 to 66 are based on the following passage:Social change is more likely to occur in societies where there is a mixture of different kindsof people than in societies where people are similar in many ways. The simple reason for this is that there are more different ways of looking at things present in the first kind of society. There are more ideas, more disagreements in interest, and more groups and organizations with different beliefs. In addition, there is usually a greater worldly interest and greater tolerance in mixed societies. All these factors tend to promote social change by opening more areas of life to decision. In a society where people are quite similar in many ways, there are fewer occasions for people to see the need or the opportunity for change because everything seems to be the same. And although conditions may not be satisfactory, they are at least customary and undisputed.Within a society, social change is also likely to occur more frequently and more readily in the material aspects of the culture than in the non material, for example, in technology rather than in values; in what has been learned later in life rather than what was learned early; in the less basicand less emotional aspects of society than in their opposites; in the simple elements rather than in the complex ones; in form rather than in substance; and in elements that are acceptable to the culture rather than in strange elements.Furthermore, social change is easier if it is gradual. For example, it comes more readily in human relations on a continuous scale rather than one with sharp dichotomies (一分为二). This is one reason why change has not come more quickly to Black Americans as compared to other American minorities, because of the sharp difference in appearance between them and their white counterparts.63. What kind of society tends to promote social changes?A. A society where people are similar in many ways.B. A society where there are only white people.C. A society where there are only black people.D. A society where there is a mixture of different kinds of people.64. Which of the following is not true, according to the passage?A. Social change is more likely to occur in the material aspect of society.B. Social change is less likely to occur in what people learned when they were old.C. Disagreement with and argument about conditions tend to promote social change.D. Social change tends to meet with more difficulty in basic and emotional aspects of society.65. Social change is less likely to occur in a society where people are quite similar in many ways becauseA. people there are easy to pleaseB. people there are less argumentaryC. people there have got so accustomed to their conditions that they seldom think itnecessary to changeD. people there have same needs that can be satisfied without much difficulty66. The passage is mainly discussingA. two different societiesB. certain factors that determine the case with which social change occursC. the necessity of social changeD. the significance of social changeSection BDirections: You should answer questions 67-75 which are based on the following passages. Mark your answer on the answer sheet.Tidal PowerUndersea turbines which produce electricity from the tides are set to become an important source of renewable energy for Britain. It is still too early to predict the extent of the impact they may have, but all the signs are that they will play a significant role in the future.A Operating on the same principle as wind turbines, the power in sea turbines comes from tidal currentswhich turn blades similar to ships’ propellers, but, unlike wind, the tides are predictable and the power input is constant. The technology raises the prospect of Britain becoming self-sufficient in renewable energy and drastically reducing its carbon dioxide emissions. If tide, wind and wave power are all developed, Britain would be able to close gas, coal and nuclear power plants and export renewable power to other parts of Europe. Unlike wind power, which Britain originally developed and then abandoned for 20 years allowing the Dutch to make it a major industry, undersea turbines could become a big export earner to island nations such as Japan and New Zealand.B Tidal sites have already been identified that will produce one sixth or more of the UK’spower ? and at prices competitive with modem gas turbines and undercutting those of the already ailing nuclear industry. One site alone, the Pentland Firth, between Orkney and mainlandScotland, could produce 10% of the country's electricity with banks of turbines under the sea, and another at Ald erney in the Channel Islands three times the 1,200 megawatts of Britain’s largest and newest nuclear plant, Sizewell B,in Suffolk. Other sitesidentified include the Bristol Channel and the west coast of Scotland, particularly the channel between Campbeltown and Northern Ireland.C Work on designs for the new turbine blades and sites are well advanced at the University ofSouthampton’s sustainable energy research group. The first station is expected to be installed off Lynmouth in Devon shortly to test the technology in a venture jointly funded by the department of Trade and Industry and the European Union. AbuBakr Bahaj, in charge of the Southampton research, said: “The prospects for energy from tidal currents are far better than from wind because the flows of water are predictable and constant. The technology for dealing with the hostile saline environment under the sea has been developed in the North Sea oil industry and much is already known about turbine blade design, because of wind power and ship propellers. There are a few technical difficulties, but I believe in the next five to ten years wc will be installing commercial marine turbine farms.” Southampton has been awarded £215,000 over three years to develop the turbines and is working with Marine Current Turbines, a subsidiary of IT power, on the Lynmouth project. EU research has now identified 106 potential sites for tidal power, 80% round the coasts of Britain. The best sites are between islands or around heavily indented coasts where there are strong tidal currents.D A marine turbine blade needs to be only one third of the size of a wind generator to produce threetimes as much power. The blades will be about 20 meters in diameter, so around 30 metres of water is required. Unlike wind power, there are unlikely to be environmental objections. Fish and other creatures are thought unlikely to be at risk from the relatively slow-turning blades. Each turbine will be mounted on a tower which will connect to the national power supply grid via underwater cables. The towers will stick out of the water and be lit, to warn shipping, and also be designed to be lifted out of the water for maintenance and to clean seaweed from the blades.E Dr Bahaj has done most work on the Alderney site, where there arc powerful currents. The singleundersea turbine farm would produce far more power than needed for the Channel Islands and most would be fed into the French Grid and be re-imported into Britain via the cable under the Channel.F One technical difficulty is cavitation, where low pressure behind a turning blade causes airbubbles. These can cause vibration and damage the blades of the turbines. Dr Bahaj said: “We have to test a number of blade types to avoid this happening or at least make sure it does not damage the turbines or reduce performance. Another slight concern is submerged debris floating into the blades. So far we do not know how much of a problem it might be. We will have tomake the turbines robust because the sea is a hostile environment, but all the signs that we can do it are good.”Questions 67-70This passage has six paragraphs, A-F. Which paragraph contains the following information? Choose the correct letter, A-F, for questions 67-70 and mark your choice on the answer sheet.NB You may use any letter more than once.67. the location of the first test site68. a way of bringing the power produced on one site back into Britain69. a reference to a previous attempt by Britain to find an alternative source of energy70. mention of the possibility of applying technology from another industryQuestions 71-75Do the following statements agree with the views of the writer in this passage? For questions 71-75, chooseA. if the statement agrees with the views of the writer (YES)B. if the statement contradicts the views of the writer (NO)C. if it is impossible to say what the writer thinks about this (NOT GIVEN)71. 第三部分UNIT 1 Composition of Petroleum石油的组成Petroleum or crude oil is a naturally occurring, toxic, flammable liquid consisting of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons of various molecular weights, and other organic compounds, that are found in geologic formation s beneath the Earth’s surface.. Petroleum is recovered mostly through oil drilling. It is refined and separated, most easily by boiling point, into a large number of consumer products, from gasoline and kerosene to asphalt and chemical reagent s used to make plastics and pharmaceutical s.

In its strictest sense, petroleum includes only crude oil, but in common usage it includes both crude oil and natural gas. Both crude oil and natural gas are predominantly a mixture of hydrocarbons. Under surface pressure and temperature conditions, the lighter hydrocarbons methane, ethane, propane and butane occur as gases, while the heavier ones from pentane and up are in the form of liquids or solids. However in the underground oil reservoir the proportion of gas and liquid varies depending on the subsurface conditions, and on the phase diagram of the petroleum mixture.严格意义上说,石油仅仅包含原油,但是在惯用法上,它包含石油和天然气。

Nor did it spring into being overnight. It developed gradually, over a long period, from the ideas of many people - each one building on the work of their predecessors’.The process began in 1873, when it was accidentally discovered that the electrical resistance of the element selenium硒() varied in proportion to the intensity of the light shining on it. Scientists quickly recognized that this provided a way of transforming light variations into electrical signals. Almost immediately a number of schemes were proposed for sending pictures by wire (it was, of course, before radio). One of the earliest of these schemes was patterned on the human eye. Suggestedby G. R. Carey in 1875. It envisioned ( 想像,展望 ) a mosaic (感光嵌镶幕 ) of selenium cells on which the picture to be transmitted would be focused by a lens system. At the receiving end there would be a similarly arranged mosaic made up of electric lights. Each selenium cell would be connected by an individual wire to the similarly placed light in the receiving mosaic. Light falling on the seleniumcell would cause the associated electric light to shine in proportion. Thus the mosaic of lights would reproduce the original pictures, Had the necessaryamplifiers( 放大器 )and the right kind of lights been available this system would have worked. But it also would have required an impractical number of connecting wires. Carey recognized this and in a second scheme proposed to“scan”the cells - transmitting the signal from each cell to its associated light, in turn, over a single wire. If this were done fast enough the retaining power of the eye would cause the resultant image to be seen asa complete picture.41.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A.Television in the Electronic EraB.Harmful Effects of Television ViewingC.First Steps in the Invention of TelevisionD.The Art of Television42.As it is used in the passage, the word“predecessors”(paragraph 1) meansA.a teacher of the highest rank in a university departmentB.a person who plans and understands the making of machines, roads, bridges, etc.C.a person who teaches, esp. as a professionD.a person who held a position before someone else43.An important discovery in early television was the electrical resistance of___A. mosaicsB. the human eyeC. lensesD. the element selenium 44. The three major goals of public speaking - to inform, to persuade, to entertain - are also the three major goals of everyday conversation. In conversation, almost石油专业资料下载3without thinking about it, you employ a wide range of skills. You organize your ideas logically. You tailor your message to your audience. You tell a story for maximum impact. You adapt to feedback from your listener. These are among the most important skills you will need for public speaking.Of course, public speaking is also different from conversation. First, public speaking is more highly structured than conversation. It usually imposes strict time limitations on the speaker, and it requires more detailed preparation than ordinary conversation. Second, speechmaking requires more formal language. Listeners react negatively to speeches loaded with slang, jargon, and bad grammar. Third public speaking demands a different method of delivery. Effective speakers adjust their voices to the larger audience and work at avoiding distracting physical mannerism and verbal habits. One of the major concerns of students in any speech class is stage flight. Actually, most successful speakers are nervous before making a speech. Your speech class will give you an opportunity to gain confidence and make your nervousness work for you rather than against you. You will take a big step toward overcoming stage fright if you think positively, choose speech topics you really care about, prepare thoroughly, and concentrate on communicating with your audience. Like many students over the years, you too can develop confidence in your speechmaking abilities.Because speechmaking is a form of power, it carries with it heavy ethical responsibilities. Ethical speakers use sound means to achieve sound goals. They do this by being well informed about their subjects, by being honest in what they say, by using sound evidence, and by employing valid reasoning45.The major goals that public speaking and daily conversation have in common are:A.The main goals of public speaking and daily conversation are to convey the message using formal language and requiring detailed preparation.B.The main goal of public speaking and daily conversation is to convey the message to a listener using their feedbackC.The main goals of public speaking and daily conversation are to inform, persuade, entertain the audience.D.The main goals of public speaking and daily conversation are to communicate a clear message through a channel without interference.46.Public speaking and daily conversation are different because:A.Daily conversation uses formal language and requires detailed preparation to conveythe message.B.Daily conversation is more structured than public speaking.C.Public speaking uses slang and physical gestures to convey their message to a larger audience.D.Public speaking uses formal language and is more structured than daily conversation.47.According to the article, you can gain confidence and make your nervousnesswork for you rather than against you by:A.more preparation and choosing topics you really care about.B.less preparation and more concentration on communicating with the audience.C.rehearsing your speech for hours on stage.D.memorizing every word of your speech before giving it.48.The main message of this article is:A.Public speaking is much harder than daily conversation.B.Public speaking requires years of training.C.Skilled public speakers have an ethical responsibility in the message they convey to their石油专业资料下载4audience by being honest and using sound evidence.D. Skilled public speakers are never nervous and have no stage fright.Questions 49 to 52 are based on the following passage:(2004版第45课Oil ) What was the origin of the oil which now drives our motor-cars and aircraft? Scientists are confident about the formation of coal, but they do not seem so sure when asked about oil. They think that the oil under the surface of the earth was formed from living things in the sea. Countless billions of minute sea creatures and plants lived and sank to the sea bed. They were covered with huge deposits of mud; and by processes of chemistry, pressure and temperature were changed through long ages into what we know as oil. For these creatures to become oil, it was necessary that they should be imprisoned between layers of rock for an enormous length of time. The statement that oil originated in the sea is confirmed by a glance at a map showing the chief oilfield ofthe world; very few of them are far distain from the oceans of today. In some places gas and oil comeup to the surface of the sea from its bed. The rocks in which oil is found are of marine origin too. They are sedimentary rocks which were laid down by the action of water on the bed of the ocean. Almost always the remains of shells, and other proofs of sea life, are found close to the oil. A very common sedimentary rock is called shale, which is a soft rock and was obviously formed by being deposited on the sea bed. And where there is shale there is likely to be oil.Geologists, scientists who study rocks, indicate the likely places to the oil drillers. In some cases oil comes out of the ground without any drilling at all and has been used for hundreds of years. In the island of Trinidad the oil is in the form of asphalt, a substance used for making roads. Sir Walter Raleigh visited the famous pitch lake of Trinidad in 1595; it is said to contain nine thousand million tons of asphalt. There are probably huge quantities of crude oil beneath the surface. The king of the oilfield is the driller. He is a very skilled man. Sometimes he sends his drill more than a mile into the earth. During the process of drilling, gas and oil at great pressure may suddenly be met, and if this rushes out and catches fire, the oil well may never be brought into operation at all. This danger is well known and steps are always taken to prevent it.There is a lot of luck in drilling for oil. The drill may just miss the oil although it is near; onthe other hand, it may strike oil at a fairly high level. When the drill goes down, it brings up soil. The samples of soil from various depths are examined for traces of oil. If they are disappointed at one place, the drillers go to another. Great sums of money have been spent, for example in the deserts of Egypt, in ‘prospecting’for oil. Sometimes little is found. When we buy a few gallonsof petrol for our cars, we pay not only the cost of the petrol, but also pm of the cost of the searchthat is always going on.49.Scientists think thatA.oil was formed from large deposits of mud on the sea bed.B.coal was formed from shale under the surface of the earth.C.oil was formed from sea creatures caught between layers of rock.D.oil was formed from sea water by processes of chemistry, pressure and temperature.50.“Where there is shale, there is likely to be oil”.The author says this in order to show thatA.shale is a sedimentary rock.B.oil was made from shale.C.oil was first formed under the sea.D.shale is another form of oil.51.The author mentions Trinidad becauseA.it has a famous lake which was visited by Sir Walter Raleigh.B.it probably has large quantities of crude oil under the surface.石油专业资料下载5C. it is an example of a place where drilling is not necessary to obtain oil.D. its asphalt is very good for making roads.52.The driller is unlucky whenA.the drill does not bring up any soil.B.the drill brings up soil.C.the drill strikes oil at a high level.D.the drill goes very near the oil without striking it.Questions 53 to 56 are based on the following passage:(书外文章 )Thomas Jefferson was inaugurated on March 4, 1801. He was the first President to take the oath of office in the nation’s permanent capital-Washington, D.C. Although Washington was a new city, it was already familiar to President Jefferson. In fact, Jefferson had helped plan the capital’s streets and public buildings. Besides being a city planner and architect the new President was a writer, a scientist, and the inventor of several gadgets and tools. After his inauguration, Jefferson moved into the Presidential Palace. The Palace was more than a home; it contained offices for the President and some of his staff and advisors. It also included dining and reception rooms, where the President could entertain congressmen. However, President Jefferson did not give many formal parties. This was partly because there was no First Lady. Jefferson’s wife had died in 1782. But it was also because Jefferson liked to live in a simple fashion. Once, he showed up for an important meeting wearing old clothes and down-at-the-heels slippers! Neither Washington nor Adams would ever have dressed so casually.Jefferson was different from the first two Presidents in other ways, too. Each state has its own system of courts, composed of civil and criminal trial courts, sometimes intermediate courts of appeal, and a state supreme court. The federal court system consists of a series of trial courts (called district courts) serving relatively small geographic regions (there is at least one for every state), a tier of circuit courts of appeal that hear appeals from many district courts in a particular geographic region, and the Supreme court of the United States. The two court systems are to some extentoverlapping, in that certain kinds of disputes (such as a claim that a state law is in violation of the Constitution) may be initiated in either system. They are also to some extent hierarchical, for the federal system stands above the state system in that litigants (person engaged in lawsuits) who lose their cases in the state supreme court may appeal their cases to the Supreme Court of the United States. Thus, the typical court case begins in a trial court - court of general jurisdiction - in the state or federal system. Most cases go no further than the trial court: for example, the criminal defendant convicted (by a trial or a guilty plea) and sentenced by the court and the case ends; the personal injury suit results in a judgment by a trial court (or an out-of-court settlement by the parties while the courts suit is pending) and the parties leave the court system. But sometimes the losing partyat the trial court cares enough about the cause that the matter does not end there. In these cases, the “loser”at the trial court may appeal to the next higher court.57. According to the passage district courts are also know as ____.A. circuit courtsB. supreme courtsC. trial courtsD. intermediate courts58.In the last sentence of the first paragraph, the phrase“engaged in”could best bereplaced by which of the following?A. committed toB. attentive toC. involved inD. engrossed in59.The passage indicates that litigants who lose their cases in the state trial court may takethem to aA.different trial court in the same stateB.court in a different geographic regionC.state supreme courtD.federal trial court60.It can be inferred from the passage that typical court cases are __A.always appealed.ually resolved in the district courtsC.always overlappingually settled by the Supreme CourtSection BDirections: There are 10 blanks in the following passage. For each blank there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should choose the ONE that best fits into the passage. Then markyour answer on the Answer Sheet.Foreign visitors to England often ask 61 for a good restaurant but when their hosts suggest one to them, it is usually Italian or French or Indian - in short, 62 English. The truth is that English people enjoy their own cooking at home but are often ashamed of it in public. Even the experts who write articles on food 63to use the French word “cuisine”, which suggests that “cooking”is inferior. In fact, English cooking is not 64as people think. The trouble with it, in my opinion, is石油专业资料下载7that the most appetizing typical dishes do not go with wine. At home, English people usually drink either water or beer or even (strange as it may seem) tea with their meals; in restaurants they sometimes think they had better order wine for the 65of appearances.66 a number of exclusive restaurants in Britain are trying to develop a “national cuisine”. But their main criterion 67appears to be to search 68in ancient cookery books and give the results names like“Mutton Winchester”- it ’s amazing how snobbery survives in the imitation French name, with the objective after the noun. Why couldn’t they have called it “Winchester Mutton ”? At 69of the scale, there are restaurants in London where you can have regional working-class specialties. Translation(2004 版 32 课 Energy in Transition)Supplying energy in 1970 required the harvesting, processing and combustion of some three billion metric tons of coal, some 17 billion barrels of oil, more than a trillion cubic meters of natural gas and perhaps two billion cubic meters of fuel wood. It entailed the use of dirty coal as well as clean; undersea oil as well as terrestrial; deep gas as well as shallow; mediocre hydroelectric sites as well as good ones; and deforestation as well as sustainable fuel wood harvesting.Except for the huge pool of oil underlying the Middle East, the cheapest oil and gas are already gone. 第一部分通用英语Part OneEnglish for General PurposesUNIT 1 How to be Happy如何获得幸福TextRead the text. Answer the given questions and translate the underlined sentences or paragraphs into Chinese. In the past two weeks we have looked at the happiness formula defined by positive psychologist Martin Seligman, where H (happiness) = S (your biological set point for feeling happy) + C (the conditions of your life) + V (the voluntary choices you make). This week we look at the conditions in life that can improve our happiness quotient.Step 1: Peace and quietJonathon Haidt in his excellent book, The Happiness Hypothesis, notes that research shows that we can never completely adapt to new or chronic noise pollution. Loud noises trigger one of our most primitive fear responses (the other is the fear of falling) and we can never fully relax if we are surrounded by intrusive noise. It is essential to have some peace and quiet every day. If you areunfortunate enough to live somewhere noisy, persist with complaining to your local council. Additionally, try wearing wax earplugs to have some respite. If you need your TV, radio or music up loud, wearing headphones demonstrates altruism to your neighbours, which will make you and them feel good.Step 2: RelationshipsThis is the most important of all the external conditions that can improve your happiness quotient. Often our deepest sources of unhappiness are found in poor relationships with others. A cruelly conflictual relationship with a partner or lover leaves us feeling betrayed and abandoned. A relationship with our parents or children which is not based on compassionate, unconditional regard creates isolation and misery. When faced with such relationships, the most positive thing we can do is to either mend the relationship by confronting what is going wrong or learn to move on.Step 3: ShareIf you have discovered conditions or choices in life that have significantly improved your wellbeing, remember to share them with friends. Passing on what works is essential to improve the wellbeing of our own and others.1. What's the happiness formula according to the passage?2. Why can we never completely adapt to new or chronicnoise pollution?3. How could we make both ourselves and the neighbors feel good?4. Where does the unhappiness come from?5. What is the positive way to face with the cruelly conflictual relationship?ExercisesA. Translate the following sentences into English.1.吵闹的邻居的确对我们家庭不和(domestic upset)有很大影响。

2023年中石油职称英语考试通用选读全文共6篇示例,供读者参考篇1The Super-Duper Important CNPC English ExamHey there, kids! Are you ready to hear about something really exciting? I'm talking about the CNPC Professional Title English Exam that happened in 2023! I know, I know, exams don't sound like much fun. But trust me, this one was pretty darn special. You see, the CNPC (that stands for China National Petroleum Corporation) is a huge company that deals with oil and gas. They have workers all over China, and even in other countries too! These workers have all sorts of different jobs, like engineers, scientists, and even office workers who help keep everything running smoothly. Now, in a company as big and important as CNPC, it's really important that everyone can communicate well in English. After all, English is like the universal language of the world! It helps people from different countries and cultures understand each other better. That's why, every year, CNPC holds a special English exam for all their workers. The ones who do really well on the exam might even get a promotion or a new, fancier job title! Imagine being called a "Senior Petroleum Engineer" or a "Chief Geologist" – how cool would that be?But let me tell you, this exam is no walk in the park. It tests your English skills in all sorts of ways, like reading, writing, listening, and speaking. You have to answer questions about tricky grammar rules, read long passages and understand what they're saying, and even have conversations in English with the examiners!Thousands and thousands of CNPC workers from all over China took this exam in 2023. Some of them had been studying English for months and months, practicing with textbooks, online courses, and even hiring private tutors! They knew how important it was to do well on this exam. And you know what? Some of the kids' parents were even taking the exam too! That's right, CNPC has all sorts of workers, from fresh-out-of-school young'uns to experienced veterans who have been in the company for decades. English is important for everyone!I heard some pretty wild stories about the exam day too. There were test centers set up in big cities like Beijing and Shanghai, but also in tiny little towns way out in the countryside. Some workers had to travel for days just to get to the nearest exam site! And let me tell you, those exam rooms were no joke. They had cameras everywhere to make sure nobody was cheating, and strict rules about what you could bring in (definitely no secret notes or cheat sheets allowed!). The examiners were professionals who had been specially trained to catch even the slightest mistakes or funny business. But you know what the craziest part was? The exam wasn't just about English – it was also about oil and gas stuff! That's right, the questions were all related to the petroleum industry, with technical terms and everything. So not only did you need to know your English, but you also had to understand all the science and engineering behind drilling for oil, refining it, and transporting it safely.Phew, just thinking about it makes my head spin a little! I don't know how those CNPC workers managed to cram all that knowledge into their brains. But I guess that's what makes them the professionals, huh?Anyway, after the big exam day was over, it was time for the waiting game. The examiners had to grade thousands and thousands of test papers, which took weeks and weeks. I can only imagine how tired their eyes must have been after reading all those essays and listening to all those recordings! Finally, the results were announced, and there was a whole bunch of celebrating going on! Workers who did really well were overjoyed, and their families threw them parties to congratulate them. Some people even got promotions or new job titles right away, which meant more money and more responsibility. But you know what? Even the workers who didn't do as well weren't too upset. They knew that taking the exam was already a big accomplishment, and that they could always try again next year. The important thing was that they had challenged themselves and worked hard to improve their English skills. And that's really what this whole CNPC English exam thing was all about – encouraging everyone in the company to keep learning, keep growing, and keep communicating better. Because when you can understand people from all over the world, that's when the real magic happens! So there you have it, kids – the inside scoop on the 2023 CNPC Professional Title English Exam. I don't know about you,but I'm already looking forward to hearing about the next one! Who knows, maybe someday you'll be the ones taking it and becoming the next generation of oil and gas superstars. Stranger things have happened, right?篇2My Big Important English TestHi everyone! My name is Lily and I'm 10 years old. I go to Sunshine Elementary School in Beijing. Today I'm going to tell you all about the big important English test I had to take recently. It was called the 2023 Sinopec Professional English Exam and it was really hard!My mom works at a big oil company called Sinopec. Every few years, all the employees have to take this huge English test to show they can speak and understand English well. If they don't pass, they might not get promoted or could even lose their job! So it's a really big deal. This year, my mom was signed up to take the test again. She studied really hard for months - reading books, doing practice tests, and listening to English audio lessons. She said the test covers all kinds of English skills like reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, and vocabulary. It sounded super difficult to me.A few weeks before the test date, my mom started getting really stressed out. She would come home from work and then study late into the night. Sometimes I would hear her muttering English words and phrases under her breath while she was cooking or folding laundry. My little brother and I tried to help her practice her English conversation skills, but she said our Beijing accents were "too cute" and not proper enough! Finally, the week of the big test arrived. My mom had to go to a special test center really early in the morning for the speaking and listening sections. She said there were hundreds of other test takers there too, all looking just as nervous as she felt. The speaking part was hard because she had to respond to questions, describe scenarios, and have whole conversations - all in English! She said her heart was pounding the entire time. After a quick lunch break, it was time for the reading, writing, and language use sections in the afternoon. My mom said those parts were just as challenging. The reading passages were full of advanced vocabulary about science, technology, business, and current events that she wasn't familiar with. The writing tasks required her to write essays, reports, emails and summaries - allwithout making any grammar mistakes! By the end of the day, her brain was completely fried. While we waited for her results, my mom was a nervous wreck. She didn't know if she had passed or failed. If she failed, she might not get promoted to a management position that she had been hoping for. Our whole family had our fingers crossed!A few weeks later, the results finally came out. We ripped open the envelope and...my mom had passed! She got a qualifying score and earned her Sinopec English certification. We all cheered and celebrated her hard work. My mom treated us to pizza at our favorite restaurant. She said this exam was one of the hardest things she'd ever done, but she had persevered through all the reading, writing, listening, and speaking practices.I was so proud of her! After seeing my mom go through this tough English exam, I realized how important it is to learn another language. It opens up so many opportunities in your career. You can communicate with people globally, read things from other countries, and understand different perspectives. My mom's English skills are going to help her get ahead at Sinopec.I've decided that I'm going to start studying English extra hard at school. One day, I'll be taking big important tests like thistoo! Who knows, maybe I'll grow up to work for an international company or even travel the world. But I know studying English will open up so many doors for me, just like it did for my mom. Tests like the Sinopec Professional Exam are difficult, but overcoming that challenge makes you feel capable of anything.I'm really lucky that my mom set such a great example for me by working so diligently towards her English certification. She showed me how useful English skills are in the real world. I'm going to follow in her footsteps and keep practicing reading, writing, listening and speaking as much as I can. Then when it's my turn to take a big test like that someday, I'll be prepared!篇3My Big Sis Took the Sinopec English ExamHi everyone! My name is Xiaoming and I'm 8 years old. I go to Sunshine Elementary School here in Beijing. Today I want to tell you all about my big sister Meimei and the big important English test she just took for her job at Sinopec.Meimei is 25 years old and she's a petroleum engineer at Sinopec, which is one of the biggest oil and gas companies in China. Sinopec has operations all over the country and even in other parts of the world. Meimei's job is to help design andoperate the systems that extract oil and gas from deep underground.Every few years, the engineers and other professionals at Sinopec have to take exams to get certified for higher titles and ranks within the company. The titles show their level of expertise and experience. This year, Meimei took the exam for the title of Senior Engineer. It had sections testing her knowledge in areas like oil drilling, refining, safety procedures, and English language skills. The English part was really important because Meimei has to read a lot of technical manuals and research papers written in English. She also needs to communicate with co-workers and partners from other countries where they speak English. The English section had reading comprehension passages about topics related to the oil and gas industry.Meimei studied really hard for months leading up to the exam day. After dinner every night, she would retreat to her bedroom and review thick textbooks filled with technical terms and practice exam questions. Sometimes she would have me quiz her on vocabulary words in English. Words like "sedimentary" and "hydraulic fracturing" that were super hard for me to pronounce! On the weekend before the exam, Meimei did a full practice run, taking a mock test with a timer set for the full 3 hours just like the real thing would be. She said it helped her get used to the intense time pressure of having to read long passages quickly and answer questions accurately. I helped her practice by timing her and verifying her answers against the answer key. Finally, exam day arrived two weeks ago. Meimei put on her nicest pantsuit and headed to the exam center bright and early in the morning. The test had a total of 5 sections including the English reading part. From what Meimei told me, the English passages were about topics like offshore oil platforms, environmental safety regulations, and techniques for enhanced oil recovery. To prepare for the reading section, Meimei said she did lots of practice skimming through passages and identifying the main ideas. She had to move quickly through the technical articles without getting bogged down on minor details. Then she learned strategies for answering different types of comprehension questions accurately and efficiently. There were multiple choice vocabulary questions that tested definitions of key terms from the energy industry. There were also true/false and short answer questions about important facts, concepts and procedures described in the passages. Meimei found it challenging to manage her time wisely and avoid running out of time before finishing all the questions. After the full 3 hour exam was finally over, Meimei felt relieved but also completely drained from the intense mental workout. She rehydrated with some water and a nutrient bar before heading back home on the bus. Even though she felt good about having prepared thoroughly, she still felt nervous waiting for her results.A couple weeks went by before the exam scores were finally released online last Friday. I could hear Meimei squealing with joy from the other room when she logged in and saw that she passed the English section and the overall exam! With a big smile on her face, she came and gave me a huge hug to celebrate her achievement.Meimei told me that performing well on the English reading section was crucial for her career advancement at Sinopec. The exam verified she has the language skills needed to understand complex technical information and communicate effectively with global partners in the energy industry. By passing the exam, Meimei earned the Senior Engineer title which comes with more responsibilities but also higher pay.I'm so proud of my big sis Meimei for her hard work and perseverance in studying for this important exam. Seeing her dedication has inspired me to keep working hard in school so I can achieve my own goals in the future, maybe even becoming a petroleum engineer at Sinopec just like her!I hope you enjoyed learning about Meimei's experience with the 2023 Sinopec Professional Title English Exam. Even though the technical details were way over my 8-year-old head, I think it's really cool how important English skills are for engineering careers nowadays with so much international collaboration happening. The energy industry sounds pretty interesting too with all the big machinery and science involved in extracting resources like oil and gas from underground reservoirs. Who knows, maybe I'll end up following in Meimei's footsteps someday! But for now, I've got plenty of time to just be a kid and focus on my times tables. Take care everyone!篇4My Big Oil Adventure!Hi there! My name is Lily and I'm 10 years old. I just had the craziest experience and I can't wait to tell you all about it! It all started when my dad told me he had to go to work at the big oilcompany he works for called Sinopec. He's a petroleum engineer which means he helps get oil and gas out of the ground. Pretty cool, right?Anyway, he said I could go to work with him for "Take Your Kid to Work Day"! I was so excited because I love learning about science and I've always wondered what my dad actually does at his job. So bright and early that morning, we hopped in the car and headed to this huge oil field in the desert. When we got there, I couldn't believe my eyes! There were these massive metal towers everywhere shooting flames out of the top. My dad called them "flare stacks" and said they burn off extra gas. He also showed me the drill rigs which are like huge machines that drill way down into the earth to reach the oil and gas reservoirs. They were taller than skyscrapers! After checking out the drilling rigs, we went inside the main operations building. That's where all the engineers and geologists work to monitor and control everything happening at the oil field. There were so many big computer screens showing maps and diagrams and numbers. It was like a fancy mission control room!My dad's friend Sarah, who is a petroleum geologist, took me on a tour to explain how they find new oil reserves. Sheshowed me these cool 3D images of underground rock formations on the computer. Using math, science, and technology, the geologists can analyze the pictures and data to figure out the best spots to drill for oil and gas! Sarah said it's like being a detective, but instead of looking for criminals they look for hydrocarbons trapped in the rocks. Then it was lunchtime, but not just any lunchtime! We got to eat in the camp living quarters where the workers stay for weeks at a time. I had my first taste of "rig pig" stew which is a hearty soup made for the drill crews. After refueling with lots of food, it was off to see more of the field. We went inside this big fenced area full of huge cylindrical tanks. My dad said those were the oil storage tanks whereall the crude oil gets pumped into after it comes out of the ground. He showed me how they carefully measure and monitor the oil levels in each tank. There was also a network of pipes connecting all the tanks to each other and to the places where trucks load up and take the oil away to refineries. The last stop was definitely the smelliest - we visited the natural gas processing plant! This was where they separate out the various hydrocarbons like propane and butane from the natural gas, so it can be safely used for heating homes andbusinesses. Between the rotten egg smell of sulfur and the thick maze of equipment and piping, it felt like we were on an alien planet! After the grand tour, I was in awe at how much amazing science, math, and engineering goes into getting the oil and gas out of the ground and processed. Who knew my dad had such a cool job? I came home exhausted but excited to share everything I had learned.Maybe I'll grow up to be a petroleum engineer or geologist too! I can't wait for the next Take Your Kid to Work Day with Sinopec. The oil fields are like modern-day frontiers waiting to be explored. It's a big endeavor keeping the world's energy supply flowing, but there are so many brilliant men and women up for the challenge. I'm proud my dad is one of them! That's my big oil adventure for now, but I'm sure there will be many more to come.篇5My Amazing Adventure in the Oil FieldHello, everyone! I want to tell you about my incredible adventure in the oil field. It was so exciting and I learned a lot of interesting things there. Let me share my story with you!Last summer, my family and I went on a vacation to an oil field. I was super curious because I had heard a lot about oil and how important it is for our daily lives. When we arrived, I couldn't believe my eyes. There were huge machines, tall towers, and lots of pipes everywhere. It looked like a whole different world! We had a guide who took us around and explained how oil is extracted from the ground. He told us that oil is formed from the remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. Can you imagine that? It's like a time capsule from the past! The guide showed us a picture of a dinosaur and said that its remains could turn into oil someday. I thought that was super cool!Next, we visited an oil well. It was like a big hole in the ground, and there was a machine that pumped oil out. The guide told us that it takes a lot of hard work and advanced technology to extract oil safely. He also explained that oil is used to make many things we use every day, like gasoline for cars, plastic for toys, and even the clothes we wear. I never realized how important oil is in our lives! After that, we went to a refinery. It was a massive facility where they process the crude oil and turn it into useful products. The guide showed us how they separate the different components of oil, like gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. It was like abig science experiment! I learned that they have to be very careful because some of the components can be dangerous if not handled properly. At the end of our tour, we visited a museum that had lots of interactive exhibits about oil and energy. I played games and learned even more interesting facts. Did you know that solar and wind power are also important sources of energy? I was amazed at how many different ways we can generate power! My adventure in the oil field was truly amazing. I learned so much and had a lot of fun too. It made me appreciate all the hard work that goes into extracting and using oil. I now understand why it's important to conserve energy and explore alternative sources. Who knows, maybe one day I'll become an engineer and help develop new ways to power our world! That's the end of my story. I hope you enjoyed hearing about my adventure in the oil field. Remember, learning can be exciting and you never know what amazing things you might discover!篇6The Big Day for Oil Workers!Hi there, kids! Today I'm going to tell you all about a very important test that many oil workers have to take. It's called the 2023 PetroChina Professional Title English Exam. Now, I know what you're thinking - "Boring! Why do I care about some test for oil workers?" But trust me, this is going to be a fun story! You see, PetroChina is a huge company that deals with oil and gas. They have workers all over China who help get the oil and gas out of the ground and to people's homes and cars. But it's not an easy job! These workers have to learn all sorts of things to be really good at their jobs. One of the most important things they have to learn is English. Can you believe it? Even though they work in China, they still need to know English! That's because a lot of the big machines and tools they use come with instructions and manuals written in English. Plus, they sometimes have to talk to people from other countries who only speak English. So every few years, PetroChina has all of its workers take a big English test. It's kind of like the tests you take at school, but it's just on English and it's really, really hard! The workers have to study for months and months to get ready for it.Now, you might be wondering, "Why does it matter if the oil workers know English or not?" Well, let me tell you! If theworkers don't understand the instructions on how to use the machines properly, they could make a big mistake. And when you're dealing with oil and gas, even a tiny mistake can cause a huge problem! So it's super important that the workers really know their English. The test has four main parts: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. For the listening part, the workers have to listen to recordings in English and answer questions about what they heard. The reading part has them read passages in English and answer comprehension questions. Writing tests their ability to write clear and correct English sentences and paragraphs. And speaking checks if they can properly pronounce English words and have conversations.Phew, that's a lot to prepare for, isn't it? Imagine having to take a test on every single subject you learn at school, all in one day! That's kind of what it's like for these oil workers. Now, I'm sure you're wondering how the workers get ready for such a huge test. Well, many of them take extra English classes or hire private tutors to help them practice. They read English books and newspapers, watch English movies and shows, and listen to English music. Basically, they try to surround themselves with English as much as possible! The days leading up to the test are probably really stressful for the workers. They're probably cramming as much last-minute studying as they can and feeling really nervous. I bet some of them even have trouble sleeping the night before because they're so anxious! But you know what? I think it's really amazing that these workers are willing to work so hard to learn English. It just shows how dedicated they are to being the best oil workers they can be. They're trying their best to keep us all safe while still getting us the oil and gas we need.On the day of the test, I imagine there's a lot of excitement and tension in the air. The workers probably arrive at the test center feeling a mix of nerves and determination. As they sit down to begin the exam, I'll bet they take a few deep breaths to calm themselves down. And then, it's time to put all those months of studying to the test!I don't know about you, but I'll be sending them all my positive thoughts and cheering them on from the sidelines. Getting through a test like that is no easy feat!Once it's all over, I'm sure there's a huge feeling of relief for the workers. Some of them will probably go out to celebrate, while others might just want to go home and sleep for a weekstraight! Whatever they do, they should be really proud of themselves. They worked incredibly hard, and that's something to feel great about. So there you have it, kids - the whole story behind the big 2023 PetroChina Professional Title English Exam. It might not seem that exciting at first, but when you think about how important it is and how much effort goes into it, it's actually pretty amazing!I don't know about you, but this story has given me a whole new appreciation for the oil workers who make sure we have the energy we need. The next time you flip on a light switch or hop into a car, remember all the hard work that went into making that possible - including passing tough English exams! What did you think of my story? Let me know if you have any other questions! I'll do my best to explain more about this test and the incredible people who take it. Thanks for reading, and don't forget to study hard - you never know when you might need to take an important English exam yourself!。

1. The Value of Time 时间的价值1."Time" says the proverb "is money". This means that every moment well-spent may put some money into our pockets. If our time is usefully employed, it will either produce some useful and important piece of work which will fetch its price in the market, or it will add to our experience and increase our capacities so as to enable us to earn money when the proper opportunity comes. There can thus be no doubt that time is convertible into money. Let those who think nothing of wasting time remember this; let them remember that an hour misspentis equivalent to the loss of a banknote; and that an hour utilized is tantamount to so much silver or gold; and then they will probably think twice before they give their consent to the loss of any part of their time.1.employ v. 使用,采纳,聘用,使忙于employer n. 雇主,老板 employee n. 雇,从人 employment n. 使用,,聘用Employment rate 就率,聘用率2.Either ⋯ or ⋯要么⋯要么⋯ ; 二者一的Neither ⋯ nor ⋯二者都不Both ⋯ and ⋯二者都3.fetch 取来,接来,抵达4.add to 增加,增加,加5.so as to 以便,致使6.enable sb to do sth 使得某人做某事7. The Moon-Riddle from the Past月球-来自远古之谜
1. Spacecraft from the United States and from Russia have been to the moon, and men have walked upon its surface. Rock and soil samples and information of many other kinds have become available in recent years. Yet with all we know about the moon, there is even more that we don't know.

2. Following the end of the Apollo space program, the National Geographic Society published an excellent set of articles about the moon. Here,in shorter form, are some questions and answers from one of these articles. For the
full story, see the September,1973,issue of National Geographic.
2、在阿波罗太空计划结束后,国家地理协会出版了一组相关月球的极好文章。

这里,以简短的形式截取了其中一篇文章重的部分问答。

完整的内容,请见1973年九月发行的《国家地理》。

Were scientists right about what the moon would be like?
科学家关于“月球外貌”的描述是准确的吗?
3. Many were,of course, but many were mistaken. One said there was no lava on the moon. Another said that the moon material would explode as soon as an astronaut's boot touched it. One said there would certainly be water on the moon. Many
felt there was a chance that the astronauts could bring back to earth some strange infection. These ideas are now known to be incorrect, and no doubt we are still wrong about many other things, also.

Is the moon like the earth?
月球像地球吗?
4. Yes and no. It is more like it than many scientists thought before Apollo. Like the earth, the moon is in
layers, with a crust on the outside and a deep mantle below.
It may also have a core,as the earth does. However, the crust is almost four times thicker than the earth's crust. We do not know much yet about the moon's mantle, that section of superheated rock which goes down hundreds of miles below the crust. We think-but we are not sure-that the moon has a center core which includes molten rock,as the earth does.

5. In other ways,of course, the moon is very different. There is no life, and there is no water. The makeup of its
atmosphere is very different; the earth creatures cannot breathe in it.
5、在其它的方面,当然,月球非常不同。

它没有生命,没有水。

它的大气的构成也非常不同,地球生物在那里不能呼吸。

Of what is the moon made?
月球是由什么构成的?
6. Definitely not green cheese. It has the same chemical elements as have the earth and the rest of the solar system
but in very different amounts-more of some, less of others. Carbon, which is a very important part of living things on the earth,is rare on the moon.
6、很明显不是绿色奶酪。

月球有如同地球和其余太阳系行星一
样的化学元素,但是其比率非常不同,某些多一点,其它少一些。

是地球上生物的一个非常重要组成部分,在月球上非常稀少。

Is the moon hot or cold?
月球是酷热的还是寒冷的?
7. Most scientists agree that some of the moon was hot
for at least a time. Rocks from the moon show that they were once melted. Right now there seems to be heat someplace
inside the moon, possibly a great deal of it. On the
surface, however, there is no sign of heat-no volcano, for example. The surface itself ranges from heat of 230℉to cold
of minus 290℉,depending upon where the sun is.
7、绝大部分的科学家认为月球的一部分至少在一个时期是热的。

来自月球的岩石表明它们以前被融化。

现在,似乎在月球内部的某些
地方仍处于高温,也可能它是很大的一片地方,不过在表面上,没有。
