Reading Experience for A Handbook of Writing
This term will be end soon. I have learned four part about this book. Although some classmates think the class of this book is very boring, I insist that it is pratical and interesting to learn writing. When you study it, you will find there are many things you once believe are the truth but they are wrong. So many rules needed to learn that you should work hard. Fllows are something I need to review again.
The part one is manuscript form. It includes five branches: Arrangement, Word Division, Capitalization, Punctuation, Handwriting. This part mainly emohasizes the importance of manuscript form and how to make it. One should do everything according to accepted rules: writing the title, leaving margins, indenting, capitalizing, and dividing words. Before handing essay, proofread it once or twice.
The first is arrangement. (1) Leave a margin on each side of the paper. You cannot make the right margin very straight, but you must not write to the edge of the paper; (2)Write the title in the middle of the first line. Capitalizing the first and last words of the title anf all other words except articles, coordinating conjunctions(and, or, but, nor, for), short prepositions, and the to in infinitives;(3)No period is used at the end of a title. Use a question mark if the title is a direct question, but do not use one if it is an indirect question. Use quotation marks with quotes or titles of articles and underline names of books;(4)Indent the first line of every paragraph, leaving a space of about four or five letters;(5)Do not begin a line with a comma, a period, a semicolon, a colon, a question mark or an exclamation mark. Do not end a line with the first half of a pair of brakets, quotation marks, or parentheses, The hyden that indicate a divided word is put at the end, not at the begining, of a line.
The second is word division. The general principle is to divid a word according to its syllables. (1)One-syllable words like through, march, brain and pushed cannot be divided; (2)Do not write one letter of a word at the end or at the begining of a line, even if one letter makes up a syllable; (3)Do not put a two-letter syllable at the begining of a line; (4)Avoid separating proper names of people or places; (5)Divide hyphenated words onlt at the hyphen: father-in –law, empty-handed; (6)Do not divide words in a way that may mislead the reader; (7)Do not divide the last word on a page. Instead, write the whole word on the next page; (8)Divid words with prefixes or suffixes between the prefix or suffix and the base part of the word; (9)Divide teo-syllable words with double consonants between the two consonants.
The third is capitalization. Capitals mainly used in three places: the first words of sentences, key words in titles, and proper names. Not only a complete sentence, but a sentence fragment treated as a sentence, should begin with a capital letter. The first word of quoted speech is capitalized. Common nouns that are parts of proper names are capitalized. Words derived from proper names are usually capitalized. But proper
