If a friend of yours asks you to have lunch with him, you may say something like this, "I'm a afraid it'll have to be some place cheap, as I have very little money." The other person may say, "OK, I'll meet you at McDonald's."This means that the two agree to go Dutch, that is, each person pays for himself. He may also say, "Oh, no. I want to take you to lunch at Johnson's", or "I want you to try the steak (牛排) there. It's great." This means the person wants to pay for both of you. If you feel friendly towards this person, you can go with him and you needn't pay for the meal. You may just say, "Thank you. That would be very nice."American customs (风俗) about who pays for dates (约)are much the same as in other parts of the world. In the old days, American women wanted men to pay for all the meals. But, today, a university (大学) girl or a woman in the business world will usually pay her way during the day. If a man asks her to dinner or a dance outside the working hours, it means "come as my guest (客人). "So as you can see, it is a polite thing to make the question clear at the very beginning(开始).( )1. In the old days __________ often paid for all the meals.A. womenB. menC. university studentsD. businessmen( )2. "To go Dutch" means to _________.A. go to play outsideB. eat outC. pay for oneselfD. go to a cheaper eating-place ( )3. In some places,it isn't polite to look at people when they talk, but in other countries it isn't polite to look somewhere else. In Britain and the US,people usually look at each other when they talk. And how do you say goodbye? That's easy. Wave(挥手)to say goodbye. Five.BWhen was the last time you gave or received a hug? Do your parents hug you before you go to school? In Western countries,it is quite common to greet close friends or relatives with a hug. Y ou might hug your teammates after winning a basketball game. If your friends are having a bad day, you can hug them to cheer them up. Friends who haven't seen each other for a long time will usually hug each other when meeting.Of course, people in different countries have different opinions when it comes to hugging. After coming to China,I've noticed that people are generally more reluctant (不情愿的) to hug than they are in my home country, the US.My Chinese friends told me that hugging is considered to be very intimate (亲密的) in their culture. It usually only happens between people who are really close to each other, like couples. Chinese people don't usually hug in public, either. But people's attitudes (态度) towards hugging can also change. I remember watching a video story about a “hugging party”that was held in Shanghai. A local artist held the party, inviting strangers and asking them to hug each other. The Chinese participants (参与者) clearly looked uncomfortable. However, after the party, several of them changed their minds. They decided that hugging doesn't have to be awkward ( 尴尬的) and can actually be quite nice. So next time you see your mom or dad, give them a hug—see how it makes you feel.59. What usually happens between good friends when meeting in Western countries?A. Hugging.B. Nodding.C. Shaking hands.D. Kissing hands.60. In Chinese culture, hugs usually happen between ____.A. neighboursB. classmatesC. couplesD. relatives61. What did people do at the“hugging party”?A. They were invited to hug each other.B. They watched a video about hugging.C. They told stories about hugging.D. They gave speeches about hugging.62. The writer wrote the last paragraph to ____.A. encourage people to be nice to strangersB. explain why people feel uncomfortable while huggingC. show how people can change their minds about huggingD. ask people to hug all the people they meetCFor many foreigners, Chinese are the best hosts and the worst guests in the world. In fact, they're not really bad guests, because the guest-host relationship in China is quite different from that in western countries. In China, guests are almost like gods. Whenever I enter a Chinese person's home, there is always fruit on the table, and someone is quick to bring me a cup of tea or water. In the west, the guest is not a god. Acting according to the host's way of doing things isusual behavior for a guest. My wife's mother doesn't smoke. When I see some of her guests smoking in her house, as a nonsmoker,I feel unhappy. Usually I want to stop them, but I must know that in China, to be a good host, she must not do that. In America, if you are a guest, and the hosts are not smokers, you should not smoke in their house. At least, you should ask,“Is it OK if I smoke?”But don't be surprised if they say, “No, you can't smoke. ”Guests in China also have some special habits. Some western people may not adapt to these habits very soon.Luckily, my wife is a Chinese. Whenever we visit a Chinese family she tells me to buy them a gift. However, giving a gift to the host is not always needed in my country. So if you invite foreign guests to your home, don't be too surprised if they don't bring you a gift. And if western hosts invite you to their home, try not to be too surprised if their style of treating(对待) you is not what you have expected.63. When a western guest visits a Chinese family, he often____.A. buys some fruitB. takes a cup of teaC. feels welcomeD. buys flowers64. If the guest wants to smoke in the writer's house, the writer will probably say “____”.A. Let's smoke togetherB. It's good if you smoke hereC. Sorry, you can't smoke hereD. I don't know65. Which of the following is true according to paragraph four?A. Foreigners should learn more from Chinese.B. It's necessary to give a gift if we visit a western family.C. Chinese have more habits than people in other countries.D. Bringing a gift when visiting is popular in China.DNow, more and more foreigners are living in China. They are studying or working here. They love China and are used to their everyday life. But sometimes they have problems. For example, some of them don't know how to give gifts. Here are some suggestions for them.◆It's necessary to bring a gift.In China, it's a traditional custom to bring a gift when you are invited to someone's home. Usually fresh flowers and fruit are your best choices. The number eight is considered lucky, so eight apples or eight oranges are a good idea.◆Y ou'd better wrap your gift. When you buy a gift, the seller usually helps you wrap the gift. Don't be surprised if your gift is wrapped. Wrapping paper will make your gift look more beautiful. In China, people don't open gifts at once. They usually do it in the evening or after you leave.◆Give something that can be shared. If you have some co-workers, don't give gifts to only one person. Y ou'd better treat them equally. It's better to give something that can be shared, like food.66. How many suggestions are given in the passage?A. One.B. Two.C. Three.D. Four.67. What does the underlined word “ wrap” mean?A. 弄干净B. 装饰C. 用……包裹D. 遮挡68. What is the best title for the passage?A. How to give gifts in ChinaB. How to visit a friendC. Bring a gift to your Chinese friendD. The traditional custom in ChinaEMany people love travelling to different countries, but if you plan to go abroad, you should know how to behave in different situations around the world. Most travellers enjoy meeting new people , but sometimes you can be rude without saying anything. In Russia, you should never shake hands in a doorway, and if you're travelling in Thailand, never touch people's heads or point your feet at people. When the Japanese meet newpeople, they like giving business cards—but you should read the card carefully , not just put it in your pocket. In most countries in Europe people expect a lot of eye contact when you talk to them, but in many Asian countries a lot of eye contact seems unfriendly. And in South America people usually stand quite close to each other when they talk, but in countries like the USA you need to give people more personal space. Also, it's rude to interrupt Japanese people while they are talking to you. Y ou must wait until they finish before you start speaking. In restaurants in China you can leave a bit of food on your plate, and it's OK to start smoking before other people finish eating, which you mustn't do in the UK. When in India, remember to eat with your right hand. Also avoid leaving empty bottles on the dinner table in Russia—that's bad luck. When you're travelling in Asia,if someone invites you to his or her home, don't forget to take off your shoes when you arrive. And if you visit an Arab family's home, don't admire anything valuable because your host will feel he should give it to you as a present. With so much to think about , it's not surprising that many people prefer going on holiday in their own countries—or you might just decide to stay at home!69. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. We can admire anything valuable in an Arab family's home.B. In China , people cannot smoke before other people finish eating.C. Luckily,my wife, two friends and I had the chance last year.To see Cuba, you have to talk to the Cubans. Our friends met us at the airport even at 1:00 a. m. which started our trip on a positive note. After a few days at the hotel, we got to know a local guide, Victor. The trip started off on a sunny morning. Our return trip would be along the coastline from Havana, but our trip to Havana would be through the countryside and the small towns. This trip was designed for us to visit the Cuban countryside. At first, Victor brought us to Revolutionary Square, where Fidel Castro made his yearly speech praising the ideas of the revolution. Our second stop was the Bocoy Rum Factory. We walked through and learned how 5,000 bottles of rum(朗姆酒)are produced every day. The smell of rum,and the huge barrels were interesting. The final stop was the market in Old Havana. Here my wife and I went away from our friends and we toured through this large shopping center. From store to store we saw so many items that all had a clear Cuban feel to them. We bought a picture and some special local things, and then we took off to meet up with Victor. As a tourist I was able to have a quick look at Cuban life with the help of Cubans. This is very much like different greetings in English at different times of the day or night. In Japanese culture, it also depends on whether(是否)you are on the phone or you are close to the person you are greeting. We don't get formal(正式)with our friends. We seldom greet them with "Good morning" or "Good evening". A "Hi" is enough. The most popular and most well-known translation for "Hello" is still "Konnichiwa", but it is not exactly how to say hello in Japanese. Perhaps it is not the most suitable word for it. Actually, the correct greeting in English for "Konnichiwa" is "Good day" or "Good noon", and I am sure you wouldn't like greeting people with a "Good day" at any time, and Japanese also don't like to say "Konnichiwa" when they want to say "Hello".Then what to do? Let's do it the way the Japanese do. Use "Ohaiyo Gonzaimasu" when it's noon and "Konbanwa" to greet somebody in the afternoon. Things are different when you are on the phone. Just say "Moshi, Moshi", which is actually similar (相似) to saying "Hello" over the phone, because one doesn't often use "Good morning" or 66Good afternoon" or "Good evening" right after picking up the phone. One invariably uses the sweet old "Hello".Next time, I'll tell you something about my life in Japan.( ) l. How do Japanese people greet each other in the afternoon?A. By saying "Konbanwa".B. Japanese people are not very friendly to each other.B. Japanese culture is similar to American culture.C. Japanese people don't like using "Konnichiwa" as a greeting for the whole day.D. People don't need to be polite to their close friends.( ) 3. The underlined word "invariably" may mean_______.A. likelyB. maybeC. alwaysD. sometimes( ) 4. From the passage we know that the writerA. is from BritainB. lived in Japan for some timeC. is working in a radio station nowD. knows both Chinese and Japanese( ) 5.
