"My aunt will come down soon, Mr. Nuttel," said a young lady of fifteen.Framton Nuttel attempted to say something to please the niece. Privately he doubted whether this visit would do much towards helping with his nerve problem."I know how it will be," his sister had said, "People there are nice. I shall just give you letters of introduction to all the people I know there." Framton wondered whether Mrs. Sappleton, the lady to whom he was presenting one of the letters of introduction came into the nice division."Do you know many of the people round here?" asked the niece."Hardly a soul," said Framton."Then you know practically nothing about my aunt. Her great tragedy(悲剧) happened just three years ago," said the child, “Out through that window, her husband and her two young brothers went off for their day's shooting. They never came back. Poor aunt always thinks that they will come back someday. She has often told me about Ronnie, her youngest brother, singing ‘Bertie, why do you bound?"'At this time, Mrs. Sappleton came in, greeting, “I hope you don't mind the open window." She talked on cheerfully about the shooting. To Framton it was all purely horrible. He made a desperate but only partially successful effort to turn the talk on to a less scary topic. "The doctors agree in ordering me complete rest, and anabsence of mental excitement." he announced, "On the matter of diet they are not so much in agreement," he continued."No?" said Mrs. Sappleton, in a voice which only replaced a yawn at the last moment. "Here they are at last!" she suddenly cried. In the deepening dusk out came three figures with a tired brown spaniel(猎犬). And then a young voice rang out of the dusk, "I said, Bertie, why do you bound?"Framton grabbed wildly at his stick and hat, without a word of goodbye, and rushed out of sight.“What is up?" Mrs. Sappleton was confused."I expect it was the spaniel," said the niece calmly, "He told me that he was once hunted into a tomb by a pack of dogs, and had to spend the night in a newly dug tomb with the creatures barking just above him. Enough to make anyone lose their nerve." Romance at short notice was her specialty.1. According to the passage, we learn that Mrs. Sappleton .A. felt sorrow about the shootingB. got along well with RonnieC. listened carefully to FramtonD. trusted and spoiled her niece2. As for Framton's nerve problem, his doctors .A. recommended him to go off for a shootingB. suggested to him a rest cure in the countrysideC. advised him to keep his mind off excitementD. agreed on the treatment of his diet3. Which word can best describe Framton?A. Cheerful.B. Brave.C. Fragile.D. Wise.4. What can be inferred about the niece from the last sentence?A. She was good at making up a story in a short time.B. She showed a strong love for scary stories.C. She fell in love with Framton in no time.D. She took no notice of strange visitors.【参考答案】1—4、BCCA【广东省2012届高三考前冲刺卷(三)】CTechnology has been an encouragement of historical change. It acted as such a force in England beginning in the eighteenth century, and across the entire Western World in the nineteenth.Rapid advances were made in the use of scientific findings in the manufacture(制造) of goods, which has changed ideas about work. One of the first changes was that other forms of energy have taken the place of human power.Along with this came the increased use of machines to manufacture products in less time.People also developed machines that could produce the same parts for a product:each nail was exactly like every other nail, meaning that each nail could be changed for every other nail. This means that goods could be mass production, although mass production required breaking production down into smaller and smaller tasks.Once this was done, workers no longer started on the product and laboured to complete it.Instead, they might work only one thousandth of it,other workers completing their own parts in certain order. There is nothing strange about this manufacturing work by today’s standards.Highly skilled workers were unable to compare with the new production techniques,as mass production allowed goods of high standard to be produced in greater number than could ever be done by hand. But the skilled worker wasn’t the only loser, the common workers lost too.Similar changes forced farmers away. The increased mechanization(机械化) of agriculture freed masses of workers from ploughing the land and harvesting its crops. They had little choice but to stream toward the rapidly developing industrial centers.Increasingly, standards were set by machines.Workers no longer owned their own tools, their skill was no longer valued, and pride in their work was no longer possible.Workers fed, looked after and repaired the machines that could work faster than humans at greatly reduced cost.36.In this passage, which of the following is NOT considered as a change caused by the use of scientific findings in the production of goods?A.Other forms of energy have taken the place of human power.B.The increased exploitation of workers in the 19th century.C.The increased use of machines to make products in less time.D.The use of machines producing parts of the same standard.37.The underlined word “this” i n the first paragraph refers to________.A.the use of scientific findingsB.the practice of producing the same parts for a productC.the human power being replaced by other forms of energyD.the technology becoming the encouragement of historical change38.The underlined word “this” in the second paragraph refers to the change that________.A.each nail could be taken the place of by every other nailB.each nail was exactly like every other nailC.producing tasks became smaller and smallerD.goods could be mass produced39.According to the writer, highly skilled workers________.A.completely disappeared with the coming of the factory systemB.were dismissed by the bossC.were unable to produce goods of high standardD.were unable to produce fine goods at that same speed as machines 40.According to the passage, what did the farmers have to do with the coming of mechanization of agriculture?A.Many of them had to leave their farmland for industrial centers.B.They stuck to their farm work.C.They refused to use machines.D.They did their best to learn how to use the machines.36.B [原文中并未说对工人剥削的增加,故选项B为正确答案。

You’re in a department store and you see a couple of attractive young women looking at a sweater. You listen to their conversation:“I can’t believe it—a Lorenzo Bertolla! They are almost impossible to fi nd. Isn’t it beautiful? And it’s a lot cheaper than the one Sara bought in Rome.”They leave and you go over to see this incredible sweater. It’s nice and the price is right. You’ve never heard of Lorenzo Bertolla, but those girls looked really stylish. They must know. So, you buy it. You never realize that those young women are employees of an advertising agency. They are actually paid to go from store to store, talking loudly about Lorenzo Bertolla clothes.Every day we notice what people are wearing, driving and eating. If the person looks cool, the product seems cool, too. This is the secret of undercover marketing. Companies from Ford to Nike are starting to use it.Undercover marketing is important because it reaches people that don’t pay attention to traditional advertising. This is particularly true of the MTV generation—consumers between the age of 18 and 34. It is a golden group. They have a lot of money to spend, but they don’t trust ads.So advertising agencies hire young actors to “perform”in bars and other places where young adults go. Some people might call this practice deceptive (骗人的), but marketing executive Jonathan Ressler calls it creative. “Look at traditional advertising. Its effectiveness is decreasing.”However, one might ask what e xactly is “real” about of young women pretending to be enthusiastic about a sweater? Advertising executives would say it’s no less real than an ad. The difference is that you know an ad is trying to persuade you to buy something. You don’t know when a conv ersation you overhear is just a performance.1. The two attractive young women were talking so that they could______.A. get the sweater at a lower priceB. be heard by people aroundC. be admired by other shoppersD. decide on buying the sweater2. Lorenzo Bertolla is______.A. a very popular male singerB. an advertising agencyC. a clothing company in RomeD. the brand name of a sweater3. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?A. Traditional advertising is becoming less effective because it’s too direct.D. Undercover marketing will surely be banned soon by the government.4. We once had a poster competition in our fifth grade art class.“You could win prizes, “ our teacher told us as she wrote the poster information on the blackboard. She passed out sheets of construction paper while continuing, “The first prize is ten dollars. You just have to make sure that the words on the blackboard a ppear somewhere on your poster. “We studied the board critically. Some of us looked with one eye and held up certain colors against the blackboard, rocking the sheets to the right or left while weconjured up our designs. Others twisted their hair around their fingers or chewed their erasers while deep in thought. We had plans for that ten-dollar grand prize, each and every one of us. I’m going to spend mine on candies, one hopeful would announce, while another practiced looking serious, wise and rich.Everyone in the class made a poster. Some of us used parts of those fancy paper napkins, while others used nothing but colored construction paper. Some of us used big designs, and some of us preferred to gather our art tidily down in one corner of our poster and let the space draw the viewer’s attention to it. Some of us would wander past the good students’ desks and then return to our own projects with a growing sense of hopelessness. It was yet another grown-up trick of the sort they seemed especially fond of, making all of us believe we had a fair chance, and then always—always—rewarding the same old winners.I believe I drew a sailboat, but I can’t say that with any certainty. I made it.I admired it. I determined it to be the very best of all of the posters I had seen, and then I turned it in.Minutes passed. No one came along to give me the grand prize, and then someone distracted me, and I probably never would have thought about that poster again.I was still sitting at my desk, thinking, What poster? when the teacher gave me an envelope with a ten-dollar bill in it and everyone in the class applauded for me.1. C.The European Renaissance as a cultural development that included changes in musical style.D.The ancient Greek and Roman musical practices used during the European Renaissance. 37.The underlined word “now” in Paragrap h 1 refers to ________.A.1855B.the period of the RenaissanceC.tile time of the classical civilizations of Greece and RomeD.the time at which the author wrote the passage38.It can be inferred from the passage that thinkers of the Renaissance were seeking a rebirth of ________.A.spirituality in everyday lifeB.communication among artists across EuropeC.a cultural emphasis on human valuesD.religious themes in art that would accompany the traditional secular themes 39.What can be inferred about the music of ancient Greece and Rome?A.Its effect on listeners was described in a number of classical texts.B.It was played on instruments that are familiar to modern audiences.C.It expressed more different ideals than classical sculpture, painting and poetry. D.It had the same effect on Renaissance audiences as it had when originally performed. 40.According to the passage, why was Bernardino Cirillo disappointed with the music of his time?A.It did not contain enough religious themes.B.It had little emotional impact on audiences.C.It was not complex enough to appeal to musicians.D.It was too dependent on the art and literature of his time.36.C [主旨大意题。

Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis was one of the most private women in the world, yet when she went to work as an editor in the last two decades of her life, she revealed(展现) herself as she did nowhere else. After the death of her second husband, Greek shipping magnate(巨头) Aristotle Onassis, Jacqueline’s close friend and former White House social secretary Letitia Baldrige made a suggestion that she consider a career(职业) in publishing. After consideration, Jacqueline accepted it. Perhaps she hoped to find there some ideas about how to live her own life. She became not less but more interested in reading. For the last 20 years of her life, Jacqueline worked as a publisher’s editor, first at Viking, then at Doubleday, pursuing(追求) a late-life career longer than her two marriages combined. During her time in publishing, she was responsible for managing and editing more than 100 successfully marketed books. Among the first books were In the Russian Style and Inventive Paris Clothes. She also succeeded in persuading TV hosts Bill Moyers and Joseph Campbell to transform their popular television conversations into a book, The Power of Myth. The book went on to become an international best-seller. She dealt, too, with Michael Jackson as he prepared his autobiography(自传), Moonwalk. Jacqueline may have been hired for her name and for her social relations, but she soon proved her worth. Her choices, suggestions and widespread social relations were of benefit both to the publishing firms and to Jacqueline herself. In the books she selected for publication, she built on a lifetime of spending time by herself as a reader and left a record of the growth of her mind. Her books are the autobiography she never wrote. Her role as First Lady, in the end, was overshadowed by her performance as an editor. However, few knew that she had achieved so much.1. We can learn from the passage that Jacqueline .A. became fond of reading after working as an editorB. was in charge of publishing 100 booksC. promoted her books through social relationsD. gained a lot from her career as an editor2. Jacqueli ne’s life as First Lady was more colorful than as an editorC. Jacqueline was more successful as an editor than as First LadyD. Jacqueline’s role as First Lady was more brilliant than as an editor3. What can be inferred from the passage?A. Jacqueline’s two marriages lasted more than 20 years.B. Jacqueline’s own publishing firm was set up eventually.C. Jacqueline’s views and beliefs were reflected in the books she edited.D. Jacqueline’s achievements were widely known.4. The passage is mainly .A. an introduction of Jacqueline’s life both as First Lady and as an editorB. a brief description of Jacqueline’s lifelong experiencesC. a brief account of Jacqueline’s career as an editor in her last 20 yearsD. an analysis of Jacqueline’s social relat ions in publishing【参考答案】1--4 、DCCC【2014高考英语广东省梅州市质检试卷】CThe ancient Egyptians appeared to be among the first early civilizations to learn how to grow roses. In 1888, at Hawara in the El Faiyum area of Egypt, two-thousand-year-old roses were found in ancient tombs. The discovery suggested roses were an important part of the complex burial ceremony which took place whenan important person died. The roses found in the tombs are thought by modern experts to be the oldest preserved flowers ever found in the world. They must have been cut and dried before flowering so that they would remain undamaged. Over the centuries, the roses had shrunk and became tight balls, but on careful examination it was discovered that the petals (花瓣) themselves were hardly damaged.Egypt’s skill in mass-cultivation(大面积栽培)of roses in early times led to the flowers becoming an important export product. At the height of the Roman Empire, Egypt exported large quantities of roses to the Roman courts. Wealthy Romans loved the beautiful colors and sweet smells of roses. So the Romans attempted to grow their own roses and they eventually mastered the art of mass cultivation. Egypt then decided to concentrate on growing grain instead of roses, so grain soon took over as the number-one agricultural product of Egypt.Roses were appreciated in other early civilizations too, including Greece and Persia. They are a decorative feature on coins, sculpture, and vases dating back thousands of years. There is also evidence that roses were highly valued by the Chinese who believed that the flowers could be used to help treat a wide range of illnesses, from toothache to skin and chest diseases. In the modern world, the rose has not lost its popularity as the “Queen of Flowers” — the name given to it by the Greek poetess Sappho. Even today more roses are sold than any other flower. Modern techniques have enabled people to create ever more beautiful roses. Transportation by air makes it possible to grow roses in countries with favorable climates and sell them within twenty-four hours in profitable markets all over the world. Tons of roses are transported this way every week. Roses from Ecuador, a country in northern South America, can be bought in Holland, even though that country itself has a huge rose-growing business.36. The roses discovered at Hawara in 1888 were ______.A. buried about four thousand years agoB. cut after they floweredC. used to keep the dead body freshD. finely preserved37. Grain replaced roses to become the number-one agricultural product of Egypt because _____.A. the Egyptians showed less interest in rosesB. the competition in rose export became fierceC. the Romans could grow roses for themselvesD. grain was in great demand in the world market38. Paragraph 3 is developed mainly _____.A. by cause and effectB. by order in spaceC. by order in timeD. by examples39. With the example of roses from Ecuador, the author shows ______.A. modern techniques help the cultivation of rosesB. air transport helps the rose trade worldwideC. roses grown in Ecuador are world-famousD. roses are sold more than any other flower40. What would be the best title for the passage?A. Queen of flowersB. History of growing rosesC. Big archeological discoveryD. Rose trade around the world【参考答案】36-40 D CDBA本文是说明文。

People today are becoming increasingly aware that a proper diet is the foundation of good health. If we don’t have a regular diet of proper food, we don’t have the fuel to perform at our best. However, some people think not eating breakfast doesn’t matter a lot, though eating it is important. Get the truth behind this common misconception and other meal frequency and timing meals. Will eating breakfast every day help me lose weight?Yes, eating the morning meal can actually help you shed pounds. People who have breakfast are less likely to eat diet-busting(破坏的) junk food and are more likely to exercise later in the day, as studies show. People who skip breakfast, on the other hand, usually make up the calories — and then some — before day's end. Researchers found that 78 percent of the men and women included in the National Weight Control Registry — who have maintained an average weight lossof 66 pounds for more than 5 years — eat breakfast every day.Is "grazing" really healthier than eating three square meals a day?No. Eating many small meals throughout the day is probably not better for you than three main meals, the traditional amounts of food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The idea that "grazing" is healthier comes from a few old studies showing that eating frequent meals throughout the day may burn more fat and lower insulin (胰岛素)levels. But later studies have found no benefit to grazing. It's not healthier than eating three squares, according to the American Dietetic Association.I've always eaten most of my calories at dinner. If I'm healthy, is there any reason for us not to keep doing this?Hard to say. Instinctively, it sounds like a bad idea. Yet "one-mealers" tend to eat less food totally, scientists say, so your dining habit may actually help you stay tidy and attractive. On the other hand, one small, brief study by USDA scientists found that eating just one daily meal may cause small increases in blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol(胆固醇). If your annual blood tests show a rise in any key risk factors for heart disease or diabetes, it is high time for you to reconsider your meal strategy. Will bedtime snacks make you fat?No. But that's not permission for you to eat cookies before going to bed every night. Consuming more calories than you burn through physical activity produces big loose stomachs and weak legs no matter what time you overeat. A habit of snacking in front of the television every evening will lead to weight gain, but no more so than having a six-egg pancake for breakfast or conquering a bag of beans with sweet food at your desk every afternoon. The final wordEat fewer calories than you need in a day and you will lose weight. Eat breakfast because it will help you control calories better, not because it's a magic meal. Eat the number of meals that keeps you satisfied and energized. No one plan is best for everyone.Title: Stop Obsessing Over Your Meals1. without2. Aspects3. less4. daytime5.show/indicate6. hard/difficult7.increasing8. physical9. Speed reading is a technique by which an individual can not only read fast but also retain(保留)the information given in the reading material. The primary reason for a low reading speed is that we can’t judge what to read and what part to skip. 36 .Skim through the material. 37 . Then, it will become easier to understand the material. If you’re reading a textbook, then it’s a good idea to read the summary, introduction or preface before reading the main text. It will give you a guide about what you need to learn from the text. Your eyes can take in several words at a time and this is known as eye span. To increase your reading speed, try reading blocks of words in a sentence. 38 . Even if you skip over them you’ll still understand the main idea o f the sentence you’re reading.39 . The most common mistake made by poor readers is often pausing in the middle of their reading to go back and dwell on some previous sentences. One way to avoid this is to use a piece of paper to place it over the text you’re reading, covering each line once you’ve finished reading it.Avoid reading it out loud. Reading it out is a tendency that most people find hard to break. It reduces the reading speed to a considerable extent, since you are reading at a speed which is just around your speaking speed. Some people move their lips while reading while others like to “read in their head”. Both the methods contribute to a low reading speed. 40 .A. You can also skip over words such as: the, a, it, to, etc..B. Do not re-read too often.C. Read the topic sentence only.D. The best way to break this habit is to be conscious while reading and if you catch yourself moving your lips, just place a finger on your mouth.E. Ambition is a necessary quality in life. It is the force which drives us on to use whatever talent we have got. If we haven’t got some degree of ambition, these talents will not be used for our own and other’s benefit. We must continually want to bebetter than we are. Without ambition we are just jellyfish that flop through life. We only react to events; we don’t try to control them.Ambition, however, can have several defects.First of all it can be unrealistic. We may not be able to see the limits of our own abilities, so we do ambitious things that are completely beyond us. Our career masters can see our good qualities and our limitations objectively. They may tell us that we haven’t the ability to deal with people and would make good businessmen. We refuse to take their evaluation. We keep on trying. Many years and many disappointments later we are forced to accept their judgment. But what a waste of time our ill-founded ambition has caused us!Secondly, our ambition can be too concentrated. We devote our attention to one narrow aim, such as getting distinctions in our science subjects. Everything that may draw us away from this aim is cut out of our lives. In the end we get our distinctions. But what damage we have caused ourselves in the process! We are isolated beings who only care about a particular examination. And we probably won’t make good scientists. We lack the breadth of view necessary for success in higher studies.Thirdly, our ambition can be limited to lifeless objectives. We want to gain money, or power, or membership of some circles. Persons who feel inferior try to make up by seeking the respect of others through possessions of these artificial signs of worth.Fourthly, our ambition may be self-centered. Instead of directing some of our ambition towards community improvement we may exploit members of the community in the interests of self-advancements. In later life we may be ambitious for the success of our children but we regard this success as only a further mark of our own success.Ambition is necessary in the lives of individuals---necessary for their own improvement and for the improvement of the community in which they live. But, like all blind forces, it must be directed if it is not to cause disaster. It must be tightlycontrolled by the head and the heart. Otherwise ambition may demand too high a price in terms of human qualities.1.improve2. benefiting3. enable4. lacking5. greater6.reputation/fame7. selfish8.others’9.
