ACrossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don’t even notice that they’re doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason for this is that the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart and that crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but repeated, drawnout increases in blood pressure can cause longterm health issues. So, planning to sit for a long period of time? Don’t keep your legs crossed.“Crossing your legs at the knee can also cause pressure on the major nerve in your leg that passes just below your knee and along the outside of your leg,” explains Richard Graves, a medical expert. This pressure can cause numbness and temporary paralysis(麻痹) of some of the muscles in your foot and leg, preventing you from being able to raise your ankle—wha t we know as that “pins and needles” sensation. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.【解题导语】本文是一篇科普说明文。

Alex Dzyuba, 31, who runs his own IT firm, recently moved to New York with his family due to work. For nearly three weeks, Alex and his wife, Kelly, were busy cleaning and decorating the new home to make it cozy for the kids. They have three cute children:twoyearold Anne, sixyearold Vicky, and Isabelle, 11. Anne often sits on the windowsill (窗台) of her sixth floor bedroom, where she likes to play with her toys. There is a variety of toys and dolls for the little girl. The window, overlooking Mosholu Ave. in Riverdale, was never open and her mum Kelly thought that Anne was too small to work the latch(插销). However, Alex insisted that when things settled down, they should notify the homeowner that they needed window guards and safety bars to protect Anne and Vicky. One rainy evening, Anne, acpanied by Isabelle, was playing with her toys in her bedroom as usual, while their mother busied herself with doing the housework, Anne and Isabelle shared the small bedroom, where Anne's name is painted in rainbow colours on the wall. After a while, Isabelle wanted to listen to the rain — so she opened the window. Minutes later, Isabelle felt a bit hungry and left the room for a moment to get a slice of pizza from the dining table, leaving Anne alone. Instantly, she heard a thundering sound and the cries of her younger sister ing from five floors below.Isabelle turned pale and realised something went wrong. She rushed into the bedroom, looked out of the window and saw Anne was on the awning (雨篷) over the entrance to the building. Her heart sank and she felt so scared that she screamed. Hearing her daughter's screams from a room away, Kelly ran into Anne's room and was too shocked to speak. “It's all my fault, Mum. I shouldn't have opened that window.” Isabelle cried hard. It felt like a nightmare but Kelly managed to keep calm. “We need to go downstairs to get Anne down from the awning, the sooner the better!”注意:续写词数应为150左右。

选择性必修第二册Unit 4Journey Across a Vast Land高考题型组合练Ⅰ.阅读理解A“Can you imagine?”Diébédo Francis Kéré said to NPR,“I was born in Burkina Faso,a little village where there was no school. And my father wanted me to learn how to read and write very simply because then I could translate or read him his letters.”The first Black winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize was as surprised as anyone else to be selected for the field’s most famous prize. Many architects had openly supposed that 2022 would be Sir David Adjaye’s year, who is best known for designing notable buildings as the Nobel Peace Center in Norway.Kéré,who is based in Berlin but centers much of his practice in Africa, has been—until now—far lesser known, with buildings that include primary schools and a healthcare clinic. When he was twenty,in 1985,Kéré earned a scholarship to study carpentry in Berlin. But he also attended night school and was admitted to Technische Universität Berlin, from which he graduated in 2004 with an advanced degree in architecture. He was still a student when he designed and built the innovative Gando Primary School.Kéré’s architectural practice was inspired by his own experience attending school with around 100 other children in a region with temperatures over 100 F.“It’s very hot inside. And there was no light, while outside, the sunlight was abundant.I think, one day I should make it better.I was thinking about space, about room, about how I could feel better.”In his designs for Gando Primary School and Naaba Belem Goumma Secondary School,Kéré drew on traditional building materials such as local clay mixed with concrete, and emphasized shade and shadows, making spaces bright enough and letting air in,and thus reducing the need for air conditioning. He wanted the buildings to evoke the sense of an oasis(绿洲),a place for many children,to be happy and learn how to read and write.A.Because it is the most famous prize.B.Because the winner only designs schools.C.Because Kéré wasn’t first selected as a candidate.D.Because another petitor was more famous.答案 D解析细节理解题。

Unit 2 The Olympic Games李仕才***阅读理解“It's a big hammer to crack a nut." This is how one angry parent described the recent crackdown(严厉的打击) by London police on parents who drop their kids off at school by car。

Yes,you read that correctly-the very mode of transportation that many American schools insist is the only safe way to deliver kids to school is now considered illegal in the UK.The decision to fine any vehicles seen dropping off or picking up kids within a particular zone of east London comes from city councilors’(议员) long.term efforts to make the area safer and less crowded. They say they’ve been trying for years “to e ncourage reasonable parking”,but in vain。

AWhenever we see a button, we want to press it because we know that something will happen. This is true in most cases, for example, on a doorbell. But some buttons are actually fake(假的), like the “close” button on a lift. Many people are in the habit of pressing the “close” button because they don’t have the patience to wait. But l ifts’ “close” buttons are a complete trick, at least in the U.S.—the doors will not close any faster no matter how hard you press. It started in the 1990s when the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in the U.S., making sure that all lifts stayed open long enough so that people with disabilities could enter safely.Only repair workers can use the buttons to speed up the door closing process if they have special keys. But to normal lift riders, the buttons aren’t completely useless.According to psychologists, fake buttons can actually make you feel better by offering you a sense of control.“A sense of control is very important. It reduces stress and increases wellbeing,”said Ellen J.Langer, a psychology professor at Harvard University.Experts also added that a lot of buttons that don’t do anything exist in our lives for this same purpose. For example, pedestrian crosswalk buttons don’t live up to their nameseither.Pressing them used to help make the traffic signals change faster, but that was before computercontrolled traffic signals were introduced. But psychologists found it interesting that even when people are aware of these little “white lies”, they still continue to push fake buttons because as long as the doors eventually close, it is considered to be worth the effort.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了我们平时生活中所见到的按钮可能是不起作用的。

A“BANG!” the door caused a reverberation (回声). It was just standing there, with father standing on one side, and me on the other side.We were both in great anger. “Never set foot in this house again!” stormed father. With tears welling up in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street. The street lights were shining, causing rather sad feelings. I wandered aimlessly.A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree. But now … I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because dad is getting old. We differ in our ways of thinking. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.I wandered the streets, without a destination in mind. My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on, there were fewer and fewer people on the streets, until I had only the street lights to keep me company. When I finally reached the high-rise apartment block in which I lived, I saw that the light was still on.I thought to myself: “Is father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?”In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. All the lights were off except father’s.Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any pity or any moments of regret. This was how he always was. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature. The light was still on. “Am I wrong?” I whispered, maybe… With the key in my hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. Assoon as I opened the door, tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist at all. Love----it’s second to none.1.Which is the correct order of the following events according to the passage?a. I opened the door and entered the house.b. I ran out into the street angrily.c. I reached the place where I lived and saw my house still brightly lit.d. I recalled my happy childhood.e. I began to walk about in the street without any aim.A. e, b, d, c, aB. b, e, d, c, aC. b, e, c, d, aD. e, b, c, a, d2.According to the author, why did his father often shout at him?A. Perhaps the father was getting older and older.B. Perhaps the son had already grown up.C. Perhaps they never agreed with each other.D. Perhaps the father had been used to doing that.3.What did the author mean by the underlined sentence “My heart was frozen on this hot summer night”?A. He felt lonely because there were so few people on the street.B. He felt uncomfortable because it was a very hot night.C. He didn’t know where to go at all.D. He had a bad cold on such a hot day.4.What was the author’s attitude towards his father at t he end of the story?A. He loved his father.B. He was worried about his father.C. He was afraid of his father.D. He was dissatisfied with his father.【文章大意】因思维不同和观点迥异,父子俩仿佛是来自两个不同世界的人,两个人心里隔着一道铁门。

BMy daughter Kelly is a cautious person. She needs to warm up situations, and is hesitant to try new things. When with close friends, she becomes a leader who laughs loudly and chants. “Girls rule, boys drool.” But when that comfort zone is not aroundher, she is shy and nervous. This has been challenging for me at times. “Shy” is not a word that I think has ev er been used to describe me. But this has been year of firsts for my girl that has filled her with a new sense of confidence. This year she moved to lap lane in swimming where she was preparing for a swim team. This year she learned to ride a bike without training wheels. And this year she completed her first kids’ triathlon(三项全能).On Saturday, with a thunderstorm coming soon and my son’s birthday party later in the day, we all went out in the dark of the morning for Kelly to participate in her first triathlon. We practiced transitions from swim to bike to run with her, we got all the equipment she’d need, and we kept talking about the race. But as we waited the two hours for the older kids to finish before her turn, she held my leg a little harder and told me she loved me a few too many times. She was nervous but trying to keep it together. And then it was her turn. From the second she jumped into the water, my heart soared. My daughter transformed into the most confident human being I had ever seen. She dominated that swim, crushed that bike ride and ran to the finish with the biggest smile on her face.I can honestly say that I never felt so proud of someone in my entire life. It wasn’t because she did a sport or anything like that. It was because she was a fraid of something and conquered that fear with confidence and a fire I hadn’t seen before. All day I would find myself just looking over at her and smiling. She might be wearing the finalist medal but I felt like I won that day. I won the chance to see my girl shine.Shine on, sweet baby.1.Kelly is nervous when ________.A. boys are around herB. she changes into a leaderC. she is away from her momD. situations are new to her2.We can learn from Paragraph 3 that______.A. the race began in the early morningB.
