A large dinner party is being given in an up-country station by a colonial official and his wife. The guests are army and government officers and their wives, and an American naturalist. At one side of the long table, a spirited discussion springs up between a young girl and an army officer. The girl insists women have long outgrown the jumping-on-a-chair-at-the-sight-of-a-mouse era, and that they are not as anxious as their grandmothers were. The officer says they are, arguing women haven't the actual nerve control of men."A woman's reaction in any crisis," the officer says, "is to scream. And while a man may feel like it, he has that ounce more of control than a woman has."The American scientist does not join in the argument but sits and watches the faces of the other guests. As he stares, he sees a slight, though strange look of anxiety come over the face of the hostess. With a small gesture she summons the servant standing behind her chair. She whispers to him. The servant's eyes widen. He turns quickly and leaves the room. No one else sees this, nor the servant when he puts a bowl of milk on the balcony outside the glass doors. The American understands. In India, milk in a bowl means only one thing. It is bait for a snake. He realizes there is a cobra in the room. The American's eyes move across the room but he sees nothing. He realizes the snake can only be in one place—under the table. His first reaction is to jump back and warn the others. But he knows any sudden movement will frighten the cobra and it will strike. He speaks quickly, the quality of his voice so arresting that it quietens everyone. "I want to know just what control everyone at this table has. I will count three hundred—that's five minutes —and not one of you is to move a single muscle. Now! Ready!"The 20 people sit like stone images while he counts. He is saying "…two hundred and eighty..." when, out of the corner of his eye, he sees the snake emerge and make for the bowl of milk. Four or five screams ring out as he jumps to slam shut the balcony doors."There is your proof!" the host says. "A man has just shown us real control.""Just a minute," the American says, turning to his hostess, "How did you know that cobra was in the room?"A faint smile comes across the woman's face as she replies. "Because it was lying across my foot."(1)What is the argument between the army officer and the young girl about?A.Whether women are afraid of mice.B.Whether men are calmer than women.C.Whether men are cleverer than women.D.Whether women would make suitable soldiers.(2)Why is the servant asked to put out some milk?A.To play a trick.B.To serve the guests.C.To attract the snake.D.To feed the hostess's pet.(3)Why does the scientist suggest the guests play a game?A.He doesn't want anyone to panic.B.He intends to test the officer's theory.C.He sees there was a snake in the room.D.He wants to entertain the other guests.(4)What does the author imply through the hostess's final statement?A.The army officer's opinion is wrong.B.The hostess understood the American's intention.C.The American was surprised by the snake's presence.D.The hostess has had previous experience dealing with snakes.6.Have you ever heard of a pawpaw(木瓜)? If not, do not feel bad. Most Americans do not know of the fruit, though it is native to the United States.Once, however, it was one of the most popular fruits in North America. Happily, those who love the pawpaw are trying to return it to its former position in American foods. A pawpaw is a tropical-like fruit that grows on trees found all over the eastern United States. It's also the largest fruit native to the US.It is similar to a typical mango in size. It has a dull green-colored skin, and a soft, almost-creamy orange inside. The pawpaw was not sold commercially in the past. The fruit requires a very special environment-low, wet areas that sometimes flood. It has a very short harvest season, from two to three weeks in September and October. In addition, the fruit is good to eat for only two to three days after harvesting. This makes it hard to sell anywhere distant from the pawpaw tree it came from.Planters are again growing pawpaw trees and harvesting the fruit. In several states farmers haveorganized "pawpaw festivals" to reintroduce people to the food. At such a festival in Maryland recently, farmers displayed different products made with pawpaws. There were pawpaw jams, pies, gelato(冰淇淋)and beer. Michael Judd helped organize the Maryland pawpaw festival.Farmers are trying to grow kinds of pawpaws that will be easier to ship and sell commercially. Donna and Jim Davis are pawpaw farmers in Westminster, Maryland. They said that they purchased their pawpaw trees in the 1990s and now sell the fruit at farmer's markets and online.(1)What can we know about the pawpaw according to the text?A.Its harvest season lasts long.B.It grows in Europe originally.C.It has already returned to its former position.D.It used to be well-received in North America.(2)What limited the pawpaw to being sold commercially in the past?A.It was unknown to the world.B.It's hard to grow, store and transport.C.It has similar taste with typical mangoes.D.The planters were unwilling to grow them for low profits.(3)Why do farmers hold "pawpaw festivals"?A.To show lots of delicious food to people.B.To make the pawpaw known to people again.C.To introduce people to a completely new fruit.D.To tell people the forgotten history about the fruit.(5)What is the best title for the text?A.The History of Pawpaws.B.How to Grow Pawpaws.C.The Comeback of Pawpaws.D.The Origin of Pawpaw Festival.四、七选五(本题共计 1 小题,共计5分)7. Recently a test was given in the United States. Those tested included people of different ages, from 12 to 83. During the experiment, these people were given all kinds of breakfasts, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The results show that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work with better effect than if he or she has no breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention to class.Opposite to what many people believe, if you don't eat breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight instead of losing. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.9.During the test, those who were tested were given ________.A.different breakfast or none B.very rich breakfastC.little food for breakfast D.no breakfast at all10.According to the passage, if a student does not eat breakfast, ___________.A.he will fall illB.his mind will work more slowlyC.he will not make progress in his studyD.he will fail to listen to his teacher11.The passage mentions that many people believe that if you don't eat breakfast, you will ______.A.be healthier B.not lose weightC.lose weight D.gain a lot of weight12.Which of the following is Not True according to the passage?A.Poor breakfasts affect those who work with brains.B.Morning diet may cause one to get fatter.C.Eating less in lunch and supper may help to lose weight.D.Reducing lunch and supper is of less value in weight losing.School uniforms are becoming more and more popular across the USA.That’s no surprise , because they offer many benefits. If all students are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughed at for wearing the “wrong” clothes. Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a kind of rule ----- wanting to look just like their friends. The difference is that the clothing students choose for themselves creates social barriers(阻碍); school uniforms tear those barriers down. Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children's “creativity”. First, as noted above , the clothes students choose to wear do not necessarily express their individuality(个性). They just copy their classmates . Second, students have the rest of the day to be as creative as they like. While they’re in school, their job is to master reading, writing, and math; this should take up all the creativity they have. Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way.As in other places , uniforms remind the wearers of their purpose and duties. For example, when a man or woman puts on a police uniform, he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol(象征) of law and order. The uniform means to the wearer his or her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearers meets. People with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another. For students, the school uniform reminds them that their task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education.13.In Paragraph 1, the word “benefits” probably means ____________ .A.tasks B.messagesC.differences D.advantages14.Some parents are against school uniforms because _______________ .A.they fail to realize that students have accepted the uniforms.B.they believe that uniforms will make students less creativeC.they don’t agree that uniforms can remove social barriersD.they think that school uniforms are too popular15.From the passage we learn that uniforms in general _____________ .A.prevent the wearers from being laughed at.B.help the wearers keep their duties in mind.C.are seen as a symbol of power.D.help to create social barriers二、七选五Some people are naturally better than others at social activities. There are the lucky few that draw people to them without any effort. 16.Put yourself at ease and remember these tips:Smile!A smile is understood in any culture and any age as a sign of friendship. So go ahead! It will put the other person at ease. You will seem approachable and happy. 17.Make eye contact.Good eye contact engages the other person to you. When you are introduced to someone, shake their hands and repeat their names.18.Making eye contact shows you have confidence and shows you are interested in the other person.19.Having a trusted friend next to you makes it less frightening to walk into a room full of people. But remember that even if you walk in as a pair,it doesn't mean you just stick together the whole time. The point in a social gathering is you make friends with other people.Go to social settings with a shared interest. For example joining an art class automatically puts you in a setting with other people you already have a common interest in. 20.A.Go with friends.B.Ask the other person questions.C.That will help you remember their names.D.This is the worst impression to make in any setting.E.It will let the other person know that you are safe to talk to.F.But for most of us,we feel shy and awkward in social activities.G.You now have something to talk about and work it from there.三、完形填空I never forget the single act of kindness that changed my life over 25 years ago. CThe world is full of tea drinkers. For many, they simply enjoy the taste. But new research suggests tea might help those who drink it live longer than those who do not. Tea is known to contain helpful substances known to reduce inflammation, a condition in which a part of the body becomes red, sore and swollen because of infection or injury. Past studies have suggested several health benefits. Now, scientists say black tea may show similar benefits.Scientists from the United States National Cancer Institute carried out the study. They examined data gathered about the tea drinking behavior of almost 500,000 adults in Britain for as many as 14 years. The researchers adjusted for risks that individual may have related to health, living conditions, diet and lifestyle choices,as well as age, race and gender. The study found that high tea intake was linked to a moderate benefit: a 9 to 13 percent lower risk of death from any cause than non-tea drinkers. The scientists say the lowered risk of death held true for study subjects with heart disease. However, researchers said there was noclear finding in connection with deaths from cancer.Researchers were not sure why.But it is possible there were too few confirmed cancer deaths to measure, said Maki, who led the study. All kinds of tea-green,black,oolong,and white-are produced from the Camellia sinensis plant using different methods. Tea contains various elements, including polyphenols(多酚).Experts say polyphenols are thought to be responsible for the health benefits that have traditionally been linked to tea, especially green tea.Green tea is reported to improve mental ability, ease digestive problems and head pain, and help people with weight loss. Green tea has also been studied for possible protective effects against heart disease and cancer. The study of British tea drinkers was based on observing people's behaviors and health. This kind of methodology cannot prove cause and effect.8.What does “inflammation" underlined in Paragraph 1 refer to?A.Food intake. C.A kind of flavor.B.Security risk.D.A kind of symptom.9.How did the United States National Cancer Institute conduct the study?A. By examining data collected from tea drinkers.B. By analyzing the effects of all kinds of tea.C. By observing people of all ages across the US.D.By comparing subjects with different diseases.10. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?A.People produce tea using the same method.B.All kinds of tea can help people lose weight.C.Polyphenols are important elements good for health.D.Green tea can be used to treat heart disease and cancer.11.What is the purpose of this passage?A.To persuade people to drink more tea.B. To inform the benefits of drinking tea.C.To explain why drinking tea is popular.D.Tostress the advantages of green tea.DEarth Day is April 22.Every year, people around the world observe the day by helping to care for the environment. They carry out all kinds of activities in an effort to better the planet's health. One way to support this goal is to grow plants native to your area. This helps wildlife like birds and insects that evolved alongside native plants. For many of these animals, plant pollen is their food.Native pollinators(传粉者)often cannot recognize non-native plants as food. This means they do not collect the pollen or spread plants' seeds.Planting non-native species creates so-called "food deserts" for pollinators including bees, birds, bats, butterflies and more. Doug Tallamy is a professor of entomology at the University of Delaware. Entomology is the study of insects. He found that non-native plant species can harm the natural food chain, which can lead to a collapse of the environment. “Plant choice matters," he said. “The plants we choose to landscape our properties with should be determined by how much life can live there.”Humans depend strongly on insects. Without them, we would have no flowering plants, which would harm the food web that supports important animals.Birds, for example, depend on plants for food and spread their seeds while keeping the populations of harmful insects down. Insects support plants that provide oxygen, clean our water, capture carbon and add nutrients to the soil. That builds topsoil and prevents flooding.Without insects, the biosphere-the living parts of the Earth-would rot because of the loss of insect decomposers(分解者).Humans simply could not survive that,Tallamy said.In addition to providing food and habitat for insects and other wildlife, native plants are able to grow easily and do not require much care. That means less watering and less fertilizing. The situation is a win-win for gardeners and pollinators.12. Which of the following can benefit from native plants directly?A.Seeds.C.Humans.B.The earth.D.Birds and insects.13. Why are non-native plants harmful to the environment?A.They make it a desert.B.They pollute the topsoil.C.They damage the food chain.D.They destroy the native habitat.14. Who might be the intended readers of the passage?A.Professors.B.Gardeners.C.Scientists.D.Zoologists.15. What is the text mainly about?A The effects of native insects.B.The ways to observe Earth Day.C.The reasons for planting native species.D.The approaches to growing native plants.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

BThough there are about 400 languages from all over the world that are in danger of disappearing completely, Zoque Ayapaneco, a native Mexican language is considered the most likely to become extinct, because the only two people in the world that speak it fluently do not talk to each other! And, it's not because they live in different countries, states or even villages. In fact, Manuel Segovia and Isidro Velazquez, both in their 70s, live within 500 yards of each other, in the village of Ayapa in the Southern Mexican State of Tabasco. They, however, refuse to communicate because they simply don't have much in common. Segovia is apparently a little flank in nature while Velazquez is described as shy.Segovia was at least able to talk in Zoque Ayapanece with his brother until he passed away about 12 years ago, and still manages to practice it with his family, especially his son Manuel, who for the last five years has been trying to learn it and hopes to become fluent enough to teach it to the next generation.Velazquez on the other hand, has not been heard speaking in the language with anybody. The two men say the language used to be widely spoken in the village, but the younger generation shunned it for fear of being laughed at, and it therefore began to die a slow death, as the elders passed away.Unless the two men get their acts together, the only way to hear the language will be to either listen to Manuel's not-so-fluent statement or see them talk in a documentary entitled “Lengua Muerta” (Dead Language) that is being filmed to capture Zoque Ayapaneco and 364 other native Mexican languages that are in a similar state. We sure hope Segovia and Velazquez soon find something common to talk about. Maybe the fact is that the language is dying and that they should start encouraging and teaching the next generation together.4. The reason why Segovia and Velazquez don't talk to each other is that ________.A. they both are too shyB. they live in different villagesC. they are too familiar to talkD. they have no similarity in their character5. What do we know about Zoque Ayapaneco?A. It was widely used twelve years ago.B. It will be dying out if no effective measures are taken.C. It will be popular in Mexico in the near future.D. It is a Southern American language.6. The underlined word “shunned” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”.A. favoredB. identifiedC. were unwilling to learnD. protected7. From the passage, we can conclude that________.A. altogether 365 languages are becoming extinct in the world.B. Segovia and Velazquez will communicate with each other soonC. the government cares a lot about the protection of Zoque AyapanecoD. we can hear the language from Manuel or documentary “ Lengua Muerta”8. What's the main idea of the passage?A. World's endangered languages are being filmed.B. Villagers are trying to protect their old language.C. An endangered language is spoken by only two people.D. There are a lot of languages in Mexico.【答案】DBCDC【解析】1.细节理解题。
