II阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D 项中,选出最佳选项。

A
When was the last time someone did something unexpectedly nice for you? Not someone you knew, but a total stranger? It’s happened to me a few times, but two instances really stand out.
A few years ago, I was dining out with a person who kept going on and on about himself, completely unaware of the fact that I was sitting there in misery(痛苦). It wasn’t his company that disappointed me. I was recovering from a bad grade in my study. I could have collapsed(崩溃) in tears right there at the table.
When we picked up the check, the waitress said, “Your meal was already paid for.” My friend and I didn’t have a clue how it happened. Then I remembered a man coming in out of the corner of my eye. He was dressed in mostly white, sat down at the bar, had a glass of wine, stayed for maybe ten minutes, and then left. The waitress said, “Yes, the gentleman who was in here a while ago paid for you.”
Just last year, I was running a half-marathon. With just 0.1 miles to go, I was out of gas. Runners call it “hitting the wall”; I thought I couldn’t move another muscle. Out of nowhere, a teenager jogs up next to me and says, “What’s your name, sweetie? Jennifer? Okay, Jennifer, let’s go! Come on! It is just around the corner! You can do it!” And he ran with me until I picked up my pace. I found him at the finish line to thank him for the encouragement only to learn he wasn’t even supposed to be in the race that day. He was running in place of someone else.

One of the simplest and the most effective forms of communication involves nothing more than the movement of facial muscles. What am I talking about? Smiling! Everyone understands what a smile means, and everyone also understands what a frown means. In fact, these two basic facial expressions can be recognized across countries, across the world and across the globe, regardless of the language spoken or culture lived in.
Hugs are so beautiful! When you give someone a hug or someone comes up and gives you a hug, this simple act of a hug can “speak” volumes about how much you care for the other person, how much love you want to share with the other person, how much you have missed the other person. This hug has so much to say, and yet there never has to be any words spoken.
And, who needs to say the words “yes”or “no”when a movement of the head says the same thing. These basic examples show just how powerful body language can be. Just knowing how to read and use body language effectively, makes it really easy to see why it is not always a bad thing to be lost for words.
Body language in the world of love is a very common thing and sometimes the only thing. And, most of the time, body language is the very first words “spoken” before any words are. The old saying is “love at first sight”, not “love at first word”. Across a crowded room, their eyes meet and linger, he winks at her, and she raises an eyebrow. The connection is made without any words needed. These displays of body language say it all. In fact, sometimes they can say more than words can.
31. How many kinds of body language are mentioned in the first two paragraphs?
A. Two
B. Three
C. Four
D. Five
32. The author thinks it isn’t a bad thing to be lost for words because __________.

B. between two good friends
C. between family members
D. between close relatives
34. Which word can best describe body language according to the passage?
A. Negative
B. Important
C. Wonderful
D. Powerful
35. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. Many words are contained in a hug.
B. Smiling means the same thing all over the world.
C. Words are not necessary in the world of romance.
D. “Yes” or “no” are usually replaced by body language.
C
How many times have you gotten upset because someone wasn’t doing his job, or because your child isn’t behaving? How many times have you been irritated(恼怒的) when you’ve planned something carefully and things didn’t go as you’d hoped?
This kind of anger and irritation happens to us all of us---it’s part of the human experiences.
One thing that irritated me is when people talk during a movie, or cut me off in traffic. Actually, I have a lot of these little annoyances---don’t we all? And it isn’t always easy to find peace when you’ve become upset or irritated.
Let me tell you a little secret to finding peace of mind: see the glass as already broken.
See, the cause of our stress, anger and irritation is that things don’t go the way we like, the way we expect them to. Think of how many times this has been true for you. And so the solution is simple: expect things to go wrong, expect things to be different than we hoped or planned, expect the unexpected to happen. And accept it.
Take one quick example. On our recent trip to Japan, I told my kids to expect things to go wrong---they always do on a trip. I told them, “See it as part of the adventure.”
And this worked like a charm. When we inevitably(不可避免地) took the wrong train on a foreign-language subway system, or when it rained on the day we went to Disney Sea, or when we took three trains and walked 10 blocks only to find the National Children’s Castle closed on Mondays… They said, “It’s part of the adventure!” and it was all OK---we didn’t get too bothered.
So when the nice glass you bought inevitably falls and breaks some day, you might get upset. But things will be different, if you see the glass as already broken, from the day you get it. And when it breaks, you won’t be upset or sad---because it was already broken, from the day you got it. And you’ll realize that every moment you have with it is precious.
36. The author would probably agree that ________.
A. we should control our anger and irritation
B. we must get well prepared for the future
C. anger and irritation is a natural part of our life
D. optimism can help us overcome our anger and irritation
37. What does the author mean by saying “seeing the glass as already broken” in Paragraph 4?
A. Getting ready for worst result of things.
B. Enjoying the process of doing things.
C. Expecting little from life.
D. Finding the relationship between cause and effect.
38. Why could the author’s children enjoy their whole trip to Japan?
A. Everything went smoothly.
B. They had a lot of adventures.
C. They had expected things to go wrong.
D. They could soon get used to the customs there.
39. We can learn from the passage that the author _________.
A. often gets angry in his life
B. can adjust his state of mind accordingly
C. always expects others to act in his way
D. always suffers from his anger and irritation
40. The purpose of the passage is to _________.
A. tell us some experience in life
B. advise us how to find peace of mind
C. ask us to see things from both sides
D. tell us a happy trip with children
D
Exam results do not matter to future employers as much as candidates(应试者) who are “job-ready” and have a broad range of life, work and social skills, business groups say.
While parents and students alike worry about school grades and exam results, employers are looking for something that sets a potential employee apart from the average job seeker.
Business Council of Australia spokesman Scott Thompson said that while education was important, it was the skills learned through extracurricular(课外的) activities that really mattered to an employer.
“Employers are increasingly focused on graduates who are job-ready,” Mr. Thompson said. “They are looking at the sorts of, what we call, ‘employability skills’ that graduates bring. Part of that comes from quality education, but those who have vocational experience that can be useful got the jobs they’re looking for, they are going to be considered very favorably.”
Mr. Thompson said young people ---whether they are in high school or university--- need to get extra skills on their resumes (个人简历) if they want an advantage over their peers (同龄人).
“As a general principle, graduates and young people who are looking to enter the workforce should think about the sorts of employability skills they’re going to need to meet the requirements of jobs they’ll be looking at in the years ahead,” he said. “So if they can bring those skills set to the table, they should be well positioned to succeed in the job market.”
Business SA chief executive Peter Vaughan agreed, saying that while the importance of education should not be downplayed, experience was often the deal maker in the employment process.
“Education is a major factor in all kinds of employment, and we cannot underestimate (低估) its importance, but having experience in the workforce provides invaluable assistance and guidance to students and allows employers to recruit(雇用) school leavers with skills relevant to the workplace,” he said.
41. What sets a potential employee apart from the average job seeker?
A. High examination scores.
B. A wide range of knowledge.
C. Practical work and life skills.
D. Good educational background.
42. According to Scott Thompson, __________.
A. students should focus on their school lessons
B. students should choose to work before graduation.
C. students benefit more from extracurricular activities
D. employability skills cannot be gained through education
43. The underlined word “downplayed”in Paragraph 7 can be replaced by __________.
A. valued
B. refused
C. stressed
D. ignored
44. What can we learn from the passage?
A. “Job-ready” students usually get good grades at school.
B. Employability makes you more competitive in job market.
C. Employers pay more attention to academic qualifications.
D. High school students needn’t get extra work and life skills.
45. What is this passage mainly about?
A. Life skills are more important than exam results.
B. Exam results are more important than life skills.
C. Education isn’t that important.
D. Finding a job is very difficult.

读写任务
From the passage, we know that a boy was shamed of a scar on his mother’s face. Finally, he discovered that his mother got the scar because she tried to save him in a fire when he was a baby.
It is a touching story which reminds me of a similar story that happened during the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008. a young mother and her baby were covered by ruins after the earthquake. The mother used her body to make space for her baby so that the baby could live. When they were found, the mother was already dead while the baby was still alive because of the room made by the mother. People found a message on the mother’s cellphone, which was conveying her love of her baby.
Nothing can be compared with a mother’s love. A mother’s love is like a circle, which has no beginning and no ending. Everyone should respect their mother and treat her very well no matter how old she is and how sick she may become.。
