Unit 4 Pygmalion———————————◄课时跟踪·一练而就►———————————Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2020届辽宁省五校高三联考)How old is too old to go trickortreating? Chesapeake of Virginia says the answer to that question is anyone over the age of 12.City officials recently announced that doorbellringing candy seekers over the age of 12 could face a charge, up to six months in jail, and $ 25 to $100 fines. They're far from alone. Meridian of Mississippi, Bishopville of South Carolina, and Boonsboro of Maryland, also have set the age at 12. The phenomenon isn't limited to the US: In 2017, Bathurst, a town in Canada, banned anyone older than 16.Officials say they won't be actively looking to catch teenage trickortreaters in the act. The age limits are part of a broader push to limit pranks and tricks. Some parents think that preventing older kids from participating in Halloween traditions will have the opposite effect. A Facebook post last year argued that all kids, regardless of age, should be allowed to take part in trickortreating. It was shared more than 4,000 times, with close to 700 comments. Some parents argued that kids shouldn't be spoiled. A lot more argued that even older kids should be encouraged to take part in it in the sense of wonder and excitement, and most said they were willing to give candy to whoever dressed up. That seems consistent with the scientific studies that play is essential to help children develop into healthy, welladapted people, and that play encourages kids to develop collaboration and creativity.Given how overscheduled, anxious, and unhappy today's teens are, maybe a little Halloween magic is exactly in order.【语篇解读】美国的一些城市给万圣节的传统活动trickortreating设立了年龄限制,年龄在12岁以上的青少年不能参加此项活动。

高考英语一轮复习:Unit 4 Pygmalion(建议用时:40分钟)Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2020·重庆七校联考)J. K. Rowling frequently shows thereis magic every day.Her Harry Potter series has helped peoplethrough times of stress and depression and she is always thereto deliver wise words of encouragement. She is one celebrity who is very active on Twitter. So when a single dad named Matt Burke sent her a message thanking her for the series, she noticed. Her series had helped strengthen his relationship with his 9yearold daughter Bailey. He included a link to his article titled Being a Broke Parent. He explained how he hadn’t found a level of financial stability that allowed him to pay bills on time and take his daughter on more activities and events. The family also doesn’t have the Internet or TV, which means there’s no “digital babysitter” and he has to rely on his own creative ways to bond with his daughter. Since he received the series, the main thing that has occupied them these days is reading books together.Burke admits that he thought he was “too cool” for the books when they first came out and he was in his twenties, but he’s loving reading them now. “We switch off chapter by chapter reading them out loud,” Burke explains.“This not only allows her to get more used to reading aloud in front of someone, but it gets me directly involved in something she loves, and it gives me the chance to be very dramatic when I read my chapters and bring myself into the characters in the book, which has proven to be a ton of fun.”After hearing Burke’s story, Rowling said how honored she was when Harry Potter was a part of his family’s life and offered Burke more books. Besides, people are also offering to send Burke more books as gifts. For Burke, this experience, far more than gifts, will be what he treasures.【解题导语】本文主要讲述了英国著名作家J.K Rowling的作品对一个单亲家庭的影响。

you don’t forget.”He took the piece of paper and stared at it for a moment before commenting,“I can’t read this.”I wasn’t sure what he meant,so I examined the note.It was my best cursive(草书).It’s true, then. The news about schools no longer te aching handwriting. But I believe it is necessary for students to learn cursive.First, there continues to be a need to sign “hard copies”of documents. There is a sense of ceremony and a seriousness of purpose about the act of signing something. It calls to mind the signers of the Declaration of Independence.Just lookat those signatures!John Hancock’s was so robust (遒劲的) and original that, more than 200 years later,it still serves as the logo (标识) of a namesake (同名者) insurance company. And why not?It is a work of art.Second,a great part of the history of the United States is recorded in handwritten documents, including personal letters. If one has not been taught to write in cursive,it is unlikely that one will be able to read it.Third, and perhaps most important, when one is trying to learn something, somewhere in the process there must be a slow step.Writing in longhand is a means of slowing down enough to be able to think deeply about what one is penning. In times of budgetary trial, schools often jettison music and art instruction but keep dangerous football. If cursive joins those victims from the curriculum, then it will be the loss of yet one more outlet (发泄途径) through which students are able to say,“This is my mark. This is me.”I still remember in fifth grade,I once handed my finished work to Mrs.Shaw,my handwriting teacher. She looked at it,caught her breath, and said,“Oh,my.I think you’re going to be a writer someday.”Thank you,Mrs.Shaw, for seeing so much in my handwriting.I needed that push.1.The author’s stude nt .A.knew few should. The sun is our greatest source of a vitamin that is essential for good health—Vitamin D.This important vitamin strengthens bones and teeth and is linked to the prevention of heart disease, cancer and many other lifethreatening diseases. The recommended daily requirement is 400600 International Units(IU).In summer, people with dark brown eyes and darker skin turn sunlight from just 15 minutes outside without sunscreen into adequate amounts of Vitamin D.Even during winter, just a 10minute walk at midday can keep the body's Vitamin D at healthy levels.During brief winter walks,we receive the greatest benefits when we wear no sunscreen and expose as much skin to the sun as possible.Vitamin D can be also obtained from foods.Salmon is one of the best sources of the Vitamin.Egg yolks(蛋黄),cheese, mushrooms and some animal organs contain smaller quantities of it.To attract consumers, food companies add Vitamin D to some of their milk products. The practice of putting the Vitamin into milk began in the 1930s.At that time, many children were suffering from rickets,an illness that is caused by a deficiency (缺乏)of Vitamin D.It made the children's bones soft and weak.Adding Vitamin D to milk helped to solve the problem, and it has been available ever since. For people who still need more Vitamin D,there is another option:Take Vitamin D supplements(补充物).These products are widely sold in stores. However, anyone considering taking supplements should consult a physician first.1.During the winter months, people ________.A.aren't able to meet their When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not.In my first literature class, Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said,“Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to do it.”She glanced down at me through her glasses,“Y ou are no different from your classmates, young man.”I tried, but I didn't finish the reading when the bell rang.I had to take it home.In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn't get much education. But Louis didn't give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots (点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.Wasn't I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted” students? My thoughts spilled out and my pen started to dance. I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was no different from others; I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problems, why should I ever give up?I didn't expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs.Smith, so it was quitea surprise when it came back to me the next day—with an “A” on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words:“See what you can do when you keep trying?”1.The author didn't finish the reading in class because ________.A.he was new to the classB.he was tired of literatureC.he had an attention disorderD.he wanted to take the task home2.What do we know about Louis Braille from the passage?A.He had good sight.B.He made a great invention.C.He gave up reading.D.He learned a lot from school.3.What was Mrs. Smith's attitude to the author at the end of the story?A.Angry.

故选B。

3.What may most people agree with according to the passage?A.All people should take part in the Halloween traditional activities.B.Halloween tradition is no longer as attractive as before.C.It's not a good idea to limit the age of going trickortreating.D.Play is necessary to help children develop into healthy and welladapted people.解析:选C 细节理解题。

B(2020届湖北省武汉市外国语学校高三质检)What's small, buzzes here and there and visits flowers? If you said bees or hummingbirds, you got it. You wouldn't be the first if you mixed the two up. Now a group of researchers even say we should embrace our history of considering the two together in the same group. The way scientists study bees could help them study hummingbird behavior, too.Scientists first compared the two back in the 1970s when studying how animals search for food. The idea is that animals use a kind of math to make choices in order to minimize the work it takes to earn maximum rewards. Researchers at the time focused on movement rules, like the order in which they visited flowers, and where flowerswere locat ed relative to others. It was “almost like an algorithm (算法)” for efficient searching, said David Pritchard, a biologist at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Hummingbirds and bees had similar solutions. As the field of animal cognition (认知) appeared, hummingbird and bee research parted. Neuroscientists and behavioral ecologists developed ways to study bee behavior in naturalistic settings. Hummingbird researchers compared hummingbirds to other birds and borrowed methods from psychology to study their ability to learn in the lab. To be fair, hummingbirds and bees differ. For example, hummingbirds have more advanced eyes and brains than bees. Honeybees and bumblebees are social; hummingbirds typically aren't.But however they perceive(感知) or process information, they both experience similar information, Dr. Pritchard said. In daytoday searching for food, for example, hummingbirds may rely on more of a bee'seye view than a bird'seye view. Like other birds, they rely on landmarks, distances and directions to make maps when traveling long distances, but they don't use these cues to find flowers. Move a flower just an inch or so away from where a hummingbird thought it was and it will hover over the flower's original location. Dr. Pritchard is investigating if, like bees, hummingbirds engage in view matching—hovering, scanning snapshots of a place to its memory and using those as references later.【语篇解读】科学家们从运动规律、认知、感知或处理信息等方面对比了蜜蜂和蜂鸟的相同点和不同点。
