She told Mrs. Corney that she stole something gold from Oliver’s mother and that this would help Oliver discover his mother’s name.Chapter 7Toby told Fagin that the burglary failed and that they left Oliver in a ditch. Fagin was very angry and rushed out. He talked to Nancy and then to a man called Monks. They hoped that Oliver was not dead. Monks thought that he saw a woman listening to them talk. Mr Bumble decided to marry Mrs Corney. Oliver woke up and went back to the house he tried to burgle. A young lady and her aunt lived in the house and they looked after him.Chapter 8Rose and her aunt, Mrs Maylie, saw Oliver and did not believe that he was a criminal. They asked the doctor to help them save him. The doctor helped Oliver, and then he tried to frighten Giles and Brittles. He made them doubt whether this was the boy in the burglary. The doctor saved Oliver by telling them that he was hurt in an accident and that the servants were wrong to think he was in the burglary. The police officers believed him and went away. Oliver gradually got better and the doctor took him to see Mr. Brownlow. On the way, Oliver saw the house where Sikes and Toby took him, and the doctor goes into it. Harry asked Rose to marry him, but she refused. She said that she had a mark against her name because of her mother, and that she did not want to prevent Harry from being an important man. Harry left, but made Oliver promise to write to him about Rose.Chapter 10Mr Bumble was now the workhouse manager. He fought with his new wife, and she won. He was laughed at by the people in the workhouse. He met Monks and told him that he knew the woman who knew Old Sally’s secret. They arranged to meet the next night. Monks threw the items in the river.7Chapter 11Bill Sikes was sick, and Nancy looked after him. Fagin and the boys brought him some food. Nancy listened to a conversation between Fagin and Monks, and decided to visit Rose Maylie. She told her that Monks was Oliver’s brother. They decided to talk to Nancy. Noah Claypole and Charlotte stole money from Mr Sowerberry and ran away to London. 乍一看起来,不无理由推测,倘若他对白背心绅士的预见抱有适度的敬重之意,只消把手帕的一端系在墙上的一个铁钩上边,把自己挂在另外一端,保准将一劳永逸地叫那位贤哲取得未卜先知的名望。

不过,要表演这套把式却存在一个障碍,就是说,手帕向来就被定为奢侈之物,理事会一道明令,便世世代代从贫民们的鼻子底下消失了。

这道命令是他们一致通过,签字盖章,郑重其事地发布出去的。

另一个更大的障碍则是奥立弗年幼无知。

白天,他只知伤伤心心地哭,当漫漫长夜来临的时候,他总要伸出小手,捂住眼睛,想把黑暗挡在外边,他蜷缩在角落里,竭力想进入梦乡。

他不时颤栗着惊醒,身子往墙上贴得越来越紧,他仿佛感到,当黑暗与孤独四面袭来时,那一层冰冷坚硬的墙面也成了一道屏障。

仇视“本制度”的人不要以为,奥立弗在单独禁闭的这段时间享受不到运动的好处,社交的乐趣,甚至宗教安慰的裨益。

就运动而言,这时候正值数九寒天,他获准每天早晨到石板院子去沐浴一番,邦布尔先生在场照看,为避免奥立弗着凉,总是十分殷勤地拿藤条抽他,给他一种全身火辣辣的感觉。

奥立弗就是处于这么一种吉星高照、备受关怀的境地。

这位公认的维多利亚时代最伟大作家,将在2月7日迎来200周年诞辰,在英
国人心目中,他的地位仅次于莎士比亚。

狄更斯作为在当时就极受大众喜爱的
畅销书作家,身后又享受着文学史上的崇高荣誉,在俗在雅都斐然出众,可谓
时代的宠儿。

作家茨威格曾为狄更斯写过传记,他认为莎士比亚代表了伊丽莎
白时代的强音——“英雄的英国的化身”,而狄更斯则是维多利亚时代“资产
阶级的英国的象征”,“是他那个世纪里内心意图与时代的精神需要完全相符的、惟一的伟大作家。


对狄更斯来说,少年时代不堪回首,如同他在《雾都孤儿》等小说中所描写的
那些底层孩子,充满苦难与屈辱。

这也是他一遍遍书写这一题材、并能刻画得
入木三分的原因。

1812年2月7日查尔斯.狄更斯出生于英国朴茨茅斯一个中
产阶级家庭,父亲约翰.狄更斯是海军部军需处的职员,待遇优厚,但他的挥
霍和糊涂的头脑常使这个家庭陷于拮据。

约翰.狄更斯也是他后来小说中那些
不称职的父亲和不中用绅士的原型。

童年时,家里还有一间父亲的图书室,收藏了不少好书,狄更斯在这里饱尝读
书之乐。

但无忧无虑的童年仿佛稍纵即逝。

为逃避债务,狄更斯一家开始不停
地搬家,5岁时全家搬到占丹,尔后10岁时又搬到伦敦。

这样的情形发展到1824年,父亲终因欠债锒铛入狱。

那时的英国有一种“债务人监狱”的制度,
一个人如无力还债就有可能被监禁于此,直至还清债务,期间全家都得作陪入
住监狱。

父母带着家里最小的孩子住进伦敦马萨尔席监狱,而12岁的狄更斯则被送到伦敦华莱士鞋油厂当学徒,和满地板跑的老鼠、小混混般的孩子挤在一起,每天工作10个小时以上--与成年人实则无异,且食宿奇差无比,薪酬极低。

许多年后狄更斯回忆:“我整个人都充满了悲伤和屈辱。

”“我真想牺牲一切--如果我还有什么可以牺牲的话--只要我能进入任何一所学校……”即使成年后,狄更斯只要经过伦敦那家工厂的原址,仍会忍不住泪水四溢。

他成名之后,对
这段经历缄口不谈,就连最亲近的妻儿都一无所知,他一直保密到去世的前一年。

两年后,狄更斯的父亲才从监狱里放出来,当他得知儿子在鞋油厂的悲惨遭遇
时震惊了。

家境稍稍改善,狄更斯理应可以重返学校,母亲却希望他继续做工,“我永远不能忘记,母亲当年要急着把我重新送到那个地方去”,这使得狄更
斯此后一生都不原谅她。

最终父亲的意见占了上风,他得以告别这段暗无天日
的时光。

狄更斯无疑是维多利亚时代一位冷峻的观察者,文学屡屡成为他向黑暗现实开
炮的有力武器。

维多利亚时代并不是儿童的天堂,有数据显示,1839年伦敦一
半的葬礼都是为十岁以下的儿童举行的。

狄更斯试图将底层儿童种种不人道的
遭遇诉诸笔端,写于1837年的《雾都孤儿》是第一部以一个孩子为主人公的英文小说,在头几章便将矛头直接指向1834年《贫民法》的冷酷无情:它将所有健全的贫民排除在国家救济之外,九岁以下的孩子更是被随便地给上几口饭,
被饿死的悲剧时常可见。

这种社会批判在《老古玩店》里得到进一步的发挥,
狄更斯将天性中的悲悯全部倾注到小女孩“小内尔”之死上——它深深地打动
了读者,甚至变成了“维多利亚时代的伤感”的别称。

1838年的一天,狄更斯途经约克镇一个小小的教堂墓地,被无意间发现的墓碑
碑文所触动——记录了一个名叫泰勒的少年,暴毙于当地的威廉姆·肖私立学校。

狄更斯突发奇想,决意去拜访附近的这所学校,他扮成一个要寄送孩子的
监护人,接着“经历了一生中从未有过的震惊”:在这里,几近被遗弃的孩子
们受到残酷的对待,校长甚至给他们服用硫磺,只因“硫磺坏了他们的胃口,
这可比早餐和晚餐便宜得多”。

狄更斯回来后就创作了一部小说《尼古拉
斯·尼克比》,用辛辣的笔调揭露了当时私立学校的苛刻与无望,这部书出版后,就像一个季刊评论所说的那样——“狄更斯先生使很多儿童监狱关门大吉”。

而狄更斯在晚期创作的小说《荒凉山庄》,对大法官法院和衡平法程序的批判,引起了强烈的反响。

当时有人拿斯托夫人的《汤姆叔叔的小屋》与之作比,评
价《荒凉山庄》直接导致了英国议会对大法官法院的改革,如同《汤姆叔叔的
小屋》几乎引发了美国南北战争。

虽有过分夸大的溢美之嫌,但狄更斯无疑让
自己的笔,发挥了令人意想不到的作用。

时至今日狄更斯仍会受到评论家的质疑,美国作家亨利·詹姆斯就曾讽刺他是“肤浅小说家中最伟大的一个”。

他的创作的确难以被界定为深邃,但不得不
承认狄更斯“比他那个时代的任何小说家都了解并且创造了民族性”。

狄更斯
一生中大约创造了201X个之多的各色人物,只要英语还存在,这些注定不会消失。

也许最动人的一句话来自当时记录下的一个大哭的孩子:“唔,狄更斯先
