The first known landing in Australia by Europeans was by Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon in 1606. Other Dutch navigators explored the western and southern coasts in the 17th century, and dubbed the continent "New Holland."Macassan trepangers visited Australia's northern coasts after 1720, possibly earlier.Other European explorers followed until, in 1770, Lieutenant James Cook charted the East Coast of Australia for Britain and returned with accounts favouring colonisation at Botany Bay (now in Sydney), New South Wales. A First Fleet of British ships arrived at Botany Bay in January 1788 to establish a penal colony. In the century that followed, the British established other colonies on the continent, and European explorers ventured into its interior.

Brief History of Australia
Company name
Before the Westerners found Australia , only Australian aborigines lived there. In other words,Australia was an isolated continent.
James Cook
In 1779,Joseph Banks --a naturalist on Cook’s boat advised the English government to make New South Wales as a place to banish the native English prisoners. And the government approved of his suggestion. In 1787 ,a fleet consisting of eleven vessels arrived in New South Wales. On these vessels, there were 750 prisoners. To these people,New South Wales was an awful place with torridness and desolation. But fortunately, they survived and turned Australia into a productive and prosperous place. They also created a new culture which is the basis of the legend “hard work of Australia”.
