Over her bald (秃的) head, she wore a pink hat that matched her clothes. But the third grader’s cheery dressing didn’t mask her pain and weary eyes. Then a visitor showed up. ―Do you want to write a song?‖ asked Anita Kruse, 49, rolling a cart equipped with an electronic keyboard, a microphone and speakers. Simran stared. ―Have you ever written a poem?‖ Anita Kruse continued. ―Well, yes,‖ Simran said.Within minutes, Simran was reading her poem into the microphone. ―Some bird soaring through the sky,‖ she said softly. ―Imagination in its head…‖ Anita Kruse added piano music, a few warbling (鸣, 唱) birds, and finally the girl’s voice. Thirty minutes later, she presented Simran with a CD of her first recorded song. That was the beginning of Anita Kruse’s project, Purple Songs Can Fly, one that has helped more than 125 young patients write and record songs. As a composer and pianist who had performed at the hospital, Kruse said that the idea of how she could help ―came in one flash‖.The effect on the kids has been great. One teenage girl, curling (蜷缩) in pain in her wheelchair, stood unaided to dance to a hip-hop song she had written. A 12-year-old boy with Hodgkin’s disease who rarely spoke surprised his doctors with a song he called I Can Make It.―My time with the kids is heartbreaking because of the severity of their illnesses,‖ says Anita Kruse. ―But they also make you happy, when the children are smiling, excited to share their CD with their families.‖Simran is now an active sixth grader and cancer-free. From time to time, she and her mother listen to her song, Always Remembering, and they always remember the ―really sweet and niceand loving‖ lady who gave them a shining moment in the dark hour.59.Simran Jatar lay in bed in hospital because ______.A. most of her hair had fallen outB. she was receiving treatment for cancerC. she felt depressed and quit from schoolD. she was suffering from a pain in her back60.What do we know about Anita Kruse’s project?A. The project has positive effect on young patients.D. Singing is the best way to treat some illnesses.62. What is probably the best title for the passage?A. Purple Songs Can FlyB. Singing Can Improve HealthC. A Shining Moment in LifeD. A Kind Woman—Anita KruseCHigh Speed Book ScannerSimply turning pages of a book quickly may not seem like the best way to scan it. A Japanese research group at Tokyo University has created new software that allows hundreds of pages to be scanned within minutes. Scanning text is normally a boring process with each page having to be inserted into a scanner, but the team led by Professor Masatoshi Ishikawa uses a high speed camera that takes 500 pictures a second to scan pages as they are turned by workers.Normal scanners can only scan the information that is actually before them on the page. This high speed book scanner uses a camera that captures pages at 1000fps as they are turned. A system built in allows it to automatically correct any changes to the text due to the page bending as well as light differences due to shadows. ―It takes a shot of the shape, then it calculates the shape and uses those calculations to film the scanning,‖Ishikawa said, explaining the system used to reconstruct the original page. The current system is able to scan an average 250-page book in a little over 60 seconds using basic computer hardware. While it now requires extra time to process the scanned images (影像), the researchers hope to eventually make the technology both faster and much smaller. ―In the more distant future, once it becomes possible to put all of this processing on one chip (芯片) and thenput that in an iPad or iPod, one could scan just using that chip. At that point, it becomes possible to scan something quickly to save for later reading,‖ Ishikawa said.Being able to scan books with an iPhone may be further off, but Ishikawa says that a commercial version of the large-scale computer based scanning system could be available in two or three years. While the technology has the potential to take paper books into the digital age, it remains to be how publishers will react to people scanning their books while just turning pages quickly.63. According to the passage, the advantage of the new scanning software is that ______.A. there is no need to scan every pageB. it can work much more effectivelyC. no manpower is needed in operating the scannerD. it can make the scanning process more interesting64. According to Ishikawa, the scanner works by_____.A. changing the shape of the imagesB. reducing the size of the imagesC. reconstructing the original pageD. scanning several pages at the same time65. What is Ishikawa’s attitude towards the development of the scanning system?A. Optimistic.B. Uncertain.C. Disapproving.D. Cautious.66. What does the underlined sentence mean?A. People will get any book they like more easily.B. Publishers will refuse to comment on the new software.C. Publishers will probably not welcome the new software.D. People won’t need to buy books any more with an iPhone.DVisitors to museums have to pay ―voluntary‖ admi ssion fees, Boris Johnson, the mayor (市长) of London, urged yesterday. He said that encouraging visitors to set a value on museums and art galleries, which have been free since 2001, would work extremely well. Mr. Johnson held up New York’s Metropoli tan Museum of Art as a model. Although New Yo rk’s museums are officially free, visitors are strongly encouraged to pay a recommended entry fee of $20. At the Met, entry is impossible without first going to the ticket desk.Mr. Johnson’s spokesman later admitted that free admission was a ―huge draw‖ for London, but he said, ―Having visited the Met last week, the mayor is impressed by how they maximize voluntary contributions and believes there are lessons to be lear nt.‖ Mark Jones, director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, told The Times that the museum already requested a £3 donation but was not as forceful as New York’s institutions. He said, ―I’m not in favor of anything that makes people feel they won’t want to go because they feel like they will have to pay.‖When entrance fees to national museums were decided not to be charged here in 2001, there was a 70 percent increase in visitor numbers in the first year. Political parties have since been unwilling to suggest change, despite concerns about cost. Hugo Swire, the former Shadow Culture Secreta ry, was dismissed in 2007 for suggesting that ―museums and galleries should have the right to charge if they wish‖.Some in the art community argue, however, that free entrance has done little to increase the breadth (广泛) of visitors and has caused shortfalls in the budget for the museums. In response to it, Colin Tweedy, chief executive of Arts & Business, said that Britain was ―leading the world‖ in allowing its treasures to be freely available. He said, ―To return to museum charging would be a return to the dark ages.‖Ben Bradshaw, the Culture Secretary, said, ―The mayor revealed his true intention when he suggested those who could afford it should be encouraged to contribute to the arts. I believe it is a disaster for the culture, arts and sport.‖ He thinks that free museums and galleries have once been one of this Government’s great successes.67. It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that ______.A. museums in London are free by nowB. most museums in London have admission feesC. Metropolitan Museum of Art is not officially freeD. free entry is impossible to New York’s museums68. We can learn from Mark Jones’ words that ______.A. his museum shows a lack of moneyB. admission fees should be forcefulC. he is in favor of New York’s actionD. he has a consideration for the visitors69. According to the passage, the cancellation of entrance fees to national museums in 2001 _____.A. was changed in 2007 by Hugo SwireB. has been opposed by political partiesC. has no influence on the number of visitorsD. has caused financial problems to the museums70.What does the underlined word ―it‖ in the last paragraph refer to?A. Charging entrance fees to museums.B. Decrease in the number of visitors.C. Ensuring visitor s’ benefits.D. Free access to museums.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容, 从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

students to the basic concepts of mathematics, as well as the fundamentals of more tricky areas、These 30 fantastic lectures are designed to provide students with an understanding of arithmetic and to prepare them for Algebra(代数) and beyond、The lessons in Basic Math cover every basic aspect of arithmetic、They also look into exponents(指数), the order of operations, and square roots、In addition to learning how to perform various mathematical operations, students discover why these operations work, how a particular mathematical topic relates to other branches of mathematics, and how these operations can be used practically、Basic Math starts from the relatively easier concepts and gradually moves on to the more troublesome ones, so as to allow for steady and sure understanding of the material by students、The lectures offer students the chance to “make sense” of mathematical knowledge that may have seemed so frightening、They also help students prepare for college mathematics and overcome their anxiety about this amazing—and completely understandable—field of study、By the conclusion of the course, students will have improved their understanding of basic math、They will be able to clear away the mystery(神秘性) of mathematics and face their studies with more confidence than they ever imagined、In addition, they will strengthen their ability to accept new and exciting mathematical challenges、Professor H、Siegel, honored by Kentucky Educational Television as “the best math teacher in Ameri ca,” is a devoted teacher and has a gift for explaining mathematical concepts in ways that make them seem clear and obvious、From the basic concrete ideas to the more abstract problems, he is master in making math lectures learner-friendlier and less scary、With a PhD in Mathematics Education from Georgia State University, Dr、Siegel teachesmathematics at Central Arizona College、His courses include various make-up classes and a number of lectures for future primary school teachers、If the course fails to provide complete satisfaction to you, you can easily exchange it for any other course that we offer、Or you can get your money back、56、What does the course Basic Math mainly cover?A、Algebra、B、College Mathematics、C、Arithmetic、D、Mathematics Education、57、What benefits can students expect from Basic Math?A、Stronger imaginative ability、B、Additional presentation skills、C、More mathematical confidence、D、Greater chances of becoming teachers、58、What can we learn about Professor H、Siegel?A、He is a guest lecturer at Kentucky Educational Television、B、He is to deliver 30 lectures in Basic Math、C、He works in Georgia State University、D、He specializes in training teachers、59、Where is the passage most likely to have been taken from?A、A news report、B、A book reviewC、A lesson plan、D、An advertisementBPeanuts to ThisProudly reading my words, I glanced around the room, only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes、Confused, I glanced toward my stone-faced teacher、Having no choice, I slowly raised the report I had slaved over, hoping to hide myself、“What could be causing everyone to act this way?”Quickly, I flashed back to the day Miss Lancelot gave me the task、This was the first real talk I received in my new school、It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington、Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country, I had never heard of that name before、As I searched the name of this fellow, it became evident that there were two people bearing the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America、I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant、I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice; flip (掷) a coin、Heads—the commander, and tails—the peanuts guy、Ah! Tails, my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver、Weeks later, standing before this unfriendly mass, I was totally lost、Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong、As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution、” The whole world became quite! How could I know that she meant that George Washington?Obviously, my grade was awful、Heartbroken but fearless, I decided to turn thisaround、I talked to Miss Lancelot, but she insisted: No re-dos; no new grade、I felt that the punishment was not justified, and I believed I deserved a second chance、Consequently, I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year、Ten months later, that chance unfolded as I found myself sitting in the headmaster’s office with my grandfather, now having an entirely different conversation、I smiled and flashed back to the embarrassing moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster informed me of my option to skip the sixth grade、Justice is sweet!60、What did the author’s classmates think about his report?A、Controversial、B、Ridiculous、C、Boring、D、Puzzling、61、Why was the author confused about the task?A、He was unfamiliar with American history、B、He followed the advice and flipped a coin、C、He forgot his teacher’s instruction、D、He was new at the school、62、The underlined word “burning” in Para、3 probably means _______、A、annoyedB、ashamedC、readyD、eager63、In the end, the author turned things around _______、A、by redoing his taskB、through his own effortsC、with the help of his grandfatherD、under the guidance of his headmasterCDecision-making under StressA new review based on a research shows that acute stress affects the way the brain considers the advantages and disadvantages, causing it to focus on pleasure and ignore the possible negative (负面的) consequences of a decision、The research suggests that stress may change the way people make choices in predictable ways、“Stress affects how people learn,” says Professor Mara Mather、“People learn better about positive than negative outcomes under stress、”For example, two recent studies looked at how people learned to connect images(影像) with either rewards or punishments、In one experiment, some of the participants were first stressed by having to give a speech and do difficult math problems in front of an audience; in the other, some were stressed by having to keep their hands in ice water、In both cases, the stressed participants remembered the rewarded material more accurately and the punished material less accuratel y than those who hadn’t gone through the stress、This phenomenon is likely not surprising to anyone who has tried to resist eating cookies or smoking a cigarette while under stress –at those moments, only the pleasure associated with such activities comes to mind、But the findings further suggest that stress may bring about a double effect、Not only are rewarding experiences remembered better, but negative consequences are also easily recalled、The research also found that stress appears to affect decision-making differently in men and women、While both men and women tend to focus on rewards and less on consequences under stress, their responses to risk turn out to be different、Men who had been stressed by the cold-water task tended to take more risks in the experiment while women responded in the opposite way、In stressful situations in which risk-taking can pay off big, men may tend to do better, when caution weighs more, however, women will win、This tendency to slow down and become more cautious when decisions are risky might also help explain why women are less likely to become addicted than men: they may more often avoid making the risky choices that eventually harden into addiction、64、We can learn from the passage that people under pressure tend to ______、A、keep rewards better in their memoryB、recall consequences more effortlesslyC、make risky decisions more frequentlyD、learn a subject more effectively65、According to the research, stress affects people most probably in their ______、A、ways of making choicesB、preference for pleasureC、tolerance of punishmentsD、responses to suggestions66、The research has proved that in a stressful situation, ______、A、women find it easier to fall into certain habitsB、men have a greater tendency to slow downC、women focus more on outcomesD、men are more likely to take risksDWilderness“In wilderness(荒野) is the preservation of the world、” This is a famous saying from a writer regarded as one of the fathers of environmentalism、The frequency with which it is borrowed mirrors a heated debate on environmental protection: whether to place wilderness at the heart of what is to be preserved、As John Sauven of Greenpeace UK points out, there is a strong appeal in images of the wild, the untouched; more than anything else, they speak of the nature that many people value most dearly、The urge to leave the subject of such images untouched is strong, and the danger exploitation(开发) brings to such landscapes(景观) is real、Some of these wildernesses also perform functions that humans need—the rainforests, for example, store carbon in vast quantities、To Mr、Sauven, these ”ecosystem services” far outweigh the gains from exploitation、Lee Lane, a visiting fellow at the Hudson Institute, takes the opposing view、He acknowledges that wildernesses do provide useful services, such as water conservation、But that is not, he argues, a reason to avoid all human presence, or indeed commercial and industrial exploitation、There are ever more people on the Earth, and they reasonably and rightfully want to have better lives, rather than merely struggle for survival、While the waysof using resources have improved, there is still a growing need for raw materials, and some wildernesses contain them in abundance、If they can be tapped without reducing the services those wildernesses provide, the argument goes, there is no further reason not to do so、Being untouched is not, in itself, a characteristic worth valuing above all others、I look forwards to seeing these views taken further, and to their being challenged by the other participants、One challenge that suggests itself to me is that both cases need to take on the question of spiritual value a little more directly、And there is a practical question as to whether wildernesses can be exploited without harm、This is a topic that calls for not only free expression of feelings, but also the guidance of reason、What position wilderness should enjoy in the preservation of the world obviously deserves much more serious thinking、67、John Sauven holds that_____、A、many people value nature too muchB、exploitation of wildernesses is harmfulC、wildernesses provide humans with necessitiesD、the urge to develop the ecosystem services is strong68、What is the main idea of Para、3?A、The exploitation is necessary for the poor people、B、Wildernesses cannot guarantee better use of raw materials、C、Useful services of wildernesses are not the reason for no exploitation、D、All the characteristics concerning the exploitation should be treated equally、69、What is the author’s attitude towards this debate?A、Objective、B、Disapproving、C、Sceptical、D、Optimistic、70、Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?A、B、C、D、CP: Central Point P: Point Sp: Sub-point(次要点) C: Conclusion第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.EmpathyLast year, researchers from the University of Michigan reported that empathy, the ability to understand other people, among college students had dropped sharply over the past 10 years、__71__ Today, people spend more time alone and are less likely to join groups and clubs、Jennifer Freed, a co-director of a teen program, has another explanation、Turn on the TV, and you’re showered with news and reality shows full of people fighting, competing, and generally treating one another with no respect、__72__There are good reasons not to follow those bad examples、Humans are socially related by nature、__73__ Researchers have also found that empathetic teenagers are more likely to have high self-respect、Besides, empathy can be a cure for loneliness, sadness, anxiety, and fear、Empathy is also an indication of a good leader、In fact, Freed says, many top companies report that empathy is one of the most important things they look for in new managers、__74__ “Academics are important、But if you don’t have emotional (情感的) intelligence, you won’t be as successful in work or in your love life,” s he says、What’s the best way to up your EQ (情商)? For starters, let down your guard and really listen to others、__75__To really develop empathy, you’d better volunteer at a nursing home or a hospital, join a club or a team that has a diverse membership, h ave a “sharing circle” with your family, or spend time caring for pets at an animal shelter、A. Everyone is different, and levels of empathy differ from person to person、B. That could be because so many people have replaced face time with screen time, theresearchers said、C. “One doesn’t develop empathy by having a lot of opinions and doing a lot of talking,”Freed says、D. Humans learn by example—and most of the examples on it are anything butempathetic、E. Empathy is a matter of learning how to understand someone else—both what they thinkand how they feel、F. Good social skills—including empathy—are a kind of “emotional intelligence” that willhelp you succeed in many areas of life、G. Having relationships with other people is an important part of being human—and havingempathy is decisive to those relationships、第四部分:书面表达(共两节,35分)第一节情景作文(20分)假设你是红星中学高三(1)班的学生李华,校报英文版正在开展“续写雷锋日记”活动. 50.You are discussing the following picture with your English friend Jim、Now you are telling him how you understand the picture and what makes you think so、(请务必将情景作文写在答题卡指定区域内)。

Li Hua decided to take part in the 3000-metre race, saying though he was not strong enough, he would do his best to finish the race.During the race, Li Hua tried hard to follow the others. Suddenly he fell, breaking his glasses and hurting his knees. But he wouldn‟t give up. Regardless of the pain in the knees, he got up and kept on running. “Come on, Li Hua. You can make it.” Everyone on the sports field was cheering for him. Although Li Hua was the last one to cross the finishing line, he won the …Courage Cup‟.I was deeply tou ched by Li Hua‟s courage and determination. I began to understand that, winning in life shouldn‟t be measured by the final score; it should be based on how you play the game.第二节:开放作文(15分)One possible versionFrom the picture we can see a man is trying to stop the minute hand on the clock from moving forward. He uses all his strength so that he sweats all over. As we know, time always goes forward and we can‟t slow it down or stop it. Once gone, it can‟t come back to us for ever. As the saying goes,“T im e and tide wait for no man.” So people should treasure and make full use of it to do something useful. As students, we are supposed to make a good plan for every day, studying hard and taking part in meaningful activities. Only in this way will we not be regretful in the future.高三英语试题第1页(共16页)高三英语试题第2页(共16页)高三英语试题第3页(共16页)高三英语试题第4页(共16页)高三英语试题第5页(共16页)北京市东城区2012年高三一模英语试题参考答案及评分标准2012.4第二部分:知识运用(共两节,45分)第一节单项填空(共15小题;每小题1分,共15分)21.B 22.A 23.A 24.C 25.C 26.B 27.B 28.A 29.B 30.D31.C 32.A 33.D 34.D 35.C第二节完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,共30分)36.B 37.C 38.D 39.A 40.B 41.C 42.D 43.D 44.A 45.A46.C 47.C 48.B 49.D 50.B 51.D 52.C 53.B 54.A 55.A第三部分:阅读(共两节,40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分, 共30分)56.C 57.A 58.D 59.D 60.C 61.C 62.A 63.B 64.B 65.C66.A 67.D 68.C 69.B 70.B第二节(共5小题;每小题2分, 共10分)71.A 72.C 73.G 74.B 75.F高三英语试题第6页(共16页)第四部分:书面表达(共两节,35分)第一节情景作文(20分)One possible version:Last winter, we carried out an activity themed “Helping the Children in the Hope Primary School in Tibet”. In the class meeting, we watched CCTV news and learned about what the life of the children there was like and all of us were shocked. So we decided to do our bit. We put up some posters on the school notice board and gave out the handouts to the schoolmates. The next day, many students took part in the donation on the playground. Some donated their pocket money and some brought their new clothes and quilts. After that, we went to the post office to mail the donations to Tibet. We are more than glad to have such kind of activities, for we not only set up the bridge of friendship with the children in Tibet but also show our love to the children there.第二节开放作文(15分)One possible version:As can be seen in the picture, a boy is sitting in front of a scale. He‟s put one box on one side of the scale, two on the other, making the scale lose its balance. The picture seems to convey us a message that laying much more emphasis on one thing will probably prevent the development of other things. Just like the scale in the picture, one extra box on one side will definitely result in unbalance. There are many similar phenomena in our life. Take us high school students for example. Faced with the pressure from school work, like the boy putting one extra box on one side of the scale, we tend to spend much more time on our studies than on the physical exercise. However, how can one keep healthy without enough exercise? In my opinion, what our society needs is that people develop both mentally and physically. To achieve success in the future, we should always keep our development balanced.高三英语试题第7页(共16页)海淀区高三年级第二学期期中练习英语参考答案及评分标准2012. 04 第一节单项填空(共15小题;每小题1分,共15分)21. B 22. B 23. A 24. A 25. C 26. C 27. E四、One possible version:Last Friday, my class took part in a meaningful and challenging course—Outward Bound.Early in the morning, we got to an Outward Bound centre on our school bus. Upon arrival, we were divided into several groups and our coach introduced the course to us. Shortly afterwards, we got involved in various activities. One of them was jumping across a broken bridge. I was afraid at first, but with the encouragement of the coach, I finally made it. What impressed me most was climbing over a wall to “escape.” We helped one another and all of us managed to “survive.”Before we left the centre, we had a photo taken to record the unforgettable experience, which gave us a good chance to build up courage and improve our sense of teamwork.三、Possible versionsIn the picture, a man on a boat is searching for some fish with a telescope. However, his efforts do not pay off, for the net is still empty. Amusingly, a school of fish is swimming just nearby, but he completely ignores them. What the picture conveys is that we should never aim too high, neglecting the readily attainable goal. If the man stopped focusing on the distant waters and looked around, the fish near the boat would be an easy harvest for him. This is not uncommon in our daily life. When we aim to build one ridiculously large project, we complete nothing; when we aim for a small goal, we complete it. Let‟s be more practical.高三英语试题第8页(共16页)高三英语试题第9页(共16页)高三英语试题第10页(共16页)高三英语试题第11页(共16页)高三英语试题第12页(共16页)。
