What’s the Purpose of Studying in a University?

Nowadays, l ots of peopl e study in a university just for the purpose of getting a d egree. As far as I am concerned, a university serves much more than that. Today I woul d like to ad dress my speech on the topic of the purpose of studying in the university.

To begin with, we can make self-improvement through l earning and various campus activities. In a university, We have compulsory courses like Chinese, math, English, history, politics and so on to have an all-around d evelopment no matter what we choose to major in. Although we have already had these subjects in mid dl e schools, und er the pressure of so many exams, we cannot enjoy these classes at all. But in a university, we no l onger l earn these subjects for exams, but for enriching our knowledge and minds.

Besid es, a university provid es us with all kinds of extracurricular activities, such as societies, clubs, competitions, performances so that we can fully enjoy our life on the school campus.

What’s more, we can make many friends during our life in the university. Once we graduate and start to work, we won’t treat others so sincerely because in the real, adult worl d, we have so many concerns and worries. Friends mad e in the university coul d be our whol e life’s treasure.

Last but not l east, a d egree is d efinitely a must whil e finding jobs, but experience is also of great importance. A university offers us many opportunities to find a part-time job.

All in all, the experience of studying in the university is both precious and necessary.

Nowadays, there has been a hot d ebate about which is more important in finding a job, education or experience. Some suggest the id ea that experience is more important. Others argue that education plays a more important rol e. I personally think education outweighs experience in finding a job. I’d like to

explain my id ea in the foll owing aspects:

Firstly, in a more and more advanced world, many jobs need special skills, and thus a l ess educated person is unlikely to do the job efficiently. For exampl e, a teacher is a highly specialized job which needs high education. An experienced but not well educated teacher will probably d o his teaching poorly.

Secondly, enough education makes a person more intelligent. Intelligence is both important and necessary for d oing an excell ent job. Employers like to empl oy those well-educated and intelligent candidates. And well-educated empl oyees can get experience during working, and then they will become more and more professional. For instance, jobs like accounting require good mathematical skill and high IQ. And after a period of training, a person who is good at math may d o the job better.

Thirdly, well-educated peopl e can l eave a good impression on their employers.

A well-educated person may be a quick l earner. This is very important in a competitive society. For exampl e, when a company has an important foreign customer who can’t speak Chinese, an empl oyee who can speak foreign languages may be preferred by his empl oyer.

In conclusion, education outweighs experience in finding a job, and one can gain working experience as time goes by.
