US people have a custom to give money to waiters and waitresses as a tip for their work. But why is this? Shouldn't waiters get paid enough by their bosses? Well, many waiters and waitresses get paid below the US minimum wage(最低工资) and work for tips to make up for that. According to the American travel website TripAdvisor, some states pay their servers(服务员) only $2. 13(about 14 yuan )per hour. While no one makes you tip, if you are at a sit-down restaurant, it is usually expected that you tip your waiter 15 to 20 percent of what your bill is.It's not just for waiters either. Hotel maids, hairdressers and taxi drivers also usually work for tips. But it is much more expected to tip waiters. The US hasn’’t always had this tipping culture. In fact, people were mostly against it until the The US hasnProhibition Era(禁酒令时代) in the1920s. The government said no one could sell alcohol (酒). Then, restaurants had trouble making enough money. So, they started to ask people to tip theirwaiters. This tipping culture has lasted through the years, but most people don’t like it. Some thinkrestaurant bosses use it as an excuse to not pay their workers well. There isn't much action beingtaken to make a change yet.So, for now,be sure to tip your waiter when in the US.1. What's the very important difference when you go to the US?____________________________________2 Are waiters and waitresses well paid in the US?____________________3. Who also work for tips in the US?__________________________4. Why did the restaurants start to ask people to tip their waiters ?____________________________5. What causes waves? Most waves are caused by winds blowing over the surface of the water. The sun heats the earth, causing the air to rise and the winds to blow. The winds blow across the sea, pushing little waves into bigger and bigger ones. The size of a wave is decided by how strong the wind is, how long it blows, and how large the body of water is.In a small bay, big waves will never build up. But at sea the wind can build up big, powerful waves. It is believed that the height of a wave(in meters )will usually be no more than one-tenth of the wind's speed(in kilometers ). In other words, when the wind is blowing at 120 kilometers an hour, most waves will be 12 meters high or less. Of course, some waves may come together to form big waves that are much higher.1. What are huge waves greatly harmful to?_________________________2. What cause most waves?_______________________3. Why are there winds?__________________________4.

Most parents always think that they have offered the best things they can to make their children live in a comfortable world. They buy their children pretty clothes, strange but expensive school things, and always a thousand-yuan-cost bike. They think that they have done everything they can to their dear little children. In return, they only want their children to give them good results in the examinations. But why can their children still not understand them? Does it mean that they still want more material things? No. As a matter of fact, what they want is a true family. What does a true family mean?I think it means a place where we can hide ourselves from the outside cold world. (共10分,每小题2分)Why is Denmark the “kingdom of fairy tales”? Because it was the home of famous writer Hans Christian Andersen. But there might be other reasons, says a new study.Denmark is the happiest country in the world, according to the 2013 World Happiness Report by the United Nations (UN). The report ranks(排列)156 countries and regions (地区). All the top five happiest countries are from Europe, and three of them are from Scandinavia. What makes people there happy? The UN considered several reasons.Money is one. We are happy if we have money to cover our necessities. But extra (额外的) money cannot bring us more happiness. People in Northern Europe know this. From cars to mobile phones, from clothes to buildings, their designs are quite simple. Luxury (奢华) is not there.Another reason is health. Nordic (北欧的) people have a healthy diet. They love fresh food. “There is not a big fast-food culture and no ready meals. We sit down with our families to eat our meals,” said Trina Hahnemann, a Danish cook.A harmonious (和谐的) social life also makes us happy, according to the UN report. How about Nordic people? They live in harmony not only with people around, but also with nature. Night life is not popular in Scandinavia. People go home after work for some quality(高品质的)time with family members. Many families have a backyard. Father and child spend hours there each week, planting flowers and building swings.Do you want to be happy? They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a peaceful and reasonable way. Some people are so angry that they shout or cry to show their anger. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing(压抑性的) anger. In the past many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person‟s health than expressing it.They said that when a person is angry, the brain produces the same hormones(荷尔蒙). Their hearts beat faster, blood pressure goes up. In general the person feels excited and to act. Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe if you express anger with wrong emotion, you may develop heart disease, and they believe if you keep the anger inside, you may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.Doctors say we have to learn how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to agree that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself peacefully and reasonably.”Doctors say that the best way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. You can practice in Photo Booth for as long as it is your turn, to learn what angles suit your face. Tip your neck to make it look longer, make eye contact with the camera. No one can look bad if they smile. For long legs, point one leg into center of the frame and get the photographer to shoot looking up your body. For just leg shots, lie upside down and raise legs in the air for the best angle. And your legs will look thinner and be in better shape.Keep shoulders back.Always have mouth slightly open, enough to put a penny between your lips, as this will make your lips look fuller.Lower your eyes and then look up just as shutter (快门) is clicked for full eyes.Try to catch every perfect photogenic moment!61.What is the most important thing when you take photos?62.When is better to take photos outside?63.What should you learn when you practice in Photo Booth?64.What should you do with your shoulders when taking photos?65. When there are lots of people living and working in a city, they need things like restaurants, shops, hospitals and schools. There are more jobs that people need to do. There will be lots of transport in the city to move all the people around. Everything you want will be found in the city: government offices, museums and art galleries, cinemas, big restaurants and parks.Unfortunately(遗憾地) the city is much busier, more expensive, and more dangerous than the country. The air is not as fresh as in the country because of all the cars and trucks on the roads. There are so many people that are not as friendly—— you cannot get to know everyone as you do in the country, and people may get lonely. You do not have much room in the city——most people live in apartments——not houses, and they do not have gardens or lots of space, and because of all the people there is also a lot of noises. The country is much cheaper to live and there are less dangerous people than you findin cities. Perhaps the best thing is that you can have a big house with a garden and it will be very quiet, but there are not many jobs or services there. There are also not many shops, schools or hospitals. It is hard to get around in the country.Every person is different, but more and more people are choosing to live in cities because there are so many jobs to do there. What do you think about the city?65.Are our cities getting bigger than before?66.Why do people move to the city?67.What is the best thing about the country?68.What is the problem with the country?69.What does the writer think about cities?7.【怀柔】Have you ever had problems in your life and don‟t know how to be happy? He held a sign which said, “I am blind. Please help me.”There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took out a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words on it. He put the sign back so that everyone walked by could see the new words.Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, “Are you the one who changed my sign in the morning? What did you write?”The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said, but in a different way.” What he had written was, “Today is a beautiful day, but I can‟t see it.”Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing? Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first simply told people to help by putting some money in the hat. The second sign told people that they were able to enjoy the beauty of the day, but the boy could not enjoy it because he was blind. The first sign simply said the boy was blind, while the second sign told people they were lucky that they were not blind. There are at least two lessons we can learn from this simple story. The first is: Treasure what you have. Someone else has less. Try your best to help those who need your help. The second is: Be creative. Think differently. There is always a better way.61. Did the boy need help?62. What did the man write on the sign?63. Can you imaginethe flying feeling as you are pulled up to the top and then moveddown to the bottom quickly again?Today a Ferris wheel is usually 40 to 60 feet tall. That seemsvery high when you are on the top looking down. But the firstFerris wheel was 264 feet high – taller than a twenty-storybuilding! Can you imagine the view from the top of that? The first Ferris wheel was built for the 1893 World‟s Fair in Chicago. The people who planned the fair were looking for an attraction that would bring people to Chicago. George Ferris handed a drawing of a giant wheel that people could ride on. At first everyone laughed at his strange idea. But Mr. Ferris did not give up, and finally the idea was accepted. The ride opened in June of 1893.Today‟s Ferris wheels have 12 to 16 seats, which each carry 2 o r 3 people. But that first one had 36 enclosed cars, each holding 60 passengers. When filled, it carried 2,160 people. During that summer in Chicago, about 1.5 million people rode the Ferris wheel. After the fair the ride was moved to a nearby amusement park built especially to show off the wheel. In 1904, it was moved again – to St. Louis for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. After the fair there, the wheel stood unused. In 1906 it was finally sold to a company for scrap metal (废铁). Luckily a Chicago bridge builder, W.E. Sullivan, figured out how to make a smaller Ferris wheel that could easily be taken apart and put together. In 1906 he started the company that still makes many of the Ferris wheels used today. But, whenever you ride one, reme mber that it all began with George Ferris‟s strange idea!61. How tall is a Ferris wheel today?62. What was the first Ferris wheel built for?63. What did people think of Ferris‟s idea at first?64. How many people rode the first Ferris wheel during the summer in 1893?65. Compared with today ‟s Ferris wheels, what was the first Ferris wheel like?10.【东城】I love travelling so you can imagine my disappointment when I knew that my localtrain Ferris wheelstation would be closed for five months. Unfortunately I do not have a car but I realized that I could start carpooling.Carpooling is the sharing of car journeys so that more than one person travels in a car. As a result, carpooling can be a cheaper choice than public transport because everyone in the car shares the cost of petrol(汽油). I recently did carpooling for the first time and it was very easy to find a driver. I used a website which lists drivers‟ descriptions and found someone who was going to the same place as me. The descriptions provided a lot of informati on such as the driver‟s first name, age and gender as well as reviews from previous(以前的)passengers. I decided to travel with a lady who had very good reviews. I paid for my share of the petrol through the website and planned to meet her in the town center. It may seem quite dangerous to travel with a stranger but there are some safety actions. Firstly, the driver cannot receive your money until you text him or her a code(密码)at the end of your journey. This means that if you are unsatisfied with your trip, the driver will not be paid. Secondly, it is important to read quite a number of the drivers‟ descriptions and reviews when you choose a driver. Lastly, I would suggest travelling with a friend so that you will feel safer and less lonely.I had a very good experience carpooling. Not only was the trip very cheap, but the driver and the other passengers were really friendly. They were all French so I had the chance to practice speaking some French. As train and petrol prices are rising, both drivers and passengers can benefit from this cheaper form of travel. More importantly, carpooling provides a fantastic opportunity to meet interesting people on your travels.61. How did the writer usually travel before starting carpooling?62. Who pays for the petrol when people do carpooling?63. When can the driver receive the money from a passenger?64. To keep safe, what does a passenger need to do when choosing a driver?65. In the writer‟s opinion, what are the advantages of carpooling?11.【西城】Our views towards life change over the time. When I was around five years old, I was in a car accident. At that time, I did not realize the seriousness of it andhow lucky I was to still be alive. As I look back to think what happened on that night, I now realize how lucky my family members and I were to not have gotten serious injuries. The day of the accident started out great. My brother, Troy, and I had spent the night before at JoAnn’s house, with Heather, and JoAnn’s husband Gary. The next day we spent playing inside the house, because it was cold, windy and rainy outside. At night, JoAnn told us we were going out and that where we were going was a surprise. The five of us climbed into an old car, and we set off for our surprise. It was still cold, windy, and raining cats and dogs outside when we left. Troy, Heather and I sat in the backseat together happily. The next thing I knew was that everything was chaos (混乱)! The road was so slick (滑的) that the car lost control. Glass was flying everywhere, and it sounded like there was noise all around us. Then it was totally quiet, except for the sound of the rain and wind. Troy, Heather and I were all lying on top of one another. The three of us were crying, not knowing what had happened. JoAnn and Gary were trying to calm (使平静) us down and kept asking us if we were all right. Luckily, none of us was injured, just a few cuts. After that I only remember sitting there in the cold, dark night waiting for Gary to get back with people to help us. We never got to the surprise that night. But at least we were able to go home in one piece. After my brother and I got home that night, I remember my parents let us stay up as long as we wanted to. I guess my parents were realizing just how close they came to losing us that night. As I think of the tragedy (悲剧) that could have happened on that night, I realize how precious (宝贵) life is. I treasure my family and friends, and hope that we will share a loving, caring, and rewarding lifetime together. Things seldom go the way I plan them to, but I take a deep breath, try to laugh, and make the best of it.61. What was the weather like when the accident happened?______________________________________________________________ 63. How did the accident happen?______________________________________________________________ 64. What was the writer doing when Gary asked for help?______________________________________________________________ 65. A study shows that the people who are more confident are much happier. They can have more chance to make themselves successful. But how to be more confident? Here are some suggestions:·Speak loud When you are not confident, you can't do well what you want to do. You speak in a voice so low that other people can hardly hear you. Try to speak loud enough so that people can hear you clearly. The high voice can help you become more confident.·Play sports Physical exercise makes you tired but completely relaxed. A strong body helps you be full of confidence.·Encourage yourself Write down a list of things you did during the day to see how many things you have done well. Did you finish your homework? Did you tell a joke that made everybody laugh? Give yourself praise for the good things you've done.·Get rid of fear Fear comes along with failure. But it's easy to overcome (克服)if you know that failure is part of your life. Don't hide your head just because you said something stupid last time. Try to start again and believe you can do better.·Pick up a hobby If you like singing, sing as much as you can. In some ways, a hobby can make you outstanding. The key to the problem is the long nap(小睡) after dinner. If you didn‟t sleep for hours during the early part of the evening, you should be more ready to sleep at bedtime. If you didn‟t nap after dinner, you would not want to stay up so late, and you would not feel the need to take a sleeping pill. The pill is still working in your body when you get up in the morning. This helps explain the fact that you feel tired all day.You should get out of the habit of sleeping during the evening. Right after your evening meal, join some kinds of physical activity—a sport such as tennis, perhaps. Or get together with friends for an evening of cards and conversation. Then go to bed at your usual time or a little earlier, and you should be able to get a good night‟s rest without taking a pill.If you can get into the habit of spending your evening this way, I am sure you will feel less tired during the day. At first it may be hard for you to go to sleep without taking a pill. If so, get up and watch television or do some jobs around your house until you feel sleepy. If you fall asleep and then wake up a few hours later, get up but do not take a sleeping pill. Read a while or listen to the radio, and make yourself a warm drink. Eat a sandwich or a cookie.

When you put up your hands in class, the teacher knows you want to say something or ask questions. You shake (摇) your head and people know you are saying "No". You nod(点头) and people know you are saying "Yes". Other things can also carry messages. For example, a sign at the bus stop helps you to know which bus to take. A sign on the door tells you where to go in or out. Have you ever thought that there are a lot of signs around you and that you receive messages from them all the time? People can communicate in many other ways. An artist(艺术家) can use his drawings to tell about beautiful mountains , the blue seas and many other things.
