In China, we use chopsticks to eat most of our food. Using chopsticks takes a lot of practice when you're little. I remember struggling with them as a kid! In the West though, people mainly use forks, knives and spoons. I find that eating rice or noodles with a fork can be quite messy and difficult. Burgers, sandwiches and foods you eat with your hands are also much more common in Western cuisine compared to China.Speaking of eating with our hands, in China it is considered rude to pick up food with your fingers and eat it directly unless it's something like fruit. Even fried chicken has to be eaten with chopsticks! But I've seen my friends from America happily munching on pizza, burgers, fries and all sorts of finger foods. That's just not something we do in China.The eating experience is quite different too. In China, we like to share dishes from the middle of the table. So if we order four or five different dishes, everyone can take a little bit from eachone. But from what I understand, in Western-style eating each person gets their own complete meal on their plate in front of them. You don't really share and take from other people's plates.Soup is another area where habits differ. In China, we usually have soup as a separate course towards the end of the meal to help digest everything. But I've seen Western friends just drinking soup as a starter before the main part of the meal. That seems so backwards to me!Let's not forget about beverages either. In China, we overwhelmingly prefer hot drinks like tea, warm soy milk or even just hot water. Restaurants never automatically give you a cold drink with your meal. But in Western countries, it seems like you always get a glass of cold water, soda or iced tea along with your food. My Western friends are used to drinking ice-cold drinks with everything!Finally, the rituals around eating are quite different too. In China, before eating any meal we say "qǐngjǐngchīfàn" which reminds us to enjoy our food. After eating, it's polite to say"fànle" meaning "I've had my meal" to show appreciation for the food. But I don't really see any similar rituals around mealtimes in Western cultures.Well, those are some of the biggest differences I've noticed between Chinese and Western eating habits! Of course, there are variations everywhere, and things are slowly blending together more nowadays. But isn't it fascinating to see the wide range of ways in which people from different cultures eat and think about food? They also use a widervariety of cheeses beyond just basic cheeses like cheddar or mozzarella that you find in Chinese cooking.When it comes to cooking methods, stir-frying is huge in China. You'll find sandwiches, fries, baked potatoes, spaghetti, and otherwheat-based foods playing a bigger role.Another big contrast is how meals are structured and eaten. In China, meals tend to be more communal with lots of shared dishes in the center of the table that everyone takes portions from. It's considered polite to try everything. Meals are usually eaten with chopsticks rather than forks and knives. But in Western-style meals, each person often gets an individual plateddish in front of them with just one or two different food items. Using forks, knives and spoons is the norm. And the food diet of southerners is based on the plant, the residents have the habit of drinking soup and eat porridge, no matter if the food has been put on, they must be the first to eat soup, drink soup before eating a bit, after fond, they also have another bowl of soup to drink, this to be considered as eating a meal. And the study of Chinese and Western food culture is an important part of it, so this thesis will analyze the different food cultures in Chinese and western countries. And I will compare them from the aspect of main food, drink, tableware, the position of dishes and its reason, and healthy conception.The first difference between Chinese and western food culture is about different main food.Rice and cooked wheaten food are two main staple foods in the Han nationality. The southern and northern regions cultivate rice, and rice has become the main nourishment in these areas. The northeast and northwest regions cultivate wheat and give first place to cooked wheaten food. Also, other kinds of cereals like maize, Kaoliang, grain, tuber crop have become staple food, in different areas as well as coarse cereals. The Han nationality’s staple foods have colorful and various cooking methods and has hundreds of kinds of rice and wheat products. Nowadays, the northeast regions in China still give first place to cooked wheaten food.Meat, milk and bread are the staple food in western countries. In spring and autumn, people drink tea, which was made of various flowers to make them more beautiful and active. In summer, green tea is the best choice. It is a special kind of healthy drink and has many unique functions, such as refreshing oneself, removing strain, preventing heatstroke, cooling, caring for eyes etc. Most people choose black tea in winter because it is fermenting and not belonging to cold. It can not only foster your stomach, promote digestion and your appetite but also help to strengthen the cardiac muscles.Chinese people always drink beer in hot summer and liquor in winter. Liquor has thousands of year’s history in China and it creates a unique style in the world. It is fragrantly pure and has flavors. Drinking a small cup of liquor everyday could promote digestion, whet appetite and keeps one warm.While the grape wine and beer are common drink in western countries. People in some cold area even drink sherry everyday to keep themselves warm. In Britain, bars meet your eyes everywhere on the streets and become second living rooms. The British are experts in drinking and beer is their favorite drink. Normally, there are three kinds of beer which are divided by flavor: Bitter, Lager and Cider. In recent years, it has come into vogue to drink wine and the wine consumption in Britain is the greatest in the world. Simultaneously, juice is also a very popular drink in western countries. Usually people drink juice at breakfast. Juice gets unique welcome in Britain, the annual average consumption amounts to 19.1 liters in Britain.Then it comes to the different tableware in Chinese and western food culture.In China it is usually thought that people are an inherent part of nature. With the industrialization and globalization of the world,especially the entering of the WTO,China has opened a market,which has boosted the investment of western enterprises in China;and western food is one of these investments.Obviously,western manufacturers benefit a lot from the Chinese market,such as KFC and Macdonald’s,which appealed to thousands of customers every day. Seemingly the new generation prefer to the western restaurant rather than the Chinese one. Why did the phenomenon happen? My opinions are as followed.
First and foremost,our new generation’s pace of life is quickly,while the western restaurants do really meet our needs. Compared with the handmade meals in China,western restaurants usually use machine to make food,which is much faster and save the long-waiting time. In addition,Chinese restaurants paying much attention to make food both good-looking and tasty also contributes to the long waiting time contrast with western restaurants attaching much importance to the speed.
Secondly,the environment of the western restaurants also plays an important role in attracting customers.The western restaurants are usually national chains restaurants,which have the unified standards including the servers’ clothes,food price, decorations,music and so on. The elegant environment convinces us that the food in western restaurants is more safe contrast to that in the dirty,disordered and noisy Chinese restaurants. Besides,western restaurants offer us Internet,so we can eat and play at the same time. How romantic and graceful the western restaurants are!
Last but not least, the vanity of our new generation also lead to the boost of the western restaurants. Living in a nuclear family and under the spoil of the family,our new generation are easily motivated by pride and vanity. We like to compare our property and even flaunt to others. In order to show how wealth we are,we would like to go to the western restaurants to consume as the price in western restaurants is much higher than that in Chinese ones.
All in all,many aspects can affect our choice on Chinese restaurants or western restaurants. Except for time,environment and the vanity of our young people, being crazy about foreign things,eating habits etc. can also influence our actions,so it is difficult to say which one should we choose. What we should do is to follow our heart and to eat what we like.。
