I don’t know how I’m going to pay that bill,” Mangano says. But she had a special ability for seeing the obvious thing. She knew how hard it was to mop the floor. “I was tired of bending down, putting my hands in dirty water, wringing (拧) out a mop,” Mangano says. “So, There’s gotta be a better way.”How about a “self-wringing” mop? She designed a special tool you could twist in two directions at once, and still keep your hands clean and dry. She set out to sell it, first a few at flea markets. Then Mangano met with the media. But would couch potatoes (电视迷) buy a mop? The experts on shopping TV were less than certain. They gave it a try, and it failed. Mangano was sure it would sell if they’d let her do the on-camera display. She said, “Get me on that stage, and I will sell this mop because it’s a great item.”So QVC, a multinational corporation specializing in televised home shopping, took chance on her. “I got onstage and the phones went crazy. We sold every mop in minutes.”Today she’s president of Ingenio us Designs, a multimillion-dollar company, and one of the stars of HSN, the Home Shopping Network. Airline pilots can also use it to reduce the 30% of all pilot-error accidents that are related to fatigue. Driver Alert is based on a computerized wristband (腕带). The device, worn by drivers or pilots gives out a sound about every four minutes during a car journey. After each sound the driver must respond by squeezing the steering wheel (方向盘). A sensor in the wristband detects this pressing action and measures the time between the sound and the driver’s response.Tiredness is directly related to a driver’s response time. Usually, a watchful driver would use about 400 milliseconds to respond, but once that falls to more than 500 milliseconds, it suggests that the driver is getting sleepy. In such cases the device gives out more regular and louder sounds, showing that the driver should open a window or stop for a rest. If the driver’s response continues to slow down, the sounds become more frequent until a nonstop alarm warns that the driver must stop as soon as possible. The device has been delivered to the department’s laboratories f or testing. If these tests, scheduled for six months’ time, are successful, the makers will bring the product to market within about a year.【1】Driver Alert is a device that can .A.keep drivers asleepB.change drivers’ response accuracyC.reduce the possibility of accidentsD.protect drivers when accidents happen【2】What does the underlined word “fatigue” in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Illness.B.Tiredness.C.Carelessness.D.Impoliteness.【3】How does Driver Alert work?A.By being used as a nonstop alarm all the time.B.By squeezing the steering wheel on the way,C.By reminding or warning drivers if necessary.D.By being worn on drivers’ hands every moment.【4】What do we know about Driver Alert?A.It must be fixed on the driver’s cars.B.It aims to prevent drivers from sleeping.C.It has gone through testing at laboratories.D.It isn’t available to drivers at the moment4.Conventional wisdom says that hardship can make us old before our time. In fact, a new study suggests that violence not only leaves long-term scars on children’s bodies, but also changes their DNA, causing changes that are equal to seven to ten years of premature aging.Scientists measured this by studying the ends of children’s chromosomes (染色体), called telomeres (端粒), says Idan Shalev, lead author of a study published in Molecular Psychiatry.Telomeres are special DNA sequences (序列) which prevent the DNA in chromosomes from separating. They get shorter each time a cell divides, until a cell cannot divide any more and dies.Several factors have been found to shorten telomeres, including smoking, radiation and psychological stresses such as being treated badly when young and taking care of a chronically ill person. In this study, researchers examined whether exposure to violence could make children’s telomeres shorten faster than normal. They interviewed the mothers of 236 children at ages 5, 7 and 10, asking whether the youngsters had been exposed to domestic violence between the mother and her partner; physical maltreatment by an adult; or bullying. Researchers measured the children’s telomeres-in cells obtained by wiping the insides of their cheeks-at ages 5 and 10.Telomeres shortened faster in kids exposed to two or more types of violence, says Shalev. Unless that pattern changes, the study suggests, these kids could be expected to develop diseases of aging, such as heart attacks or memory loss, seven to 10 years earlier than their peers.Shalev says there is hope for these kids. His study found that, in rare cases, telomeres can lengthen. Better nutrition, exercise and stress reduction three things that may be able to lengthen telomeres, he says. The study confirms a small but growing number of studies suggesting that early childhood a adversity imprints itself in our chromosomes, says Charles Nelson, a professor of pediatrics and neuroscience at Harvard Medical School.【1】The new study found that .A.hardship can change a child’s memoryB.violence can speed up a child’s agingC.violence leaves scars on a child’s mindD.hardship has an effect on a child’s mind【2】What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A.Telomeres.B.Children.C.Chromosomes.D.DNA sequences.【3】What can be inferred from the text?A.Violence can cause quick cell death in children’s body.B.Telomeres can help prevent chromosomes from separating.C.Children who have shorter telomeres have heart attacks later.D.Being treated badly will make a child’s telomeres shorten faster.【4】What is the best title for the text?A.Violence and TelomeresB.The Function of TelomeresC.Violence Makes Children AgingD.DNA Influences Children’s Growth二、其他Every boy and every girl expects their parents to give them more pocket money. 【1】 One main purpose is to let kids learn how to manage their own money. The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to family. Timing is another consideration. Some children get weekly pocket money.【2】First of all, children are expected to make a choice between spending and saving. Then parents should make the children understand what is expected to pay for with the money. At first, some young children may spend all of the money soon after they receive it.【3】 By doing so, these children will learn that spending must be done with a budget. In order to encourage their children to do some housework, some parents give pocket money if the children help around the home.【4】 They believe helping at home is a normal part of family life.Pocket money can give children a chance to experience the three things they can do with the money.【5】 They can spend it by buying things they want. It may be turned down by a lot of students.B. It requires little time and money.C. It will become a graduation requirement.D. It is difficult and dangerous.11.What might the author's mother agree with?______A. It is challenging for many students to master CPR skills.B. But a lot of people do put on too much weight and don‟t like it.The question is , what can they do about it ?Some believe exercise can be helpful . But the trouble is that it only makes you want to eat more . You might aweat out (减去) a couple of pounds playing tennis or climbing a mountain , but you put it all back on again with a big steak or bread and jam .A helpful way is food-choosing . This is because you use up the fat in your body to get the energy to digest the food .For most of us these methods are too extreme . The simplest way is just to cut down on the carbohydrates ; that means not eating bread , potatoes cakes , sugar , rice , and so on and eating anything else you like . It‟s straight –forward and often quite effective .Still others like to be more scientific . They are calorie counters . One of the ferries,MV Mitali, was carrying far more people than it was supposed to.About 400 passengers fitted into a space made for just 300,police said. The second ferry carried about 100 passengers.“The number of deaths is certain to rise.”said an official in charge of the rescue work.“No one really knows how many people were on board the ferry or how many of them survived.” Ferries in Bangladesh don’t always keep passenger lists, making it difficult to determine the exact number of people on board.Besides the ferry accidents,at least 40 people were killed and 400 injured by lightning strikes, falling houses and trees and the sinking of small boats.Storms are common this time of year in Bangladesh,as are boating accidents.Ferry disasters take away hundreds of lives every year in a nation of 130 million people.Officials blame these river accidents on a lack of safety measures, too many passengers in boats and not enough checks on weather conditions.Ferries are a common means of transport in Bangladesh. It is a country covered by about 230 rivers. Some 20,000 ferries use the nation’s Waterways every year. And many of them are dangerously overcrowded.Since 1977, more than 3,000 people have died in some 260 boating accidents.56.The two ferry disasters occurred_______.A. at noonB. in the morningC. at night.D. The nation of the Cherokees lived in what is now the southeastern part of the United States. After the white man came, the Cherokees copied many of their ways. One Cherokee named Sequoyah saw how important reading and writing was to the white man. He decided to invent a way to write down the spoken Cherokee language. He began by making word pictures. For each word he drew a picture. But that proved impossible -- there were just too many words. Then he took the 85 sounds that made up the language. Using his own imagination and an English spelling book, Sequoyah invented a sign for each sound. His alphabet proved amazingly easy to learn. Before long, many Cherokees knew how to read and write in their own language. By 1828, they were even printing their own newspaper. In 1830, the U.S. Congress passed a law. It allowed the government to remove Indians from their lands. The Cherokees refused to go. They had lived on their lands for centuries. It belonged to them. Why should they go to a strange land far beyond the Mississippi River? The army was sent to drive the Cherokees out. Soldiers surrounded their villages and marched(迫使…行进)them at gunpoint into the western territory. The sick, the old and the small children went in carts, along with their belongings. The rest of the people marched on foot or rode on horseback. It was November, yet many of them still wore their summer clothes. Cold and hungry, the Cherokees were quickly exhausted by the hardships of the journey. Many dropped dead and were buried by the roadside. When the last group arrived in their new home in March 1839, more than 4,000 had died. It was indeed a march of death.60. It said taking one aspirin pill every other day helped only healthy men over the age of fifty. It also said aspirin gave the greatest protection against heart attacks to men with low blood cholesterol(胆固醇)levels.Earlier studies showed that aspirin reduced the chance of heart attacks in men with heart disease. But there was no proof that aspirin would do the same for healthy men.Researchers in the United States began a major aspirin study in the early 1980s. It included 22,000 healthy male doctors. All were between the age of forty and eighty-four. More than 11,000 of the doctors took one aspirin pill every other day. Each pill contained 325 milligram of aspirin. The other 11,000 doctors took a harmless pill that contained no drug. The men did not know which kind of pill they were taking. The doctors who took aspirin suffered 44 percent fewer heart attacks than those taking the harmless pill. 139 men who took aspirin suffered from heart attacks. Ten of them died. 239 men who did not take aspirin suffered form heart attacks. Twenty-six of them died. The researchers said the doctors’ study provides clear proof that taking aspirin can prevent a first heart attack in healthy, older men. They said, however, the result do not mean every man over the age of fifty should take aspirin. They said aspirin cannot help men who do not eat healthy foods, who smoke cigarettes and who are fat. The researchers said men who think they would be helped by taking aspirin should talk with their doctors first.67.The passage tells us that the new use of aspirin is .A.to treat heart diseaseB.to reduce pain while one suffers form a heart attackC.to help old people to be more healthyD.to reduce the chance of a heart attack in healthy old men68.Aspirin can help those who .A.work as doctors B.are under 40 years oldC.are fat and smoke cigarettes D.are older and healthy69.At last the researchers advise us to take aspirin .A.with care B.as much as we likeC.every day D.only considering the age70.From the experiment we can conclude that about of people who suffered from heart attacks without aspirin died.A.7% B.11% C.19% D.44%EWhen I walked into the house after school, the first thing I noticed was a box with items I recognized from my dad’s office. When he told me that he was laid off(解雇), I thought he was joking. Then I noticed his seriousness and realized he was telling the truth. My father has always been a hard worker. He has prided himself on his career. 71 I guess I had taken his work for granted.72 For starters, he was home all the time.It meant my bed had to be made, my room cleaned up, and my homework done right after school.I would come home every day to find him at the computer searching for jobs.73 He seemed down, though he tried to be optimistic. He asked my brother and me to spend less.I gave up my spending money, which wasn’t much.I also found a part-time job.74 He explained that he never wanted to be laid off again, so he was going to start his own business.Day by day, I watched him build it, On evening I asked if he needed help.“Only if it doesn’t affect school,” he said.I showed up at his office the next afternoon, and most afternoons after that for two months.75 The terrible experience for our family taught me how to deal with difficulties. Now I know that through creative problem-solving, I can always find Plan B. I can ask for help and take risks. What I have learned from my dad’s understanding of business and his work ethic(信条)are two of the most important lessons I will ever learn. And they will be my principles for success.七.短文改错:(10分)Dear Mike,I have received reference book you sent to me. Here I wish to express my thanks to you for your kindness. But a lot of people do put on too much weight and don’t like it.The question is , what can they do about it ?Some believe exercise can be helpful . But the trouble is that it only makes you want to eat more . You might aweat out (减去) a couple of pounds playing tennis or climbing a mountain , but you put it all back on again with a big steak or bread and jam .A helpful way is food-choosing . But what sort of food should you choose ? Somebelieve that the less you eat , the slimmer they will be . They don’t eat anything until they become weak with hunger . Some stick to milk and bananas . You’ll find you will need a lot of bananas , and unless you live where they grow , they are not cheap . Another theory says that if you eat things like hard-boiled eggs , apples with their skins on , and lean meat which are hard for your stomach to digest , the more you eat , the thinner you get . This is because you use up the fat in your body to get the energy to digest the food .For most of us these methods are too extreme . The simplest way is just to cut down on the carbohydrates ; that means not eating bread , potatoes cakes , sugar , rice , and so on and eating anything else you like . It’s straight –forward and often quite effective .Still others like to be more scientific . They are calorie counters .
