《First impressions》

Lesson 4 First impressions.

First ImpressionsThe day that I met my best friend for the first time, I was full of anxiety. I was trying to do some revision for an important oral exam in the local library and people kept disturbing me. I was getting more and more annoyed and of course, the more upset I got, the less I was able to concentrate. The last straw was when I heard someone singing behind me. The singing was so loud that I could even recognise the song! I turned around and glared at the person who was singing. It was a tall girl about the same age as me and she had a big smile on her face. She was standing with a book in her hands near the “English Literature” section. She looked like a literary type and seemed very interested in what she was reading. I glanced at the book’s cover. It was a book of Tennyson’s poems. The fact that she looked like a sensitive, friendly girl didn’t matter. If anything, it made me even angrier.”How could she be so selfish?” I thought angrily. In fact, I’m surprised there wasn’t steam coming out of my ears!I picked up my books, glared at her and whispered loudly,”Thanks to your noise,I’ve been unable to study. You’re so selfish!”I still hate thinking of that moment.Let me tell you the rest of the story though.Because I left the library in such a hurry, I left the most important textbook behind. It was only when I got home two hours later that I realised I’d forgotten it and there was nothing I could do as the library was closed.I was so upset that I almost cried.Just then, the phone rang.I answered it and a gentle voice introduced the speaker as Jenny and asked if I was Jane. After confirming that I was,Jenny said that she had noticed I’d left my book in the library and as my name was in it, she’d asked a librarian to get my phone number from their files. She said that she didn’t live far away and could bring it around for me if I needed it.I sighed with relief and agreed to meet her at the convenience store down the road.I was so grateful!Of course you’ve guessed who Jenny was.She was the gire I had shouted at singing. When I recognized her in the convenience store,I was filled with shame and apologised several times for my ruled behaviour I felt so guilty, but Jenny just laughed and told me she was gald to see that I’d also left my glare in the library! I couldn’t help laughing at this and I invited her back to my apartment for a quick cup of tea.We got along really well and ever since then we’ve been best friends. We’re very much alike and we tell each other everything. To be honest,I trust her more than anyone else.I often think how lucky I am .If Jenny hadn’t been a kind person who was willing to forgive my shortcomings,I would never have experienced such true friendship.。

First Impressions: A Lasting ImpactFirst impressions are the initial perceptions we form about someone or something, often within the first few seconds or minutes of encountering them. These initial judgments can have a profound and lasting impact on our subsequent interactions and opinions. As an artificial intelligence assistant created by OpenAI, I do not have personal experiences to draw from, but I can provide an objective analysis of the significance of first impressions based on my training. The power of first impressions lies in their ability to shape our expectations and influence our subsequent behavior. Studies have shown that people tend to make quick judgments about an individual's personality, competence, and trustworthiness based on their appearance, body language, and initial interactions. These snap judgments can then color our entire perception of that person, making it challenging to overcome or change our initial impressions, even in the face of contradictory evidence. This phenomenon is particularly prevalent inprofessional and social settings, where first impressions can play a crucial role in job interviews, business negotiations, and social interactions. A positive first impression can open doors and create opportunities, while a negative one can hinder progress and limit potential. Inthe workplace, for example, a well-dressed, confident, and articulate candidate may be more likely to be selected fora position than a similarly qualified individual who presents a less favorable first impression. Moreover, the impact of first impressions extends beyond the individual level. Organizations, products, and even ideas can also be subject to the power of first impressions.A company's brand image, a new product's design, or a novel concept can all be heavily influenced by the initial perceptions they evoke in the minds of consumers, investors, or the general public.Given the significance of first impressions, it is essential for individuals and organizations to be mindfulof the signals they convey and the impressions they create. This may involve carefully curating one's appearance, bodylanguage, and communication style, as well as beingattentive to the subtle cues that shape others' perceptions. At the same time, it is important to recognize the potential limitations and biases inherent in first impressions. While they can provide a useful initial assessment, they should not be the sole basis for judgmentor decision-making. Deeper understanding and a more comprehensive evaluation of an individual or entity areoften necessary to form a well-rounded and accurate perspective. In conclusion, first impressions are a powerful andoften unavoidable aspect of human (and artificial) interaction. They can have a lasting impact on our perceptions, decisions, and relationships. By being mindful of the role of first impressions and striving to create positive initial experiences, individuals and organizations can enhance their chances of success and build meaningful connections.

Unit 3 The art of painting课文及译文First impressions第一印象3 June 六月3日Paris, France法国巴黎As a huge art fan, I knew exactly what I was looking forward to most about my trip to Paris:visiting the Musee d’Orsay. Housed in an old railway building, this world-famous art museum features some of the best-known paintings from the Impressionist movement of the 19th century.

As I wandered through the Impressionist gallery, I appreciated masterpieces like The Ballet Class and The Card Players. Even though I had admired them hundreds of times on my computer screen, nothing could have prepared me for the wonder I felt when I finally laid eyes on the real thing. While it was hard to pick a favourite painting out of so many amazing works, the artists who made the deepest impression on me were two of the greatest Impressionist painters, Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

first impressions

first impressions

First ImpressionsIntroductionFirst impressions are formed within seconds of meeting someone or encountering something new. These initial impressions often shape our opinions and attitudes, and can have a significant impact on our subsequent actions and interactions. In this document, we will explore the concept of first impressions, their importance, and how they can influence our lives. The Power of First ImpressionsFirst impressions are powerful because they are quick, unconsciously processed, and based on limited information. Research has shown that people form first impressions within a matter of seconds, often before any substantial interaction takes place. These initial impressions are heavily influenced by non-verbal cues including body language, facial expressions, and grooming.First impressions can have a lasting impact on various aspects of life, such as personal relationships, job interviews, and business interactions. They shape how we perceive others and can significantly influence our decision-making process. For example, studies have revealed that first impressions can predict outcomes in job interviews, dating, and even criminal trials.Factors Influencing First ImpressionsSeveral factors contribute to the formation of first impressions. These factors include:AppearancePhysical appearance plays a significant role in shaping first impressions. Humans are naturally drawn to symmetry, which is often associated with beauty and good health. Additionally, grooming, clothing choices, and personal style all contribute to the overall impression we make on others.Body LanguageBody language, including posture, gestures, and facial expressions, communicates a great deal of information during an initial interaction. Open and confident body language can exude approachability and make a positive first impression. Conversely, closed-off or defensive body language can create a negative impression.Verbal CommunicationAlthough first impressions are primarily non-verbal, verbal communication also has an impact. Speech patterns, tone, and choice of words can convey intelligence, confidence, and competence. Active listening skills are equally important, as they show respect and interest in the conversation.EnvironmentThe environment in which an encounter takes place can also influence first impressions. For example, a meeting held in a clean, well-lit, and organized office can create a positive impression of professionalism. On the other hand, a cluttered or disorganized space may convey a lack of attention to detail.Managing First ImpressionsWhile first impressions are formed quickly and often unconsciously, it is possible to manage and improve upon them. Here are a few strategies that can help: Self-AwarenessBeing aware of how we present ourselves to others is crucial. Taking the time to assess our appearance, body language, and communication style is a good starting point. Seeking feedback from trusted individuals can also provide valuable insights into how we are perceived by others.Practice Active ListeningActive listening involves fully engaging in a conversation and showing genuine interest in what the other person is saying. By actively listening, we can demonstrate empathy and build rapport, which can positively influence the first impression we make.Project ConfidenceConfidence is attractive and can make a strong first impression. To exude confidence, maintain good posture, make eye contact, and speak clearly and assertively. It is important to strike a balance between confidence and arrogance, as an overly cocky attitude can create a negative impression.Be AuthenticAuthenticity is key to making a genuine and lasting impression. People are adept at recognizing genuineness, and attempting to be someone we are not can backfire. Being true to oneself and aligning personal values with actions can leave a memorable and positive impression.ConclusionFirst impressions are powerful and can greatly influence how we perceive and interact with others. While they are formed quickly and often unconsciously, it is possible to manage and improve upon them through self-awareness, active listening, projecting confidence, and being authentic. By understanding the importance of first impressions and taking steps to shape them positively, we can enhance our personal and professional relationships and achieve greater success in various aspects of life.。
